building a better bay area moving word finding solutions. this is abc 7 news. here 45 years. so this is not something that is frequent. what to expect today as we take a closer look at the damage left behind from saturday's storm. good morning everybody at sunday december 11th. i'm loose kroitz here with meteorologist lisa arjun we are continuing to track the storm coverage today no longer a level two storm now a level one more rain on the way though. yeah. that's right liz. it's gonna pick up later on this afternoon. we're gonna get into a little low in the next hour or so, but right now there are still rain

showers. in fact, we had a couple lightning strikes on the peninsula. we're going to go in closer here around woodside 280 and the rain is light to moderate down through los altos hills across the bay the san mateo bridge the dumbarton bridge wet and milpitas 880. it's been a soggy morning view. you can see more showers off sure there heading into highway one and it has been snow around mount hamilton as a snow levels have dip below 4,000 feet level one system as liz said and the scattered thunderstorms are a possibility today with those pores it's gonna pick up mid-afternoon today. i look outside. you can see some sun here 48 in oakland montana little breezy on top there 47 in concord, and that keeps our temperatures cooler and it's a little bit breezy but no advisories for you 12 degrees cooler this morning and livermore and we are looking at the possibility of those thunderstorms picking up from

about two clock this afternoon right through the evening liz. all right lisa. thank you. the storm has left some damage in the bay area and in the sierra as well and while we certainly need the rain it has created a mess out there in the mountains. they're seeing whiteout conditions abc 7 news reporter on sir hassan tells us what else we can expect today. listen to what i say. he threat of rain the boat show must go on. trying to make the most start raining anytime soon, but we'll have fun. anyway, richard gillian and his family were among those who came out for the 35th. annual sausalito delighted boat parade last year, though. we got lucky and it didn't rain. it was cold but not raining, but it seems like most folks still decided. come on now it didn't rain, but that wasn't the case for much of of the day around the bay. the first round of this week in storm came in early and hit hard rain's and powerful winds caused highway spinouts brought down power lines across the bay area. it's the third storm of the month. it won't be enough to impact the

current route but fire officials say the wet winter does help with the dry fuels we live and die so to speak by what we call fuel moisture content. and that is just like it sounds it's how wet the fuels that are out there on theund are as the downpour drench the bay area storms brought heavy snow and whiteout conditions to the tahoe area closing portions of interstate 80 and highway 50. we saw blast across the ridge tops anywhere from a hundred and three to about a hundred and ten miles an hour kevin cooper's a tahoe area travel expert. he says the storm also brought the threat of avalanches near some resorts. there was 12 to 6 inches of snow at the lake level, but he says close to 16 inches at higher elevation. he believes the snow quality is setting up for a strong ski season, but for what the setup is for the holidays, this is the perfect base that we have going in now water experts have noted that last year, california had big storms in october in

december followed by the driest january february in march ever in california history and longer term forecasts predict another dry winter in the newsroom on sarasan abc 7. shoes the saturday storm dumped so much rain in the north bay the national weather service issued two flood advisories, and it wasn't just the rain in the wind that caused problems. here's abc 7 news reporter cornell bernard. the storm was intense b fierce heavy rains driving was treacherous on highway 101 in san rafael. there was street flooding. mill valley and nearby pickle weed inlet overflowed into the soccer field and then there was the wind first. the fire department came. they're the ones that put up the yellow. barrier there neighbor jeff gilliam showed us this giant live oak tree which toppled onto wickham drive in mill valley saturday morning bringing a power pole down with it. electricity was knocked out to

several homes. luckily. nobody was hurt. the storm was unusual and i've been here 45 years. so this is is were damaged when several trees fell during the storm a limb tearing a hole in the roof of the house. where cynthia cook for pacifica was staying. oh he knew it was a child somewhere water being inside and not outside and trying to stay safe. enjoying the weather but this was a more we antipatigto we'veer yrs of trees pe wernd to top it open in novato. check out this huge traffic mess one lane up northbound 101 was flooded during the heavy rains and this fallen tree was blocking the smart train tracks in santa rosa before firefighters removed it. is grateful but giving back to the community is certainly delightful the storm didn't stop workers at the redwood empire

food bank from keeping their holiday food drive going in santa rosa. you don't even need to get out of your car. you can just arrive and we've got our elves on site to take the food from you and marin county cornell bernard abc 7 news. and taking a live look at san francisco international airport. the bay area's biggest airports. had a few hiccups caused by the weather sfo reported more than 300 flight delays, but just eight canceled flights on saturday the average flight delay at oakland airport was 27 minutes while san jose airport reported to delays muir woods national monument says, it hopes to reopen today during its normal hours. the park was closed saturday because of the storm which came in with some high winds the golden gate national recreation. area says all reservations for yesterday will be automatically refunded there have been no reports of damage at this time. and here's a current look at pg&e's power outage map. there are lots of green dots which indicate people have lost their electricity.

we haven't seen too many huge outages which are marked by either orange or red indicators. although we are starting to see a few more you can see one down on the peninsula. there's a pocket of red with a lot of outages there and down near watsonville in the south bay the south bay and santa cruz county also appear to be some of the areas that have been most impacted by these outages you can check the forecast anytime and get live doppler 7 on demand on our abc 7 bay area streaming tv app download the app now it's available wherever you stream developing news this morning now meantime a person who was walking on the san mateo hayward bridge has died after a two-car crash that happened just after 11:30 last night. it happened along eastbound highway 92. chp says one person got out of their car after the crash and then was hit by another vehicle. it's unclear if the driver of that car stayed on the scene all lanes on highway 92 eastbound have now reopened the cause of the crash is unknown.

