felony drug charges. the district attorney's office a student's where where the pills could be deadly. some carried narcan encased they over the -- in case they overdosed. he encouraged teens to share contact information to get more buyers, those that did overdosed did survive. >> some accused the city of san francisco of making homelessness a crime is gearing up for a court fight. tomorrow there is a hearing on a possible preliminary injunction to stop san francisco from conducting sweeps of encampments while the case proceeds. the lawsuit claims city agencies violate on house to people's constitutional rights during the sweeps by finding them, arresting them, removing them from the site, destroying belongings. one woman shared her details of her express with the sweeps. >> they do not take inventory and they do not care. everyone treats you like you are beneath them.

23 as we get the new year. join us to talk about the new trend is sophie, director of alta media at sf standard, a partner of abc7news -- multimedia at sf standard, a partner of abc7news. when was the last time san francisco had this many registrations in a single month? >> it has been a lot of combos before the pandemic when we last saw numbers like that. we look back to march 2020 when everything public -- plummeted. 2021 everything was up and down. since june we passed that 100 mark in terms of these registrations, these are intent, that people want to open a bar or a restaurant. it has gone up and up and up all the way to the peak of 120 and october. we are anticipating this exciting wave in 2023 of new bars and restaurants.

dan: that is encouraging because we lost so many during the pandemic. 120 are opening, that does not mean they're opening us restaurants, just part of the process, correct? >> that is correct, abc 7 has covered, we have covered how difficult it can be to open a restaurant, bar, small business in san francisco. that has not gone away there is a lot of permitting hurdles in red tape. we do not know of all 120 will open. just that we have seen that rise suggest that there will be a bunch more in the new year. dan: 120 may be ready to try in the very least. restaurants rely on foot traffic, but that simply has not relied on the financial district, the -- are they mostly in neighborhoods? for our businesses opening downtown once again? >> that is a great question, my colleague know what did this reporting.

the answer to this question is pretty surprising. a bunch of them were downtown, financial district, that surprised us, sources we talked to said a lot of soon-to-be business owners are probably getting into 5-10 year leases that are good deals because of how slow things have been in the area. they are hoping for the long run, thinking eventually they has to be -- there will be a revival, when they are, i will be there with my restaurant or bar. dan: ready when the opportunity strikes. you have reported on how challenging it is to operate a small business in the city. people comparing -- complain about. the redtape and bureaucracy. does this thing -- does this mean that things are more business friendly? >> maybe? it is tricky to say. a lot of our sources say are backed up for them.

dan: a currency mogul is back on -- cryptocurrency mogul's back on u.s. soil today released on $250 million dollars bond. karina: there is a bay area -- connection, he is under house arrest at his parents house. authorities have seized his passport and given him an ankle bracelet to make sure he stays put until he goes to trial. reporter: the former ceo of collapsed cryptocurrency exchange ftx, released on $250 million dollar bond and placed on house arrest as parents california home. following the first court appearance at manhattan federal court since being extradited from the bahamas. federal prosecutors announced 8 criminal charges that included fraud, and spirit see, money

laundering -- conspiracy, money laundering, and campaign-finance violations. he diverted billions of dollars to his hedge fund that he used to fund his lavish lifestyle as well as risky personal investments and political donations. in an interview last month he denied knowing ftx customer funds were being improperly used. reporter: did you know these funds were being funneled to alameda? >> i did not know there was any improper use of customer funds. reporter: two former colleagues, caroline, and gary, who cofounded ftx pled guilty to federal charges and are cooperating with prosecutors. the u.s. attorney for southern district of new york urging others to come forward. >> if you participated in misconducts at ftx for alameda knows the time to get ahead of it. we are moving quickly and the

all in support of her family. we first met daisy in november of 2021 when she and her family of four bought this tenderloin apartment home. before the pandemic another couple lived in this three bedroom apartment and paid half the rent. that couple moved out during the pandemic leaving her family with the entire bill. when they moved out it was just daisy, her husband and her two boys. three-year-old matteo and 13-year-old miguel. daisy primarily speak spanish and an indigenous language native to mexico. she only speaks some english, she spoke to us and spanish as you pairs dinner for two boys. >> it is expensive to live here. she is paying more than $3000 in rent. it is tough to buy things for the kids because she had to say for rent. saving got easier for daisy, and financial burdens less stressful, a month before he met her family.

in october, of 2021 she received three or $50 of unconditional cash, the first of a pilot program. >> it is a great help, she said, she is able to buy food for her family without worrying if she can afford it. her youngest is growing fast. she is able to make sure she has the basics thanks to the unconditional cash. reporter: she and her family were selected to be one of the 13 families enrolled in the basic and compile a program. the san francisco nonprofit has been around for more than 100 years, focused on safety net programs for families that are on housed or on the brink of living without shelter. the program offers wraparound services like food assistance and re-childcare. her youngest -- free childcare. her youngest is enrolled here. >> a little bit of money can make a big difference for the family. they are using it for basic needs. reporter: she is the executive director for compass family

services. she said the basic income pilot was made possible by $35,000 grant by wells fargo. we followed daisy and her family for the six months of the program. >> one of the words they used when describing how the funds impacted them, is the in call. the idea that they are so stressed by finances, the idea that you can reduce that tension and stress and support the family calm feels like it is certainly a good use of $350 a month. reporter: along with the 6 payments of unconditional cash, 13 families enrolled received wraparound services like access to family counseling and money management classes. much-needed help when you are one unexpected bill away from

homelessness. >> they cannot pay the rent or they cannot buy the groceries. >> how are you? >> good. reporter: that is exactly the situation they found themselves in when we checked in halfway to the program. we spoke over zuma's entire family recovered from covid -- zoom as the entire covid recovered from covid. her family was kept afloat by paid sick leave, still sick the husband cannot work is part time job so money was tight. daisy said she was not sure how she would purchase groceries without the. extra cushion from the program. she is grateful for the assistance and is already saving what you can. playing -- planning ahead for when the family will no longer have the added help. reporter: tomorrow we will show you how the rest of the program turned out for daisy and her family. you can stream it right now on

done for centuries. to talk about tamales and differences between regions and countries, we welcome her. it is so great to have you with us. we have some of them with us. tell us what goes into making a great tamale. >> hello. thank you for having us. what you are holding is a guatemalan tamale. what you need to start the process of tamale is the maza that is made fresh here every day of the year. not just christmas. what you are seeing is a tamale wrapped in banana leaves and then we wrapped in paper so they hold together. they are very tasty. it is a process. everyone that you see coming to get maza year-round this is what they do. to make tamales. dan: is different on the region, talk a little bit about the traditional mexican tamale.

what makes it unique and special? >> i have a couple here, this is a chicken tamale wrapped in corn husk. what makes it unique, it is a lot of work. you need to make them by hand, primarily. you wrap them and unwrap them. you have to take the corn husk of. a lot of people think you can eat it, but you cannot. it needs to be removed prior to eating them. it is filled with different meats. traditional ones are lard in it. we make vegetarian ones as well so people can enjoy vegan. dan: guatemalan tamales, you sell those as well, how are they in different from mexican tamales? >> there are different because they are wrapped in banana leaves. the maza is different.
