cases, children and teens being threatened to expose online. police had arrested this man. san jose police believe he wa involved in this case of a san jose boy who as a result died by suicide. abc 7 news has decided to show you this image of the suspect because police are looking for additional victims. >> type of closure to your family. >> i am beyond grateful that it happened but deep down i would rather have my son. amanda: 17-year-old ryan who believed the person he was messaging with was a girl. instead, cyber criminal who demanded more and more money.

ryan left behind a suicide note describing how embarrassed he was for himself and his family. his story has made national headlines and other families have reached out about the message making a difference. >> the one thing that has helped is knowing ryan's story. they went to their parents and talked to them and said, help. amanda: professor dr. plante talks about the adolescent mind with impulse control still under development. >> when it comes to self-harm, they do not necessarily have the brakes that some older, more mature people have to push those feelings aside and to find more thoughtful and productive coping strategies. amanda: the fbi says there have been more than 7000 reports of online sextortion this year.

for urgent matters, you can call the national suicide crisis hotline. dan: one conclusion revealed tonight during a virtual meeting about refinery ash that rained down in martinez. the town hall tonight addressed health concerns following this incident on thanksgiving. for three hours, the martinez refining company released tons of spent catalysts. the affected area was larger than first reported. one neighbor called out the refinery for failing to report the incident for two days. >> you kept quiet because you didn't think it affected our community. we cannot trust you to decide about the effects of this community. you must report any release so we can protect our families. dan: the refinery apologized and tonight for the first time spoke publicly about the incident. >> we are taking this incident very seriously.

and brought together various city departments including san francisco police and neighbors. all of them say they are committed to cleaning up the fillmore. a meeting at the third churches in san francisco, people taking time out of their holiday schedules to discuss teams like this one, rising homelessness and crime in the fillmore district. >> it seems as though no one really cares and that there is very little interest in trying to correct the problem. >> speakers at monday's event talked about incidents they have had their involving the homeless. >> when i go to the area, i am always concerned about my personal safety and also about the fact that my car is in a parking lot that is infested with people engaged in criminal activity. tim: monday's meeting, hosted by community leader reverend amos

brown, was also attended by representatives from several city departments. all of them saying they are committed to working together to find solutions. an admirable goal, but one that will come with challenges. >> the san francisco police department is short about 45 officers. this is unprecedented. tim: those solutions will have to work for everyone, both local residents and fun housed. >> compassion because a lot of the people claim we are compassionate about, but we've led people to their own destructive devices and we let people cause harm to others. that is not compassion. tim: reverend brown hopes to have several other meetings the topic. >> we throw a lot of money to homeless issues, yet we are not seeing any of the benefits. tim: we did reach out to safeway for a comment but have not heard back yet for a comment. dan: thanks a lot.

a jury in l.a. has convicted harvey weinstein of rape. today a jury found him guilty on three accounts of rape and sexual assault. this includes accusations by california's first partner, jennifer siebel newsom. court paperwork shows jurors are still trying to determine with -- if that chart is within the statute of limitations. >> breaking through their fear if something could happen to them if they spoke out against mr. weinstein, s of my clients for their courage and sacrifices. to win justice. dan: the jury will continue deliberating tomorrow. weinstein was convicted on similar charges in new york in 2020. ama: developing news on the winter covid-19 outlook. a fast spreading outbreak in china has experts making a grim

the director of programs at the unity council paid he says he is optimistic about the plan which calls for finding ways to prevent people from becoming homeless in the first place. that includes a campaign to encourage more landlords to accept government housing vouchers and to build more affordable apartment buildings. the program also calls for equity programs and creating local advisory councils made up of people who have actually experienced homelessness. velasquez says that this could provide a cohesive strategy for counties in the bay area. >> this would create alignment across specific counties and we have a goal to work towards whereas in the past, different counties or cities have had different goals. reporter: the framework from the white house comes the same day that the u.s. department of housing and urban development released new numbers about lenesscrs t.

expericing homelessness nationwide, just under half a million people, has been steady since the start of the pandemic, but in california the numbers have risen. on any given night, half of all unsheltered homeless people in the country are in california. the data also shows that san jose has the highest rate of unsheltered homeless of any major city in the country. alameda, solano, napa are high on that list. homeless advocates say the disparity of numbers in california than other states comes down to housing and the lack of it. ama: the first lady introduced the white house's first permanent minority celebrate hanukkah. the event included the lighting of the menorah under traditional song and prayer. >> today we must and forcefully, anti-semitism, all forms of hate and violence

it will take some time before you start to notice it. that me show you live picture from our sutro tower camera. it is hazy and there is fog out there. visibility is low in parts of the bay area. definitely watch out. as we look at live doppler 7, high clouds are coming in with mid-level clouds. the system that is sending us the clouds is moistening up the atmosphere, but not all of this is actually at the ground, so it is mostly evaporating. i will tell you where we may see a few showers in a moment. temperatures right now in the 30's and 40's, not far from where we were earlier this afternoon. these were the highs. most of you were in the 40's other than the coast and south bay. 42 degrees in livermore, only 41 in campfield, 44 degrees in napa. it is chilly in other parts of the country as well. as we take a look at the national picture, the pacific northwest was heavy snow along with heavy rain across the north

-- east coast. as we take a look at the temperatures, wine is 15 great falls -- - is that arctic plunge that will be coming in and dropping the temperatures. we have windchill advisories and watches going up for the plane states. 43 degrees in minneapolis tomorrow. you are looking out a lovely view of san francisco, cloudy with areas of fog overnight. a chance for showers in the north bay and warmer weather is going to follow on wednesday. the first thing tomorrow morning, a lot of cloud cover. and then a chance of a few showers in the north bay primarily between 2:00 and 4:00 p.m. i would have the umbrella handy. it is not going to be a wet day. rainfall totals, most of you with nothing.
