i still love them. i still love them. >> more on that coming up. but first, the senate runoff in georgia. final votes today. senator raphael warnock and the republican challenger herschel walker have been campaigning hard down to the wire. congressional correspondent rachel scott starts us off from a polling place in marietta. good morning, rachel. >> reporter: george, good morning. georgia voters will get the last word this midterm election cycle in one of the most highly-anticipated races. a win for democrats would give them more leverage, but republicans have one final opportunity to flip a senate seat. this morning, georgia voters heading to the polls one last time for the final senate battle this midterm election. >> before a big game i don't sleep because i'm ready. i want y'all to get ready. >> are you ready to win this election? [ cheers ] >> reporter: democratic incumbent senator raphael warnock and his republican challenger herschel walker crisscrossing the state with just hours to go, pleading with voters to turn out. >> that's what we're working on right now. we're working on turnout, turnout, turnout. >> reporter: more than

1.8 million cast their ballot shattering records. warnock won more votes in november but not enough to avoid a runoff, now heading into the election day feeling the momentum, urging his supporters to not let up. >> i need you to vote and tell everybody in your circle to vote like it is an emergency. >> reporter: walker with this closing message -- >> a vote for my opponent is a vote for joe biden. >> herschel walker is basically calling you a rubber stamp for president biden. what do you say to voters who might be worried about that? >> i am the 18th most bipartisan senator in the senate, period. now, i know that that's an inconvenient fact for mr. walker, but we also know that he's allergic to facts, even the facts about his own life. >> reporter: warnock insisting this all comes down to character, pointing to allegations that have plagued walker's campaign -- domestic abuse, lying about his resume or

the number of children he has and accusations that he paid for two women to have abortions which he denies. the two leaders of both parties, president biden and former president donald trump, have been notably absent in the final stretch. president biden has not campaigned here at all. herschel walker keeping his distance from trump, holding a telerally just hours before the polls opened. >> so many people have already voted in georgia, rachel. >> reporter: yeah, and democrats historically tend to vote early, so those record-breaking numbers that we were talking about could be a good sign for senator raphael warnock, but he knows that herschel walker is still very much in this race as republicans tend to turn out on election day and that is exactly what walker is betting on this morning. george? >> rachel scott on the scene, thanks very much. robin? and now to the latest on the sabotage at power stations that left a north carolina county in the dark. schools are closed once again this morning in moore county. an overnight curfew remains in effect. mona kosar abdi is in north carolina for us where the fbi has joined the investigation.

good morning, mona. >> reporter: robin, good morning. the lights are slowly coming back on here in moore county, but tens of thousands of households are still without power for a third straight day. the sheriff calling this eye opening as it underscores how vulnerable the nation's power grid is to vandals. the investigation into the gun attack on a north carolina power grid, now being closely followed by the white house. this morning, more than 30,000 people in moore county, about an hour from raleigh, are once again waking up without power after two duke energy substations were riddled with bullets saturday. >> what happened here saturday night was a criminal attack and federal, state and local law enforcement are actively working to bring those responsible to justice. >> reporter: now the department of homeland security, fbi and atf joining local authorities in the hunt for who is behind this critical infrastructure attack. moore county sheriff ronnie

fields tells abc news whoever did this may be liable for not only the damage to the substation but for any related accidents resulting from it. >> it could be classified as murder because what's been done here could cause the death of individuals. what was done, it was an intentional act, it was not a random act. >> reporter: prior to this attack law enforcement officials have warned about the vulnerabilities of the nation's power grid to domestic attacks. robin, as you mentioned, county schools have been closed for aother day and now duke energy officials are hoping to have all power restored by thursday. in the meantime, i spoke with a spokesperson for the regional hospital and she tells me that they are prepared to remain on generator power until then. michael? >> whatever it takes, mona, thank you so much for that. now we turn to the latest on the war in ukraine. in a major development ukraine striking deeper into russian territory than it ever has before with drones attacking two military bases hundreds of miles away. marcus moore is on the scene in

ukraine. good morning, marcus. >> reporter: well, michael, good morning. these strikes were unprecedented, hitting targets thought to be untouchable. as you said, new strikes overnight as ordinary ukrainians here try to stay warm. this morning, a drone attack igniting a russian oil depot seen in video circulating online. the blast coming after ukrainian attacks deep into russian territory monday. video circulating online capturing one of the explosions at a military installation. a top aide to president zelenskyy confirming ukrainian drones hit two russian air bases hundreds of miles across the border, damaging two long-range nuclear capable bombers. this satellite image showing damage to one of the planes from the attack at the air base here. ukraine's air force also sharing these images, they say, show the aircraft. ukraine says the two bases are the staging ground for the brutal russian air campaign in the country. the attack comes as russia launched a barrage of 70 missiles across ukraine but

