us the county's message. >> for the last two winters in the bay area the holiday cheer was clouded for some due to the pandemic but with no health mandates this year in santa clara county, some are feeling better about covid. >> i was worrying about something -- now it's some i don't have any trouble. >> not all agree, some worry the threat is still out there. >> i think we all decided it is over but it is not over. so we are not taking the same precautions we were, it does make me nervous. baxley public health officer says it it they are not ready to say it is over. she even says the south bay is facing a problem we have not seen before. >> we not only have covid as we have had the last two winters we have flu and rsv and other viruses circulating as well. it's like a winter of viral soup. >> the doctor says cases are beginning to plateau in santa

clara county but flu cases continue to rise after the start. as for covid, some of the highest numbers of the year. >> you can see all of those lines are heading straight up. i want to note something else which is that two of those lines are actually higher than they were during the omnicron at peak. >> the doctor says the viral surge is stretching the health department thin and she is calling on the community for help getting a covid booster and flu shot. she also recommends masking in indoor and crowded settings. do you see in indoor mass mandate returning? >> i don't see mandates returning. i think three years and it is extraordinarily difficult to mandate and i think we all have information and we all have tools and we all have access to those tools. all of us need to do what we can and that includes getting boosted. >> the doctor says that action could mean a healthy holiday ahead. in santa clara county abc7news.

>> for most americans it looks like this holiday season and the new year will not involve major concern about covid-19, a new poll shows 70% of the country believes we are at a point where the virus no longer disrupts everyday life. 69% say the government should resume funding for covid monitoring and prevention, 34% feel enough has been spent. those asked were split on how covid should be dealt with going forward. >> today state health and human services secretary gave an update on the three viruses circulating in california and across the country. rsv, the flu and covid-19. the doctor says rsv is on the decline but the number of flu and covid patients is now becoming concerning. >> today in the hospital and covid combined is about 6100 and we are expecting the flu is going to reach somewhere around 10,000 towards the end of this

month and potentially early next month. >> the doctor says if you have not gotten the covid-19 booster yet you should do it now. >> a surge of sick adults and children has led to high demand for over-the-counter medicine and that is leading to stores running low on things like tamiflu and tylenol. abc7news reporter s some doctors who offered advice about what to do if you cannot find medicine. >> as these viruses spread, especially among children, people are making a run for medications and that is resulting in shortages around the bay area. doctors tell us if you can find something like children's tylenol, stock up. if you can't there are alternatives. >> as anyone who has driven from drugstore to drugstore the past few days can tell you, getting your hands on children's tylenol is nearly impossible. step one, here in marin county a cvs. inside we found this, cleared

out shelves where the children's tylenol would usually be. it just a few boxes of generic left. here at drugstore number two. same story. this was at a nearby rite aid. and then a walgreens a few blocks away, the shelves even more empty. >> it's now clear we are seeing significant surges in all three of those seasonal respiratory viruses. >> the shortage of over-the-counter drugs for kids comes amid the triple epidemic of rsv, covid and the flu. the health director says covid-19 cases and hospitalizations in the county have doubled in the past month. for the flu, it is even more dramatic. >> one in four people who are having flu like symptoms right now in marin it will get tested, are in fact infected with influenza, that is the highest percent positivity we have ever seen. >> all of that to say that's why so many medications are sold out. for both adults and children. >> there is definitely a shortage in over-the-counter children's tylenol and pediatric

formulations for ibuprofen, cold medicines -- and we have been hearing was all over the country. >> this dr. says there are alternatives if parents cannot find it children's tylenol or a similar generic brand. >> if you have any questions talk to the pharmacist. there are other tricks people can use as well like taking 200 milligrams of an adult form and depending on the size of the kid, mixing it, crushing it in chocolate milk. >> another tip if a child has a low fever, use a cool towel or compress or even a fan. >> these are minor interventions that do not require medicine if the fever is mild. >> there is also a shortage of tamiflu for both adults and children, you can lessen some of the flu but this doctor says hospitals really need it for the most at risk patients so even if you can find it right now he

recommends only getting it if you really need it. in the newsroom abc7news. >> are doctor saying there's any end in sight to this? >> dr. hong says rsv cases might be peaking but it will still be around for the next few months, a silver lining for covid is that even though cases are rising people are not getting as sick as they were two years ago. as for the flu that is the dark horse that is likely to continue to spike. the best advice doctors have, get the vaccine and mask up. >> interest in the theft of an amazon truck today, an amazon vehicle was stolen this morning when the delivery driver stepped away to deliver a package. it was equipped with gps and police were able to track down the van in oakland. police say they saw several people rummaging through the contents of the van, the suspects took off but police were able to catch three of them. >> this afternoon san francisco's supervisors reversed course and voted to block the

