>> good morning, america. nothing like those lights to get you in the holiday spirit, though, with a little sound effect from "top gun." >> we have breaking news overnight, ftx founder sam bankman-fried arrested in the bahamas set to face a judge this morning. dan abrams is standing by to break it down. we begin with the massive storm. americans feeling the impact coast to coast, including blizzard conditions and the south bracing for possible tornadoes. just moments ago a tornado was confirmed in oklahoma. ginger has the latest path in just a few moments. but first to mola lenghi. he's in denver, colorado, for us this morning. good morning, mola. >> reporter: well, good morning, robin. colorado under a blizzard warning, up to 18 inches expected throughout the day which could make for some dicey driving conditions this morning and this afternoon. more than 150 miles of interstate 70, from denver to the kansas border, has already been shut down in anticipation of the storm. this morning, californians are

digging out after a winter storm brought blizzard conditions almost six feet of snow inundating the sierras. roads completely covered. a now clearing train used to open a train line in donner pass. and in utah, more than 20 injured after a bus rolled off a snowy highway. winds over 100 miles per hour battering this ski resort in lake tahoe. that chair lift not safe to operate. it dumped a few feet on the area burying homes, knocking out power lines, canceling schools. residents will likely dig out for days. as the storm goes sweeping across the country some northeast states already experiencing up to nine inches of snowfall. in boston, dozens of flights delayed. passengers frustrated after being stranded for hours. >> they ran out of hotel rooms and that's when they started handing out cots. >> reporter: well, in addition to the snowfall, wind gusts of up to 50 to 60 miles per hour

are expected here in colorado, as well as other states in the storm's path has the the system intensifies, michael. >> thank you, mola. going to bring in ginger with more on the timing of the storm starting with those tornado threats. good morning, ginger. >> michael, we have new video from koco. this is from wayne, oklahoma. that's damage from a tornado just moments ago. we're seeing the pictures come in and they'll get out and do the survey. there's an active radar as this is going down, with many warnings and a huge area waking up with a tornado watch. that means this all throughout the morning hours. if you're traveling interstate 35, tornados can spin up on this strong line of storms. that's associated with the cold front that will push east. through the afternoon hours, east texas, the e shreveport and jackson. then n leans, birmingham. this isne. lots of power here. this is the area we'll be watching. there's also a snowy side of the storm i'll be getting to.

we'll get to that in a bit. george? >> all right, ginger. thank you very much. now to the breaking news overnight, ftx founder sam bankman-fried arrested in the bahamas set to face a judge this morning after u.s. prosecutors filed criminal charges in connection with the multibillion dollar collapse of his crypto company. chief business correspondent rebecca jarvis has the latest. good morning, rebecca. >> reporter: good morning, george. one of the most powerful people in the crypto currency bank, arrested overnight in the bahamas charged this morning by the s.e.c. remember, sam bankman-fried is one of the most powerful people in cryptocurrency and now he's accused of a multiyears' long fraud. this morning, sam bankman-fried once celebrated as the poster child for transparency in crypto currency. >> thank you, chair waters, ranking member mchenry and all members of the committee for having me to testify. it's an honor to be here. >> reporter: whose company inked

splashy partnerships with celebs like tom brady and steph curry. >> this is steph curry, the world's leading expert on crypto currency. >> i'm not. >> reporter: arrested overnight by local authorities in the bahamas at the request of the u.s. government charged by the the move coming just four weeks after bankman-fried's company ftx, one of the largest in the world valued at over $32 billion earlier this year filed for bankruptcy. our george stephanopoulos sitting down with bankman-fried in the bahamas for his first network interview shortly after. >> a lot of people look at you and see bernie madoff. >> yeah. i mean, i don't think that's who i am at all. but i understand why they're saying that. people lost money. >> reporter: in fact, ftx customers lost billions. at issue now is why. 30-year-old bankman-fried allegedly used ftx customer deposits to fund risky bets at

