>> plus, the blizzard warning in the heartland. and the threats in the south. mola lenghi starts us off in truckee, california. good morning, mola. >> reporter: good morning, robin. yes, you can really see northern california really getting the brunt of this storm here. cars just buried underneath here in truckee as you mentioned. anywhere from about 2 to 4 feet of snow here, but a similar story nationwide as much of the country getting blanketed from a few inches to a few feet of snow. overnight, winter storms causing chaos from coast to coast. in northern california, heavy snow, winds and rain bringing treacherous driving conditions. officials restricting parts of interstate 80 to only vehicles with chains on their tires after multiple spinouts. parts of the cascade mountains seeing more than 20 inches of snow. in southern california, torrential rain causing the santa ana river to swell. orange county fire department

rushing to this man's rescue. in utah, nearly 60-mile-per-hour winds knocking over this tractor-trailer. and while the west has seen the brunt of the heavy snowfall, the northeast getting hammered with its first major snow of the season. multiple wrecks in massachusetts, police reducing speed limits on parts of i-90 after at least seven cars involved in a wreck. one serious injury there. winds sending power lines down. on or near occupied cars. police telling drivers to stay inside until the proper crews could ensure their safety. and traffic conditions in the northeast also growing slippery with parts of upstate new york and new england, now digging out this morning. the threat continues this morning, as the storm pushes east, bringing with it the potential for rain, tornadoes and blizzard-like conditions. robin. >> we're going to talk about that right now. thank you, mola. let's go to ginger in central valley, new york, with more on the storms there. good morning, ginger. >> reporter: so many folks,

robin, did that big lake effect snow event. up here about an hour north of new york city we got an inch or two. this is nothing compared to what's been happening out west and what will happen with storm number two, because this one is gone, so most of the main roads are certainly fine here. can't be said for highways that will be blocked. blizzard warnings that include rapid city, the black hills there, western nebraska, high wind alerts all the way down to new mexico and winter storm watches into wisconsin. with the cold side on the north but the southern side is where we're more concerned about the severe weather outbreak tomorrow. so tuesday in louisiana, eastern texas, and far southwestern mississippi, including the city of jackson, this is a big event that could have an outbreak of severe storms if not tornadoes. feet of snow possible on the northern side. of course much more to come on both storms. back to you, robin.

we turn now to new mask advisories as viruses spike nationwide. 43 states reporting high level of flu-like illnesses. trevor ault is at a hospital here in new york with the details. good morning, trevor. >> reporter: good morning, george. we once again have health officials urging people to wear masks indoors. that's the case here in new york city and in many other prominent locations like california and arizona. not mask mandates but strongly recommending they wear the masks, the reason because of the continuous growing threat of quote/unquote, tripledemic, of covid, flu and rsv all at once. covid cases had been flat for a long time, but this past week, the number of infections and the number of deaths both climbed 50%. we surpassed over 10 million flu-like illnesses. in what could be the worst flu season in the a decade.

all these health officials are saying, wearing your masks indoors they believe can really reduce the risk of transmission, it's particularly useful if you're considered high risk for illness, the cdc is still recommending, as we're about to travel for the holidays, you still want to wear your mask on public transportation, planes, trains and buses, cecilia. >> a big recommendation there. trevor, thanks very much. we turn now to that cleanup of the biggest oil spill in the history of the keystone pipeline, more than half a million gallons spilling into a kansas creek. alex perez is there. big question, what will this mean for gas prices? >> reporter: this spill has been contained and the crews are working on the cleanup. but the big question remains, what went wrong? this morning, a race to repair a massive pipeline that spilled nearly 600,000 gallons of oil into this kansas creek and a federal investigation under way

to determine what went wrong. tc energy operates the keystone pipeline and is now working with the epa on the cleanup. it's the largest on-land spill in nearly a decade. the company telling abc news the exact cause of the leak remains unclear. >> we got our response crews working on responding to the incident and we also have our technical crews looking into the cause of this. >> reporter: this pipeline which carries oil from canada to refineries in the u.s. shut down for now. tc energy dispatching some 250 personnel working around the clock to keep the spill contained and manage cleanup. >> we won't restart our system here until it's safe to do so. until we have regulatory pr concerns the shutdown could jack up gas prices in the region. >> if the pipeline remains down for a week or longer, some areas in the plains states could see

