flashing lights mean move over. which has been lit up all day long. the rain just keeps rolling on through soaking the bay area through and through. good evening and thank you for joining us. i'm dion lim. this storm is a level two on our exclude -- exclusive storm impact scale. it has felt like it all day long. you've been watching it and let's talk about the timing for tomorrow. spencer: we've got interesting weather popping up right now. heavy rain pushing onto the peninsula as you can see right now. let's go up north to the sonoma county coastline where we've got some thunderstorm activity.

we talked about the possibility of thunder with the instability in the atmosphere. it's we just have downgraded the storm now to a level one. i couldn't notify you because it just happened a few seconds ago. it's been a level two all day. just now, down to a level one through tonight. we expect light rain and showers but there will be occasional downpours. the wind has died down a bit and that helps reduce the impact of the storm. minor localized flooding is still possible. notice right after midnight, a few scattered isolated powerful cells moving through. heavy downpours. scattered and isolated. that will be the pattern going into tomorrow. the computer -- complete forecast later. dion: it's been quite a day in the bay area and in the sierra as well. the rain has created a mess just about everywhere. in the mountains, white out conditions.

anser hassan joins us live from the newsroom with more. hope you stay drive. reporter: i was lucky i did. round two of the storm will be with us through monday. the western united states is badly in need of rain. the wind brought its own set of challenges. ♪ even with the threat of rai the boat show must go on. >> trying to make the most of it. i don't know if it will start raining anytime soon. we will have fun with it anyway. reporter: among those who came out for the 35th annual boat parade. >> last year, we got lucky. it didn't rain. it was cold. most folks still decided to come out. reporter: the first round of this weekend's storm came in early and hit hard. rains and powerful wind caused highway spinouts, down power lines across the bay area. it's the third storm of the month.

and won't be enough to impact the current drought but fire officials say the wet winter does help with dry fuels. >> we live and die by what we call fuel moisture content. that's just like it sounds. how wet the fuels are out there on the ground. reporter: storms brought heavy snow and white out conditions to the tahoe area, closing portions of interstate 80 and highway 50. >> anywhere from 103 to about 110. reporter: kevin cooper says the storm also brought the threat of avalanches near some resorts. there was 12 to six inches of snow at the lake level but he says close to 16 inches at higher elevation. he believes the snow quality is setting up for a strong kick -- ski season. >> this is the perfect base that we have going in. reporter: water experts have noted that last year, california

saw big storms in october and december followed by of the driest january, february, march ever recorded. the longer term forecast predicts another dry winter. abc7news. dion: soak up the water while we can. thanks. let's take a live look a tahoe. trust us, this is indeed zephyr cove. you can't see too much. it might look tomorrow because of the winter storm warning that's in effect until monday morning. caltrans doesn't recommend travel to the sierra today through the rest of the weekend. a winter storm warning will stay in place until monday. people still planning to drive can expect chain controls, road closures, and delays. highway 80 is closed both directions. chp urges travelers to drive prepared and bring extra supplies. this storm dumped so much rain in the north bay that the

national weather service issued to flood advisories. it wasn't just the rain and winds that cause the problems. here's cornell barnard. reporter: the storm was bringing fierce heavy rains. driving was treacherous on highway 101 in san rafael. there was street nearby pickle weed inlet overflowed into this soccer field. then there was the wind. >> the fire department came. they are the ones that put up the yellow barrier. reporter: this neighbor showed us this giant live oaktree which toppled onto wickham drive saturday morning, bringing a power pole down with it. electricity was knocked out to several homes. luckily nobody was hurt. >> this storm was unusual. i've been here 45 years. this is not something that is usual. reporter: four homes were damaged when several trees fell

during the storm. a limb tearing a hole in the roof of the house where cynthia cook from pacifica was staying. >> we know it was a tree limb somewhere. we were grateful for being inside and not out by and trying to stay safe, enjoying the weather but this was a little bit much. more than we anticipated. >> we have had several gout -- years of drought and the trees were dry. they are starting to topple over. reporter: check out this huge traffic mess. one lane of northbound 101 was flooded during the heavy rains. this fallen tree was blocking the smart train tracks in santa rosa before firefighters removed it. >> giving back to the community is delightful. reporter: the storm didn't stop workers at the redwood empire food bag from keeping their holiday food drive going in santa rosa. >> you don't even need to get out of your car. you can just arrive and we've got our elves on site to take the food from you. reporter: crews were busy

responding to street flooding across the north bay. the rain is still not over yet. if you are driving, be safe. abc7news. reporter: near woods reopen tomorrow during their normal hours. the park was closed due to the storm which came in with some high wind. the golden gate national recreation area says all reservations for today will be on about eckley refunded. there have been no reports of damages at this time. let's take a live look at san francisco international airport right now. you can see there are definitely slick along the tarmac. the bay area's biggest airports had a few hiccups caused by the wet weather. sfo reported more than 300 flight delays but just eight canceled flights today. the average flight delay at oakland airport was 27 minutes while san jose reported just two delays. down to the south bay, the storm hit hardest later on. tara campbell was in san jose

