>> this was such a great moment, and in new york city -- i don't know if you guys saw it. people were packing every restaurant in new york, people outside the restaurants were looking in through the windows and watching the tv. i love that cecilia vega -- >> i'm still shook. what a game. >> some great moments. also ahead, this might be your last chance. we will have the need to know deadlines to get your gifts delivered on time. plus the latest with the holiday storm on the move. we'll begin right now with severe turbulence rocking a flight from phoenix to honolulu on sunday. at least 20 passengers were injured, several hospitalized. let's go right to our transportation correspondent gio benitez who's tracking the latest on this one. good morning, gio. >> hey, cecelia, good morning. it's incredibly rare for a flight to end up with injuries like this on a hawaiian airlines flight and the severe turbulence happened shortly before landing in honolulu but passengers said they were not warned. overnight, a terrifying ordeal in the skies over hawaii. >> hawaiian 35, do you need medical personnel at the gate?

>> yes, we do. >> reporter: sudden and severe turbulence bouncing passengers up and down, several hitting their heads. ceiling tiles cracked and bent. several onboard stunned and among the injured a 14-month-old child. one passenger temporarily losing consciousness. at least 20 injured, 13 of them taken to a local hospital after the plane made an emergency landing. three flight attendants who were moving around the cabin were among the ones others treated in the terminal for cuts to the head and bumps and bruises. >> no fatalities. hopefully folks don't have to stay in the hospital too long and can get back to their loved ones or if they're on vacation. >> reporter: the airbus 330 was carrying 287 passengers and 10 crew members. >> it look liked a tornado went through the space. >> reporter: we spoke with a

passenger on the flight when the chaos began just 30 minutes before landing. >> i thought i don't think the plane will withstand this. i don't think we're going to make it. >> reporter: passengers say they weren't given any warning when they were headed into the turbulent skies but the seat belt signs were on. >> this is the very reason the pilots constantly warn you from the cockpit to keep your seat belt fastened because, if we hit something like this, you can go flying. >> you often hear pilots recommend keeping that seat belt on just in case you hit turbulence. no doubt about it, rebecca, this was a scary one. >> absolutely terrifying. also, a good reminder. thank you, gio. now we turn to the brutal blast of winter and the holiday storm on the move with six days until christmas. alex perez is in chicago with more. good morning, alex. >> reporter: good morning, rebecca. we're waking up to temperatures in the teens here in chicago, and much of the country will get a taste of this bitter cold this week. now the artic chill will slide

all the way down into parts of the south, but this artic plunge will be felt across much of the nation. in parts of the midwest and the northeast many are already coping with over a foot of snow that fell over the weekend and in some places over 2 feet of snow and in the west in cities like seattle they're already dealing with a new storm that's bringing snow and creating treacherous travel conditions. and now a cold blast is moving in as we head into the christmas holiday in the plains and the upper midwest. some spots will see windchill temperatures that feel like 60 below zero this week and it's important to remind people when te temperature is this cold frostbite can begin to set in less than ten minutes. a little good news, the temperatures are expected to be much more moderate next week. whit? >> all right, we'll take that, alex. thank you. now to a potentially explosive move from the house select committee investigating january 6th expected to refer criminal charges, including

insurrection, against former president donald trump as they hold their last hearing this afternoon. chief washington correspondent jon karl is on chill with all of it. jon, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, whit. the january 6th committee will use that last meeting to present its final conclusions and recommendations. those recommendations will include recommended criminal charges, multiple criminal charges against donald trump for his actions related to january 6th and the attack on the capitol and his effort to overturn the presidential election. the january 6th committee plans to take a dramatic step this morning in its final hearing, recommending donald trump be charged with multiple crimes related to the attack on the u.s. capitol, and the events leading up to it. among the crimes the committee believes donald trump may be guilty of -- obstructing an official proceeding, defrauding the united states, and insurrection. after more than a year of

investigation, over a thousand sworn depositions and ten televised hearings, the central conclusion of the january 6th committee has been perfectly clear. >> the central cause of january 6th was one man, donald trump, whom many others followed. none of this would have happened without him. he was personally and substantially involved in all of it. >> reporter: the committee has made the case donald trump abused his power as president to try to overturn the 2020 presidential election, inciting his supporters with lies about election fraud. >> we're going to walk down and i'll be there with you. >> reporter: the committee may also call for action against others, too, including republican members of congress who defied committee's subpoenas. but prosecuting trump or anybody else is entirely up to the justice department which has already been conducting its own investigation for months, now overseen by special counsel jack smith. >> such an appointment underscores the department's commitment to both independence and accountability in

particularly sensitive matters. >> reporter: the committee will also release its final report later this week. today a lengthy, over one hundred pages long executive summary of that report will be released. whit, we can also expect to see thousands and thousands of pages of transcripts from all those interviews, the committee has done over the course of its investigation. >> jon, what if anything is the committee planning to do about lawmakers who snubbed subpoenas? >> reporter: there were at least four lawmakers who defied subpoenas from this committee, including the republican leader kevin mccarthy. i'm told the committee is likely to refer to the house ethics committee those lawmakers to look into whether or not they should be held on ethics charges.

