throughout this region, one point at least 60,000 customers in california without power. some people telling me that they haven't seen rain like this in years. this morning, heavy snow piling up in northern california. as this powerful cross-country storm begins its move east. the epic storm system will be felt by most everyone in the lower 48 states as it travels the country. snow falling at more than 4 inches per hour, more than 5 feet expected in some areas. fierce winds knocking this chair lift back and forth at heavenly resort at lake tahoe. temporarily shutting it down. dangerous conditions on highways all but abandoned and rain flooding streets in sacramento, other roads blocked off by fallen utility poles. winds at over 60 miles per hour, knocking down trees. this woman was driving when power lines crashed down on. of her car. >> when it stopped i had a hole in my windshield and there was a huge power line going across the

top of my car. >> reporter: the rain raising fears of landslides, this cliffside giving way in los angeles county, a 2,000 foot chunk of rock falling to the beach below. officials concerned there could be more here and elsewhere across the state. this storm has been a three-part event. yesterday, last night and today. that rain coming down fast and hard leading to those concerns for mudslides. whit. >> zohreen, thanks. let's see where the storm is heading now with danielle breezy from our nashville affiliate, wkrn. danielle, good morning to you. >> reporter: and good morning, whit. we begin with that major storm out west that's bringing heavy rain to the coastlines. in the mountainous regions we're seeing heavy snow. we actually have now 14 states that are under wind and snow alerts, so that's a lot of

states. that's going to spread todd east and the middle of the country. wind gusts of 40, not to mention possible whiteout conditions, even blizzard conditions out there. wednesday morning, we could see 1 to 2 feet of snow, and then we're also watching the warmer could see severe weather in the deep south from new orleans to little rock, damaging winds and tornadoes. that's all possible. back to you, eva. now to the major pipeline spill in kansas, the largest spill on land in nearly a decade. abc's em nguyen joins us with more on the cleanup. good morning, em. >> reporter: good morning, eva. officials on the ground tell us it's a busy site with increased work forces, including remediation crews. this morning, an urgent federal investigation is under way into a keystone pipeline rupture that

spilled nearly 600,000 gallons of oil into a kansas creek on wednesday. emergency crews scrambling to clean up what's the nation's largest on-land spill in nearly a decade. the pipeline was forced to shut down, sparking new concerns about higher gas prices. >> we certainly could see an exponential increase on the effect of gas prices if the pipeline remains down for more than a week. >> reporter: officials on site say it's not clear when the line will restart. >> i think they're still trying to assess what all the damages are and the implications. >> reporter: transportation secretary pete buttigieg saying his agency is closely monitoring and investigating the keytone pipeline leak. this spill raising questions from environmentalists about whether the pipeline operator should keep a federal permit that allowed the pressure inside parts of the keystone system to exceed permitted levels. >> what high pressure does to a pipeline it really finds the weakest point and will, if it's

high enough, can rupture from that point, but there are a lot of other potential causes for a pipeline to fail. >> as investigators continue looking into what caused this leak environmentalists are urging congress to pass stronger regulations on pipelines. whit. >> em, our thanks to you this morning. now to brittney griner, the wnba star finally reunited with her wife who's giving thanks to all of those who had a hand in the prisoner exchange deal that led to griner's release from a russian penal colony. abc's faith abubey is in san antonio, texas, with the latest. faith, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, whit. this is the first time we're hearing from the griner family since the wnba star and her wife reunited here in san antonio, texas, after nearly ten months apart. griner's wife cherelle is personally thanking the collective efforts of so many people who she says have now made her heart whole again. posting on instagram, quote, i'm humbled by their hearts to care for another, a stranger to some, a friend to some, humanity in its purest form.

as b.g. and i start our journey to heal our minds, body and spirits, i wanted to personally say thank you to some of the hands -- seen and unseen -- that helped make it possible for me to see my wife again. cherelle perhaps griner's biggest advocate while she was detained in russia, putting prsu on the bide to bring the wnba star home. we're waiting for an update on when griner will leave this medical facility here and see the rest of her family and friends. she was brought here on friday for a full medical checkup including a mental health evaluation. in the meantime, new public comments from viktor bout, the convicted arms dealer, he describes to russian broadcaster rt this moment when he walked past the wnba star on the tarmac, saying, quote, i wished her luck. with bout no longer part of the equation, there are questions about when the u.s. could offer russia to release former marine paul whelan.

