we begin with 100 million americans bracing for that massive pre-christmas storm. depending on where you are -- -- you could get anything from blizzard conditions to heavy rain along with dangerous winds and following that, the deep freeze. alex perez is there in chicago. it feels like zero degrees. good morning. >> reporter: hey, good morning, cecilia. yeah, the feel like temperature here in chicago right now is about zero degrees but it will be -- feel balmy compared to the end of the week once that cold arctic air moves in and now that cold arctic chill will impact the christmas holiday. already windchill alerts across much of the country. in parts of the plains the temperature expected to be 40 below zero. the feel like there, a brutal 60 below zero. first to that deep freeze, the plains and midwest bracing for a

few inches of snow to more than a foot of snow followed by gusty winds that could create blizzard-like conditions here in chicago and in a number of other cities in the storm's path and even when this storm is done with the midwest the storm will continue marching east and creating problems for the holiday weekend there. rebecca? >> wow, alex, get inside. get warm. get a cocoa. more on the timing of the cold. cheryl scott from wls in for ginger. good morning, cheryl. >> reporter: this is dangerous. a life-threatening cold and windchill alerts across most of the country. coast to coast from the northern plains all the way down to the gulf and the deep south. take a look at blizzard warnings now in effect for parts of minnesota. this bitterly cold air will start pouring in to the country tonight sliding all the way to the south. for instance, denver today high, 47, overnight dropping to 16 below, and that is a 60-degree temperature drop in hour hours. dangerous cold with windchills well below zero, near 40 to 50 to 60 below across the northern plains and places like texas,

some of the coldest air in 30 years. and with this storm rain, snow but very high gusty winds. this will impact travel thursday into friday especially up and down the northeast corridor from philadelphia up towards boston. whit? >> all right, got to prepare, cheryl, thanks so much. the storm also threatening to cause chaos on some of the busiest travel days of the year. let's get to transportation correspondent gio benitez with what we can expect. >> we are already seeing issues. it's only wednesday morning. take a look at the numbers now because we're seeing more than 200 flights canceled. more than 500 delays. now the timing of the storm could not be worse. all of the major airlines say toorrow and friday are the busiest travel days and, like cheryl said, that's exactly when the storm is hitting. and we're talking about the country's busiest airports -- denver, chicago, detroit and right here in new york which is home, of course, to three major airports. the national weather service is already telling people in chicago and parts of indiana and ohio to reconsider any travel tomorrow. now, airlines, they are offering

waivers for free changes right now so you may want to make changes early because with so many full flights, rebooking may be really tough this year. whit? >> a question a lot are asking, could the weather lt. impact the delivery of our christmas presents? >> for sure. cargo flights are just as effective as passenger flights. for parts of the country where weather is not an issue, here are the deadlines to send out gifts. today is the last day for u.p.s. second day air and fedex express saver. tomorrow, last day for u.p.s. next day air and fedex two-day services. then friday is the absolute last day you can use the usps priority mail express and fedex overnight services. wait until saturday you'll have to drive it yourself, whit. >> you're like that if you're my relatives. cecelia, over to you. we turn to that developing story in washington. ukrainian president volodymyr zelenskyy leaving his country for the first time since the

start of the war and in just a few hours he will be face-to-face in the oval office with president biden. then he will address a joint session of congress and, of course, our congressional correspondent rachel scott has the latest on this. rachel, of course, security at an all-time high for this one. >> reporter: yes, cecilia, good morning. and this trip has been shrouded in secrecy because of those security concerns, but in just a few hours ukrainian president zelenskyy is expected to arrive at the white house where he will meet with president biden in the oval office before holding a joint press conference with the president in the east room. then we are told he's expected to travel to capitol hill where he will address a joint session of congress. a senior administration official making it clear that this is about sending a message to russian president putin as well as the rest of the world that america will stand with ukraine for as long as it takes and the timing of this is significant. it's the first time that zelenskyy has left ukraine since russia invaded his country 300 days ago. he's just back from visiting the front lines of this war meeting with troops in bakhmut, which is considered the epicenter of some

of the bloodiest fighting in this war. there he warned the enemy is increasing. he said, while he's grateful for the support from the united states, it's not enough. cecelia? >> he's asking for more. president biden is expected to make a big announcement, the u.s. finally giving ukraine these patriot missiles they have long been asking for. >> reporter: these air missile defense systems are advanced. they're considered the most effective in the world. congress is also considering sending an additional $45 billion in aid to ukraine but today zelenskyy will be addressing a divided government. republicans will take the majority in the house in just a few weeks and republican leader kevin mccarthy has warned that his party will not be writing a blank check to ukraine. cecelia? >> rachel, thanks so much. rebecca? >> high stakes there. cecelia, thanks. now to former president trump's tax returns on the verge of being released after a house committee voted to make then public. this moment has been years in the making. there have been calls for this for years and our chief washington correspondent jon karl has the latest. good morning, jon.