use of robots is a deadly option in certain situations. it supervisors voted eight to three to amend a section of a policy approved last week as we reported, which allowed the limited use of these remote control devices. these remote control robots. last week's vote prompted public outcry that led to today's change. the police chief had advocated for the use of robots as a deadly option saying his department needs the option to be able to save lives if necessary. >> in the east bay it came down to drawing a name, to decide who sits on the richmond cityctn ended in a tie, each getting 1900 and 21 votes. >> which is remarkable and hard to believe but that led to today's unusual tiebreaker. abc reporter has the story. >> starting with writing down their own names in sharpie, placing it into identical unmarked envelopes, this is the moment when a political office was determined by drawing names out of a christmas gift bag.

you think of the most iconic things san francisco is known for, the transamerica pyramid has got to be one of them right? >> absolutely. >> the building is celebrating 50 years. >> now there are new plans to make it a centerpiece of the city's proposal to reinvent the downtown area. our abc news reporter explains what that means exactly. >> the transamerica building is a defining symbol of san francisco, built in 1970 two, it's futuristic look quickly made it one of the most recognizable buildings in the world.

now the future of downtown san francisco may have to rely on its 400 million dollar renovation which also includes the two surrounding buildings. >> this renovation, 400 $1 million, is a testament to not what was but what will be over the next 50 years in san francisco. >> the plan is to make the transamerica pyramid center at the heart of downtown. transforming the area into a neighborhood within a city. >> that it has a nightlife, part of that is having an ground-floor destinations, restaurants, other visitor opportunities, and part of that is having a 24 hour presence of people who live there. >> the media, the pundits, the real estate professionals said san francisco is dead. >> michael it should vote did not believe them and purchased the building during covid. >> this is me and my sister at the base of the building. >> his love for the pyramid

began during a visit to san francisco in 1979 when he was only seven years old. through the years many more people have come to admire the structure from above and below. the transamerica building has also been a favorite of many of us news reporters because who would not want to go to the top to record what we call a stand up? notice how i am not standing? that's me in 1999. climbing 200 feet to the top of el capitan is like climbing the transamerica building in downtown san francisco four times over. >> it has always been ahead of its time, the city is ahead of its time and together with the people of san francisco we will bring back downtown. >> the city hopes the building's new purpose will help redefine what urban living should look like. in san francisco abc7news. >> here's a about the transamerica, the original pyramid design was supposed to be in new york, not san francisco.

in the 60's, abc was looking into building a new headquarters in manhattan. >> the firm that built the building submitted a black façade initially, it was supposed to serve as a transmission tower, however abc said the concept was too bold and the rest is san francisco history. so it san francisco's gain is new york's loss. while apple will buying u.s.-made microchips, the chips will be produced in a new factory in arizona which will be owned and operated by taiwan at semiconductors manufacturing company. the company produces advanced processors including the chips in the latest iphones and max, today biden visited the facility. earlier he signed a law that includes billions of dollars in incentives for countries that build chip manufacturing capabilities on u.s. soil. now we have this one in arizona.

the san francisco department of building inspection is investigating complaints that twitter has converted some conference rooms into makeshift bedrooms, bunk rooms for employees. the communications director tells abc7news that they have reached out to twitter to conduct a site inspection as part of their investigation, if it no longer meets code they will issue an issue of violation. -- they treat all property owners and complaints the same and they expect to initiate an investigation within 72 hours of time, twitter so far has not responded. >> in hawaii a volcano continues to erupt, fountains of lava have been shooting out since last week and they are starting to lose near critical highways. still officials maintain the lava is not currently threatening communities or properties that they are watching it closely. >> it has gotten more dicey the last couple days. in the meantime a nice day for

cam, some clouds rolling through blue sky above. mid-50's from novato to santa rosa. look at this gorgeous picture from our pier 39 camera. some more sun tomorrow to enjoy that is for sure. it looks like the sea lions are enjoying it as well. it mainly clear and cold inland. the next round of rain arrives thursday afternoon and a stronger storm coming in on saturday. the concern is the freezing cold conditions we are expecting, a freeze warning for the north bay and mountains. one to 9 a.m. tomorrow, subfreezing conditions upper 20's to low 30's. we definitely will see the potential for frost and freeze to damage plants, bring them inside or cover them and don't forget about your pets. temperatures first thing in the morning down to 29 in santa rosa, 32 in napa, just above freezing in fairfield, 30's in concord, looking at low to mid 40's in oakland to san francisco

with clear skies. tomorrow afternoon you will see plenty of's on out there, temperatures in the mid to upper 50's this is your day to get outside and get any stuff you need to get done. putting up your decorations or doing holiday shopping, it is your window. running errands -- and then here comes another storm. welcome here in the bay area this is thursday afternoon. first and the north bay spreading across the region by nightfall, friday in the morning some lingering showers and then the rains all intensity picks up as our second storm comes in saturday. a week atmosphere component to it so it looks like it is going to soak us on saturday with showers continuing into sunday. we will take you through the first system, that is not a big storm thursday night into friday morning we are looking at generally a 10th to a half an inch. this computer model is really ramping up the rainfall totals by sunday night, most of it falling on saturday, we could see several inches of rain.

