40's, breeze gusting 10 to 20 degrees cooler. showing you the flags on the piers. there moving underneath that breeze. here's how the day shapes up. any moisture in cloud cover will get out of here pretty quickly. temperatures in the 50's, it freeze warning right not. kumasi: -- jobina: following for the last hour now a rockslide in sausalito that is blocking the freeway entirely on southbound 101 past rodeo avenue. traffic is being diverted. it does not cilic injuries are involved, but we have not been given an estimated time from the chp one all lanes will reopen. this will have a major impact on the commute as you travel southbound on 101 this area. you cannot get the sausalito this area -- this way. lena howland is in route and she will give us a live report in about an hour or so. kumasi: the winter storms sweeping through the bay area

brought some snow overnight to local communities. it is also causing trouble on local roadways. in holland is on the roads this morning. how is it looking out there now? lena: good morning. pretty clear on the roadways coming from the east bay. we are in the car rig npretty c. we did see a little moisture earlier this morning, but right now. late last night, we did see a light dusting of snow in the foothills of livermore. take a look. this is video of snow falling taken in the hills south of livermore on san antonio road last night. snow was still falling right around 10:00 last night with much more further up on the mountain. while this did not there the wrench into a plans of too many

drivers in east bay, we talked one woman who got stuck in some much thicker snow heading back to clear lake from santa rosa late last night. >> we were really scared hopefully, we make it to where we are supposed to be going. on our way down, we saw several cars that got into accidents. yeah, it was bad. lena: she said she offguard by the snow in her toyota corolla. she had to wait almost two hours for a tow truck to help get her out, along with a dozen other cars that also slipped off the road. still an incredibly iorta reminder to slow down. livermore, lena howland, abc 7 news. reggie: the storm brought white out conditions in the sierra, with multiples feet of snow

toward where lake tahoe has been slow going. traffic has been stopped at various times for snow and ice removal. chain restrictions are in effect for both major passes. some of the tahoe area ski resorts have to close their lifts when high winds made them unsafe. you can see the chairs swinging in the wind. parts of lake county saw healthy dusting of snow. there was enough snow sticking to the road that plows had to be called in. icy conditions made driving a bit treacherous in the area. snow also fell in anderson springs and some other higher elevations in the area. make sure you're prepared for when weather hits with alerts like this one. the accuweather forecast targeted right down to yr neighborhood. just be sure to enable push notifications. kumasi: the man accused of putting a bomb on pan am 103 over scotland 34 years ago is now in u.s. custody. jobina is at the live desk with

soon as today. reggie: happening today, the former alameda sheriff's deputy accused of murder will face a judge. he is expected to enter a plea today he is accused of shooting and killing a couple in dublin in september. documents show he had a previous romantic relationship with one of the victims. police that he went to the home in the middle of the night and shot the couple. authorities in fresno county eventually arrested him 11 hours later. kumasi: some postdoctoral students and researchers at uc system schools will be returning to work today. however, thousands of other workers are still on strike, as finals start. many of those workers went on strike weeks ago. on friday, there was a tentative agreement to boost salaries and secure additional benefits, including more days of paid family leave for the postdoc and research workers. the grad students who teach classes and aside grades -- assign grades will continue striking pair it's still ahead, how long experts believe the volcano in hawaii will continue erupting. reggie: and oil spill in midwest

kumasi: buckham back. an outstanding community member from oakland helping the homeless is now at risk of losing housing herself. every sunday since 2021, sharon alexander in a group of volunteers served fresh to food to the homeless in the east bay. having been homeless herself, she has decided to give back. but now, she is in an unstable position again. >> until the end of january to find summer to go. the agency she has contacted tell her they are all full peer chi cannot rent right now because she cannot afford a place. we know how the bay area is.

