>> building a better bay area, moving forward, finding solutions, this is abc 7 news. liz: we are waking up to wet roads in downed trees after rain poured down on the bay area. >> the storm was unusual, i've been here 45 years. this is not something -- liz: what to expect as we take a closer look at the damage left behind. good morning, i am liz kreutz with lisa argen. hopefully or snuggle up warm and dry, it is wet out there. lisa: we are down to a level 1 system on the abc 7 storm impact scale, there are good downpours and local snow levels allowing for accumulating snow on mount hamilton, mount diablo. boulevard back toward piedmont. emeryville and 580.

as we get to marin county, moderate rain from san pedro road around san quentin. up to the north, a little lighter. around cloverdale, the higher elevations, some snow. into san francisco, down south through daly city through oakland, some pretty good rain. on the peninsula, the santa cruz mountains, over two inches. with the downpours today, we will have on and off morning downpours, then a break of midday. more heavy rain later on this afternoon. it is in the 40's, grabbed the umbrella, the heavier coat. we will get a break and talk about how much rain we received and how much more is to come. liz: the storm has the damage in the bay area. while we need the rain, it created quite a mess. in the mountains, they are seeing white out conditions.

what else we can expect today. ♪ reporter: even with the threat of rain, the boat show must go on. >> trying to make the most of it. do not know if it will start raining anytime soon, we will have fun anyway. reporter: he and his family came out for 35th annual boat parade. >> we got lucky, it did not rain. it was cold. seems like most folks still decided to come out. reporter: it did not rain, that was not the case for much of the day around the bay. the first round of storms came in early and hit hard. rains and powerful winds because highway spinouts, downed power lines across the bay area. it is the third storm of the month. it is not enough to impact the current drought, but fire officials say the wet winter helps with dry fuels. >> we live and die, so to speak, by what we call fuel moisture content.

that is just like it sounds, it is how wet the fuels that are out there on the ground are. reporter: as the downpour drench the bay area, storms brought heavy snow and white out conditions to the tahoe area, closing portions of i-80 and highway 50. >> anywhere from 103 to 110 miles an hour. reporter: he says the storm also brought the threat of avalanches near some resorts. there were 12 to six inches of snow at the lake level, close to 16 inches at higher elevation. he believes snow quality is setting up for a strong ski season. >> with a set up is for the holidays, this is the perfect base going in. reporter: what are experts noted last year, california had big storms in october and december, followed by the driest january, february and march ever in california history. the longer term forecasts predict another dry winter. liz: caltr

going to the sierra today through the rest of the weekend. winter storm warning will stay in place until tomorrow. people planning to drive and need to drive can expect chain controls, road closures and delays. you are looking at live pictures from up in the sierra, you can see the white out conditions. cars being stuck, people can expect delays highway 80 near the nevada state line is closed both ways. chp urges travelers to drive prepared and bring extra supplies. the storm dumped so much rain in the bay area the national weather service issued to flood advisories. it was not just the rain and wind that cause problems. reporter: t bringing fierce, heavy rains. driving was treacherous on highway 101 in san rafael. there was street flooding in mill valley and the inlet overflowed into the soccer

field. then, there was the wind. >> the yellow barrier. reporter: this neighbor showed us the giant oak tree that toppled in mill valley saturday, bringing a power pole down with it. electricity was knocked out to several homes. nobody was hurt. >> the storm was unusual, i've been here 45 years. this is not something -- reporter: four homes were damaged when several trees fell during the storm. a limb tearing a hole in the roof of the house where she was staying. >> we knew it was a tree limb somewhere, we were grateful for being inside and not outside, trying to stay safe. enjoying the weather, but this was a little much. more than anticipated. >> this is the first big storm, all the trees are dry. they are filling up with water and starting to topple over.

