the 23-month-old was killed on i-880. his dad was at the press conference today. his translator said the family had mixed feelings when they learned of three suspects being arrested. today, for the first time, we learned details about what led to this outcome. the alameda county district attorney and the california highway patrol confirmed the arrests of three suspects in connection to the killing of jasper. >> today, i'm announcing the arrests and charges being filed against trevor green, ivory vivins, and jackson. >> they were initially four suspects, parts of rival gangs. one of them was key in this investigation. >> the driver of the ultima was shot in the lower -- altima was shot in the lower back. he has since been killed in what was believed to be more gang warfare, but he went to the hospital that afternoon in san francisco.

through the great work of the california highway patrol, they recovered the altima with bullet holes near the hospital. while being treated, his hands were tested for gunshot residue, which turned out to be positive. he was interviewed and he admitted to being shot on the freeway. luz: the three remaining suspects face multiple charges, including murder and shooting at an occupied vehicle. chp categorized this case as challenging and said the wu family was their main driver for justice. >> although nothing will replace little jasper, i hope you will take some solace in the fact that those responsible will have to answer for what they did and that justice will be served. luz: jasper's dad officers in the das office -- and the das office. >> i wish no family would go through what they are going through, and they want to keep everybody safe. luz: jasper is one of many who

have been shot and killed on bay area freeways. according to the gun violence archive data, at least 14 people have been killed in highway shootings in the bay area and 65 injured from 2018 through march of 2022. i asked the da about those cases. she said they are not giving up on them either. dan: as we said at the top, it's been over a year. it seems like chp officers had important information from the beginning. what took so long? luz: the day of the shooting, when the first suspect went to the hospital, he confessed to being part of a shooting on highway 880. but chp officers said they needed all this time to gather evidence to solidify the case before taking it to the district attorney's office. dan: luz, thank you. ama: new details on the search for a missing petaluma woman with dementia. police announced she was seen in san francisco yesterday. this picture was taken at the

wells fargo bank on king street near oracle park. virginia went there to try to cash a check. an employee recognized her as the missing woman from the news and called police, but she left before officers arrived. >> has no relatives, no associates in san francisco that we are aware of. she hasn't contacted any relatives now coming up on 48 hours, so we don't know where she's staying or how she is staying. the good thing is, as of yesterday, she was still, it looked like, safe and alive. ama: if you see virginia foucay, you are asked to call police. dan: the bay area cold snap continues for another night. a live look outside as we get ready for more overnight freeze watches and warnings. very chilly. let's go to spencer christian. spencer: the cold weather is still with us. here's a look at what we can expect overnight and into the

our reporter is live with more. >> hey, we are definitely feeling it here. it's very cold already. there is extra concern for those living outside, not to mention our pets. >> we are just going to pull. >> cots are being assembled inside this emergency shelter at the sonoma marin fairgrounds in petaluma, where it's a warm 70° inside. outside, another night of freezing temperatures is in the forecast. >> these are made by community members. >> the executive director of petaluma people services center says her nonprofit is making room for as many un-housed people as it can. those who want to come in from the cold. >> we will end up with about 15, probably, tonight. they know we are going to be open again. >> our biggest concern is those who are unhoused, many of them are choosing to stay unhoused, but when it is this cold, it's

the frostbite, the inability to sleep. >> it was really cold last night. >> the center's safe team hit the road, spreading the word about the shelter and providing outreach for those living on the streets, like donna. >> hey, donna. >> thank you. >> of course. it just feels good. somebody's going to be sleeping out and have frost on their body when they wake up. instead, they can be in the warming center. hopefully, we are saving lives. >> docs were bundled up -- dogs were bundled up in festive sweaters. always bring your dogs and cats inside at night, experts say. >> a lot of us think pets are impervious to the cold, but they feel it and can get cold, even hypothermic. >> check out this stray kitten, which climbed into the engine compartment of a car recently to keep warm. it took a while for an employee to get him out, but finally, success. the cat was named dave.

the mayor elect has ambitious plans to tackle some of these concerns, but the deficit may be a problem and could delay those plans. ama: janitors fired from twitter headquarters are demanding their jobs back, and they are getting support from top officials in the city. they lost their jobs after twitter severed its contract with the company that employed them. they say they've been devastated by losing their income and benefits right before the holidays. elected officials were there to keep -- to champion their cause. >> we are asking the executives and new owner of twitter to be compassionate, to be understanding. to work with this community. ama: the janitors say the not given severed or ample notice -- severance or ample notice when they lost their jobs. twitter has not responded to our request for comment. dan: concern that hospitals could get overwhelmed by the tripledemic. the five things you can do to protect yourself during the

ama: winter viruses continue to surge in california. bay area officials updated how hospitals are being impacted. our reporter joins us live in the newsroom with more. >> doctors are worried and they say the numbers are high and getting higher. to avoid getting really sick from the flu, covid-19, or rs v, doctors strongly suggest you mask up at large gatherings and get all your vaccinations. >> we have, in the last month, rsv has really piqued. >>-- peaked. >> it's a tough time for doctors. there's a tripledemic in the er. >> we are seeing flu and covid still around. >> more people in san francisco

have been going to the hospital recently. >> as of december 13, the reported number of adult patients in san francisco hospitals with a respiratory viral infection was 126. >> that's up 14 from last week. health experts say it's tough people to tell the difference between the three viruses. >> the tricky thing about these respiratory viruses is they can prevent -- present similarly. the symptoms of flu, rsv, and covid can be actually -- almost the same. >> health officials are begging people to get their flu shot, the latest covid booster, and the omicron vaccine is available for kids as young as six months. >> we've seen great protection with these vaccines. if they don't prevent you from getting infected, they prevent the most serious complications. >> with the holidays and big gatherings coming up, people are not taking any chances. >> i've had covid twice. i've been vaccinated four times, so i must prepare this i can be. >> i'm not taking any risks.

household. this comes as the government reports covid cases, hospitalizations, and deaths are on the rise once again. there's also the winter threat of the flu and rsv still looming. >> we have good countermeasures for at least two of those three, covid, influenza, and respiratory syncytial virus. we've got to get people to get vaccinated to protect them, their family, and society. dan: the website has been shut down for about three months so the government could save the supply of tests for a potential winter surge, which is what they are experiencing now. if you need more tests, you can purchase up to eight per month and be reimbursed through your insurance. ama: in the nation's capital, the house of representatives took the first step toward resolving puerto rico's territory status. majority leader steny hoyer said it was, quote, a lon g and torturous path to get the proposal to the house floor.

crews have started to knock it down on south montgomery street near park avenue. our media partners say google is behind the demo work. the building sits squarely in the footprint of where the tech company is planning to build a massive transit village. google is planning to level four buildings in this initial phase of construction. ama: a brand-new beachfront public park is now one major step closer to opening, set to be located on a scenic piece of property in san mateo county, once under private ownership. now that it has been turned over to the public, big plans are underway. zach fuentes explains. zach: views like this are one many reasons people come to visit the bay area. but for many years, this hasn't been open to the public. now that is set to change. >> 2, 3. zach: the property has under private ownership for years, but was transferred to san mateo county in 2020.