ukraine touting their air defenses, downing more than 60 of the incoming missiles. and as the fighting rages in the east, we met volunteers in donetsk evacuating the elderly, the disabled and the injured. this work is being done in the midst of constant shelling in the distance. larissa leaving her home of 25 years and her beloved dog uncertain of what lies ahead. nearly two months after an explosion rocked the bridge connecting russia and annexed crimea, vladimir putin visiting the site, driving himself across in a largely symbolic move. putin trying to put on a brave face there. here in ukraine authorities are warning people to prepare for another wave of attacks as russia targets the country's power grid. george? >> marcus moore, thanks. now to the supreme court where oral arguments heard in a case with far-reaching implications for same-sex couples and free speech rights. senior national correspondent terry moran is at the supreme court. good morning, terry. >> reporter: good morning,

george. this is the case of lorie smith, a wedding website designer in colorado, who does not want to do business with gay people. the colorado anti-discrimination law, however, requires that any business open to the general public serve all equally. smith says that civil rights law would force her to endorse gay marriage and violate her free speech. it was clear in this arguments, obvious that the conservatives on this court are deeply sympathetic to smith's position. alito saying the government can't force that or any point of view, but liberals pushed back hard and sonia sotomayor said if the court rules for smith, it would be the first time in history that a commercial business open to the public would be able to deny service on the basis of race or sex or sexual orientation, the first time since the supreme court established those lays back in the 1960s during the civil rights era. justice ketanji brown jackson

forcefully reminded the court that religion was used to justify slavery and segregation as well. so this case as you say has huge implications. we are expecting a decision sometime next june. robin? >> all right, terry, thanks so much. now to opening arguments in the murder trial of a former texas police officer who fatally shot a 28-year-old woman in her own home. mireya villarreal has more, including testimony from the woman's young nphew. >> reporter: this morning, the former texas police officer accused of shooting and killing atatiana jefferson in her home in 2019 is standing trial after multiple delays. >> i really don't like talk about what happened. >> reporter: after opening arguments jefferson's nephew zion carr who was 8 years old at the time of the shooting, testified that he was playing video games with his aunt before witnessing her death. it was an early october morning when aaron dean and his partner showed up at jefferson's house after a neighbor called the department's non-emergency line to report the family's front door was open. >> it's not normal for them to

have the door open at this time of night. >> reporter: zion testifying that his aunt had cracked the door to let in fresh air after cooking some burgers. dean seen in this body cam video approaches the back of the home, never identifying himself as an officer before fatally striking jefferson through her back window. >> put your hands up. >> reporter: zion says his aunt grabbed a handgun from her purse to investigate a noise she heard outside and kept it pointed down but the defense hammering him. >> when we talked before, you said that she did kind of pull the gun up a little bit. do you remember that? >> no, sir. >> i just want you to remember exactly the way you do. do you remember if she had the gun up or down? >> down. >> reporter: the jefferson family meanwhile relieved that their day in court has finally come. >> we've been fighting and fussing about having this day and making sure that, you know, accountability is served for my sister's death. >> reporter: and those jurors have also been the focus of scrutiny.

>> we are looking forward to that. following a lot of headlines this morning as well, including the last lap in the georgia runoff. voters casting their final votes. the race will decide if the senate is an even 50/50 split or the democrats have an outright majority. also, car rental company hertz will pay $170 million after falsely claiming some of its customers had stolen its vehicles resulting in some paying customers being arrested at gunpoint. please take a look at new footage of the eruption at the mauna loa volcano. the lava flow is moving closer to a major highway in hawaii which runs nearly the length of the big island. the national guard has been activated. and ucla's undefeated women's soccer team are national champions pulling off a miracle comeback against north carolina. they were down a goal with just 16 seconds left but they tied the game with the corner kick and then went on in the second overtime and scored a third unanswered goal to beat unc, 3-2, and capture their second national title. congratulations to the ucla women's soccer team.

fraternity. >> why are you looking for more information specifically about where xana and ethan were? in regards to his fraternity house. >> that actually seems to be one of the larger areas we don't have a lot of information in, so being able to locate what they did that night to maybe who they contacted, maybe any routes they took home, that would be important for the investigation. >> reporter: xana and ethan stabbed to death less than a block away along with kaylee goncalves and madison mogen who were found on the top floor. two roommates survived along with kaylee's dog seen in this tiktok video. authorities now say the dog was found inside the home but in a separate room from the victims. how important is the behavior of the dog in your investigation? >> we don't believe that there was any appearance of forced entry into the home, as well at