so, she is still keeping up with feeding her community, saying it gives her motivation to keep herself from becoming on house. reggie: their questions this morning about what sparked this huge fire at the port of oakland . eight big rig trucks went up in flames yesterday morning. the smoke was visible throughout the area starting around 8 a.m.. firefighters say the firefighter -- the fire was coming from the cabs. everything was under control and about a half-hour and no one was hurt. kumasi: the new mayor of los angeles is getting right to work. vice president kamala harris swore in the new mayor yesterday. she says that at the top of her agenda is building 15,000 new homes by the end of next year. she said her first act as mayor will be to declare a state of emergency on homelessness. in the city of los angeles, officials most recently counted nearly 42000 and housed people. and l.a. city councilman is caught on camera getting into a

fight with an activist. kevin de leon appears to push a local organizer during a meeting over the weekend. he is under fire in the county because of leaked audio earlier this year of he and another councilmember picking racist comments about a colleagues black child. those comments caused the city council to resign. in a statement, he says he was simply defending himself. reggie: two isis members have been killed in a helicopter raid in syria. according to u.s. central command, at least one of those who died was involved in plotting attacks for the terror group. no civilians were hurt or killed in the raid. a security official says isis, despite losing much of its territory, still remains a threat. today, commissioners in kansas are meeting with keystone pipeline representatives to discuss what's next after and oil spill. that still shut down the keystone pipeline, which is likely to cause gas prices to increase. depending on how long it takes

to repair, it could raise prices up to $.30 to $.40 in some places. that pipeline carries oil from canada to the texas gulf coast. it is unclear how the spill occurred, but it consisted of about 14,000 barrels. environment lists are concerned it could pollute waterways. kumasi: as we wait to see how that will impact gas prices, they're dropping nationwide and the bay area. the price of regular unleaded here in california is down to about $4.55. if you are filling up in the bay area, it is about $.10 more than average. we did find gas for $3.19 in concord. the national average now is about $3.26. all of these are down from last year. reggie: the u.s. geological survey from hawaii's volcano could end soon. that statement comes as officials downgraded the volcano alert from a warning to a watch over the weekend. officials say lava output and gas admissions have greatly slowed over the past few days. it is no longer a threat.

it started erupting first on december 20 7 -- genuine 27. kumasi: grizzly started to squeeze through a doggy door of a family's home. they woke up to the dog barking anyway they had never heard before. the bears were rummaging through the kitchen. they ate the dog food, fruit, some granola. for families say they came back for breakfast over the next few days. but they have been caught and relocated. look how they are going in. don't they look thick? and they still made it through. reggie: yeah, that one bear is pretty big. kumasi: they made it. they figured it out. reggie: i don't know why, i just always refer these bears. there something cute about that to me. i know that if i were inside -- are you telling me that they are got in? drew: yeah.

we are getting rid of the clouds today. we had a little bit of drizzle this morning. chile sent in later today, then some very cold mornings. rainfall totals this past weekend from san jose and san francisco, one to two inches of rain. the santa cruz mountains, half a foot of rain over the past 40 hours. i've doppler seven, some pockets of drizzle. no downpours. this storm system is exiting as we speak. future weather, any cloud cover we do have quickly get out of here. we are expecting a lot of sunshine today. temperatures are maxing out in the low end at the 50's for afternoon highs. a bit below average for this kind of fear -- time of year. you will need sunglasses, as sunshine is in full effect. overnight tonight, clear skies, cold out there, widespread 30's, if not subfreezing in the north. a freeze warning starting tomorrow morning at 1 a.m.

is that the crew to remove the rocks has arrived. we will let you know when this starts having out of there. reggie: thank you. winter weather hitting parts of one country. anglin got a blanket of snow. you can see the cars covered in this video. icy roads made for dangerous driving conditions on sunday. right now, the national weather service has issued a freeze warning in effect that does until 9 a.m. tomorrow. people in the north they are cleaning up after that big mess left by the weekend storm early sunday morning. a giant oak tree fell into a car on eleanor avenue. the tree came down on this suv. no estimate yet on what the damages. the car owner saying it is hopefully minimal, suspecting the tree fell slowly, without any dramatic impact. rain persisted through the weekend through much of the north. the weather service issued two separate advisories. flooding blocked off several