the other company he created and owned, a hedge fund called alameda. >> are you worried about going to jail? >> there are a lot of things that are worrying me right now and, you know, as best as possible i'm trying to focus on what i can do going forward to be helpful and, you know, let whatever regulatory and legal processes play out as they will. >> reporter: and since that interview with you, george, a lot has played out. sam bankman-fried was supposed to be testifying before congress today over zoom. he's now been charged by the s.e.c. and those federal charges will also be unsealed later this morning, george. >> rebecca, thanks. let's get more of this from dan abrams. >> he won't be able to avoid extradition. there's no way. the bahamas and the united states have a firm agreement in

place. you can tell where things are going right now. as you point out, quick arrest. very quick in terms of the relationship between the bahamians and the united states. two things that i find interesting about the timing of the arrest. number one, he was supposed to testify in front of congress tomorrow. today. why not just let him testify, get more statements on the record, and then arrest him? a lot of members of congress are frustrated now. you know, it is interesting that they decided to do it the day before. the fact they did it under seal. they wanted to act quickly, make sure he didn't go anywhere and get that arrest in place. >> that's under seal. the s.e.c. announced charges against him as well. >> that's not surprising, either. i think it's the -- both of them are of concern. i think the federal criminal charges are of more concern to him. but i think this is just the beginning of the legal process. >> i think we're going to see the interviews like the one i

did in these indictments? >> absolutely. you'll see them in the indictments or in the trial. i think you will see in the trial, his words come out against him in some way, shape or form. is it that he testifies? is it that they use your interview? there's no doubt, i think, they are going to use them. and so, this is why, even when someone says, i didn't do anything wrong, right? i am not guilty of this, that doesn't mean the prosecutors won't use it against you. >> and we know he did. >> exactly. michael? elizabeth schulze join us with the real impact on your wallet and where americans are finally saving. good morning, elizabeth. >> reporter: good morning, michael. prices are still historically high but this big inflation report out later this morning is expected to show some relief for consumers. analysts expected inflation rose

7.3% from a year ago. a slower pace than in october and in real terms it means lower prices at the pump. the national average around $3.25. that is actually lower than it was last december. americans are paying historically high prices in many part ofgs s of the economy. the federal reserve will likely welcome today's report, as it's been on an aggressive campaign to slow down borrowing in the economy, to tame inflation. the fed is still expected to raise interest rates by half a percentage point tomorrow. but if inflation continues to ease, it could slow down the pace of rate hikes going into next year. that would make it less expensive to take out a home or car loan or to pay off your credit card balance. robin? >> elizabeth, thank you so much. now, to the major surge in migrants in el paso, texas. federal officials have reported a high number of encounters in

the last year. there's concerns it could soon increase. matt rivers is just across the border in mexico, with more. >> reporter: good morning, robin. a trump era health policy known as title 42 has allowed u.s. immigration authorities to quickly expel many migrants here at the u.s./mexico border and yet there are now fears that if that policy will end next week, what might happen next. this morning, u.s. migration facilities operating on overdrive in el paso as hundreds of migrants cross the border in a matter of hours. parents tiptoeing through the river, children in tow praying upon arrival. others forced to wait for hours under a looming border fence. in a year filled with mass migration to the u.s., this stands out. migrants just a stone's throw miant facit paci paso burning wh hedepatrol to

transfer migrants to other parts of the border. a senior homeland security official calling the situation, quote, an absolute mess. daily apprehensions now averaging 2400 plus in the elle passion so sector over the last few days. this ahead of next week's possible end of title 42, a trump era policy that allows for the immediate expulsion of migrants without allowing them to seek asylum. this couple is waiting to cross until title 42 is lifted. they keep trying to cross because they're looking for a better quality of life. they have tried to cross once and were expelled under title 42. still they won't stop trying. and you can see there are still hundreds of people behind me waiting to be possessed by border patrol. some lighting fires to stay warm. i can tell you i've been reporting in this exact spot for years now and i have never seen anything quite like this, george.