there's a picture of meghan and harry carrying little baby archie. it was taken when they were on a tour of cape town and it was inside the home of archbishop tutu. i was standing where this picture was taken in an accredited position, which you know all about, and next to the press secretary to them for that particular trip, which was a taxpayer-funded trip.fact washes implicatiothat they re hoded by the media a there were three accredited reporters in a position that they'd agreed standing next to the press secretary. so i found that uncomfortable that that was the narrative they were trying to get across in the trailer which was simply not true. >> what are you hearing from buckingham palace? >> well, the moment they're keeping quiet, george, because i think they don't want to get involved in any tit for tat rows at the moment. they haven't seen the rest of the documentary. like you and like everybody i

haven't seen the documentary yet so i can't make any judgment. they are going to wait until they've seen all of it. there is talk, though, they will be pushing back if there are clear inaccuracies that they believe are wrong and they may well do that. but at the moment they're doing nothing at all and they're going to sit and watch and wait. >> we've heard these allegations before but harry and meghan appear to be doubling down about charges of racism. >> well, that's going to be their perspective. all i can say i have no experience of that. i would say that just repeat what prince william has said that they're not a racist family. i also know that in the last few months that william at the behest of the king has been driving a diversity drive at the palace. i think there's 8.52% ethnic minorities working for the royal household. they want to push that up to around 15%, 18%, and i know william is very much behind that. but equally, you know, like a lot of institutions, not only in london and around the world and

moore county. now, duke energy has been making progress restoring power to about 7,000 households yesterday but that is still just a fraction of the 45,000 households affected by this massive blackout. meanwhile, the hunt is still on for whoever orchestrated this attack. the department of homeland security, the fbi and atf have all joined this investigation and the white house is closely monitoring the situation. the moore county sheriff says that this intentional sabotage has been eye opening as it underscores how vulnerable the nation's power grid is to domestic attacks. he says he is in communication with state officials about what improvements can be made. he also reiterated the seriousness of this attack adding that whoever is responsible could potentially face murder charges if someone dies as a result of this blackout. robin. >> all right, mona, thank you for your reporting. now to the nominees for one of the nfl's most prestigious awards, walter payton man of the year. each team has a nominee for the

for me i just remember being really inspired by books growing up, so to just pass it on to the next generation is cool. >> how did it personally for you, naomi, yes a pro athlete, but even if you hadn't gone into professional sports how did playing athletics, how has it just helped you in every aspect of your life beyond being the pro player that you are? >> yeah, i think it definitely taught me like perseverance, but i also think it taught me a lot of stubbornness which may not be good but i think it's worked out in my favor and just like being dedicated. >> that dedication and that's something that is so important and what you need in all aspects of life and can we just say, thank you so much, you have used your voice, you stepped up and you said, i need to take care of my mental well-being. and other people really started to look and follow suit. why was it important for you to be so open about that and thank

you for being so open about it. >> oh, yeah, well, i kind of pride myself in being a really honest person and that gets me in trouble sometimes, but i don't know, i like to express how i feel and for me it was ki so i guess that's how everything happened, but i wouldn't have wanted it any other way because i learned a lot during that time. >> what did you learn? >> i don't know, i think that for me i felt like it was necessary, but i kind of felt ashamed in that moment because as an athlete you're kind of told to like be strong and kind of push through everything, but i think i learned that it's better to like regroup and address the feelings that you have in that moment and you can come back stronger. >> yes, indeed. and you're coming back as an author and doing all these different things and you have an organization, remind me what the name of it. >> play academy. >> play academy where you really

encourage especially community sports and also the proceeds from your book is going to help. so can you tell folks a little bit more about your organization. >> so play academy is basically an organization where we give grants to like schools and other organizations around the world so that little girls and boys can play and there are activities and little like after-school programs and stuff. >> it's wonderful to do that because, you know, because a lot of sports is being eliminated in the schools so to be able to have community programs like you're really doing varied places is xtremely helpful so let me get this right. you're an author and started a production company, okay. you've got this -- the book coming out. people want to know, will you be returning to the court in 2023? what can we expect from you on the court? >> i don't know. for me i feel like i'm a very curious person, so i've really been grateful to be given all these avenues to explore, so i'm

this one? >> i think in my opinion it's the greatest super bowl victory of all time, certainly the greatest upset of all time. when you stop and think about the new england patriots under belichick and brady, the number one scoring team in the history of the national football league and in week 17, they beat us 38-35 and, of course, the super bowl a few weeks later was nothing like that game because for our defense to do what we did on that particular day, to hold that team to 14 points, it's incredible. >> yeah, pretty unheard of. no one could stop them all season. and there's one thing you said throughout the year that really stuck with us, tell me i can't do it. you always say that. where does that come from. >> that's my whole life. i started out in a small town, waterloo, new york, a little town, and very much involved in athletics and so on and so forth. but the great motivator for me, never had a lot of good jobs but someone would say i can't do something, that was a little -- that was something that gave me a little extra inspiration and a little extra hope and i think