reporter: check out this huge traffic mess. one lane northbound one was flooded during the heavy rains. his fallen tree was blocking the smart train tracks in santa rosa before firefighters removed it. >> giving back to the community is delightful. reporter: the storm did not stop workers at the redwood empire food bank from keeping their holiday food drive going in santa rosa. >> you do not need to get out of your car. you can just arrive, we have elves on site to take the food from you. liz: taking a live look francisco international airport, the bay area biggest airports had a few hiccups caused by the weather. sfo reported more than 300 flight delays, just eight canceled flights saturday. the average flight delay at oakland airport was 27 minutes. san jose airport reported to delays. -- two delays.

thpa was closed yesterday because of the storm, which came in with high wind. the golden gate national recreation area since all reservations for yesterday will be automatically refunded. there have been no reports of damage at this time. here is currently get pg&e power outage map, there are lots of green dots on the map that indicate people have lost power. we have not seen any huge outages around the bay area, which would be marked with orange or red. if you go farther south, the south bay into santa cruz county appeared to be the most impacted. there is a red triangle at the bottom of the screen, that is around watsonville. it appears there is a large outage. sacramento power district and pg&e set about 76,000 customers were without customer -- power. you can check the forecast any time with live doppler 7 on-demand on the abc 7 bay area streaming tv app.

download now wherever you stream. breaking news this morning, a person who was walking on the san mateo hayward bridge has died after a two car crash that happened just after 11:30 last night. it happened a long eastbound highway 92. chp says one person got out of their car after the crash and was hit by another vehicle. it is unclear if the driver stated the scene. all lanes on eastbound highway 92 are now open. the cause of the crash is unknown. today, the bay area iranian community will be back on the streets, continuing their demand for justice and freedom in iran. this week, the iranian regime and outs the first execution of a 23-year-old protester -- rights organizationsayas dueroce sentenced in a speedy sham trial. this video is from a previous demonstration in october. organizers were marsh at 1:00 from the ferry building in san francisco.

rain. lisa argen is tracking it all. give us the rundown. how much more can we expect? lisa: some neighborhoods could see an inch, we are 31 degrees on top of mount diablo. some snow come in the mid 30's not hamilton. big winners in the bay area, 2.5 inches around canfield come over four inches and three inches and not hamilton. once again, the south bay and east bay, one point five inches on the peninsula. -- 1.5 inches peninsula. the pressure will drift down to the west, allowing for downpours throughout the later afternoon. walnut creek, danville, san ramon, you hear the rain coming down. highway 24, to theherculesrichma

few brea-- some wet weather. as we head to the north, lighter rain along the coast. bodega bay, you see how it is breaking up around santa rosa. cloverdale, the hills, a little bit of snow. down through san francisco and daly city, 280 and the peninsula, check it out. very rainy view. back west, highway one, santa cruz mountains getting good rain. out toward fremont, union city, the returns and accumulating snow from not hamilton. -- mount hamilton. sierra nevada looking at very heavy snow there were about 4:00 tomorrow morning, an additional nine to 17 inches for some of the resorts. above 7000 feet, one to two still likely.

candlelight vigil with other community members to hold hands and walk and remember their names and say their names. we celebrate his my other two children, this is another way i am bringing that child to life and bring memories forward. liz: he died when he was three weeks out from a terminal brain condition. he spent his final days at the children's house, the first pediatric palette of care center in the country. the vigil is tonight from 5:00 to 7:00. tomorrow, the u.n. plaza in san francisco will reduce hours and increased police patrol. theov to disrup t publicse, tthe measure comes de city's closure of the tenderloin center, which allowed supervised drug consumption services. final exams at uc berkeley began as early as tomorrow, even though some employees remain on strike.

