for quite some time. dense fog divides arrays are in effect until 11 a.m. you have issues in the north bay and east bay livermore closely, brentwood, santa rosa, petaluma down to two .5 miles. until 11 a.m. for the valleys of the east bay, areas shaded in gray, we will linger for much of the morning. outside, a bit of fog. partly sunny skies. we will talk much more about the air quality coming up in a few minutes. kumasi: you want to plant some extra time for your commute and expect slow traffic. we are seeing fog across the bay area. lena howland is driving around dublin. what are you seeing there? lena: starting to see a little more fog in the dublin area. we are off of the 580 right heading eastbound toward the

livermore area, where traffic is definitely picking up. a lot of people waking up to quite a bit of fog this morning. it is patchy in some areas. you might experience a little more in some cities and a lot more in other cities. this is something many drivers will want to be prepared for before they head out the door this morning. the national weather service has placed a dense fog advisory in the east bay interior valleys this morning until 11:00. you might be running into visibility 0.25 miles or less. this is what it looked like on highway four. make sure you are using low beam lights, as high beams will increase the glare. >> it has happened before, then it would burst. this morning, i noticed in the kitchen sink, the warm water was barely coming out. lena: that

jobina: the committee is wrapping up. it has worked nearly two years after a mob stormed the u.s. capitol, to disturb t confirming president joe biden become the next president. some charges include conspiracy to defraud the united states, obstruction of a official proceeding, and a rare charge accusing the former president of inciting and insurrection. >> donald trump, the president of the united states, spurred a mob of the enemies of the constitution to march down to the capitol to subvert american democracy. jobina: of course, trump has denied any wrongdoing. the criminal referrals against him would be largely significant but are largely symbolic. the doj is not obligated to act on referrals and it is conducting its own investigation into the insurrection. reggie: abc news will have live

coverage of the january 6 hearing today at 10 a.m. you can see it live wherever you wash abc 7. kumasi: for the second day in a row, passengers have been injured when an airplane hit turbulence. united issued a statement saying the flight encountered unexpected turbulence while on route to houston. upon arrival, three staff members and two passengers were met by medical personnel and taken to hospitals with minor injuries. this comes after people were hurt on a hawaiian airlines flight from phoenix to honolulu yesterday. >> the turbulence is really, really rocky. >> could we have medical personnel at the gate? >> yes, we do. kumasi: the turbulence was so sudden, some people were lifted from their seats. some people had head injury, cuts, bruises, and at least one person lost consciousness. they are all expected to be ok. the plane was also heavily

damaged. >> there is internal damage to the aircraft, some panels that have been unbuckled, that will need replacing. the aircraft is undergoing a thorough inspection that will require maintenance work before it can be taken out again. kumasi: there were scattered thunderstorms in that area, but it's not clear at this point if that's what caused the turbulence. the ntsb is investigating. analysts tell abc news this kind of incident is wide pilots worn passengers to keep seatbelts on when they are seated, even if the seatbelt lights are off. reggie: big flames building overnight. firefighters got several calls about an explosion in the area. the building was in flames. it took about 30 minutes to get under control. there are no known injuries and the cause of the fire is under investigation. three people are in custody this morning after leaving police on a lengthy chase in a stolen vehicle.

police say it started around 5 p.m. yesterday, when the three men approached a woman at a store in fremont, taking off with her vehicle. officers were able to quickly track them down using surveillance cameras. fremont police say that's when his high-speed chase started on interstate 680. the suspects crashed into another person's car, sending that person to the hospital with significant injuries. all three suspects were caught and arrested. kumasi: today, a bay area politician will try again to decriminalized the use of certain psychedelics in california. he will be announcing the new legislation at 10:00 this morning. the bill would allow certain residents to carry, consume, and share substances like mushrooms, lsd, and ketamine. another state had this rejected by a state a simile back in august. reggie: if you feel confused about whether or not you should get the bivalent covert shot or not. the white house says it is simple. get it. they are urging everyone to get

another shot if it has been six months since her last one. this comes as health officials say there has been a 40% increase in covert hospitalizations since thanksgiving. >> we have seen increases in the last two winters. in colder, drier air, the virus spreads more efficiently. people are gathering, as they should, because it is important together with family and friends. that combination is what is driving the increase. reggie: despite the advice, americans have been slow to adapt to the new booster. according to the kaiser family foundation study, 44% of adults receive the original vaccine series and say they don't think they need a booster. kumasi: today, we will find out if elon musk will resign as ceo of twitter. yesterday, he asked a pole asking twitter users if he should step down and abide by the results. the poll closed overnight. more than 17 million people voted.

drew: we are looking at visibility right now because we do have a dense fog visor in effect for the north bay and east bay. be aware, you may see some abrupt changes in your visibility this morning. it may be clear in one area, then you hit the fog and have some issues. drive slow out there. future weather showing it is with us for much of the morning, even through 10 a.m. still seeing that fog lingering in spots. close to lunchtime, we will see the fog lift. that will slow the warming process today, mainly low to mid-50's for afternoon highs. 52 in the city, 54 in oakland, about 50 for concord and vallejo. the three day forecast showing dense morning fog right now. partly sunny tomorrow. as winter officially arrives wednesday afternoon, it will bring more more weather with it. that trend continues for the holiday weekend. we will show you the numbers, coming up in a few minutes.