of course those are all republican lawmakers. as you know republicans take over control of congress on january 3rd. >> jon karl, our thanks to you. we'll have complete live coverage of the january 6th committee's final public meeting at 1:00 p.m. cecelia? we're going to turn now to the border as cities on both sides are bracing for a surge. title 42 is set to expire this week. mireya villarreal has the latest from el paso. >> reporter: overnight, el paso city leaders pushing to prepare for a looming influx of migrants as temperatures continue to drop. >> there's not enough shelters to house what we could possibly see in the next few days. we want to make sure we have the ability to set up temporary shelters, sheltering systems. >> reporter: title 42 a health policy used by the trump administration during the pandemic to expel migrants without allowing them to request asylum is set to expire on wednesday. governor abbott predicting chaos during an interview with abc's martha raddatz. >> totally unacceptable. it's going to be catastrophic not just for texas, but for the united states of america.

>> reporter: for months the city of el paso has seen an influx of migrants, 2,200 on average each day this month alone. shelters are at capacity, and transportation out of town is limited forcing many of esgrant sidewalks prompting local business owners to help. >> at the end of the day these are just human beings. regardless of how we feel politically you have to put kindness first, humanity first. >> reporter: transportation and shelter are the main issue in el paso. you can see that right behind me. people sleeping on the sidewalks, waiting in line to get a ticket here at the bus stop. now right now, a number of republican-led states are asking the u.s. supreme court to step in. if the chief justice believes the entire court should hear this case, he could put a pause on title 42 expiring, giving both sides of this case time to prep.

rebecca? >> mireya, thank you. we turn overseas now and the anti-government protest raging in iran where officials have arrested one of the country's most well-known actresses, charging her with spreading falsehoods after she criticized the regime for executing protesters. lama hasan has the latest. good morning, lama. >> reporter: good morning to you, rebecca. the iranian regime arrested taraneh alidoosti on saturday while she was at home, and reportedly in front of her 9-year-old daughter. she was taken to iran's most notorious prison. this country state media claim she was spreading false and distorted content and inciting chaos. it's hard to overstate the significance of this. taraneh alidoosti is one of iran's most famous actresses. she's known for starring in the oscar winning movie "the salesman." her arrest comes just a week after she defiantly voiced her support for the demonstrators to her 8 million followers on instagram, condemning an execution, a man who was killed

in connection with the protest. she also brazenly posted a picture of herself without a hijab. holding a piece of paper saying, women like freedom. that's a slogan of the protesters. her instagram page was quickly shut down. it's clear that the regime is dealing with one of its most serious challenges. so it's now changing tactics detaining high-profile critics to try to scare the protesters. whit? >> lama, thank you. we turn now to the so-called tripledemic. new concerns as we get closer to holidays. at least 45 states plus washington, d.c. and puerto rico now reporting very high or high levels of flu activity. the spread of covid is increasing in california and in the northeast, while rsv levels are still high in some places. erielle reshef has the latest. >> reporter: this morning, the tripledemic looming with holiday celebrations in full swing. some hospitals across the country pushed to the brink by that crippling combination of covid, flu and rsv. >> our emergency department has been seeing about 170% of our

usual daily volume. >> reporter: 15 million flu infections and counting. this the earliest and most severe season in the decade. with hospitalizations climbing to 150,000, 9,300 people have died from the virus. and while covid cases are leveling in some parts of country areas in the northeast and states like california are still facing increased spread. in l.a. county, hospital bed occupancy is at its highest level since the pandemic began. the white house urging vaccination is the best defense against both covid and the flu. >> the updated vaccine is essential for keeping people out of the hospital. so we're making the case that we're at a point where it's safe to gather but you still have things to do. >> reporter: studies show the new by

>> i like sports announcer whit. >> you like that? >> yeah. >> it's fun. we have a lot more ahead including the michigan mom accused of cyberbullying her own daughter and then trying to frame a classmate. but first, though, the unsolved murders of those four college students in idaho. as the investigation enters its sixth week with a possible new clue, new audio and video of two victims captured just hours before the killings. kayna whitworth has the latest. kayna, good morning. >> reporter: whit, good morning. so while authorities are analyzing that new video, i spoke with the parents of kaylee goncalves who say they now have her belongings and her car has been released to them. they say they're holding out some kind of hope that maybe the vehicle's 360 cameras caught something that can help provide answers. this morning, new video possibly shedding light on what took place just hours before the four university of idaho students were murdered in their beds. abc news obtaining this surveillance footage that shows kaylee goncalves and madison mogen walking down the street

with a man who police have confirmed is not a suspect. their conversation caught on camera. >> what did you say to adam? >> i told adam everything. >> reporter: the footage submitted to authorities as part of the investigation. kaylee's family lawyer telling abc news they have seen it and they don't believe the adam referenced is a suspect. >> what were they talking about that night? were they concerned about anything? had anybody bothered them? these are all sort of leads police will have to look at. >> reporter: less than a block away, kaylee and madison seen at a food truck at 1:40 a.m. while police have ruled him out as a suspect, they have expanded their search for the occupants of a 2011, 2013 white hyundai elantra like this, captured on a gas station security camera taken around 3:45 a.m. the morning of the murders.

