rob marciano is live in louisiana near new orleans with just a glimpse at the path of destruction. good morning, rob. >> reporter: hey, good morning, michael. boy, it was a long night in the new orleans metro area and a terrifying 20 minutes or so late yesterday afternoon when a tornado tore across the west bank of new orleans. this homes with lifted up off its foundation violently slammed to the ground. the exterior walls caving in the family was inside and survived without major injury and everybody on this street, we're told, has survived without major injury. we have sheet metal wrapped around poles. walls completely collapsed. damage, dozens if not hundreds of homes this region now unlivable. >> tornado is still there. >> reporter: overnight, a tornado outbreak hitting louisiana for the second night in a row. >> it's right there by my house. >> reporter: deadly and destructive tornadoes hammering the state.

at least three people now dead because of the storm. drone video capturing one ripping through the west bank of new orleans. a massive funnel cloud seen looming over the city from the highway, and we were right there on the ground as the threat unfolded. new orleans now under a tornado warning, the rotation about five miles that way, just over the mississippi, but with all this rain, we won't see it coming, and it's heading right for downtown. >> reporter: louisiana not the only one reeling. at least 50 tornadoes reported from texas to florida since tuesday morning. brandon is a boat captain on the mississippi. he tracked the tornado for over four minutes capturing the moment it crossed the river. neighborhoods and places like harvey, shredded. residents here in shock. >> i survived katrina and rita and all these things i've survived. i've been so lucky and been so lucky and i guess it catches up to everybody at least. >> reporter: amanda in her home of nearly 15 years when the tornado hit away from her husband. >> i just grabbed the kids, just put them on the ground and got

on top of them. >> reporter: parts of the house now destroyed. what did you feel when you saw down the street when you got here >> everything else can be rebuilt, but you can't replace that. >> reporter: well, certainly great to see that family reunited and safe. the idea of the power, that's a 2x6 impaled into the windshield of this car. the gentleman who owns this car owns this home and built it with his own hands over the past several years and now looks to be unlivable. this is not the only tornado. one in new iberia. five injuries and damaged a medical building and one in laplace all coming a week before christmas. michael. >> yeah, bad time and very destructive, rob. thank you so much. we turn to ginger with where the storm is headed next. good morning, ginger. >> hey, good morning to you, michael. we're waking up for the third morning in a row with tornado watches in the country, so this morning it's crossing interstate 10. you can see it from north florida up into south georgia. i-75 will get it through the

morning and then eventually through the afternoon hours, so everybody from tampa to orlando all the way down to cape coral, fort myers needs to watch for the cell, late morning, early afternoon. it's a quick event. we have to go to duluth now, because, remember, there is a northern part. they've had 10 to 16 inches. live look down one of the streets. you got another foot or so of snow on top of all the wind that's going to come with this. south dakota, western south dakota, up to three feet already. they've had to shut down parts of major highways, some re-opening along the wyoming state line. but take this to the east and we're going to see. already a quarter inch in some parts of appalachia and end up with three-quarters of an inch of freezing rain. that means it falls onto this and freezes on contact. it freezes on contact and creates that glaze threw college station, george, snow? the green and white mountains. >> okay, ginger. thank you very much. the fallout from the latest interest rate hike. it raised rates by half a point. officials signal the fight against inflation has not been won, and rebecca jarvis has the

details. good morning, rebecca. >> reporter: good morning, george. stomping out inflation is the fed's number one priority, and the job isn't finished. they actually expect inflation to remain stubbornly high for some time and won't get back to what we call historically normal levels until 2024 or 2025 based on the latest fed projections. to that end they expect to hike interest rates into next year as high as 5.5%. so what does that mean in real terms? it means borrowing costs get more expensive. it's more expensive to take out a new mortgage or a car loan. now, even if you're not planning on making a big purchase if you're using a credit card, this definitely impacts you. the average credit card balance right now in the country, $6,200. with these anticipated fed rate hike, it will cost you an additional $740 to pay off that credit card if you're only making the minimum payments. it's something to consider as we head into the holidays and

