construction at morgan hill as the work for the reservoir has begun. dustin dorsey explains why it is critical for water supply and how long it will take to complete. reporter: the south bay's biggest reservoir is getting a facelift. stage one of the anderson dam, seismic retrofit is underway after six month of delays. >> it is one of our most important pieces of water supply in santa clara county. infrastructures agent. we have an undersized pipe and a dam than his replacement. reporter: it is vulnerable to major earthquakes. that will be fixed during stage two of the project. during stage one, the current pipe that transports water out of the reservoir moves much too slow and needs to be replaced, this new 20 foot diameter 1750 foot tunnel will work 10 times faster. >> being able to get a large amount of water out of the reservoir helps us lower the reservoir in case there is an

emergency such as an earthquake or large storm that can create a spill. the way we can move controlled water out of the reservoir. reporter: excavation began overnight. they are clearing 10 feet per day. it starts at the base of the old dam. the tunnel will come out on the side, down underneath the water around the corner, to move water around during construction. >> the water is used for water supply, municipal and industrial uses in santa clara county as well as environmental uses that releases into cow udy creek, which runs 25 miles from here -- coyote creek which runs 25 miles from here. reporter: the drought has depleted our water supply in the south bay. john says completing a project that makes water transportation safer and more efficient is crucial. >> water supply is important to everybody. it's important that this

project, along with other projects we are engaged in are completed in a timely manner. reporter: the tunnel project will take two years to complete. the entire retrofitting will take eight years after that. larry: building in san jose as google moves forward with plans to build a transit village. sky 7 was over the sunset -- sunlight bakery depot. this is on south montgomery street near park avenue in the downtown area. according to our media partners, the property sits on the footprint of the transit village. google is going to knock a total of four buildings. kristen: janitors fired from twitter's headquarters are demanding their jobs back. there getting support from top san francisco officials. the janitors held a press conference in the city. they lost their jobs after twitter severed its contract with the company that employed them. they say they have been devastated by losing their income and benefits before the

hanukkah, what would you like them to know about the holiday? >> it is almost a 2000 year old holiday. it celebrates the continuation of jewish culture. there's lots of traditions and it is taking on different meanings and times in history. the big thing is, these days in the wintertime, and gets dark, these are our shortest days. like a lot of traditions that we want to bring light at this time, just like there is a christmas tree or lights, we light the menorah. it's a time for family. it's time for gathering with friends. there's great foods you eat. it's time to celebrate. often there is giftgiving as well. it also -- one interesting thing is it is an eight day holiday. for eight nights, this year starting on december 18, each night we light a different candle, by the end you have all

a 30 year fixed rate mortgage average, 6.31%. it was 6.33% a week ago. for most of the year the rate has been climbing as the fed has raised rates to slow down inflation. but, contrast this. this time last year, the average for 30 year fixed rate was 3.1%. it's double now. kristen: a stanford alumni has been named harvard university's first like president. claudine will begin her duties on july 1 next year. she taught at stanford from 2000 to 2006 and then taught at harvard, and eventually became harvard's dean of the faculty of arts and sciences. she is humbled by the confidence harvard's governing board has placed in her to leave the institution. enrollment at california community colleges has seen a large drop. our data team dug into the numbers. our reporter has more on what schools are doing to combat the issue. reporter: there were

approximately 419 thousand fewer students at california community colleges last year, compared to the 2018-2019 school year, according to data from the community colleges chancellor's office. in bay area, school saw a decrease of enrollment nearly 20% including contra costa college. 2021-2022. a 2% decrease. this doctors the acting president at contra costa college. >> our numbers are still below 2018 and 2019, we have mounted a small comeback. we are seeing more students enroll. reporter: dr. rogers suspects the coven 19 along with construction on the new science center completed on april may have stopped people from enrolling. santa rosa junior college saw 27% decrease from 2021 to 2022

