all of that for us. the breaking news, twitter suspended multiple journalists from prominent outlets including "the washington post," "the new york times" and cnn. elon musk claimed a violation of policy. andrew dymburt starts us off. good morning, andrew. >> reporter: good morning, george. in his latest move as boss, musk wielding his power as ceo to spend several well-known journalists but some he axed from twitter include people who have been critical of him. overnight, twitter's new owner elon musk suspending the accounts of multiple journalists from news outlets including "the new york times," "the washington post" and cnn for allegedly violating the company's new doxing policy by sharing his live location. it refers to sharing personal information online. musk joined a twitter spaces conference to address it. the wave of suspension comes on the heels of musk's moves to

permanently ban the @elonjet that tracked the location of his private yet using publicly available data despite saying last month he would leave the account up as part of his commitment to free speech. some reporters have been reporting on the new doxing policy and saying it was violated by sharing his live location amounting to what he described as "assassination coordinates," coming amid a wave of controversy on content moderation since he took control of twitter. cnn saying in part we have asked twitter for an explanation and we will re-evaluate our relationship based on that response. musk did tweet that these moves were not retaliation against journalists who have criticized him. mike? >> all right, andrew, thank you so much. breaking news for our viewers in the west, american student kenny deland has been found alive after going missing for two weeks in france. lama hassan has the latest. >> reporter: just moments ago

french prosecutors confirming to abc news that american college student kenny deland jr. who had been missing since november 29th has been found alive and well in spain, according to the prosecutor he has phoned his parents, he's a senior at st. john fisher university in new york and was on a study abroad program in southeastern france. in late november his mom received a call from a college liaison to say he was missing. setting up a website for people who may have seen him to come forward. not many other details have been released at the moment but you can imagine his parents' relief that he's been found and just in time for the holidays, too. >> thank you, lama, michael. we turn to the major storm sweeping its way through the country. millions in the northeast pummeled with snow, ice and rain. stephanie ramos joins us from syracuse, new york. good morning, stephanie.

>> reporter: michael, good morning. this wintry weather caused dangerous travel conditions and power outages in several regions. regions across the country. here in syracuse, you could see the snow is still falling but with the warmer temperatures it's making for a slushy commute. overnight, a massive winter storm bringing wind, snow and ice hitting the northeast. parts of new york and new england could see as much as two feet of snow. new york's governor says they are prepared as the storm moves in. >> we'll be ready for this. new york is ready as we always are but bring it on. >> reporter: in the dakotas up to four feet of snow fell. visibility on the roads poor as crews work tirelessly to try to keep up. >> oh, my god. >> reporter: that same system now hitting the northeast, responsible for an outbreak of tornadoes in the south. 58 twisters since tuesday killing at least three people. >> can we salvage that? >> reporter: homes destroyed. debris scattered in louisiana. cameras capturing this dramatic lightning strike where a tornado

lifted this home off its foundation. our rob marciano was there on the ground. >> you have been living here for 50 years. >> 50 years. i raised my children here. this is terrible. nothing -- i have nothing. >> reporter: and in st. petersburg, florida, a twister slamming into this day care with winds up to 100 miles per hour. tree branches shooting down like spikes through the classroom's roof. children left the room only seconds before the tornado hit. miraculously no one at the day care was injured. as the storm system moves out, the gusty wind is expected to remain as that cold air moves in, michael. >> all right, stephanie, thank you so much. we turn now to ginger who has been tracking the storm and we'll find out the latest from her. good morning, ginger. >> reporter: good morning. up to a half inch of ice, this

is the kind that shuts down roads. yu can see that in wintergreen, virginia, up and in the appalachia as well. mid-atlantic saw a lot up in appalachia as well still moving through the northeast. rotation of the original low back over close to minnesota. that dropped up to four feet of snow where the blizzard warnings are still up. that's in western south dakota, but it's here where the heavy rain is at the coast, and i think with the winds, could impact flights. then the heavy snow in vermont, new hampshire into maine, where we see augusta to utica, new york, under a winter storm warning. we're talking lots of snow. foot, foot and a half in some of the pink area. then, right behind it, buffalo and just south in a winter storm warning or a lake-effect snow warning for up to one to two feet, maybe even three by the end of the weekend, start of the week. lots to talk about. wait till you see how cold it is next week. >> i can feel it coming. all right, ginger, thanks so much. we turn now to the surge of winter viruses. the white house announcing americans can once again get these free covid test kits. this as concerns are growing over a strain of strep. erielle reshef is here with more on this. good morning, erielle.