reggie: this morning, a desperate search off the coast of thailand for nearly three dozen sailors. the worship they were on sink in stormy weather. 106 people were on the ship. 33 are still missing. strong winds capsized the ship, leaving them unable to maneuver or pump water flooding in. those same wins are aching it hard for rescue teams to search the water. kumasi: good news for many american tourists stranded in paris. they have been closed amid political unrest in the country. we spoke to a san francisco couple who was advised to stay in the hotel because that was the safest place for them to be.

several smaller airports are still close this morning, though some are still operating at limited capacity. dismiss is less than one week away. you are looking at what's typically one of the biggest travel corridors in the country. this is interstate 80 in emeryville. aaa is estimating nearly 113 million americans will be traveling for the holidays starting later this week. nearly 10 2 million americans are expected to drive to their destinations. air travel is closing in on pre-pandemic numbers, with seven point 2 million people catching flights. transportation experts say the busiest travel days will be this friday, december 23, and monday, january 2, as people, come. reggie: let's talk about holiday shopping. long lines and parking to pay, and high record inflation. our reporter went out to see what is making the holiday cut for the shopping list. reporter:'twas six nights before christmas and all across the bay area, the malls were stirring.

>> i got some glassware for my dad. i got my mom some leggings that are nice. >> just clothes and bath bombs. reporter: the holiday shopping list is a staple this year. at the very bills are the pandemic, inflation, and fears of a recession. >> i definitely do feel like prices have gone up and everything feels more expensive. >> we never know what's going to happen next year. another pandemic, inflation, or some other thing might come up. the are definitely saving. reporter: retail stocks tanked across the board on thursday, after a worse than expected november retail cells report was released. inflation may be on most people's mind, but the national retail federation still predicts that holiday sales in november and december will increase 6% to 8% from last year. what about online shopping? >> online is horrible. it feels so easy to access. i just want to buy everything. it is so bad. reporter: the supply chains have

thick right now in santa rosa, around .25 miles visibility. watch these areas very closely because this fog is going to linger for much of your morning. you can see 580 and highway around discovery bay. some thick fog quickly developing. fog in chile. temperatures around 40 in the city, 38 in oakland, 37 in san jose. under up out there. the fog will lift around 11 a.m. partly sunny skies, low to mid-50's, below average for this time of year. if you're traveling today, limited weather worries. all in all, it is pretty quiet across much of the lower 48. if you're traveling, you should have little to no problem adding to your destination. overnight tonight, back here at home, cold in the 30's and 40's. curtly sunny skies as we go about our monday. we will watch early tomorrow

reggie: california's most famous mountain lion has been euthanized. people around the area used to call him the brad pitt of mountain lions because they said he was handsome and also very calm, at least usually. he was 12 years old and was the face of an international effort to save california's threatened puma population he was found in griffin park in los angeles most of the time. over the weekend, he was put down after getting hit by a car. an ecologist says they will use him to study other animals in the area. >> he has been an incredibly

interesting animal. we have gotten a lot of really great information from him. he has persisted in the smallest range that has ever been recorded for an adult male mountain lion. he has been a really interesting animal. the truth is, he will be part of our studies forever, forever a an important part of our mountain line studies. i am sure we will be looking at his data for years to come. reggie: most mountain lions live to be 10 years old. at 12 years old, he lived a long life. many people may be talking about the world cup final. it is been called the best ever. >> [applause] reggie: this was a scene at chief sullivan's bar in north beach, after argentina beat france in a thrilling finish. the match started at 7 a.m. yesterday. that did not stop people from getting up and out. many french fans gathered at the french are in broadway in san francisco. more people bundled up to watch

outside for a lot of you this morning. so down when you hit the roads. lena howland is live in dublin with the latest conditions. lena: good morning. we are in dublin this morning, heading on 580 westbound, where we are definitely seeing some fog this morning. we are already seeing the traffic start to slow down and take their time heading through this far, just to be safe. this is something drivers will want to prepare themselves for as they head out the door this morning. but so far, the good news is that we have not run into any major problems or slick parts of the roads just yet. i want to go now to what things look like late last night over on highway 4 in martinez, where visibility was nearly zero in some spots. a dense fog advisory in the east bay interior valleys this morning up until 11 a.m. that means it is possible he might be running into visibility 0.25 miles or less in dense fog. we know keeping warm is top of

mind for many in these chilly conditions. after checking in on folks up in novato, we found one hardware store averaging three shipments of space heaters a week just to keep up with demand. >>some little cabins that i want to keep warm, so we are getting little space eaters to put in each one of the cabins, keep the pipe warm, and also keep us warm because it is pretty chilly. lena: a couple of reminders for commuters heading out on the roads this morning. aaa says to make sure you are using low beam lights in this fog. high beams will increase the glare. also make sure you are scraping off any ice from windshields this morning. i saw quite a few as i was heading out for work this morning, so make sure that those windshields are clear and you are increasing your following distance between yourself and the car in front of you. for now, reporting live in dublin, lena howland, abc 7 news. reggie: thank you. we have all been feeling the winter chill recently, especially in the eastern part of the country.