yes. >> reporter: earlier our team part of the convoy driving down to the front line. this is the meeting point just a couple of kilometers back from where the exchange will be made and these guys from ukrainian military intelligence are going in to make the swap. >> reporter: this operation only possible because of a short local cease-fire agreed by russia and ukraine. once out, suedi telling me being beaten and electrocuted in russian jails wasn't the hardest part. >> the hardest part was hearing the screams of other people, men crying. you know, i heard one woman being tortured, you know, so i saw dead people. it was -- yeah, that was the hardest part. >> reporter: the russians released suedi from prison weeks ago but he says they took his passport. that's why he couldn't get out of russian-held land. now he's focused on getting back to minnesota. suedi murekezi telling me on the

phone this morning that he's in touch with u.s. and ukrainian officials. he's going through the protocol of being debriefed after his time in russian-controlled eastern ukraine. he's hoping to be back in the u.s. in time for christmas. george. >> tom, thanks. we're going to get the latest now on the assault of speaker pelosi's husband paul. his attacker appeared in court wednesday where prosecutors released new evidence including the 911 call. mola lenghi has the story. good morning, mola. >> reporter: good morning, george. a judge decided the case against david depape, the man charged in the attempted murder of paul pelosi, has enough evidence to go to trial. in court for the first time, prosecutors played police body camera video showing the moment back in october, the 42-year-old depape allegedly attacked pelosi with a hammer, fracturing pelosi's skull. now, prosecutors say depape was on a suicide mission when he broke into the pelosis' san francisco home looking for speaker nancy pelosi. speaker pelosi was not home at

the time. prosecutors wednesday also playing paul pelosi's 911 call where he was heard asking the operator, are the capitol police around? i got a problem. a gentleman just came into my house waiting for my wife to come home. the operator later asking what is his name? prosecutors say depape could then be heard in the background answering david depape. now, paul pelosi continues to recovers from list injuries yesterday appearing alongside his wife as her portrait was unveiled at the u.s. capitol. depape pleaded not guilty to all charges currently held without bail. >> mola, thank you. the latest on the investigation into the college murder mystery in idaho. officials are revealing newly discovered surveillance video of a car racing by shortly after the murders. kayna whitworth has the details. >> reporter: this morning, a new clue in the idaho murder mystery, police now investigating this surveillance image showing a white car. it was taken from an exxonmobil station's camera around 3:45, the morning four university of idaho students were murdered. the station about a mile away from their home.

>> they need the community to help. >> reporter: the parents of kaylee goncalves, who was killed in the attack, now urging other businesses to turn over whatever footage they have before it's too late. >> there's a 24-hour mark on a lot of those little video cams. there's a seven-day. one week, one month. >> we're hitting the month. if the key part of the evidence is outside that residence, then we have -- >> we're losing it. >> -- to get it now. >> reporter: fearing that evidence is disappearing kristi goncalves shares what she thinks happened in the early morning hours of november 13th. >> i think this person went in very methodical. i think he really thought it out. i think he was quick. i think it was quiet, and he got in and he got out. >> reporter: leaving her daughter and three others stabbed to death and a community on edge. the campus now preparing to shut down for winter break. idaho state police letting us ride along in their ramped up 24-hour patrols. everybody is very aware of their

surroundings right now. >> they are, and really they should be at this point, and there will be a resolution to this, to this investigation, but certainly in the meantime, everyone should be vigilant. >> reporter: and he went on to say he is confident that justice will be served. in the meantime, xana kernodle's family is handing out flyers and hope to leave 5,000 of them on doors around the university, and kaylee and maddie's families have planned a joint celebration of life for the two to be held at the end of month. >> kayna whitworth, thank you. space news now. a substance shooting out of the russian soyuz capsule that carried an american astronaut to the space station and gio benitez has the story. good morning, gio. >> reporter: hey, george, good morning. yeah, any time there is a problem 250 miles from earth, it's a big deal, and this time we could actually see it. take a look.

this is the leak that we're talking about here. this is the russian soyuz. this is on russia's side of the space station. nasa revealing it was a coolant leak and happened right before the russian cosmonauts were about to do the space walk, that was canceled. this ship brought frank rubio to the space station so also would be his ride back home to earth. now, nasa, the russian space agency and the european space agency, they're all working together to investigate this leak and then figure out those next steps. now, this morning nasa says that the crew members are safe and that no doubt they were not in any danger during this leak. but they've got to figure this out, guys. >> they certainly do, gio. thank you for your reporting. now to the tragic and sudden death of stephen "twitch" boss. the dancer and former deejay was found dead of an apparent suicide. heartbreaking for his wife and their three children as well as the many twitch inspired. matt gutman is in los angeles with more. good morning, matt. >> reporter: good morning, robin. the entertainment industry reeling this morning.

