pushed into the north bay and central part of the bay area already. this storm ranks one on the scale. through this evening, periods of light to moderate rainfall or showers. we expect another -- one third of an inch of rain. here is the early evening, rain coming down steadily in some spots through the evening commute until 8:00 or 9:00. it begins to taper off and overnight, mainly cloudy skies. a stronger storm is coming in for the weekend. for the remainder of this storm, anywhere from a few hundredths of an inch to about one third of an inch. let's look at the approaching next storm that will be powerful. ranking at least two, possibly three. it will produce strong wind and heavy rain and has already resulted in a winter storm warning issued for the sierra

lot. traffic is moving well. larry: given it is 4:03 and a somewhat rainy day, this is fantastic traffic. kristen: through oakland, yeah. larry: heading towards often stop and go. i am likely to jinx this. but, everybody is driving the speed limit. this is our mountain cam we should mention, it is not somebody holding a camera. everything is good and hopefully it will stay that way through the afternoon. the national weather service has traveled to the sierra. it is going to be nearly impossible this weekend. caltrans camera is showing you what it looked like a few hours ago with no snow on the roads but a winter storm watches calling for three to five feet of snow above 5000 feet. you can keep track of the storm and check the forecast any time

broken a record. the city saw its 61st pedestrian traffic death of the year. larry: dustin dorsey looked into west city doing keep streets safe. >> after another death wednesday, sadness is not the only thing neighbors feel. >> so angry. they just had a big prayer vigil. i was in tears. absolutely absurd. dustin: maria marcello was leading a group in a traditional christmas celebration when a car hit and killed her along little orchard street, according to her organization. her death was the 61st traffic death in 2022, a record in san jose history. >> any traffic fatality is one too many. >> it is a sad day. dustin: we heard similar messages from city leaders following each pedestrian fatality date this year. despite promises to make streets

safer, deaths continue. >> streets have not gotten more dangerous to to infrastructure. but this problem keeps diluting our grasp. bad behavior seems to be progressing faster than we can keep up with. dustin: please say that is where traffic tickets come into play but an understaffed enforcement unit is limiting the impact they can have. >> citing people for traffic relations is sometimes what it takes. >> moore -- enforcement lead to less death? >> we would hope so. in years gone by, we had 50 officers out there. today, 13. dustin: these are problems the mayor elect will tackle. he says enforcement, education and engineering have to be emphasized to get people to follow traffic laws. >> this terrible tragedy should focus our attention on the most basic needs. safety is at the top of the list.

i am confident we can move the needle, but it is going to take time. this is about behavior change. dustin: he says he is planning on using technology to identify specific problem areas and implement improvements to make the streets safe again. larry: name of a new study looking at migration patterns of people to wildfire prone areas. this is important in the west where we have seen a rise in destructive fires. melanie woodrow has more. >> researchers with the university of vermont intrigued by natural disasters wondered if people would move away from areas prone to devastation. their study found results that surprised them. >> while people do seem to be discouraged -- they have actually -- attracted to

council members are responding to the homeless crisis, he used all of the funds from the mayor's community fund and paid one year of rent to house nine families. now, he has a month left in his term as mayor and he is not stopping. >> i don't think anything makes me happier than doing something like that for people. i don't have a lot of time left anyway. it is just for christmas, why not? >> i was going to decorate my trailer and stuff, but i got that news so i guess i'll wait till i get there. hopefully it is before christmas because i am ready. i wish it was tomorrow. luz: a landlord and san pablo agreed to house them. they still do not have a move-in date but is opening it will happen before christmas so she can put her tree up. the mayor is hoping more people will donate to house more families before his term is up.

a chance mayor london breed could be signing it at the end of january. larry: traffic and weather on the sevens. a live look from the east bay on 880 south as we approach the coliseum. i mentioned earlier, this is pretty light traffic for this hour. we had a little congestion. this is still pretty good as we see cars making their way to the coliseum. you can see the sign there, steady as she goes. kristen: but, more drops are coming. we want to get the timeline now from spencer. spencer: it is good the traffic is light because driving conditions are going to deteriorate. here is live doppler seven and you can see widespread rainfall. most of it is light with areas of some moderate rain but the moderate rain does not last long. the heaviest and stead is here from san francisco to berkeley.

you can see darker areas indicating heavy rainfall. here's a look from the tower, looking dreary. temperatures in the mid-50's. 54 to 56 degrees everywhere. santa clara and half moon bay. the golden gate does not appear to be wet yet but there is rain in the north moving this direction. low to mid 50's, a little cooler in some spots. mid-50's at napa. the view from our rooftop camera looking across the wet embarcadero, light to moderate rain will taper off overnight. a stronger storm saturday bringing heavy rain and gusty wind. a winter storm warning will be in effect in the sierra. our current storm ranks one on the impact scale. light to moderate showers, slippery commute. maybe a third of an inch of rainfall from this system.