developing news out of milwaukee, wisconsin legendary singer patti, labelle was rushed off the stage mid-show because of a bomb threat late last night concert organizers have postponed the show for now. they're trying to reschedule. you can see this video here security escorts. her off the stage police say attendees at this concert. the patti labelle concert were safely evacuated after the bomb threat was made. i was having a good time at the patti labelle concert from our birthday all of a sudden a restaurant off the stage and they said it was a threat and we all had to get out and it's a shame that you could not enjoy yourself and have fun. milwaukee police say the investigation is ongoing also developing news a libyan mann suspected of engineering the bomb that destroyed pan am flight 103 over the town of lockerby scotland in 1988 is now in us custody the us announced charges against abu aguila mohamed masood. for his role in the bombing two

once you have a child you always have that child whether they're with you in in physical or not and the way that you can continue to hold on to the memories of those children is to remember them through different types of legacy experiences. one of which is a candlelight visual with other community members to hold hands and walk and to remember those children name and to say their name. we talk about lars a lot with my two children now, we celebrate his birthday every year and this is another way of just bringing that child to life and to bring the memories forward. lars died when he was just three weeks old from a terminal brain condition. he spent his final days at george mark children's house, which is the first pediatric palette of care center in the country the vigil at the children's house is tonight from five to seven happening tomorrow the un plaza in san francisco will reduce its hours and increase its police patrol according to the examiner. the move is to disrupt the areas public drug use theft and

semester final exams on monday and a magnetic says her class won't be tested on the full material my understanding. is that our final for the class is going to not cover or at least not as much the topics that we've been covering the last few weeks grad student instructors are one of the groups undergoing labor negotiations with the uc system and undergraduate students. tell me here at uc berkeley not having them as a resource limits how they prepare for final exams. i know that a lot ofudentsre rey hard classes and they could probably have benefited from the office hours health and things like that uc berkeley said in a statement the berkeley administration and the academic senate have encouraged instructors to adapt the format in scope of their exams and other final projects to take the effects of the strike into account faculty are advised to identify and focus on one or two top learning outcomes for course and focus on those in their class time and in assessments, mac says she and other workers are willing to keep striking so

yesterday? yeah. it really was we picked up some pretty good totals all around the bay area and we still have the center of the system offshore that will be providing some heavier downpours later on this afternoon with a chance of thunderstorms. you saw a few lightning strikes on the peninsula and we are still looking at a very active live doppler 7 across the state. so if you can make out that circulation offshore, that's the unstable air and we still have the showers. we're going in closer here and to parts of the east bay. we are in union city skylark drive, you can see the activity from 880 whipple road and jarvis avenue the weather taking you westward into redwood city, atherton menlo park in bay road. you've got some showers and down around the south bay mission college boulevard to benton street in santa clara it is wet right now and offshore you can see the showers beginning to push into the highway. one area half moon bay and montara and then we've had snow not only mount hamilton mount

saint helena looking at a few flakes around mount diablo temperature right now is 30 degrees on top of mount hamilton and our winter storm warning through four o'clock tomorrow morning in the nevada, and the ski resorts can pick up a little bit more snow. we're talking maybe a couple of inches around incline. it's still coming down and five inches, don or maybe 10 inches by kirkwood three and four feet were. and around sugar bowl palisades, and they are just trying to dig out right now. there's a look at some sun and breezy winds above our sutro tower camera. it is 46 chilly downtown forty eight in oakland mid 40s, palo alto, san jose santa clara and 50 at the coast and some sun here in emeryville more rain. i should say exploratorium camera more rain will be on the way later on today 44 santa rosa 45 for fairfield and livermore and some blue sky here from the golden gate bridge. so spotty rain showers this morning possible thunderstorms this afternoon and looking at that to continue through teveni.

it's the season for giving a nonprofits that collect toys so vel organizations and hasof t yy more on how you can help. this is is a huge impact. spirit of giving is alive and well people have been showing up with donated toys. it's been amazing danville police held their fill the cruiser drive at the local costco all the gifts support the toys for tots organization last year. we filled up a 40 foot truck with toys last week the marines brought a van. we filled that up some offices have donation bins for toys for tots others have donation bins for the san francisco fire department other businesses may have a giving tree there are plenty ofishes to be fulfilled. but this year there's not enough donations seeing a real decline in donations, and i think it's because people aren't in the office and people have been laid off and people are afraid because of the economy right now jennifer columbine is ceo of the

family giving tree one of many organizations saying donations are down this year. she says this year's goal is to collect 40,000 toys right now. they're short 15,000 because of the pandemic people. at work and so there's much fewer people to look at these wish cards. we see a shortage every year the us marines say toys for tots also need your help. i think we need at minimum 4,000 more toys to support our community. we need to collect ways no later than 14 december another group. hoping to make the difference with your toy donation is the san francisco fire department. this donation box is empty right now, but that's because they just did a pickup yesterday san francisco firefighters. you to know they have donation bins at firehouses the city of san francisco, san francisco fire department the family giving tree toys for tots. they all hope to have final donations in within the next few days so they can deliver the gifts on time to kids who really need them seeing the smile and a
