not too thinking, but you will notice reduced visibility. the worst spot is down to four miles. that's not terrible. let's keep our eye on this. with the additional cloud cover, we're actually off to a warmer start compared to this time yesterday. who would have thought low to mid 40's would feel so much better than the 30's for so much of this month? here's a live look outside. the golden gate bridge right now. a blend of sun and clouds throughout the day. into the afternoon, we have chances of drizzle in the north bay. poor to moderate air quality. we'll talk about the air quality coming up in about nine minutes. >> thank you, drew. we'll start with the breaking news. more than two dozen aftershocks have been felt after a 6.4 i think in humboldt county overnight. it hit just after 2:30 in the small town of ferndoyle. jovina has been tracking this all more than long, what we're hearing from officials. >> the humboldt county office of emergency services has confirmed that there is wide spread damage

across the county. we've seen some of the minor issues, like this home where items were thrown on to the floor. there's also serious damage to local roads and bridges. there are reports of gas leaks, even one that may have started a fire. take a listen to reporters from the abc affiliate in eureka describe the moments following the quake. >> i don't know about you, but for me, the power just went out as soon as the most severe part of the earthquake hit. >> my lights were going on and off, and i was like, this is it, i assume we're going to lose power, and we did unfortunately. i wasn't prepared. i didn't have any portage chargers. luckily was given portable chargers. goes to show, always good to be prepared. >> the power is currently out to more than 70% of the county. pg&e has set off its emergency response plan, and crews are responding to gas and electric hazards. officials say this earthquake did not trigger a tsunami warning, and we will tracking

perspective of the amount of covid spread happening across our area right now, just days before christmas. unfortunately for parents and healthcare workers, that's not the only thing they're up against. they are facg a tripledemic with cases of flu and r.s.v. spiking all at the same time. but with christmas now just five days away and plenty of holiday gatherings scheduled, doctors we spoke with recommend that if you do choose to gather, wear a mask, get vaccinated, and also get tested before you gather in order to keep others safe. >> many families have brought back covid testing for gatherings. again, it's not the be-all and end-all, but it's something you can judge infectivity at the time. >> the doctor says not to worry, there is no need to cancel any holiday plans. he's encouraging folks that do test positive for covid to seek

before an internal funding bill expires on friday, or the government could shut down. the senate will take it up first before it goes to the house. the first vote could happen as soon as tomorrow. >> the committee investigating the january 6 insurrection is urging the justice department to charge former president trump in the attack on the u.s. capitol. we're tracking what comes next at the live desk. >> the final session marking an end to the expansive probe into the riot, including former president trump's role in what happened. the committee ended their investigation by referring multiple charges against trump, and some of his closest allies to the justice department. they include obstruction of an official proceeding, conspiracy to defraud the federal government, conspiracy to make a false statement, and assisting or aiding an insurrection. >> nothing to be of greater betrayal of this duty than to assist an insurrection against the constitutional order. >> the criminal referral carries no legal weight, but committee

members say that their decision is a way to document their views on the record. attorney general merrick garland will make the real call on whether or not to prosecute on these charges. the official report is expected to be released to the public tomorrow. trump continues to deny any responsibility for what happened that day. >> thank you. people living near san francisco's fillmore district are demanding change. at a meeting last night, many residents wanted their voices heard on a range of issues, including crime and homelessness. reverend amos brown hosted the meeting, and representatives from several city departments were also there. many people speaking specifically mentioned the safe way at gary and webster as a problematic spot. >> i'm always concerned about my own personal safety and also about the fact that my car is in a parking lot that is infested with people who are engaged in criminal activity.

>> san francisco's police chief says they're committed to finding solutions. they're short staffed by more than 500 officers. we reached out to safeway for a comment, but haven't heard back. >> the ash that rained down recently may have been worse than initially thought. our virtually town hall meeting last night addressed health concerns following the incident on thanksgiving. during the meeting, the martinez refining company revealed it released 20 tons of spent catalyst, a dust containing heavy metals. officials also revealed the impacted area was larger than first projected. one neighbor called out the refinery for failing to report the incident for two days. >> kept quiet, because as you say, you didn't think it affect our community. we can't trust you to decide if a release affects the community. you must report any release so that we can protect our families, full stop. >> the refinery apologized and spoke publicly about the

next two years. >> i think that this, if anything, could create an alignment across different counties. we have a specific goal we can work forwards. whereas in the past, different counties or cities have had different rules. >> the plan also calls for programs to keep people from becoming homeless in the first place. plans to address equity issues since homeless people are disproportionately people of color, and for creating local advisory councils of made up of people who have actually experienced homelessness. >> a day after twitter users voted in favor of elon musk stepping down as c.e.o., musk is changing another policy. he says in the future only twitter blue subscribers will be able to vote on company policy changes. that's the paid subscription service. it's still not clear if musk will be stepping down at twitter or who his replacement might be. holidays are basically here, and the san francisco fire department wants to remind you that safety is their top priority, and it should be all of our priorities.

matchup your pg&e bill could be going up, and it's because of the wildfires across northern california the past few years. according to "the mark are you news," pg&e is trying to recover costs that came from wildfire mitigation and feeling with other catastrophes. it's asking state regulators to approve extra monthly charges for customers that could start in the second half of next year. the increase would be about $8 for the average customer who gets the power and gas from pg&e. a bay-area politician is trying to decriminalize the use of certain psych dell i can in california, the second time he's trying this. the state senator of san francisco has reintroduced a bill that would allow residents to carry, consume, and share substances like mushrooms, m.d.a., l.s.d. and ketamine.

two teen sisters have been safely located by oakland police. they were previously missing and last seen near walnut street and 98th avenue in oakland. the biden administration has until today to respond to the latest developments at the border. title 42, which is a controversial trump-era immigration policy, is staying in place for now. the supreme court chief justice john roberts issued a temporary hold, which is set to expire tomorrow. the legislation allows migrants to be removed from the u.s. without letting them request asylum. republican-led states filed an emergency appeal to keep that in place. the white house is asking congress for $3.5 billion innd e influx of asylum seekers and says it's already an historic number of department of homeland security agents at the border. >> they've deployed processing capabilities to el paso, and 23,000 agents are working to

secure the southern borders. >> city officials in el paso, texas, called a state of emergency, saying shelters are overwhelmed with migrants. california schools are about to embark on an ambitious program to help students make up for our pandemic learning loss. the expanded learning opportunities program would add three hours to the school day and 30 days to the school year. >> the basic logic behind the extended learning opportunity program is that there were preexisting gaps, both opportunity and achievement gaps, that existed before the pandemic. the pandemic greatly exacerbated those, and the student groups which suffered the most were traditionally high-need students. these funds would be deployed to help those students who are from low-income families, who are english learningers, or who are foster or homeless youth. >> some of the students may be put intoll cssr get hands-on tutoring. the state will leave it up to school districts to decide if

texas, that killed 21 people at a school, but the school district just failed a key security test. the superintendent says an undercover inspector posed as an intruder and was able to access a school cafeteria in a security you'd hit month. the auditors tested three schools, and the one in particular was accessed by a door with a faulty lock. >> he could see l.a. people were loading and unloading, but it was locked. but he also tugged it, and it came open. >> the shooter at robb elementary entered through a door that was supposed to be locked. security tests are being conduct statewide with hundreds already completed. the other two uvalde schools passed with all exterior schools securely locked. >> volunteers are hard at work donating hundreds of their hours to a major bay area food bank that is struggling to keep up with demand. second harvest of silicon valley helps provide food to over 50,000 people in santa clara and san mateo counties.
