heavy rain gusty wind miner localized flooding is possible. maybe even a thunderstorm or two of this storm forecast animation starts at 11 o'clock tonight notice how the storm surges in rapidly during the early morning hours six o'clock tomorrow morning. it'll be raining all across the bay area heavily in some spots a company by gusts of wind up to 45 miles per hour and the storm is going to continue overnight tomorrow night into sunday is some of our main storm concerns are very high concerns about hazardous travel flooding on roadways high concerns about down tree lines, maybe even more moderate concerned about power outages and this storm is going to be a big snow producer for the sierra. we're to storm warning will be in effect from 10 o'clock tonight to 4 am monday. we're talking about two to five feet of snow in the sierra snow levels dropping down to 3500 feet with wind gust up to 60 miles per hour travel is going to be nearly impossible. i'll have the complete accuweather seven day forecast. said a few minutes brandon deon. all right, looking forward to that spencer. thanks now. the holiday shopping season is in full swing but with the rain on the way, it could put a damper on some people's plans at

fire season for better for worse is very close to year-round now here in northern california across much of the western united states. and so that means we get a little respite here in these winter months hill is with the contra costa county fire protection district. he says vegetation fires aren't just limited to the traditional fire season anymore. the longer term forecasts predict another dry winter for much of california. he'll says these small storms keep the ground moist which will help limit the spread of wildfires even in winter months in the last few weeks. we have certainly responded to a number of vegetation fires. they just don't go anywhere very fast. anyway, because because of the dam conditions we have the bay area may get one to two inches of rain this weekend with minor flooding in some parts down trees and isolated power outages are also possible in areas that get high gusts of wind. back at the broadway plaza some

this is the north san jose neighborhood where the shooting happened on october 2nd the santa clara county district attorney's office just filed the complaint this week against the suspect 66 year old mark henry waters who is white according to the da the victim was a 21 year old black man police reports. we obtained at the santa clara county courthouse say the victim was renting a room through airbnb at this home across the street from the suspect the san jose police officer who took the victim statement reported that he said he was going to save way to get some udon noodles and juice he went on to say that when he went out he crossed the street and before he was even on the other side of the road the suspect approached him and shot him when he saw the gun he turned and tried to run behind a car but was shot before he could make it police say it was the suspect water so called 911 the police report also detailed what he told officer saying the victim walked toward him. he thought that the victim had a gun. he later realized it was a pair of headphones police say at that point. he asked for an attorney and declined to comment any further but stated later specifically quote.

i can't take it back. would i have done i have paid the price. i blanked up. we went to the home of waters and did not get an answer at the door. we also reached out to his attorney who said he had no comment at this time police also looked at surveillance video from neighbors the victims suffered a gunshot wound in his leg that resulted in a broken femur. the injuries were non-life threatening waters who has been out on bail is charged with assault with a semi-automatic firearm a felony charge police are investigating potential hate crime alleg. nations waters is expected to be in court monday afternoon for arraignment in san jose zach fuentes. abc 7 news. turning now to the latest on the increase in covid cases as hospitals across the state report a peak in hospitalizations abc 7 news reporter loose peña spoke to multiple doctors about what they're seeing locally. she joins us live from the newsroom and loose this is a little bit alarming. yes, deanna hospitalizations are a key indicator of how covid impacting our community local hospitals are now seeing the signs of a steady increase even

comparing our winter numbers with the peak in the summer. covid hospitalizations are increasing throughout the state the last time california had over 4,000 people in the hospital with covid was in july. i think the challenges the numbers are rising and so we don't really know where this peak will will plateau locally, dr. johann fahimi medical director of the emergency department at ucsf says their hospital in many cases this patients being hospitalized for something else who also happen to have covid as hospitalizations increase statewide transmission levels are also changing according to this cdc map. the majority of the state is in the yellow meaning under the medium covid-19 community levels of transmission. we have seen our covid numbers sort of settling increasing sense mid-october and yesterday we move from cdc low into cdc medium level in alameda a

thursday. 7 day average case rate is 21 cases per 100,000 residents and 149. people are in the hospital with covid-19. now they're updating their mask requirements. we are aligned with the state masking guidance. so we don't we have not instituted any new requirements ourselves here in alameda county, but according to the state when we move into medium certain certain locations need to require masking for staff and residence and those include shelters for unhowed per house on house persons correctional facilities and warming centers. what about the state in a statement california's department of public health setting part. we're not considering a statewide masking mandate at this time as always local governments, may implement separate and more strict policies. despite the increase in hospitalizations, dr. locke is