gas station employees telling abc news they told investigators the video shows the car speeding in the direction of the murder sce scene. but still more than a month after the murders, officers asking the public for more help. >> if we get the word out there, maybe your neighbor has one in the garage they don't drive very often, maybe there's one that's not on the registration database so let us know. >> reporter: now i also spoke with the university provost who tells me he remains hopeful that students will return to their in-person learning in the spring semester. the campus getting ready to shut down at the end of this week for the holidays. rebecca? >> so many people looking for answers on this. kayna, thank you. now we turn to disgraced ftx founder sam bankman-fried, expected to agree to be extradited to the united states as early as today. he'll face charges in the crypto company's collapse. that's the first step in what's likely to be a long legal battle. this morning, disgraced ftx founder sam bankman-fried

expected to agree to extradition from the bahamas. the former crypto ceo accused of stealing billions from customers and investors was denied bail last week and previously declined to waive his right to challenge extradition, but after a few nights in the jail, labeled as inhumane in a 2021 state department report for its poor nutrition, inadequate sanitation and inadequate medical care sources tell abc news he could drop any opposition today. if that's the case, a u.s. government plane will bring him to new york where he faces eight counts of criminal fraud and charges from the s.e.c. >> he's realized that fighting extradition is a fool's errand in the bahamas. the argument would have to have been they got the wrong sam bankman-fried, and that's just a ridiculous argument to make. >> reporter: the 30-year-old who once ruled the crypto world partnering with celebs like steph curry and tom brady,

allegedly purchased lavish real estate including at least 19 properties in the bahamas valued at more than $120 million and made nearly $40 million in political donations before it all ended amid reports of misuse of ftx >> this is one of the biggest financial frauds in american history. >> reporter: in an interview with our george stephanopoulos earlier this month bankman-fried denied knowing that customers' funds were being improperly used. >> did you know that these funds were being funneled to alameda? >> i did not know there was any improper use of customer funds. >> now, that nearly $40 million in political donations is putting a lot of pressure on the politicians who received the campaign contributions. many say they'll donate what sam bankman-fried gave them. cecelia, it's going to take a long time to get all this money back, if ever. >> rebecca, thanks so much. we'll turn now to a terrifying crash for one couple whose car plunged more than 250

>> reporter: they say a driver sped past them, forcing them to swerve off course. >> hitting at least two trees, the back took most of the damage and just rolling right on top of like the roof of the car and then just remembering just being upside-down and click seat belt. how do we get out? >> reporter: desperate for contact, the couple finding chloe's iphone 14, but stranded with no cell service. >> he found it away from the car in a little thing of mud and immediately the phone said crash detected. >> reporsor:fecontacting authorities via satellite. chloe says within 30 minutes the search and rescue team arrived. >> they had the coordinates that were in the initial emergency notification from apple. >> reporter: deputy sheriff paramedic said apple's sos feature makes it easier to locate off-course victims. >> unless somebody would actually have seen them, there's no way they would have been able to notify and initiate the

bizarre case of a mother accused of cyberstalking her own daughter. the michigan woman is now facing felony charges and trevor ault is here with more. trevor, the motive is still a mystery this morning. >> it is, cecelia. there's no confirmed motive, but some theories being floated out by prosecutors including where they're calling it cyber munchausen by proxy to make their child feel bad so the child comes to them for comfort. whatever the cause these allegations are extensive and incredibly alarming. >> even when we realized it wasn't a kid, we weren't expecting that it would be the parent. >> reporter: this morning, a startling story out of michigan, prosecutors accusing a mother of catfishing and harassing her own daughter. authorities allege kendra licari secretly sent her daughter and daughter's boyfriend thousands of hateful months. >> whether messages to her daughter or some of her daughter's friend the digital footprint was insane.

>> reporter: according to prosecutors, her daughter first received these messages in early 2021, with licari and the daughter's boyfriend's parents then reporting to officials at the school which then referred the situation to law enforcement. the messages allegedly continued. investigators claim this spring they discovered that licari was the source when they traced the messages back to her. >> when they informed us later in the spring they were suspecting it was possibly her, it shocked all of us, i think everybody involved. >> reporter: authorities alleged that she used software to hide the origin of the messages. she used several numbers and area codes, even allegedly trying to make it look like her daughter's classmates were behind it all. >> it would shield her and cloak her identity, her digital idti. eventually we were able to see her ip address was popping in and out right before and right
