winter storm warnings with rough wind and possible lightning, forcing a tahoe resort to clear the mountain. abc7news starts now. >> building a better bay area, moving forward, finding solutions, this is abc7news. >> hi, everybody. i am dion lim. you are watching an early edition because of the warriors game next. we begin the storm watch. have lyme team coverage -- live team coverage on this level two storm on the exclusive abc 7 storm impact scale. let's go to spencer with a look at how much rain we will see this weekend. spencer: it looks like we will have between one to two inches of rain in most places and even more in others. we have had a drenching already. here is live doppler 7, heaviest steadiest rain is moving along the peninsula coast line up and down the peninsula, we saw have areas of heavy rainfall. we had gusts over 50 miles per hour in some places so we are keeping this rating on the

exclusive storm impact scale at a level two because through this evening, although there will be breaks here and there, more periods of rain, heavy at times, a chance of strong gusty winds, minor localized flooding is likely and we could even have thunderstorms. there is a forecast at 5:00 p.m. and little breaks here and there but wave after wave of stormy weather will continue swinging through the bay area into the overnight and early morning hours tomorrow and as you mentioned, still snowing heavily in the sierra. winter storm warnings in effect until 4:00 a.m. monday and we expect up to five feet or more of snow with wind gusts over 60 miles per hour. dion: that is intense. thank you. like you mentioned, this is a level two storm on abc 7 storm impact scale. it is dumping so much rain in the north the national weather service issued two flood advisories today. abc7news reporter cornell barnard continues our live coverage. with the impact, the heavy rain, and powerful winds where he is.

>> hey. we just -- i just started raining again, what a day, all that heavy wind and rain toppling trees and it even brought flooding to highway 101. the storm was intense, bringing fears, heavy rains, driving treacherous on highway 101 in san rafael. there was street flooding in bill valley and nearby pick we inland overflowed into the soccer field. then there was the wind. >> first the fire department came, they are the ones that put out the yellow barrier there. >> gilliam show this giant live oak tree which toppled onto wickham drive saturday morning. bringing a powerful down with it. electricity was knocked out to several homes for her luckily no one was hurt. >> the storm was unusual. i have been here 45 years so this is not something frequent.

santana row and the entire surrounding area really, it is hopping, cars are piling to the parking lots and people are popping up the umbrellas but we can tell you it is wreaking havoc on the local highways here it on our way down from san francisco, we saw multiple cars off of the road as well as many accidents as we were making our way down here but not keeping the shoppers away. >> it made us put on jackets, that is pretty much it. put on jackets and grab umbrellas. but it is not stopping us. >> did you hesitate to get out here knowing how it was? >> not at all. we plan on coming out today, it is my son's 27th birthday, so we came out and had mexican food to have a great day. >> it's a horribly rainy day, did you hesitate to get out? >> no, i love the rain. it is my favorite so it makes sense. >> a lot of holiday spirit out

here today, but this weather can be problematic for people, even dangerous. santa clara county has opened up warming centers at all of his public libraries in effort to keep people safe through this storm. you can feel the temperature dropping a bit so it will be important. dion: many thanks to you, trying to stay dry in south bay. a car crash on slippery peninsula roads for staple closure on part of highway one. it was shut down north of the tom lantos tunnel. all lanes were shut down at 2:30 this afternoon and traffic was a mess. chp alternated one open lane in each direction. the storm is keeping pg&e busy with a number of outages. we are at one point some -- i one point, some 10,000 people were without power. the most intense problem areas on this map, the areas in orange have the highest number of customers without power. pg&e has been stockpiling extra transformers and other equipment

to prepare for the storm. this powerful storm is leading to transit delays and event cancellations. people can expect bart delays up to 20 minutes. the oakland zoo will be closed today and their festival has been canceled. paid reservations for the event will get emails about refunds. those people who did make the reservations. windsor's winter fair is canceled but the broadway on ice show that they move indoors to windsor's jim. fairfield -- windsor's gym. the santa visit with children is propos -- postponed to monday, december 12. in the north bay, near woods is closed due to the storm. the golden gate national recreation area says high wind and potential damage could impact the area. all reservations today will be automatically refunded. mere woods opens to tomorrow. taking a live look at san francisco international air or, where it certainly looks soggy.