>> reporter: good morning to you, cecilia. the administration is ramping up its response and its resources as covid cases spike on top of the flu and rsv and health officials are investigating that rare but severe form of strep in children. this morning, health officials warning covid infections are rapidly climbing on top of the crippling combination of viruses like flu and rsv already sweeping the country. >> our emergency department has been seeing about 170% of our usually daily volume. >> reporter: in an effort to push back against a winter surge, the white house urging people to get covid and flu vaccines, and once again rolling out free rapid covid tests. >> we have the know-how to manage this moment and that means protecting people, preventing hospitalizations and deaths. >> reporter: and with the tripledemic tightening its grip, the cdc investigating another illness. children's hospitals in at least four states from washington to texas and arizona seeing an unusual increase in the number

of rare invasive strep a cases. dozens reported so far, two children have died in colorado. >> so what we're seeing is the rise of a number of pathogens that are now coming out from having essentially been dormant over the last few years with all the mitigation efforts. >> reporter: that uptick coming as 43 states report high levels of flu-like activity. for one michigan family flu turning frightening. three of their children hospitalized with the virus. 7-year-old june admitted first. >> she had a high fever, body aches and she was lethargic. >> reporter: june's younger brother and sister admitted days later. >> this is like waking up from a nightmare a little bit and we're just so grateful that everyone is healthy again. >> reporter: it is good to hear that those children are recovery, and back to those severe cases of strep.

doctors say those cases are extremely rare, but if your child has a sore throat for more than a couple of days, seems to be having trouble swallowing, is presenting a concerning rash, has a fever or is simply not acting like themselves, it's best to talk to your pediatrician. >> so concerning because you've been reporting, others have been reporting on this shortage of antibiotics including amoxicillin. what should they do if they can't find those? >> if you're having trouble finding amoxicillin, ask if they have a chewable or pill form or maybe a different medication altogether. and we have been told that many manufacturers are trying to ramp up production but this shortage could last into 2023. cecilia. >> all right, erielle, thanks so much. the latest on the situation at the border as the flow of migrants continues to surge. local governments are being pushed to the limit. matt rivers is on the scene. good morning, matt. >> reporter: good morning, george. overnight border patrol finally managing to process the hundreds of migrants that had been waiting here behind me to try to gain entry to the united states, but officials say that lull

might not last. unprecedented scenes in el paso, some 2,500 crossings per day could be a preview of what's to come. the trump-era policy allowing officials to turn away migrants based on covid health orders could expire. >> it'll go up to about 5,000. you look at 5,000, that's 150,000 coming through in a single month. >> reporter: dhs is trying to meet the need with more temporary housing, money, and doubling transportation options to take them to less crowded border facilities. something they call "decompression." el paso officials say that's not enough. >> if they're talking about more flights, more decompression, i think it needs to come with some policy changes. i don't think we can decompress along the border if the entire border is going to see this surge. >> reporter: border holding facilities are already at or beyond capacity that forced the release of hundreds every day into el paso. local charities trying to help people like albert and his wife paola from ecuador, giving them clothes and blankets to cope with freezing temperatures. [ speaking non-english ] >> reporter: "everyone has the same reason. they're coming here to work and find the american dream." >> reporter: and the biden administration saying they will release more details about their plan to deal with this expected surge in migration early next week. george. >> okay, matt, thanks. martha raddatz will have exclusive reporting from the border this sunday on "this week." michael? now to the guilty verdict for the former texas police officer who shot and killed atatiana jefferson in her own home in 2019. jurors convicted aaron dean of manslaughter and not the higher charge of murder. chief justice correspondent pierre thomas has the details for us this morning. good morning, pierre. >> reporter: michael, good morning. a one-time police officer is now a convicted felon, guilty of killing an innocent woman he was sworn to serve and protect. this is simply a heartbreaking story.

>> verdict reads we the jury find the defendant aaron york dean guilty of the offense of manslaughter. >> reporter: guilty, this morning aaron dean, the former fort worth police officer who shot atatiana jefferson three years ago convicted of manslaughter, facing up to 20 years in prison. the case provoking simmering questions about race and policing. a black woman dead while trying to defend her own home at the hands of a white police officer. >> we don't want to have to keep coming here. why do we have to as people of color have to keep coming? it shouldn't happen. we ought to be safe in our own homes. >> reporter: the case unfolding on dean's body camera in october 2019. a call coming in just after 2:30 a.m., from a neighbor concerned about jefferson's front door being left open. >> not normal to have the doors open this time of night. >> reporter: dean taking the stand claiming he thought it was a burglary in progress and fired into the residence through a window in self-defense after he saw a figure with a gun.