how the strike is impacting exam preparations. reporter: continue pushing to have the uc system meet their demands. >> are raises -- base wages is a huge issue. it is unlivable. reporter: the strike is almost approaching one month. students now say the strike is disrupting their learning. >> there's been a lot of self studying and finals coming up, of course it is scary. the grades mean so much for our future. reporter: uc berkeley is set to begin final exams monday. she says her class will not be tested on the full material. >> my understanding is our final is going to not cover, or not as much, the topics we've been covering the last few weeks. reporter: grad student

instructors are going under negotiations. undergrad students at uc berkeley tell me not having them as a resource limits how they prepare for final exams. >> a lot of other students are taking really hard classes, they could have benefited from things like that. reporter: uc berkeley said in a statement the berkeley administration and academics and encourage instructors to adapt the format and scopes of their exams and final projects to take effects of strikes into account. are willing to keep striking until they see an offer or paying them what they request. >> we've been doing our best to minimize the negative impact on students while also acknowledging we have to withhold labor. that is what makes it effective. liz: d

the rain to highlight oakland's commitment to city service. the mayor was among those doing the hands-on work as part of community climate action, that was yesterday. volunteers pitched into plant trees and join in wildfire prevention activities. california volunteers, the state organization supporting the event, is investing $12 million in oakland service and civic engagement. >> you are showing you have a heart for this community, this planet, for future generations. you are showing you are willing to get your hands dirty. liz: some other climate action projects involved organic waste disposal and edible food recovery. the storm was not enough to completely shut down holiday favorite in windsor. ♪ portion of the annual out a

doppler 7 picking up on the heavier downpours. lightning and snow low -- low snow levels. danville, 680, that is snow over on mount diablo. taking you back westw kensington, east of 80. heavier rain. wet weather down to san leandro and hayward, later toward fremont and marin county. if you downpours. as we take you north, it is breaking up and there is upper elevations to know for sure on the peninsula. some moderate rain, check it out. from the summit, we picked up over four inches of rain, coming down as snow now. exclusive storm impact scale looking at a level one, temperatures are much colder, mid to upper 40's. here is a look at the timeline. we have the rain and downpours through 7:00, then we get a bit of a break. 9:00 and 10:00 through the

middle of the afternoon. by 2:00, more rain headed our way through the late afternoon and early evening, look at the line. we are going to add up the totals and talk about a dry start to the work week, coming up. liz: coast-to-coast, winter storms are moving across the country. the east coast is expected to experience the first snowfall of the season. here in the west, powerful storms already bringing heavy snow, wind and rain. reporter: back to back winter storms are impacting much of the country. the first system dropping heavy snow in parts of the west, up to five feet is expected in the sierra nevada. wind so strong in south lake tahoe, this ski lift was shut down. along the west coast, the wind whipping up the surf in santa cruz, heavy rain in sacramento. >> those powerlines m onto this car.

there was a huge power line going across the top of my car, it is probably totaled. reporter: a different system bringing more than nine inches of snow to south dakota, plow drivers working hard to clear the roads. >> they've been working for 12, sometimes 16 hour shifts. reporter: the same system impacting the northeast. >> it will explode across western new york and eventually new england. a high-impact event for much of the country and a danger stay in the south tuesday. reporter: eastern texas along with louisiana and mississippi could be hit with strong wind, large hail and possible tornadoes. liz: in the south did little to keep eager holiday shoppers away. yesterday's rain hit the sou bay highways pretty hard with cars pulled up on the side of the road and multiple accidents

on 280 alone. you can see some video, none of it enough to stop this family from making the trip from fremont. >> did you hesitate to get out here knowing her rainy it was? >> not at all, we plan on coming out here today. it is my son's 27th birthday, so we came out for mexican food and had a great day. reporter: as the rain calm down, people were piling into parking lots, determined to get christmas lists done. the turnout making business owners happy and a relief for those working to make a comeback from the pandemic. the storm impact is being felt around california. five cars were trumped by powerlines. powerlines fell down between the intersection of sunrise boulevard and florin road. highway patrol responded to the emergency and over 30,000 people lost power. one person had pieces of glass stuck inside her mouth from the powerline falling and breaking her windshield.