where the rain was not going to put a damper on holiday shopping. reporter: people packing into parking lots and popping open umbrellas. saturday's storm, no match for holiday shoppers at santana row in san jose. >> we just put on jackets. that's pretty much it. put on jackets and grab hoodies and grab umbrellas. it's not stopping us. reporter: how was the traffic getting up here? >> not that bad. i'm sure it's going to be bad right now. people don't know how to drive in the rain. reporter: the rain hitting south bay highways hard, cars off the road. passing multiple accidents onto lady alone. none of it enough to stop stephen rainmakers and his family from making the trip from fremont. did you hesitate to get out here? >> not at all. we planned on coming out here today. it's my son's 27th birthday.

dion: a soggy saturday in the bay area. doppler seven has been busy since early this morning. we continue tracking the rain as it pushes through. spencer has another look at your forecast in just a few minutes. don't go away. a street in oakland was dedicated to two short. the mayor unveiled the sign one of the city's main streets. a ceremony followed at the rapper's former high school, fremont high school. the mayor declared today as two short day. he was recognized for his contributions and legacy in the city's community. other hip-hop icons ice cube attended the event as well. this celebration comes during the 35th anniversary of two short's debut studio album. the rain wasn't enough to stop

an event that takes dozens of handguns and assault weapons off the streets. the organization hosted its 10th annual gun buyback program this morning in san francisco. each for each handgun turned and and 200 for assault weapons. no questions asked. >> every gun off of the street is a life saved. that's what it comes down to. that's what it wraps -- represents for a community that has high violence throughout the whole san francisco. if we can get one going off the street, that's one life saved. that's what we stand for. dion: at least 140 guns were collected at today's event and handed over to san francisco police area dozens of volunteers braved the rain today to highlight oakland's commitment to city service. the mayor was among those doing the hands-on work as part of community climate action day. volunteers pitched into plant trees and join in wildfire

[laughter] you are still so quick at this late hour of the night. spencer: we had quite a bit of rain today. dion: that's an understatement. spencer: rainfall totals across the bay area, from an inch to two inches. that's a lot of rain and it is still falling. you can see it's pretty wet. let's take a look up in the north bay on the sonoma county course -- line. lightning bolts there. there was a thunderstorm there. obviously quite a bit of rain spread across the entire region. mainly light rain. heavy rain down to the south of half moon bay, moving on shore right now, down to the south bay. quite a bit of rain coming our way. here's a live view from our exploratorium camera, looking back at clouds over san francisco.

more strong cells will bring heavy downpours. those will be widely scattered and isolated. there will be heavy downpours, more rain adding to the potential for low-lying flooding. tomorrow afternoon, another few scattered cells moving on shore, bringing scattered downpours. after that, the storm starts to weaken significantly. i talked about the one to two inches or more of rain that we had today. we expect an additional total from tomorrow's rain going into monday morning. up to 8/10 at concord. over a quarter of an inch in hayward. more wet weather to come. those totals will continue to grow. overnight lows in the mid 40's. highs tomorrow in the mid-50's. not much of a range of temperatures. snow continues to fall in the sierra. winter storm warning in effect until monday. two to five inches of snow generally. gusts of winds up to 60 miles per hour.

dion: one of the most beloved bay area ball crawls his back from the holiday. these are just some of the hundreds that came out. you can see the festivities and crispy tacos in san francisco. santa con it is more than just a festive reason to are hot. this also includes a toy drive to benefit the san francisco fire department toy program. dig deep half-staff --

what they like to call else, use funds they raised to buy the items. elves who collected $500 or more were able to participate and brought the kids along to help pick out the toys. the organization raised nearly $100,000 this year. toys will go to the salvation army's toy distribution on the 20th through the 21st. it is the season for giving, and nonprofits that collect toys say they are short thousands of gifts this year. suzanne checked in with organizations and has more on how you can help. >> this is a huge impact. reporter: in this friday in danville, the spirit of giving is alive and well. danville police had the fill the cruiser drive at the mobile cosco. all the gifts support the toys for tots organization. >> last year we filled up a 40 foot truck with toys.

last week, the marines brought a van. reporter: some offices have donations. other businesses may have a giving tree. there are plenty of wishes to be fulfilled, but this year, it is not enough donations. >> we are seeing a real decline in donations, because i think people have been laid off and people are afraid because of the economy right now. reporter: jennifer is the ceo of the family giving tree, saying donations are down this year. she says this year's goal is to collect 40,000 toys. right now, they are short for 1000. >> because of the pandemic, people aren't at work. there are much fewer people to look at these. >> we see a shortage. reporter: toys for tots also needs her help. >> i think we need at minimum, 4000 more toys. we need to collect toys no later than the 14th of december.