>> when i saw the barrel of that gun pointed at me and i fired a single shot. >> reporter: but there was no burglary in progress, jefferson's young nephew says the door had been left open to air out the home because they had burned hamburgers earlier in the night and that the two were up playing video games. >> i just want you to remember exactly the way you do. do you remember if she had the gun up or down? >> down. >> reporter: the boy saying jefferson pulled her legally owned handgun from her purse and never pointed it at the officer. then the fatal shot. >> i saw her fall like this. >> reporter: that person, atatiana jefferson, was only 28 years old. while the jury did not convict on the more serious charge of murder, it did find that dean who never identified himself as a police officer was reckless. perhaps the mayor of the city sums it up best as saying, quote, the verdict provides a measure of justice but this case should have never happened.

the car resembling this grainy image they're now investigating captured on a gas station security camera taken around 3:45 the morning of the murders. employees at that gas station telling abc news they told investigators the car took this route heading in the direction of the victims' home, but they don't know where it went once it left the camera's view. officers believe the occupants of the elantra they're searching for have information critical to the investigation and are pleading to the public for help. >> if we get the word out there, maybe your neighbor has one in the garage they don't drive very often. maybe there's one that's just not on the registration data -- database. let us know. >> reporter: the parents of kaylee goncalves telling our kayna whitworth they also worry critical video could be overlooked and disappear. >> i asked the community if you know you have a tape, if you know that there's a recycle time and it's getting close to that, take the extra step, go in there, look for it, pull it off, i mean, we would appreciate it. >> reporter: the families searching for clues, they have

questions about the behavior of kaylee's dog that was found in the home but police say there was no indication the animal had entered the crime scene. >> if he was locked in a room i would guess that he would bark and claw and whine. >> reporter: two roommates surviving unscathed. kristi goncalves empathizing with them. >> they're victims as well. i'm sure they're terrified. >> reporter: now, as campus quiets for the holidays, kaylee's parents demanding answers. >> who can do something like this? >> where are you? who are you? >> reporter: well, more than a month into the investigation and police have yet to identify a suspect. the moscow police chief insisting they have a lot more information that they have not yet made public concerned it could compromise their investigation, george. >> okay, mola, thank you. let's bring in brad garrett. let's start out with the white hyundai they're saying those inside could have critical information. >> look at it this way, george.

when you profile a neighborhood after a murder like this, you look for things that typically are not there. in other words, neighbors' cars, you eliminate those. this white car apparently plays into two possibilities. one, it's the bad guy's car. obviously you want to find that. secondary is, they might be witnesses to something, seen somebody come in or out of the victims' house and need to locate and i.d. the person. this could be a big find or maybe a medium find. >> police are also re-interviewing witnesses. what does that tell you? >> so, george, when you interview people initially, and many times it's a patrol officer or detective or agent not directly involved in the investigation. i've done this hundreds of times. i go back to re-interview people because i have new information and i may have pictures and they have names. you can put it into context. maybe you can get additional lead. >> what do you make from news of one of the parents his daughter's death didn't match

her friends? >> i'll assume that means that perhaps she was injured more than the others. that can mean possibly two things, one, she was the target or, two, she happened to wake up and she fought the attacker and he obviously then picked up his aggression because of her actions. >> surprised the investigation is taking this long? >> no. this is one of those cases that once, george, you eliminate sort of the inner circle assuming they have done that, in other words, friends, associates, then when you get outside that circle it becomes very difficult to figure out who actually did this and what was their relationship, if any, with these kids? it may be very small. if that's the case, they're going to have to keep chipping away at leads like this white car. >> brad garrett, thanks very much. michael. we're going to switch gears now and turn to the holiday shipping rush. we're just a day away from one key deadline, and this morning, consumer correspondent becky worley joins us from the largest u.s. postal service facility in

completely normal and natural when a couple suffers a pregnancy loss to look for answers or an explanation or blame and a lot of times there is none. but we know that stress in women are built for this so if it were easy as a stressful day, a stressful life, home environment we wouldn't have any human beings left on the planet. >> i think we're having a problem with your microphone so i'll hand you that. this is a really important conversation. so you are an expert in this. what can medically cause a miscarriage? >> there are common factors that when we do find a cause for pregnancy loss, we think of, number one, you know, the embryo is not developing properly. there can be chromosomal abnormalities. that's probably the most common cause but when you look at how common this is, an estimated one

out of every ten pregnancies ends in miscarriage. the medical term is spontaneous abortion. a lot think we should rename it. 80% of these losses occur in the first 12 or 13 weeks and it is more common as women get older. over the age of 40, one in three pregnancies ends in early loss. >> those numbers are so important. you know you're not alone. this happens to so many women. when those women come to you after they've had a miscarriage, what do you tell them? >> i tell them it's a loss. give yourself time to grieve as an individual, as a couple. oftentimes the physical healing is much easier than the emotional healing but the thing that i start with and i end with is remain hopeful. that's the thing that i've learned after doing this for 20 years. >> a long journey city, good -- journey. good words. george, we throw it to you. we turn to a woman fighting to be released from prison. nicky addimando always maintained it was self-defense in response to years of abuse making a plea to be home for the holidays and juju chang following the story.
