from the cockpit of hawaiian airlines flight 35, it was heading from phoenix to honolulu and just moments before arrival it was rocked by severe turbulence. >> did you need medical personnel? >> yes we do. >> the national weather service says the flight may have cruised through a storm at 36,000 feet. >> there is no warning of this patch of air at that altitude, or it was in any way dangerous. it caught everyone by surprise. >> to make matters worse, hawaiian airlines say some passengers were not wearing their seatbelts even though the sign was on. the pilots made their dissent, eventually landing in honolulu. greeted by a team of first responders. in all, 20 people were hurt, 13 had to be rushed to the hospital. >> initially we did have a report there were critical injuries but by the time they went to the hospital those injuries were considered serious.

>> passengers experiencing everything from cuts and bruises to nausea and one person passed out. the youngest injured just 14 months old but all expected to make a full recovery. even three crew members who got hurt did not forget their duty. >> the crew did a terrific job managing what was a very difficult situation so we are grateful for that. >> sunday's incident comes one day after a mid air emergency forcing united airlines flight down for san francisco back to where it started in mexico city. the captain reported and in balance and fuel pressure, the passengers were diverted onto other flights to san francisco. >> hawaiian airlines is now working with the ntsb to investigate today's emergency, they will look at the flight data recorder to determine how much altitude the plane lost when it hurt turbulence. the airline also says it is in touch with families of some of the injured passengers to help get them to honolulu to be with their loved ones. moving to our other top story tonight, the extremely foggy skies here at home.

take a look at what we are seeing now from our live cameras, this is a lot of -- along with live doppler 7, the walls of fog hiding parts of the bay area. i am not even going to ad lib. what i see you because it's hard to determine. >> it is getting foggier across the bay area. let me give you a look at our overnight forecast, you can see that fog from the central valley which is very dense is going to spill that delta. and into parts of the east bay, the north bay -- the morning commute is going to be a challenge because of the reduced visibility. dense fog advisories in effect from 10:00 tonight till 11:00 tomorrow, visibility down to about a quarter of a mile or less. obviously these are hazardous driving conditions, we may see the fog start to clear out at noon tomorrow. meanwhile the fog is not the only thing we have to contend with weather-wise, it is going to be cold. especially in those areas where it is foggy, fairfield for example. a low of 27 in ■concord 31°.

person's car sending that person to the hospital with significant injuries. all three suspects were caught and arrested. now to the several unique celebrations we saw tonight to kick off the first night of hanukkah. the golden state warriors now have a flashy new menorah to welcome you to the backside of chase center. abc news reporter takes you around the bay area to show you how the jewish community kicked off the festivities. >> with a touch of a torch, hanukkah celebrations kicked off around the bay area sunday night. in the north bay a giant menorah was airlifted by drones for an event hosted by the chabad petaluma. and in the east bay they had a different kind of menorah, one made of cans to be donated. rob bonta recognizing the importance of this year. >> the outside, the flame of the menorah there lies hate. this gorge of anti-semitism.

our tower camera looking out over san francisco with mainly clear skies right now. it is 43 degrees here in the city, and in oakland 36 degrees. san jose 44, you can temperatures are dropping rather significantly in some areas. toward san francisco.he east bae the temperatures are dropping down to 33 degrees right now in santa rosa, 34 in livermore, fairfield at 41 degrees. they will all be in the 30's very shortly. here's the view from a rooftop camera looking across the quiet embarcadero, these are forecast features. it will be cold overnight and dense morning fog which is developing already in the central valley beginning to push through the delta. increasing clouds and cool tomorrow, and winter weakens officially on wednesday. at that point the weather will be turning warmer. here is her overnight forecast starting at midnight, notice how that dense fog from the delta into parts of the interior bay

valleys and parts of the north bay is well into solano county. at 5:00 tomorrow morning as the commute gets underway, visibility will be significantly reduced. that fog is going to linger there into the late morning hours plus we will have high clouds so it is going to be a great day. so dense fog advisory is in effect right now and will remain in effect until 11 a.m. tomorrow. visibility expected to be down to a quarter of a mile or even lower, hazardous driving conditions obviously. overnight lows dropping into the low 30's valeo, concord, livermore. it just below freezing. down to 27 in fairfield, and most locations around the bay shoreline will see lows in the mid 30's. we have a spare the air alert tomorrow, air quality will be poor in the north bay and santa clara valley. nonetheless high temperatures will be moderate for this time of the year, a little on the chilly side. down to the low to mid 50's in most locations and antioch will