hopeful this is certainly been something that we have anticipated. you know, we're in a place now, now both doctors pointed out that even though covid numbers are increasing the majority of people testing positive are not experiencing severe illness, and we're only learning about those numbers through wastewater data because people are testing more at home in the newsroom news peña abc 7 news how interesting that is where the data comes from loose before you go, you know question here if more people are testing positive now does that mean they're immunity from the booster has maybe diminished? dion according to the cdc the protection from boosters begins to fade around four months from the shot. so people got their boosters in the summer. this would be around the time that it's helpful to get a second shot for that extra layer of protection, but the data is showing that only 15% of californians eligible to get a booster have gotten one. alright also a good reminder there loose many. thanks. now alameda county is the only bay area county listed as medium

impacting final exam preparations workers on strike continue pushing to have the uc system meet their demands one aspect of it is what our raises your tier will look like but even then just the base wage itself is a huge issue. certainly the base wage is truly unlivable with the cost of living here the strike involving grad student instructors and researchers is almost approaching one month students now say the strike is disrupting. they're learning. it's been a lot of self studying and yeah finals coming of course. it's scary because the grades it means so much for the far future uc berkeley is set to begin semester final exams on monday and a magnetic says her class won't be tested on the full material my understanding. is that our final for the class is going to not cover or at least not as much the topics that we've been covering the last few weeks grad student instructors are one of the groups undergoing labor negotiations with the uc system

level 2 storm arrives overnight. i mean in the early morning hours right after midnight moderates heavy rainfall. along with strong gusty winds and a winter storm warning is in effect for the sierra for the weekend. the exclusive abc 7 storm impact scale indicates. the approaching storm is a moderate level 2 storm. so starting just after midnight and continuing through tomorrow. we expect heavy rain gusty wind miner localized flooding may occur, and there's a chance even of some isolated thunderstorms. we'll start with the forecast animation at 11 o'clock tonight notice how quickly after midnight the storm surges end by six o'clock tomorrow morning. we're going to have widespread rain moderate to heavy these darker colors the oranges and reds indicate areas of heaviest rainfall a company by wind gusts up to about 45 miles per hour at times. it's going to be a very strong astronomy and messy morning and midday as well with just a little bit of a break in the late afternoon before the next wave of storm activity moves through tomorrow night and that will continue through the day on sunday before breaking up on monday.

let's talk about overnight conditions planning to take an early morning walk overnight lows will be mainly in the mid to upper 40s and of course it'll be rainy and windy highs tomorrow afternoon in a fairly. range mainly mid to upper 50s, that's about as high as it's going to get. let's talk about our wind advisory which will be in effect from 2 am tomorrow to 3 pm. we're talking about generally winds out of the south 20 to 30 miles per hour southwest 20-30 miles per hour gusts up to about 50 miles per hour at times especially over the higher elevations and being on the lookout for blowing outdoor objects or downed tree lines. a tree limbs i should sayinfalle to two inches. that's a lot of rainfall in the main storm concerns are for hazardous travel flooding on the roadways and again down to tree limbs over in the sierra winter storm warning and effect from ten o'clock tonight to 4 am monday. we're talking about two to five feet of snow likely there winds will be gusting 60 miles per hour even stronger in the higher

highest elevations. so travel into and out of the sierra will be nearly impossible. here's the accuweather 7-day forecast even on sunday as a storm begins to weekend. it'll still be a level one with periods of light rain and showers and maybe even some lingering showers into monday morning before we get some clearing skies on tuesday, but even after it dries out next week, right you're going to have really chilly weather with daytime highs barely breaking 50 degrees for most of the week. it's been cold lately. it really has been. okay. all right spencer. thanks yosemite national park will once again require reservations from mid to late february. you it's yearly and iconic firefall the attraction occurs when the sunset hits the back of horsetail waterfall on el capitan creating a fire like illusion this year. they did not require reservations, but they are changing that for 2023 because of the amount of traffic congestion. it creates reservations open up on the park's website, wednesday, december 15th at 7 a.m. how pretty stunning