compared to 2018 to 2019. as this president says, he believes creating affordable student housing will help increase enrollment. >> it has become unaffordable for families to live in sonoma county. that is why we have built in my background, we are building and completing a five-story, 352 bed student residence hall, which is unique for community colleges, which are commuter schools. reporter: the doctor says it is a matter of investing in program students need and want. >> we know a lot of students want to come back to school. we just have to make it as simple and easy for them to do that as well. reporter: across california the largest loss was among students ages 50 plus, a 32% drop from the pre-pandemic school year. younger students ages 20 to 24 and 25 to 29 also saw large drops. among racial and ethnic groups,

kristen: it is time now for the four at 4:00. group is advocating for san francisco's embarcadero to become the new car free zone, grand embarcadero. they want to remove cars and separate foot traffic from bicycle traffic, saying it will be a safer way to get around. there is concerns, advocates had this to say. >> i have to use a car at times. but it's a matter of making it the least desirable option. it takes a few minutes longer if you want to go by car. but transit is now wicked fast. bikes are extra safe. kristen:

unfortunately, transit doesn't get you everywhere. no formal plan has been drawn up. we have talked to business owners, they are all against this saying it will discourage people from going to nearby businesses. look, if they were -- there were fast and efficient alternatives, i think people would be all for that. around here, are there a lot of options? larry: not really. i drive down the embarcadero every day, it's become a nightmare. ama: i know it for the pedestrians and the bikers, though i see this dirt bike or without a helmet doing wheelies but, the cars will have to do -- left to go somewhere. if you are trying to go up north or to wine country, you have to go through the city to get to the golden gate bridge, it might discourage people from coming here to visit. larry: as we

the beautiful shot, it would be so nice to stroll down the embarcadero and have to worry about cars -- not have to worry about cars. we have to close the ferry business? they have work to do. what about the congestion in other parts of the city? it's already jammed. we are thumbs down. kristen: we may be thumbs up on the next thing? [laughter] larry: i don't even want to talk about this. the bosses are like, not again. how about a four day work week? what about a four-day school week? the district in missouri is the latest to make the switch. students and staff will get every monday off starting next fall. the goal is to attract and keep more teachers. parents a the problem is childcare -- the problem with this is childcare. the district is offering childcare but at a cost.

well, >> if i want to use the district services i will spend $1400. larry: more than 1600 districts nationwide have ditched the five-day week. research has a show significant academic drawbacks for kids. you've got grandkids, right? do you think -- they would favor a four-day school week, i'm not sure they would learn as much. >> that's a good question. i question it. i was an educator many years ago before got into the business. my experience probably does not apply to today. i am ok with a four-day school week as long as the kids are exposed to academic rigor. learn something. i'm meeting more people who don't seem to learn much. but they went to schools that were reputable. larry: they are full-grown adults now. [laughter] kristen: i wonder if they would be more inclined to pay

attention if it is only four days, versus trying to get through five days. my kid, who is not in real school, she's not an elementary yet, but she is like why do i have to go to school every day? if you are in college, you can choose to take classes only four days or three days or whatever. the little ones that is fine. for the grade schoolers, may be a bit more structure. a lot of them love school. it can be fun. >> my grandkids love school. ama: not just because they are seeing their friends. if you're going to go for days you have to have the work week go for it is too. kristen: that is what we're getting at ama. larry has been waiting for you to say it. larry: i am wondering, when you going to get to this. kristen: school in ohio is taking a unique approach to helping students reduce stress. they have installed a punching room.

studies show physical activity like boxing can reduce stress and improve your mood. self-esteem and quality of life. students fill out a survey before they go when so teachers can see how well it is working. soon, the school will have a therapy dog for students as well. i think there are different approaches to relieving stress. this may be one of them. larry: i guess. >> the sports offices our punching room. [laughter] larry: we have a lot of equipment. i'm happy to be the punching bag. here's a better question, who wants to go into the punching room with kristen. i don't know about that. anyway you can reduce stress. ama: if it keeps them from taking it out on their classmates and doing other things, i am all for it. kristen: it doesn't look like there punching each other. ama: that is what they need to do. kristen: they could offer yoga as a complement to that. larry: it doesn't have to be eating things into submission.