abc's elizabeth schulze is here with us. good morning, elizabeth. >> reporter: good morning, janai. grant wahl was a prominent reporter and writer who helped introduce americans to some of soccer's biggest stars. after his sudden death this weekend, friends and family and readers and listeners around the world are still in shock. >> the world cup continues today without one of the sport's best voices and biggest advocates, grant wahl. >> reporter: this morning, tributes pouring in for renowned sports journalist grant wahl, wahl, who was covering his eighth world cup died friday after collapsing in his seat in the press area during the argentina/netherlands quarterfinal. medics performing cpr and then rushing wahl to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. just a day before wahl telling listeners on his podcast he had bronchitis, but that he was feeling better. >> i can't wait to be on the other side of what i have. >> reporter: a passionate supporter of soccer, he also an

and a major blow for the key black seaport city of odesa. russian drone attacks cutting almost all of the electricity to the city. ines de la cuetara is in kyiv with more. good morning, ines. >> reporter: good morning, eva. new air raid sirens going off here in kyiv this morning. as new drone strikes on critical infrastructure in the port city of odesa leave over 1.5 million people without power. ukrainian president zelenskyy addressing the attack last night calling it a very difficult situation and saying it could be days before residents get their power back. local officials meanwhile saying it could take months to fully repair. this is of course just the latest example of russia's strategy to weaponize winter here. putin once again vowed to target ukraine's energy grid. the goal here to make everyday

ukrainians' lives to make it as miserable as possible. on the ground, ukrainians we're speaking with are undeterred and they tell us time and time again that they're willing to power through winter. this is also an example of russia relying on foreign countries for weapons, we know that these drones that targeted odesa were from iran. these 50 drones were fired. ten of them shot down. this comes as russia looks to replenish its arsenal. the uk's defense ministry saying that iran has emerged as one of russia's top military backers. that relationship and support is likely to ramp up in the coming months. whit? >> another major concern this morning, ines, thank you. now to the mystery over an american college student who's been missing for two weeks while studying in france. his parents said he remained in constant contact until his disappearance. now they're pleading for help. abc's lama hasan is in london with more. lama, good morning. >> reporter: yeah, good morning to you, whit. it is every parent's worst nightmare.

kenny deland's last contact with his parents on november 27th. they haven't heard from him since. they're desperately trying to find him. this morning, a mystery deepening as the parents of missing american college student kenny deland are desperate to find him. >> i'm thinking this can't be possible. how did he go missing? what happened? >> reporter: the 22-year-old, a senior at st. john fisher university in new york, was on a study abroad program in southeastern france. due to return home next week, but in late november, mom carol received a call from a college liaison. >> she had filed a missing person report because they hadn't seen him in 24 hours. >> reporter: the family is in shock as they had been in constant contact with their son. he said he was enjoying his time abroad. >> he loves to travel, so this trip has been something that he's really looked forward to, and it's not characteristic of kenny to not reach out to us and let us know what's going on. >> reporter: the last time

parents heard from their son was on november 27th. according to family, he boarded pa train and headed south, his phone pinging along the way, on december 3rd he was tracked to this sports store, seen here wearing a red jacket and gray hat, spending $9. >> it would be extremely important to understand who he has talked to, maybe in his age group in france, or maybe he's talked to people back here in the united states, on the phone. >> reporter: french authorities are investigating and say it's a worrying disappearance but citing privacy laws as kenny is an adult. his loved ones just want answers. >> if anybody has a way to help us and find him, help us. with the officials, please help us. >> reporter: now, as french authorities investigate kenny deland's disappearance, his parents have taken matters into their own hands launching a website, asking for the public's help hoping they can find him and bring him home for christmas. janai.

robinson was just 25 years old. eva. now to inflation and another big week ahead as the federal reserve considers raising interest rates again in an effort to get prices down. abc's deirdre bolton joins us with more. good morning, deirdre. >> reporter: good morning, eva. this is a big week and it's been a big year for the fed, it has raised rates for the past six consecutive meetings and by the most aggressive amount since the 1980s. there's more to come this week. so many say the fed is achieving its goal of lowering inflation in certain areas. the red-hot housing market cooling off. the fed moves a big part of mortgage rates rising. now, overall inflation is coming down s shopping will tell you those prices are only raising less fast. eggs still 43% higher than they were this time last year. butter, margarine, still up more than 33% compared to this time

with here more. good morning, mona. >> reporter: eva, good morning. parents alleged that the game severely impacted their children's behavior claiming they stopped drinking, eating and even showering. epic games say they're ready to fight those claims in court. this morning, the makers of the wildly popular video game fortnite facing a new lawsuit. that newly authorized class action lawsuit, filed on behalf of parents in canada, say they designed fortnite to create a dependency in users. they failed to provide warnings of the risks associated with play. the online video game has more than 250 million registered users worldwide. this boston mom says she noticed her 12-year-old and 13-year-old sons became obsessed almost instantly. >> they were coming home from school and they didn't want to go outside and play basketball, they didn't want to go and physically hang out with their friends. >> reporter: the world health organization has categorized video game addiction as a mental