that's because twitch seemed the personification of joy. beaming sunshine through our screens into our homes, now, the lapd has determined there was no foul play. this was a suicide, but seems it was one that no one saw coming. this morning, hollywood and fans mourning the tragic loss of artist and dancer stephen boss who went by twitch best known for his deejay gig on "the ellen degeneres show." >> how are you? did you have a great summer? >> i had a great summer. >> reporter: the l.a. coroner saying he died by suicide. twitch was a born performer whose effortless charm and hip-hop moves put him on first the dance competition show "so you think you can dance" in 2008 and then he was made a judge on the show creating cross generational appeal where he met his wife allison holker on season 7. ellen first bringing her on in

and injured another student. another student is charged with opening fire inside the bus as the group returned to campus after a field trip last month. when did you realize something was wrong? >> when i got up and the bus was stopping is when the gunshots started ringing out, and in that moment i knew we had to, you 46 know, get off that bus because it could get a lot worse. me and another teammate were the only two to get off the bus. i looked over my shoulder and realize we were the only two running. i didn't really think much in that moment. it was just literally an instinct and a reaction to go back. >> you said you were three or four steps on the bus. >> yeah, i was -- >> you see him coming off the bus. >> yeah, and it was -- i mean, he was just so close, and i felt so hopeless and so powerless in that moment. >> did he say anything? >> nothing at all. he just -- i mean, we locked eyes, and that was it. it was just a cold look.

it was -- i don't know. it was just like a numb look and in that moment, i just dropped everything and took off running. i felt him hit me in my back, but i just -- i knew i wasn't going down without a fight, and i found a premed student, and that was god again. he was -- she was there to help me. she kept me calm, you know, kept my breathing under control, was checking my pulse until the ambulance came. >> reporter: christopher darnell jones jr. was charged with the shooting. how well did you know him? >> i didn't know him. i didn't know him at all. i had saw him that morning before we got on the bus. >> and what was his demeanor when you saw him that morning? >> he was looking normal to me. >> and d'sean perry, devin chandler, lavel davis jr. were

your teammates. >> they were. >> and they were all killed in the shooting. when did you find out that they didn't make it off the bus? >> i found out two days later. i found out because i went straight to surgery, because i think i got hit in the small intestines, the kidney, and they were trying to see if it damaged my bladder. by the grace of god, it missed my spine by i think two centimeters or something like that. >> what was it like when you found out they didn't survive? >> i've never cried like that before. i mean, i really -- i lost a brother that day. i loved lavel with all my heart. loved devin with my all my heart, but, d'sean, it was different with him. it was -- man, that was my brother, so it was tragic hearing that he was gone.

>> and you if you could say something to the shooter, what would you say to him? >> i just would love to ask if he knew the magnitude of his actions in the moment, like if he ever thought how many people would be affected for the rest of their lives. >> and how has this whole thing changed you? >> it's just, i've never been as -- like i said, vulnerable or emotional, but now it's just like, i don't really care. i can't control it. i'm not afraid to, you know, tell my friends or my teammates, i love you. you know, i'm looking forward to seeing you again and really meaning it now. >> i got to say, even sitting here now and listening to your story and the way you're composed about it is just mind-blowing to me. >> i'm doing it for, you know,

my brothers i lost. >> like the same responsibility you felt that made you turn around is the same responsibility that you feel to tell your story? >> right. i'm still doing it for the people i love, for the people that were on that bus, and everything i do from here on will be, you know, in their name, in their light, and i just want to do as much as i can to keep their flame lit. >> and really a special young man, and, you know, after speaking to him and having the chance to spend an hour with him, i'm not surprised that he ran back. he said, i realized i was running, but the people i got on the bus with weren't coming off, and he felt a responsibility to go back and help them and put himself in harm's way. i'm happy he's okay. celebrate -- he had a birthday, so happy birthday to michael. i'm just glad he's around to celebrate his birthday with him. >> seems like he has a big heart. >> yeah. >> big heart, george. i've done a lot of these interviews. and when i tell you, i'm just