a driver was stuck in a ditch for over an hour. officials to do high wind from the rainstorm. there were no significant reported injuries. roads remain closed until further notice. yesterday's rain was not enough to stop an event taking dozens of handguns and assault off the streets. the organization hosted its 10th annual gun buyback in san francisco. donors get $100 for each handgun turned in, 200 dollars for each assault weapon, no questions asked. >> that is what it comes down to. represent freight community has high violence throughout the whole of san francisco. if we can get one gun off the street, that is one life saved. liz: at least 140 guns were collected and handed over to police. coming up on this week, the

locations. a privacy expert says apple could be held liable. >> there is a risk of misuse, in those cases, the manufacturer can be held liable for any anticipated misuse of the product. in this case, the product is doing what it is supposed to do, tracking where the air tag is. if you made that impossible, then the air tag would not be useful. liz: the lawsuit accuses apple of negligence, design defects and privacy violations. a spokesperson declined to comment directly. they instead pointed to a previous statement on unwanted tracking, saying it condemns the act. on tuesday, ftx founder is it to testify before a u.s. house committee as regulators look to investigate the sudden collapse of the cryptocurrency exchange platform. u.s. justice department officials met to examine whether millions of dollars were fraudulently transferred from the company before it filed for bankruptcy. the platform had ties with

several top athletes, including steph curry. on monday, a revamped version of twitter blue is making a comeback. this description will cost more. twitter says the service allows users to edit tweets, upload high-quality videos and get the verified blue check mark. elon musk confirmed plans to increase tweet character counts from 280 to 4000. it will cost eight dollars a month for subscribers on the web and $11 for ios users. the difference between the two is not clear. it is the season for giving and nonprofits say they are short thousands of gifts for needy families. we checked in with several organizations and have more on how to help. >> this is a huge impact. reporter: the spirit of giving is alive and well, people have been showing up with donated toys. danville police held a toy drive at the local costco. they all support toys for tots. >> last year, we filled up a 40

foot truck with toys. last week, the marines bought a van. we felt that up. reporter: some offices have donation bins, others have bins for the san francisco fire department. other businesses may have a giving tree. there are plenty of wishes to be fulfilled, but this year, there are not enough donations. >> we are seeing a decline, i think it is because people have been laid off, people are afraid because of the economy. reporter: she is ceo of the family giving tree, one of many organizations same donations are down the she says the goal is to collect 40,000 toys. they are short 15,000. >> because of the pandemic, people are not at work. there are fewer people. reporter: the u.s. marines say toys for tots also needs your help. >> we need, at minimum, 4000 more toys to support our community. we need to collect toys related

snow around mount diablo. it has been pouring in parts of the bay area overnight, you can see the heavier cell. highway 24 is very wet. back westward into marin, light to moderate rain. lucas valley down through mill valley, then as we get to daly city and south city, lighter rain and around the heart of the bay, down through fremont, 680 on and off showers. there is the snow. it's been snowing for a couple hours on top of mount diablo. the winter storm warning continues as we go through the next several hours. still picking up a couple feet of -- above 7000 feet, temperatures in the 20's at lake level. three inches for incline, then another 10 inches southlake. they picked up a good 46 inches at some of the resorts. with all of the wind, it's been problematic.

we are in the 40's for hayward, 52 in union city. 44 in santa rosa. low snow levels down to about 3500 feet in parts of the north bay, below 4000 eight in the south and east bay. four to five degrees colder bay. we are looking at the rainy, chilly morning. thunderstorms are possible, snow levels continue to bring snow we peaks. here is a look at the rainfall, nearly an inch, one point five inches from the peninsula, over an inch in mountain view. san martin at about 2.5 inches, over four inches around ben loman and canfield picked up 2.5, as well as mount tam. here is the plan the rest of the day, you see this body downpours. after 9:00, we get a breakthrough about 2:00 in the afternoon. notice the high clouds.