it will get a lot colder. temperatures will hit record breaking lows in the south. the weather prediction center in maryland is calling it the coldest air of the season. kumasi: this morning, a state of emergency in el paso, texas over the rolling crisis at the border. el paso is making the move as several states turn of the supreme court to stop the trump era immigration policy from ending. jobina: 19 republican-led states are appealing to the supreme court, arguing title 42 should remain in place. the rule allows border patrol to send migrants back to mexico while cases are heard. it is set to expire wednesday and is expected to trigger an influx of migrants at the southern border. the white house says they have a plan in place to handle the increase, but some republicans argue if title 42 ends, there will be chaos. here is one el paso county city mayor who says what they have already seen. >> we have seen 2500 in the past six or seven days paired we can only imagine what it be doubling the flow.

jobina: border patrol says it has already seen 2.7 million at the border this year. that is the highest on record. if the supreme court decides to take up the case, it could delay the end of title 42 until after a decision has been announced. reggie: thank you. the former ceo of cryptocurrency company ftx is set to appear in a courtroom and the bahamas. sam bankman-fried is expected to agree to extraditions to the u.s. he is charged with eight counts of fraud and conspiracy. he is facing years behind bars and he is accused of defrauding customers and investors. his girlfriend is reportedly working with prosecutors. kumasi: the ohio senator says the senate is trying to work out how to regulate the crypto market. >> banning it is very difficult

because it will go offshore. who knows how that will work. this is a complicated, unregulated pot of money. sam bankman-fried was at one point worth, they said, $30 million. he is now at less than zero and may face jail time. ftx is not the whole issue. that is what the focus started with our committee, but we really brought into it. kumasi: last week, several senate committees held a hearing on the collapse of ftx. reggie: gas prices continue to go down. they are now their lowest level in 15 months at here in san francisco, people are paying way above the average at four dollars 51 cents. but that is a lot better than what we saw earlier this year paired the national average is $3.14. if you live in san pablo, you may want to head over to one gas station who is selling gas for $2.99. kumasi: one boebert chain is

shut down. the cofounders confirmed the could -- the closure in an email to employees last month. they were temporarily closed because employees refused to work. those employees claimed the company had retaliated against them for discussing union rights. the original store that launched the nationwide business opened in 2011. a popular bar and concert venue in oakland is closing for good. they shared the news on instagram, saying they will permanently close on january 1. the last scheduled event is a new year's eve party. all 2023 shows will be moved to other venues. the club opened in 2015, quickly becoming a popular spot for local and national acts, but the club has really struggled during the pandemic. reggie: now to some unique celebrations of hanukkah. the golden state warriors now have a flashy new menorah on the backside of the chase center. we take you around the bay area to show you how the jewish community kicked off the festivities. reporter: with a touch of a

torch, bay area celebrations kicked off sunday night. in the north bay, a giant menorah was even airlifted by drones for an event. in the east bay, the city of alameda had a different kind of menorah. one made of cans to be donated out to the community. the california attorney general there recognizing the importance of this year. >> outside of the flame of the menorah, there lies hate, there lies the scourge of anti-semitism. we will always stand with and for and by the jewish community. reporter: in union square, one rabbi helped kick off one of the biggest menorah lighting's in the country, an event with historical significance both within and outside of san francisco. >> this is the first public menorah outside of israel 47 years ago. reporter: as many families around the bay area begin hanukkah celebrations, many are also aware of rising anti-semitism. in the past year, antisemitic

kumasi: welcome back, everyone. a complete stranger giving the gift of life this holiday season. as our anchor reports, they gave a kidney to someone who lives more than 1000 miles away. >> i'm doing good. i'm up. reporter: while it is not evening christmas year, roy mcintosh has already received his favorite gift, thanks to the generosity of a stranger. >> perfect stranger, perfect match, and a perfect guide. reporter: this father of five did not even realize his wife, out of desperation, posted a prayer plea in a facebook group, writing to please pray that god sends a tight be kidney donor to him. that miracle soon arrived in her facebook message inbox from more than 1500 miles away in texas. a woman named heather schaefer replied, i was touched by your message.

i know this is crazy because we have never met, but i am be positive and healthy. if you are still looking for a donor, i would love to talk with you more about it. >> i just thought it was a really normal thing to do. of course i will give my extra, healthy kidney. reporter: that prayer of a transplant was answered. two months later, they met in person, roy leaning in for a hug of gratitude. >> oh my gosh. reporter: he is now working out three times a week, back in charge, and starting a support group to bring awareness to renal failure. heather's christmas wish is that people hearing the story about roy and her can be inspired. roy is forever grateful for this lifelong bond that started with a kidney, but now radiates joy right from his heart. reggie: that's amazing. now, let's talk about "avatar."