made. >> yes. >> now you've made it into a cookie. >> yes. >> how have you done that? >> well, when i create new recipes, i always draw my inspiration from people that inspire different ingredients and i was inspired by your connection to your family. as awe viewer you're always talking about your family and that connects with me. i cherish my family and wanted to connect something that meant something to your family so your mom had done a segment on her christmas punch which is lime sherbet and strawberries and took those flavors and put them into your pie but that day when we were here with the pies you were so kind to me. >> i got emotional. >> extra special kind but took time with me after the show and were very encouraging and always remembered your kindness and it stuck with me and shows how the importance of kindness is so all these years later i've always remembered that. so this year i needed cookie recipes, i do a lot of cookie swaps and said, i was thinking of you and your kindness, i'll take the flavors of the robin roberts pie and make the robin

roberts christmas cookies so these are your christmas cookies. >> that means a lot. it starts with an oatmeal. >> we have a ginger oatmeal cookie, which is a sandwich and we're filling it with lime filling. that's the lime sherbet topping it with strawberries. it's all the flavors of your mother's punch in a cookie, and this way, you know, her recipe now has a new adaptation so bringing old traditions into new tradition. >> my mom, the best thing she would make was a reservation. she could make a reservation. >> she knew what she was doing with the punch. >> get us started. >> so we'll first -- the first thing we have room -- butter softened to room temperature and sugar. we'll turn this on. beat that together and can you do the wet ingredients. >> i can do that. >> these three, we will add vanilla extract and egg. >> one egg. >> and molasses, don't skip this. there's not much molasses in there but everyone says do i need that, yes, you do.

>> for what? >> for flavor and it will enhance the spices and texture. we want a soft cookie because we're making a sandwich. good enough. now we have our dry ingredients in a separate bowl. mix these up before we add them in there. to our flour we will add whole oats, not instant oats. >> instant fans here. it's like the whole ones. >> this is texture. >> texture. >> then we'll add spices. receive our cinnamon. >> love cinnamon. yes. >> then we have our ginger. >> ginger. >> this is the important one, there's a lot of ginger in here because that's the ginger ale from the punch. we want that flavor to come through and nutmeg and cloves. and salt and baking powder. >> ooh. that's here. got it. >> that all gets mixed together. >> i thought you were pouring a can of ginger ale up in that puppy. i didn't know you had ginger. >> not a bad idea. this is also really good. >> i'm on to something. >> this goes into there.

how did you do that all this week? >> you got it. it's fabulous. that's the beauty of baking. you get to do it your own way. so that's all going to get mixed together. you did fabulous. >> thank you very much. >> so then you'll add up with dough and will you scoop and i will roll. so scoop about one-inch scoops. perfect. scoop it on to the cooking sheet. roll it and get it into a spherical shape and we want nice circles. place them two inches apart. the key, you will bake them to seven to eight minutes and 350 degrees. >> soft. so don't overbake. >> when you take them out they won't look done yet but they'll keep baking from the residual heat and then they'll set up as they cool. leave them right there. don't touch until nice and cool. >> the lime. >> this is where we bring in the lime. i'll fire this up. we will start with -- can you add these. let's trade. trade spots. go behind me.

so i'm going to do -- you'll whip up softened butter into that and add fresh lime juice. that's where we get our lime flavor in. >> the lime juice. >> lime zest. >> oh. come on out there, lime zest. let me get out there. there you go. >> well done. >> then we have some heavy cream which, again, is not a lot. it's important for texture so don't skip that. >> okay. >> beautiful, and then this powdered sugar, which we'll do a little for show. we don't want it to go poof, everywhere. that's all going to get mixed up and end up with this lovely lime filling and you get a pastry bag. >> oh, goodness. what if you don't have a pastry bag. >> you can use one of the zip top bags have you in the kitchen. snip off the corner. >> you don't want to overfill. >> the key -- look how satisfying it is. >> whoo. >> you want to leave it -- >> pretty. >> you want to leave an edge around the very edge without any

filling and the reason for that you'll take your top cookie. >> oh. >> and place it on the filling and press it slightly so it becomes a sandwich. that's why you leave the edge. >> a little overfilled. now, how about -- well, guys, you guys -- >> we've been eating? >> done. >> now how about the strawberry. >> that's going to be our decoration and put a little dollop, a fun word on the top of your filling. >> a dollop will do you. >> every time and take a strawberry and plop it right on the top. and so now we've got the flavor, ginger ale. lime inside and the strawberries. do you like? >> momma, mm-mm. you've done it again, kristen. >> oh, thank you. i thank your mother every time i make these because she knew what she was doing with with these flavors. wanted you to know this is a