>> okay, matt. thanks very much. the latest on iran. they're carrying out public executions in the wake of nationwide protests going to the fourth month and ian pannell has the story. good morning, ian. >> reporter: yeah, good morning, george. this is the second person to be executed in connection with these protests against the regime in particular its treatment of women. this image from iran human rights is majid reza rahnavard in a public execution. his family only receiving a phone call after the fact saying their son was killed and buried. last week another protester, mohsen shekari, was also executed. this video, confirmed for abc news, shows the sister of shekari and others mourning his death outside their house in tehran. at least 20 more are currently facing execution. the u.n. estimating 15,000 have been arrested in connection with the protest which, of course, erupted after the death of this

young woman in police custody. activists are also claiming around 500 have been killed but incredibly, robin, these protests are apparently still going on. >> they are. ian, thank you so much for your reporting. now to the latest on the s c ti. univernew mexico hospit where the sitcong good mor, fait >> r to you, robin. this has overwhelmed hospitals over new mexico. they set up an emergency triage center right outside the emergency room. this is a tent. they are treating this as another emergency room. come over here. let me show you what's going on. you can see when patients arrive they can check in over here. the situation so dire this allows them to have more space to screen patients. they are told to then go over here where doctors can screen them and determine the course of treatment. if they need to lie down, they're able to go around the corner here where there are beds set up. they've been at 100% capacity

for several weeks in the icu. the hospital's chief medical officer telling us this is the worst situation he's seen in his years of medicine, even worse than the peak of covid. nationwide nearly every state is reporting very high or high levels of flu-like activity. hospital beds are nearly 80% full. the wait times are long and doctors are pleading with people to only go to the e.r. when it is a life-threatening emergency. but medical experts believe there is a light at the end of the tunnel and that is the fact that it's not too late to get your covid booster shot. it's not too late to get your covid vaccine and they're advising people when you're indoors to put your masks back on, michael. >> it is not too late. thank you so much for that. we're going to turn to washington and president biden set to sign a historic bill on marriage equality that protects the rights of same-sex couples under federal law. the measure passed with bipartisan support. chief white house correspondent cecilia vega has more.

good morning, cecilia. >> reporter: hey, michael, good morning to you. this is a major win for the white house and frankly for anyone would feared that the supreme court could overturn same-sex marriage protections after it overturned roe v. wade. so let me tell you what it does. it requires states to honor all marriages regardless of sex, race, ethnicity or national origin. it has protections for religious liberty and does not require states to issue same-sex marriage licenses. but even if the supreme court decides to revisit same-sex marriage, this move today protects it. the bill as you said did have bipartisan support but a majority of republicans voted against it. some calling the bill frankly unnecessary and raising doubts about whether the supreme court would ever really overturn same-sex marriage. among those who will be here for this signing today survivors of the shootings from the pulse nightclub from club q in colorado. but so much of this today is about president biden's legacy, you'll remember ten years ago when he was vice president he publicly declared his support for same-sex marriage. today he is cementing it into law, michael. >> yes, he is. thank you so much, cecilia.

good morning, again, elizabeth. >> reporter: hey, good morning, again, robin. today's inflation report shows that red-hot prices are starting to cool off giving much-needed relief to consumers. iflation rose 7.3 in november from a year ago that was better than expected. some of the declines were in used cars, appliances. another big reason behind cooling inflation is lower prices at the pump the national average is now around $3.25 that's actually below the level where it was last december, today's inflation report will be welcomed news for the federal reserve, which has been an aggressive campaign to slow down borrowing in the economy to try to tame high prices. the fed is still expected to raise interest rates tomorrow by half a percentage point but if inflation does continue to ease it could slow down the pace of

rate hikes into next year. michael. >> all right, elizabeth, thank you for that. now to a "gma" health alert. major changes for the new annual care guidelines for the american diabetes association including a weight loss recommendation of up to 15%. chief medical correspondent dr. jennifer ashton is here to break it all down for us. what is new with the guidelines this year? >> basically much more aggressive. those with type 2 diabetes, although type 1 diabetes and gestational diabetes in the mix. take a look at their new recommendations based on a couple of parameters, number one, blood pressure. they're lowering that target goal to 130 over 80 or below when you look at cholesterol, the ldl or lousy cholesterol much more aggressive. for people without a diagnosis of heart disease that target ldl should be below 70. for someone who has heart disease they want it below 55 and i want to be crystal clear, that likely would require a

