>> universal basic income has been getting momentum across the country and in california over the last 10 years. it addresses income inequality through monthly cash payments to families need extra help. race and social justice reporter julian glover followed one family to see how this money changed their lives. >> from chocolate to sugar cookies, daisychained loves making sweet treats at this bakery in the mission. the early days and long hours standing can be tiring but it is all in support of her family. we first met daisy in november of 2021 when she and her family of four called this tenderloin apartment home. before the pandemic another couple lived in the three-bedroom apartment and paid half the rent. that couple moved out during the

pandemic leaving her and her family with the entire bill. when they moved out it was daisy, her husband and her two boys. a three-year-old and 13-year-old. daisy primarily speaks spanish and indigenous language native to mexico. she only speak some english so she spoke to us in spanish as she put her dinner for her boys. it is expensive to live here she said. she is paying more than $3000 in rent. it is tough buying angst for the kids because she has to save for rent. saving got easier and financial burdens less stressful. a month before we met her and her family and i told her of showing 21 she received $350 of additional cash, the first of six monthly checks as part of a guaranteed income pilot program. it is a great help she said. she is able to buy food for her family without worrying if she

can afford it. our youngest is growing fast. now she is able to make sure he has the basics thanks to the unconditional cash. daisy and her family were selected to be one of 13 families enrolled in the basic income pilot program run through compass family services. the san francisco nonprofit has been around for more than 100 years focused on safety net programs for families on housed around the b brink of living without shelter. it offers services like food assistance in free childcare. daisies youngest is enrolled here. that is how she heard about the program. >> a little bit of money can make a big difference for the families. families are using these funds for basic needs. >> executive director said the basic income pilot was made possible by a $35,000 grant from wells fargo. the nonprofit survey the families before, during and after the program concluded. we followed daisy and her family for the six-month of the program. >> one of the words they used

when they were describing how the funds impacted them was it increased their calm. the idea that families are so stressed out by their finances or lack of finance is and that x everything. just the idea we could reduce that tension and stress and support the family's calm feels like it is a good use of $350 a month. >> of unconditional cash the 13 families enrolled in the pilot program received wraparound services like access to family counseling and money management classes. much needed help when you are one unexpected bill away from homelessness. >> the situations they are facing is they can pay their rent or they can buy she's. -- buy groceries. >> is exactly the situation daisy and her family found themselves in when we checked in halfway through the program. we spoke of resume as the entire

after the carlos correa deal and apparently it felt because of an injury he had before he was a major league her in before the giants won the 2014 world series. espn reports the giants backed out because of the broken fibula he suffered when he slid in a minor-league game in 2014. he was apparently in san francisco with his family ready to go to the press conference on the giants postponed rings. espn said he had plans to go on a cable right and househunting. instead early in the afternoon the giants told him and his agent they would not go ahead with the 13 year contract. the mets deal happen when they were here in the bay area. >> where was carlos when they told him they were calling off the press conference? >> we were all in the hotel in san francisco. he had his parents there, his brother, his wife's parents. it was certainly a roller coaster for the family.