roadways, overwhelming some residential streets. inmate highway 101 nearly possible to drive on saturday, with heavy traffic and one lang close. you are likely to see some slippery conditions for some of you, you might even see ice and snow. lena howland is driving around this morning. what are you seeing? lena: good morning. so far, we are seeing stay little bit of early morning showers in the san leandro area. we are driving on 580 heading westbound toward san francisco and the san leandro area. over in livermore, that is where we saw some light showers and some snow last night. take a look. this is video of snow falling that was taken in the hills south of livermore on san antonio valley road last night. snow is still falling right around 10:00, with much more not pictured further up on the mountain. but over in the north bay, it

was much more of a dramatic scene. we talked to one driver who got stuck in much thicker snow heading back to clear lake from santa rosa late last night. >> i think it probably helped most of the cars he helped us get out. he put a rope underneath the car and helped us get out. we got stuck twice. we tried to move forward, but we got stuck again. lena: she said she had to wait almost two hours for a tow truck to help get her out, along with more than one dozen other cars that also slipped off the road. still an incredibly important reminder for all drivers to use some extra caution and be mindful of other drivers out on the roadways any time you see that moisture out on the roads. for now, we are going to toss it back over to you guys. kumasi: thank you. thunderstorms are hitting both coasts this morning. this year is getting heavy snowfall.

on the east coast, freezing rain and snow are impacting the morning commute. meanwhile, parts of the midwest and the south are facing the possibility of tornadoes. here's abc news reporter morgan norwood. reporter: overnight, two major storms causing problems from coast-to-coast. in the northeast, the first steady snowfall of the season causing multiple crashes in massachusetts. police restricting speeds on parts of i 90. at least seven cars involved in one crash, one serious injury reported. areas north of new york city, more than half a foot of snow coming down. >> it's really coming down here in brewster, new york. this truckstop is getting more active as the snow starts to kimye late on the roads. reporter: a far more dangerous system is affecting states to the west. what is being called an atmospheric bowling ball, dumping heavy rain and massive amounts of snow, up to four feet in the mountains of northern california, with blizzard conditions and avalanche

warnings. >> have you heard about the avalanche dangerous? >> i know it is still snowing up there prty it does increase the recent of there being another one. reporter: heavy ice sent powerlines crashing down on nearby vehicles. the wind also forcing this ski resort in south lake tahoe to temporarily close. the ski lifts swinging violently. winds gusting up to 60 mph. further south, heavy rain triggering flooding. that storm is not heading east. it could bring blizzard conditions to part of the upper midwest by tomorrow. severe thunderstorms and possible tornadoes to parts of the south. as for the impact on travel, the central and northern plains could see treacherous conditions beginning tonight. morgan norwood, abc news, new york. kumasi: make sure you are prepared for when weather hits with weather alerts just like this one. the accuweather forecast is targeted down to your neighborhood on the abc 7 bay

going to keep working at it. jobina: in the meantime, we will and expressing his disappointment, asking that the biden administration do everything they can to get him home quickly regardless of the price. written greiner has not spoken publicly since her release, but she is expected to issue a statement later this week. reggie: happening tomorrow, the department of energy is set to announce how local scientists came up with a fusion energy breakthrough. according to multiple reports, scientists at the national ignition facility in livermore produced a fusion reaction that generates more action -- more energy than it uses. if that is the case, it would be a major breakthrough that could lead to unlimited, cheap, clean electricity. scientists have been working on that process since the 1950's. it will be at least another decade before that tech could be used commercially. kumasi: today, twitter is expected to relaunch its twitter blue monthly cert -- subscription service. yesterday, ceo elon musk said

reggie: today, a san jose man who is accused of shooting and are more -- and unarmed black man is doing court. gloria rodriguez is in the newsroom right now. he could face hate crime charges. gloria: that's right. he is facing charges of felony assault with a semiautomatic firearm and potential prison time. part of the investigation now includes potential hate crime allegations. he is being accused of the unprovoked shooting of an unarmed black man who was renting and airbnb in a san jose neighborhood. the santa clara county district attorney's office filing a complaint against the 66-year-old, who is white. police reports obtained by be -- obtained by 87 news says he was renting a room across from the suspects house. the officer noted the victim described he was going to safeway to get some noodles and juice.