>> reporter: good morning, rebecca. donald trump was the first elected president since richard nixon not to voluntarily release his tax returns. now congress after a years' long court battle is about to do it for him. in a late night vote congressional democrats took a step, donald trump fought long and hard to prevent. >> mr. chairman, i have 24 yeas, 16 noes. >> reporter: they voted to publicly release six years of the former president's tax returns in the coming days. >> this is about the presidency, not about a president. >> reporter: the returns to be released are from 2015 to 2020. the committee will first take time to redact sensitive information. but committee chair congressman richard neal revealed that donald trump's returns were not under audit during his presidency as he repeatedly claimed. >> and you'll see that my tax

returns have been under audit for a long time. >> reporter: republicans set to take over in congress in just weeks, denounced the decision as a dangerous precedent. >> every american taxpayer who may get on the wrong side of the majority in congress is now at risk. >> reporter: this isn't the first glimpse at trump's tax returns. years' worth of trump's tax documents o revealing in 11 of those years atsoever, soth. i havllus laws to my benefit. i have brilliantly used those laws. >> reporter: although it will take at least a couple of days for his tax returns to actually be made public, the committee did release a report on the tax returns revealing that he was not under audit for the first two years of his presidency. that, despite the fact that he said he was under audit and despite the fact that the irs has a policy, a long-standing

policy that presidential tax returns must be audited, they were not. >> and jon, as you just noted, republicans take control of the house in less than two weeks. will democrats take action before then? >> reporter: nancy pelosi, still the speaker of the house, says that they will vote on a bill requiring the presidential taxes be audited by law. unclear whether or not that will actually get passed and will pass the senate before this congress expires. >> but we know you'll be following it each step of the way. thank you, jon. whit? overseas now to those headlines out of afghanistan. two americans who are being held captive have been released by the taliban as we learn the regime is now barring women from studying in universities. our chief foreign correspondent ian pannell has the latest. ian, good morning. >> reporter: yeah, good morning, whit. that's right, the two americans heading home expected to be reunited with their loved ones soon. although the administration, the biden administration isn't releasing names, the new york

based committee for the protection of journalists said that american film maker ivor shearer and faizullah faizbakhsh had been picked up by the taliban in august. they had been picked up where they were filming in the same area where al qaeda leader ayman al zawahiri was killed in a u.s. drone strike. the committee saying their sources on the ground told them the taliban repeatedly called them american spies. no news yet, however, on whether the afghan producer has been released. whit? >> all right, ian. and on a different topic here, the taliban are now extending their ban on girls and women in education. >> reporter: yeah, that's right. angry scenes we've seen in afghanistan already this morning as women across the country were blocked from entering uiversities. there are reports some male college professors walked out in solidarity. we know at least four male college professors in kabul have resigned. the taliban had already banned girls from high school, even told women it's better for them to stay at home.

the white house and human rights groups condemning the latest restrictions as indefensible. all the worst fears of what would happen to women and girls appear to have come to pass. whit? >> raising much more concern. ian, thank you. cecelia? we turn to that covid emergency in china. the nation abruptly ended its severe zero covid restrictions and now we are hearing of outbreaks and fatalities. foreign correspondent james longman is tracking the latest developments on this. good morning, james. >> reporter: good morning, cecilia. china's zero covid approach seems to be backfiring badly. it was able to keep infections comparatively low, but after last month, it's been abandoned. now infection rates are soaring. there's never really been a clear picture from china, but a new counting system is reporting just 16 new covid fatalities across the country in the last month with no reported deaths yesterday. so there's real skepticism about these numbers. there are images now emerging of hospitals overwhelmed, health services struggling to cope, and clearly now the potential for millions of new infections. now, more than half of the over

driving unprecedented demand. >> it's so stressful. it's everything all at once. >> reporter: families from new york to colorado frustrated as they face those empty shelves. retailers like cvs and walgreens now limiting the amount of acetaminophen and ibuprofen products customers can buy at a time to prevent stockpiling. at this compound pharmacy in california, pharmacists say they are able to make the medication inhouse if needed. drug manufacturers and the fda stopping short of calling this a widespread shortage insisting instead there are constrained supplies and sporadic outages. >> the manufacturers are producing 24/7, but also trying to distribute product in an equitable way so that one part of the country doesn't get all of it versus another. so that is why they've not been able to meet every retailer's order completely. >> reporter: doctors say generic brands are just as good at treating symptoms and can be less expensive.