rain can sometimes wreak havoc on travel plans but the bay area biggest airport so far handled wet weather without too much inconvenience for travelers. according to the website flightaware.com -- flightaware.com, just six canceled flights since last night. oakland airport has not had any and san jose airport has had one canceled flight. our storm plast lead to a winter storm warning in the sierra, nevada, and treacherous driving, taking a look at some parts of i-80 and highway 50 in the tahoe area, where chains are required. about half hour ago, caltrans says it is shutting down i-80 between kingvale and truckee in the sierra because a blowing snow and near zero visibility. there is no estimated time to reopen the highways. you can see roads are wet while others are just packed with snow. a 250 mile stretch of the sierra north of reno to south of yosemite national park is under a winter storm warning, at least

dion: the rain was not enough to stop an event that takes dozens of handguns and assault weapons off of the streets. the organization united playas host to their this morning. donors get $100 for each handgun

dion: the good news is i saw a little bit of blue sky. spencer: just for a brief period of time. we do not have the steady continuous rainfall earlier that we had, but we get waves of rain here let me walk over and show you what's going on. here's live doppler 7, a lot of what weather. some of the heaviest activity is just moving onshore to the peninsula, south of san bruno and pushing toward san mateo. it is still wet and still windy. the strongest winds have eased r elevations, it is quite gusty, nearly already in the valley. so the storm is still with us. here's a view at the golden gate

bridge, northward because that's the storm arrived. 55 degrees and -- in most locations. half moon bay also mid-50's, san jose and santa rare -- santa farah. sort of a view from maryville looking at dark clouds over the san francisco bay. temperatures in the mid-50's and other locations as well in santa rosa, napa, fairfield, concord, a two degree variation. the view from the rooftop camera looking across the embarcadero, these are the forecast features. it will be rainy and windy, little breaks here and there in the storm will ease up overnight. light rain and showers tomorrow and it will be turning colder early next week. the storm on the exclusive abc 7 storm impact scale is a level -- level two moderate storm through the evening and occasionally gusty winds, minor localized flooding still a possibility, still a chance of slight -- a slight chance of thunder. into the evening hours, we will

see waves of rain coming through, could be heavy at timeg through. we will call it moderate to heavy rain into the overnight hours accompanied by occasional gusts. overnight lows mainly in the mid-40's. highs tomorrow mid-50's, not much variation. still snowing in the sierra this winter storm warning is in effect until four clock amide and we expect five feet of snow in the areas hardest hit, gusts up to 60. it goes without saying travel conditions are terrible. travel is not advised during this weekend into or out of the sierra. if you have plans for the sierra, put them on hold until monday. here's the seven-day forecast, a lingering shower to one-day morning but then clearing in the afternoon, but it will be a chilly week ahead as you can see, daytime highs through the week will barely break the 50 degree mark. it will be a winter like week ahead. >> abc 7 sports with chris alvarez now.

teams will be excited to be out there and go out and play another 50 games or so and go from there. >> really good perspective from the coach there. there's a lot of season left but this will be a lot of fun on abc tonight. shifting gears to college football, stanford hired troy taylor to be the next head coach, taking over to -- over for david shaw. taylor becomes a 35th head coach in program history who recently led sacramento state to a 30 and eight mark in four seasons and the fcs quarterfinals for the first time in school history. his hornets were dominant offensively in fcs play unfinished in the top 10 nationally, scoring offense, total offense, and rushing offense. stanford needs help on both sides of the ball. he wasn't quarterback in the late 80's and was the bear all-time leading caster until jared goff, the coaches