gas prices stop declining and could see increases of potentially 25 to 40 cents a gallon. >> reporter: the spill in a rural area. officials say water sources for nearby communities remain safe and say there's no immediate threat to the public. but of course the long-term environmental impacts might not be known for some time. it remains unclear when the pipeline could resume normal operations. george. >> okay, alex, thanks. now to the man charged with building the bomb that took down pan am flight 103, now in u.s. custody after three decades. after the explosion over lockerbie, scotland, killed 270 people, mostly u.s. citizens. chief justice correspondent pierre thomas is in washington with the story. good morning, pierre. >> reporter: george, good morning. perhaps as early as today the man accused of building the bomb in the second deadliest terror attack on americans in u.s. history is expected in this courthouse behind him. the suspect bombmaker, after nearly 34 years he's now in u.s. custody currently held in alexandria, virginia, jail. for the downing of pan am flight

103 near lockerbie, scotland. we need to take a moment to reflect on why this was suchan important case. the plane was blown out of the sky as it flew to 31,000 feet after departing from london. the explosion killed all 259 people onboard, including 190 americans. among them, 35 students from syracuse university who had been studying abroad and who were on their way home for the holidays. the pieces of the plane were scattered across 800 square miles. so much falling debris that 11 residents of lockerbie were killed on the ground, george. >> pierre, this all goes back to the regime of the late libyan dictator gadaffi. >> reporter: the fbi identified the libyan officers. after his regime failed, he was taken into custody and allegedly admitted to his role in the

bombing. one official telling me last night while this extradition will be little solace for those lost so much, one said justice delayed is certainly not justice denied, george. >> pierre thomas, thanks. now to new details on brittney griner back in the u.s., reuniting with family and friends after being in russian captivity. we're learning about that high-stakes correspondent mary bruce is in washington with that. good morning, mary. >> reporter: brittney griner this morning remains at a military medical facility in san antonio, texas, taking the first steps to reclaiming her old life. this is the joyful reunion months in the making. brittney griner finally reunited with her wife cherelle seen in this new photo. that's the top hostage negotiator, roger carstens, who personally delivered griner back to the u.s. on instagram, cherelle thanking

the hands, seen, and unseen, that helped make it possible for me to see my wife again. after gaining her freedom in a prisoner swap in russia, brittney all smiles. greeting each crew member, carstens saying that she wanted to chat nearly the whole flight home, describing her ten-month ordeal in russian custody. >> she's in very good spirits and in good health. getting physical health care just to pack sure that he's ready for her re-integration into american society. >> reporter: her time in a russian prison camp, grueling. evident in video released by russian state media. her lawyer telling espn that she recently had the flu. and decided to cut off her hair because it kept freezing in the harsh cold. griner released in exchange for notorious russian arms dealer viktor bout. known as the merchant of death for supplying heavy weapons to murderous dictators and armed groups, bout sentenced for 25 years to conspire to arm a terrorist

group to kill americans. in contrast, griner was caught with hashish oil, a banned substance in russia and received a nine-year sentence. her harsh punishment, a sign that russia was using her as a political pawn, but biden's decision to release bout, has drawn criticism from republicans and some democrats concerned about the precedent it sets. >> we have to recognize why wide-eyed that right now as americans we have made it clear we're willing to do anything to bring a single american home. >> reporter: the white house is also under growing pressure to bring home detained american paul whelan, arrested on what the u.s. calls bogus espionage charges. whelan a former marine is now preparing to mark his fourth year in russia custody. >> they hold him differently because of these espionage charges, and so we're working through that now. we have a better sense of where the expectations are, and we're just going to keep working on it. ylors, pkiold espn she r c

qatar, where wahl died suddenly inspiring tributes and unanswered questions about why and how. >> his love of football with millions. >> reporter: this morning, a shocking tragedy at the world cup, renowned journalist grant wahl suddenly dying while covering a game friday. in the waning minutes between the netherlands and argentina, wahl reportedly collapsing in his seat, paramedics reportedly trying to revive him on site before he was rushed to a mopt where he was pronounced dead. the cause of his death still unknown. the 48-year-old in many ways the voice of soccer in the united states. >> maybe convincing americans who didn't embrace soccer to embrace it. it was a bit of a harder sell. >> reporter: was covering his eighth world cup, his packed schedule of covering matches and recording his podcast, football with grant wahl, wearing on him, to the point where he visited a local health clinic.