from medical emergencies during the quake and 12 people injured. the epicenter, about 200 miles north of san francisco. >> as we felt here there's been over 50 aftershocks since the initial 6.4 earthquake. >> reporter: governor newsom declaring a state of emergency with thousands still without power in humboldt county. >> damage to homes, damage to critical infrastructure and lifelines, so water, power and gas lines. >> reporter: heavy structural damage widespread throughout the rural humboldt county. in ferndale this bridge caving in. homes knocked off their foundation as residents start to pick up the pieces. >> sleeping on the couch and i heard this banging. my whole front porch fell off. >> reporter: in eureka, items thrown off the shelves at this hardware store. but the hardest hit area in rio dell. the water system down and it could be at least a day before it's restored.

down as head of twitter? i will abide by the results of this poll. of the more than 17.5 million voters, 57.5% said yes, it came days after he suspended the accounts of multiple journalists for allegedly violating their doxxing policy for sharing tweets that shared publicly available data about his private jet. >> you dox, you get suspended. end of story, that's it. >> reporter: but the next day he reinstated all the accounts. since the billionaire took control of the company in a $44 billion deal in october, he sparked backlash and worry for the company's future making immediate and drastic cuts to staff, overturning content moderation rules and tending tesla's stock funding. some say those sinking shares may be the real reason he's stepping back from twitter. rebecca? >> andrew, thank you. yeah, shares are certainly sinking down, 65% so far this year. tesla's the money he has, twitter is the money he's paid, $44 billion. he needs to raise more. can't run all these companies at one time. >> something to watch as the new search for the new ceo plays out

as well. >> throw your hat in the ring, whit. >> i don't think so. we want to turn to the massive find we've been talking about for giant -- for banking giant wells fargo ordered to pay nearly $4 billion for violating consumer laws including how it handled mortgages and auto loans affecting millions of customers. trevor ault is here with that and, trevor, a lot of people will get some money back. >> that's the plan and a lot are owed money. wells fargo has faced a series of major scandals that included multiple finds. here they have shattered their own record with the largest fine ever handed out by the consumer financial protection bureau, $3.7 billion in fines and refunds to settle a vast array of banking violations over the past decade. we're talking about charging illegal fees and interest on auto loans and mortgages, incorrectly taking overdraft fees, even wrongly repossessing some borrowers' cars and homes and in total they impacted 16

million customers who are all owed refunds. now, in a statement their ceo says, quote, we and our regulators have identified a series of unacceptable practices that we've been working systemically to change. we have made significant progress over the last three years and are a different company today. now, of this $3.7 billion, 2 billion is supposed to be refunded to customers and if wells fargo owes you a refund you don't have to do anything. they are required to let you know. now, the consumer protection bureau director says payments should not be read as a sign that wells fargo has moved past its long-standing problems or that the work here is done. so we may get more money out of this just yet. >> thanks so much. we turn to that holiday travel trouble. say that three times fast. the massive winter storm on the move threatening to impact the travel plans of so many americans, tens of millions of them and gio benitez is tracking them all. you have some tips on how to save if we need to make some changes. >> i don't want to toot my own

horn but you'll want to pay close attention to this story. chances are you'll need these tips over the next few days. there are some things you can do right now to prepare. this morning, that holiday storm wreaking havoc on travel plans for the 102 million americans traveling by road and air with airlines already canceling and delaying flights even before the storm hits but there are ways to make sure that travel scrooge doesn't win out. first things first, travel waivers that could help you move your existing flight in order to beat the storm. airlines are letting you make free changes, but you've got to act fast. >> it could even mean that fair increases will be covered if you choose a different flight. but that's for specific routes and dates so you need to make sure you're checking with the airline you're flying to see what their specific policy canceled, you are entitled to a refund if you choose not to take a rescheduled flight.

but, if you want to try to hop on another flight, timing is critical. to avoid long customer service phone calls, try calling an airline's international number, but you may already be able to make the change yourself. >> automation is your friend. use the app or the website that you booked your travel in and go ahead and see what your rebooking options are. you can call, but those wait times are going to be long. >> reporter: if your cancellation has nothing to do with the weather and is the airline's fault like a mechanical issue, you are entitled to a hotel and meals if your new flight is much later. it's a part of your bill of rights as a paying traveler. >> generally speaking, airlines are required to provide refunds if they cancel the flight and no reasonable alternatives are offered. that said, the airlines want to help you get where you need to go, so they're going to work with you, especially this week. >> reporter: and you also want to go ahead and check and see if there are any credit cards you

taped to index cards but this one, instead of like a lot of recipes will use sweetened condensed milk, i'm using meringue. my family loves it. here we have egg whites and cream of tartar. you are going to slowly stream and sugar. huge secret for a flossy meringue. slowly incorporate the sugar as you go in. >> if i did it with my 4-year-old she would just dump it all in. >> get it to stiff peaks. beautiful, glossy creation. >> this is the tahini. the secret ingredient. >> yes, whenever you buy it, make sure you stir it up. like any natural nut butter even though it's a -- >> can you put it in the microwave? >> it's a little tough. if you get it too hot it can be shredded coconut. if you want to add in the tahini.