all eyes are on georgia today, the polls close today about a half hour ago in the crucial senate runoff race between incumbent rafael warnock and republican challenger herschel walker. >> republicans are trying to flip the seat to keep the senate a 50-50 while democrats hope to strengthen their majority with 19% of precincts reporting right now, warnock is leading 63 to 37%. >> are abc news reporter has the latest. >> georgians are voting in droves heading back to the polls in this high-stakes runoff race. >> i voted for herschel, i think he would do a good job. >> i trust mr. warnock much more significantly than his opponent. >> incumbent democratic senator warnock and republican challenger herschel walker both campaigning in the final hours as ballots are cast, both candidates going after each other's character. warnock with this message earlier. >> the people of georgia at someone who will walk with them

the vote in bring you results from georgia. >> san francisco police are keeping a close eye on state senator scott wiener's home because of a death threat. our media partner the san francisco standard alerted police and wiener after receiving an email from someone claiming they placed bombs at his house. and planned to shoot up his sacramento office. the search turned up nothing. >> extremely homophobic, and unfortunately because of some of the online attacks on me from marjorie taylor greene and others it riles people up and this is what we are seeing in the united states today. extremist right-wing rhetoric that leads to threats of violence. >> earlier this year he told the chronicle he typically gets as many as five death threats a week but lately he says there have been between 20 to 30 sent his way. >> law enforcement officers who defended the u.s. during the january 6 insurrection received

time now -- is climate change discouraging some people from having children? and abc news poll finds quarter of americans 18 to 45 say climate change has made them reconsider having a child. people under 35 are more likely to say climate impacts childbearing decisions. it is an interesting debate. sandy i will start with you, i think we have had this kind of debates many times depending on what is happening around the country and globally. not necessarily climate change but other stressful things happening in our lives that make people wonder if it's a good child to bring a chat -- time to bring a child into the world. >> we all know climate change is

happening, there's evidence, we are seeing it happen, but for some group of people not to have children because of climate change, it is surprising. i understand that you are adding to that footprint, so perhaps that's weighing into their consideration of whether or not to have children. >> i think that's mostly part of it, i have heard that a lot. i have to give credit to the younger generations for caring about the planet, realizing how much of a carbon footprint each individual person adds to it. i think also there's a whole generation of people who are realizing i don't have to just check every box of graduate high school, graduate college, get married, have children, they have choices in life. and can do what they want to do. they seem to really care about the planet. >> i agree and that is thinking about it in a different way. although without these children who will pay for our retirement? >> i have thought about that too, after 9/11 i did think do i want to bring children into this

a new study from stanford is taking a hard look at a sometimes controversial linchpin of water systems, reservoirs and the dams built to create them. as abc 7 found out, findings are shedding new light on both the challenges and potential rewards if they are

managed efficiently. >> dams and reservoirs help supply drinking water and hydroelectric power to nations around the world. that water is also critical to another life and death calculation now and in the future, our available global food supply. enter this researcher and his colleagues who set out to measure the relationship between dams and food security. >> we are trying to understand how much water storage is required to feed future agriculture and produce food from that agriculture that the world urgently needs. >> they focused on storage fed irrigation which they estimate could help feed more than one billion people worldwide at maximum capacity. that includes new dams that are proposed for construction in countries that face food insecurity. >> having more storage in those places would be critical and could drive an enormous increase in food production.

this year will be their last. abc 7 reporter brings us the families touching story. >> just sky every night in december, a christmas spectacular comes alive in vallejo. for the past 23 years bob taylor and his wife linda have been decorating their home with all the joys of the holiday season. >> that first year we started decorating we did not have very much stuff but the next year got bigger and brighter and every year after that it was bigger and brighter. >> the entire project is estimated to be about one million lights and it takes three months to set up. with most of the cost coming out of the taylor's own pocket. it features everything from carousels to ferris wheels and sometimes even a visit from the big man himself. if you come out to the house you will be blown away by these amazing decorations one thing you might not know is that there