>> my body i think told me, even after the u.s. went out, dude you're not sleeping enough. >> reporter: just one day before his death, wahl mentioning his battle with bronchitis. >> i'm coughing a lot. it sounds like a death rattle sometimes. >> reporter: his agent and friend tim scanlon had been worried about him. >> i said we can back off the schedule. he said, no, we can do the work. >> reporter: just three weeks ago, wahl wearing this rainbow t-shirt to a world cup game in qatar where same-sex relations are illegal. saying security initially refused to let him into the stadium. the u.s. state department says it's involved in getting wahl home and determining the circumstances of his tragic death and overnight reports of another journalist dead in qatar. there was reporting that a qatari photo journalist died suddenly on sunday. those circumstances are unclear. >> all right, will, thank you so much. we're going to turn now to the splashdown of nasa's orion moon capsule after the journey to circle the moon.

our space expert gio benitez has the details. good morning, gio. >> reporter: i like that title. george, thank you for that. think about this, they had to safely splash orion down at it entered the atmosphere at 25,000 miles per hour and 5,000 degrees of heat, and they did it. believe it or not, this right here, was the most critical moment the parachutes deploying after that intense ride home. orion sent back stunning images after a month-long trip around the moon, going farther than any other spacecraft built for humans. 270,000 miles away from earth. no humans were onboard because this was a test for the next mission. the goal is to establish a base on the moon and around it. to explore deep space. even get to mars, maybe. now the next mission artemis ii is set for 2024. astronauts orbiting the moon, and then in 2025, putting the first woman and first person of color on the surface of the moon. it's an exciting time to be covering space. >> we can tell. >> thank you, gio.

may argue was alex murdaugh's reason to kill his own family. this morning, a new twist in the double murder case of disgraced south carolina attorney alex murdaugh. >> there was a huge difference between who alex murdaugh professed to be to the outside world and who he really was, and only he knew.e se knew. >> reporter: prosecutors revealing murdaugh's alleged motive claiming he killed his wife and son to gain sympathy and distract from his alleged financial wrongdoings. writing in a filing, the evidence will further show these financial crimes were about to come to light at time of the killings. more specifically on the date of the killings. >> the day of reckoning -- he was out of cards. after playing every card he could for ten years. >> reporter: murdaugh is accused of stealing almost $9 million from his clients and law firm. he's facing nearly 100 charges. for allegations ranging from

money laundering to staging his own death so his son could cash in on his life insurance policy. prosecutors now asking for the evidence of his alleged financial crimes to be admissible in his murder trial. >> my name is alex murdaugh, please hurry. neither one of them is moving. >> reporter: murdaugh is charged with shooting his wife maggie and son paul in the summer in 2021 at the family's home. he's pleaded not guilty, his attorneys say he had nothing to gain from the murders. >> there's no elements of alex murdaugh -- the financial benefit of murdering paul and maggie. no evidence of life insurance. no evidence that maggie or paul knew of any alleged financial m proprieties. >> reporter: and this case is expected to go to trial in just weeks. the murdaugh trial is on the schedule to start in january. george? let's bring in our chief

legal analyst dan abrams, and dan, we see the defense spending a lot of time trying to pull out a motive from prosecutors. >> the motive is kind of weird, right? it's an odd kind of motive. this idea that the motive is that he wants to get sympathy and distract attention from his other -- up until this point we thought that maybe one of the family members knew something, right, maybe they found out about his financial shenanigans. that's why he had to kill them. the defense attorney saying right there there's no evidence, so the motive is one almost of the strongest arguments for the defense, they've made a big deal of telling the prosecutors, tell us exactly how it happened and why do you think it happened. >> so many wild twists and turns in this case, so the prosecution produces this report that basically says that murdaugh, they found blood on his shirt. that puts him at the scene of the crime, but then they come out and say there were flaws with this report. >> this is a critical piece of evidence, because the motive is

a little bit odd, the prosecutors say that there's blood spatter on his shirt, that's a really big deal if they can show that. the problem is, that's evolved over time, meaning initially the expert had said we can't really see any blood spatter. additional new kind of tests were done where the experts said actually yes, i can find blood spatter here. the problem is, now that shirt has effectively been destroyed, and when i say effectively, literally, in the process of doing the testing, a, you're destroying the shirt and, b, the defense got the shirt and they say, wait a second, with this kind of testing this is useles to us. >> does this all weaken the prosecution's case? >> look, this is not an easy case. i mean, it's definitely the case that this guy was up to no good, it sure seems, in a lot of different ways in his life. but on the murder case you can't use just the financial crimes you can't say he was in a lot of