statin medication in addition to dietary management and then weight loss. it used to be 5% of your excess body weight for people over weight or obese, now it's 15% for people who are particularly dealing with obesity so, again, much, much more aggressive targets here. >> but for some people 5% to 15%, that could be really difficult and you're certified in obesity medicine. what do you recommend? >> i think when you're talking about people who are obese and, again, that's a third of our population now because we know that is a reversible and modifiable risk factor although a difficult one for type 2 diabetes, the mainstay now, we've talked about this before, fda-approved weight loss prescription medications, of course, modification in your diet, trying to be active which is not easy, by the way, if someone is obese, it's not that easy to say get out there and start jogging a couple of miles a day and then bariatric surgery is the gold standard and can reverse type 2 diabetes but, again, that's for people who have 100 pounds or more of

easy to make, just so delicious, very simple just like me, everybody, and you know what, look who is here to help us make them, it is babs, babs costello. >> hi, it's babs. >> otherwise known as the internet's grandma. she's a true social media star with nearly 5 million followers on tiktok and instagram combined and a cookbook called "celebrate with babs." babs, welcome to "gma." >> oh, my goodness, michael, it's a pleasure to be here. >> yes, i couldn't have anyone better to show me how to make these chocolate chip cookies. we'll get started because i cannot wait to eat some of these cookies. it all begins with butter. >> with butter. >> you melt most of the butter. how do you do that? >> so we're going to brown the butter. even more than melt and we have already started browning this butter and it's going to give our cookies such a rich deep flavor, but, you know, we start with room temperature butter but if you forgot to put the butter out. >> like i would do that. >> exactly. we all do, right. what you could do is you take a

glass, fill it with really hot water, pour the water out, put it over your stick of butter, wait five minutes, you're going to have room temperature butter. >> that's it? all that time i've been messing around. okay. >> don't put it in the microwave, by the way. >> i've done that too. okay, let's start mixing this up. >> what we'll do, we'll take the brown butter and we'll put it all -- right over -- four tablespoons of butter and i'm going to have you just stir that with a rubber spatula. i guess i'm going to stir it. >> i got it. >> so you stir that and it's going to melt and once the butter is all melted, we're going to add our sugars and the vanilla and the thing is we're using -- you can use dark brown sugar. you could use light, whatever. but make sure it's fresh. you don't want to use old brown sugar. you know, you want the best cookies possible. >> because i've had that brown sugar you got to bang it on the

counter to loosen it up. >> don't do that. okay. so as soon as that is melted -- >> you kind of have a specific way you mix this together. >> here's what we'll do. >> whisk. >> whisk. >> whisk, rest and repeat. >> two more times. so i think you got that butter melted. >> yeah. come on, add that in there. let's go. >> add the brown sugar and we'll switch to your whisk now and add granulated sugar and add some vanilla and you will whisk that baby and keep whisking until it's kind of combined. looks good. looks good. michael, you're a natural. >> thank you. >> now we'll a two egg yolks and into the batter and now you'll whisk that for 30 seconds. >> 30 seconds. >> 20, 30. we're good. >> now what else? >> we're going to let that rest for three minutes. >> now we take a break. >> we take a break, then once that's all mixed up you put

yours in the refrigerator. >> i do, after -- in fact, we'll add the flour and spices and all that business, going to put that right in and we're going to whisk that together and then, we're going to take this mixture and add it to our caramelized brown sugar. >> we'll do that right now. >> that is after we rest and whisk three times. >> yeah, they're going to go on the website to figure that out. >> it's all going to be there. adding 1 1/2 cups of chocolate chips, i like mine mixed. >> you got two different. >> semi sweet. whatever you like. mix them up. then take your cookie scooper and then you're just gonna dig that baby in the batter and you're going to make your cookies. okay? now, here's the key. you could either refrigerate your batter ahead of time or these cookies could go right into the refridge and -- >> what does that do? >> let them rest for 30 minutes.
