♪ dan: a powerful earthquake strikes in the middle of the night. >> i was sound asleep and all of a sudden i heard my wife yell, earthquake. the whole room was shaking back and forth. dan: humboldt county hit with a magnitude 6.4, the largest quake the state of california has seen in three years. the bay area with the familiar feeling from afar. >> i have got ptsd from earthquakes. i think about it all the time. dan: overnight alerts proving successful before the shaking begins. >> we sent out various alerts to places in california. this is the biggest alert we have sent out so far. dan: tonight, recovery for the rural towns to the north. power only now starting to come back online. >> we are alive.

we have got almost all our animals and it is what it is. >> plans across the roof, trains stopped, piles of glass. it was traveling out and it was incredible. dan: what a day. thank you for joining us. i am dan ashley. ama: and i am ama daetz. governor newsom is now declared a state of emergency to help speed up the cleanup response. dan: the epicenter of the quake was in the pacific, about 15 miles from fortuna. but those damaging effects are being felt far beyond that. ama: the quake killed two people, injured a dozen more, and it is likely that number will rise. about 7000 pg&e customers were without power. as of right now there are s large pockets of neighborhoods with no gas, electricity, or

heat. humboldt county has issued a boil water advisory for the county. dan: a reporter has a boots on the ground look at what people are dealing with. >> we are at city hall in rio dell which is the only place in town with power because of a generator keeping the lights on. there is no power and no water in this city right now. earlier tonight, the city council declared a city disaster declaration. for the people who live in the security -- the community, health cannot come soon enough. cleanup is underway after the earthquake struck off the coast overnight. two people died and several others were injuredhe earthquake through items off of shelves onto the floor. jessica bonz described how it felt like. >> it felt like i was in a

tornado. it completely moved in circles. it was pretty terrifying. it was loud. reporter: much of the damage in the small city of rio dell where several buildings have been red tagged as too dangerous to enter. the balcony collapsed off of this resident's home. >> we heard a big boom. reporter: and at the nearby napa auto shop, all of the windows shattered. the owner spent his morning cleaning up the glass and covering the damage with wood. inside the store, he showed us even more damage. >> you couldn't walk through the aisle. my side door is inaccessible. liz: it is a similar scene at the liquor store where bottles were shattered everywhere. >> wine and everything, glass. liz: more than 17,000 people

lost power across the county and rio dell has no water after the quake caused the water main to break. the mayor came to pick some water bottles up for her elderly neighbors. >> we told neighbors who have physical issues that cannot come down here and get water, i can come pick some up. liz: the earthquake also caused damage to the historic ferndale bridge. you can see the railing is bent. this is the main road into the town of ferndale. across the street, people lined up to get gas. nathan byers says he needs gas to power the generators for his fish tanks. >> the fish tanks cannot get heat and all of the fish freeze up and die. liz: nathan had never felt anything like it. >> it was pretty violent. i had wheels on my bed so i was shaking left and right. the biggest one i have ever felt. liz: the police chief tells us

the city has now run out of bottled water that they were giving out at their distribution city. there are working to get more, working with the red cross and hope to restock by tomorrow morning. they did have to turn people away tonight. the police chief has been giving people blankets. it is a cold night and with no power and water, it will be a long night -- and day -- ahead for the people of rio dell. dan: liz talked one-on-one tonight with the chief of the rio dell police department. he has lived in the city for 32 years and has never experienced an earthquake like the one that happened. >> this one felt a little different. it was a hard hit roll and it was scary. dan: even during all of the calls emergency groups groups bonded -- groups responded

the police chief was able to give blankets to those without power. ama: since that original earthquake, we have counted dozens of aftershocks, including one in the middle of a local news conference with officials. take a look. >> aftershocks also. uninvited guests. ama: that look stops. let's bring in abc 7 news meteorologist sandhya patel. dan: still lots of things popping up tonight. sandhya: we have been seeing numerous aftershocks tonight. i want to show you the earthquake that was 6.4, as you mentioned west southwest of ferndale this morning. since then we have seen dozens of aftershocks. this is all in the area known as the mendocino pacific projection. where those three plates meet is what we saw this earthquake.

it was a strong earthquake. since then we have had at least 24 reports of aftershocks. the largest magnitude was 4.3. the usgs is saying there is a 6% chance of aftershocks larger than eight -- than a the aftershocks were weaker around the bay area but felt all the way down towards the bay. dan: let's check back now on the pg&e live outage map. most power was supposed to be back on, not so much the case tonight. thousands still in the dark. pg&e does not expect power to be restored until 3:00 p.m. tomorrow afternoon. in the bay area, we have had our fair share of sizable earthquakes. we have seen four manning to five or greater in the bait -- magnitude five or greater in the
