weekend in california. it is a much different story to the east. hundreds of thousands already without power this morning as a dangerous winter storm is sweeping from the midwest to the east coast. more than 750,000 outages have been reported so far and extreme weather conditions are forcing airlines to delay or even cancel flights. make sure you are checking your flight if you are flying for the holidays. lena howland live at sfo, where passengers are already feeling the impact. lena: that's right. good morning. the timing of the storm could not be coming at a worse time as millions of americans are expected to pack our nation's airports. at sfo, that is no exception. on their busiest travel day of the year, as you can tell from this steady stream of traffic right behind us and that drop off area. 130 6000 travelers are expected to come in and out of this

airport today but be prepared for delays, cancellations and long lines. this amid one of the most treacherous holiday travel seasons the u.s. has seen in decades with temperatures plummeting 50 degrees fahrenheit in some areas. forecasters warning of an impending bomb cyclone that could make conditions even worse right before christmas, causing more than 5000 flights to be canceled nationwide and about 10,000 delays so far. new york, detroit, seattle, chicago, boston, denver, ndc are the most affected -- and d.c. are the most affected areas. it made for a nightmare travel day at sfo yesterday, hit hard by cancellations and delays. >> we tried like dozens and dozens of different airports. i called the airline and they tried but there is like no availability until after christmas. lena: most airlines are waving

change fees and offering travelers the option of choosing new flights to avoid the bad weather. however, it may be later than expected, as you just heard from that traveler. i do want to give you an update on what conditions are looking like in terms of cancellations and delays right now at sfo. as of just a few minutes ago, so far, they are already experiencing 44 canceled flights today at 5:00 in the morning and 41 delays so far. that's a very important reminder to check your flight status before heading out the door this morning. live at sfo, lena howland, abc7 news. reggie: how about the roads? here's a look from our camera in emeryville. it certainly looks totally fine. if you're driving this afternoon, it could be a very different situation. analytics company called inrex

safety of the public, specifically vulnerable victims minors here that we've talked , about that are being peddled poison, fentanyl. amanda: investigators said armendariz sold drugs at locations throughout downtown los gatos, including the school's parking lot, and even at a nearby church. he charged with four counts of is being felony drug sales after the group of students overdosed and survived. victims as young as 15 years old. >> that's a high school sophomore. that's somebody that's just short of having a driver's license. it's somebody that usually has a little bit of pocket change and can figure out how to, you know, acquire drugs. or maybe they're just trying to self-medicate because they've got other issues on their mind." amanda: this is not the first time gatos high has made headlines. in october 2021, a student's mother was arrested, and accused of throwing alcohol-fueled sex parties for underage teens. we've reached out to the school district and the school about

the recent overdoses and are waiting to hear back. deputy d.a. lee said students were aware the pills could be deadly. some even carried narcan in case they overdosed. >> what does that signal to you? >> i think that shows that this is seriously an epidemic. sen. cortese: it does call into question whether or not they were deceived, or whether or not they knew that they were ingesting fentanyl in the first place. and to the extent that the young people know about it, they're still taking that risk, or they're encouraging their peers to take that risk. it's a big problem. amanda: reasons why state sen. cortese introduced senate bill 10, which aims to expand education and prevention efforts in schools, also to increase access to narcan and more. the overwhelming message from officials, one pill can kill. >> unlike other type of controlled substances, one time experimenting might be your last time. amanda: in los gatos, i a amanda del castillo. reggie: earlier this year, santa

kumasi: the house committee investigating the january 6 attack on the capital has released its final report sing former president donald trump engaged in a multiparty conspiracy to overturn the election. the report comes after the panel interviewed more than 1000 witnesses and held 10 hearings over 18 months.

scrambling to head home for the holidays this morning. thousands of flights are delayed or canceled as a major winter storm is blasting the u.s. if you are on the way to sfo, flightaware is reporting at least 40 cancellations in and out of the airport. drew: california just a handful of states with quiet weather for the holiday weekend. a warming trend hitting us today that accelerates for christmas eve and christmas day. expect a lot of sunshine, dry conditions, mid and upper 60's on christmas on sunday. >> we are following your friday very light preholiday commute. late road were picking up on the sonoma grade. behind that, there is debris in lanes 680 near 84. reggie: macy's workers and san francisco's union square are expected to strike today. it is over wages and other concessions in recent contract talks. we did reach out to macy's. we have not heard back. kumasi: the house is expected to vote on a $1.7 billion spending bill to avoid a partial government shutdown.

feeling the pain from this storm. i want to give you some updated numbers on cancellations and delays that we just got in about one minute ago. so far, they already have 44 canceled flights and 45 delays. yesterday by around 11:00 a.m., they only had 16 cancellations compared to this number of 44 at around 5:30 this morning. here is a look at just how busy things are at sfo this morning, despite this looming storm. 136,000 travelers are expected to come in and out of this airport today, making today the busiest air travel day of the year for sfo. but be prepared for delays, cancellations and long lines. the domino effect of this potential bomb cyclone and blizzard conditions sweeping parts of the country, canceling nearly 6000 flights nationwide. travelers here on the west coast are feeling the pain from this once in a generation storm.

we talked to one man from oakland just trying to get to chicago, not for christmas, but for his father-in-law's funeral. he said he lost count how many times is flight had been canceled and even had to switch airlines. >> well, it's the unknown. you don't know whether you're even going to fly, so you are helpless. you cannot say goodbye. gain your last respects. lena: most airlines are waving change fees and offering travelers the option of choosing new flights to avoid the bad weather. however, it may be later than expected. now, these numbers of flight cancellations and delays are honestly changing by the minute so this is a very important reminder to check your flight status before you come and if

notifications sent right to your phone. reggie: the last minute shopping brushes here and starting today, you may run into picketers in union square. about 400 union workers at macy's will begin a strike this morning. they say contract talks have stalled within the company over better pay and full-time work opportunities. we have reached out to macy's about the strike multiple times and we still have not heard back. nurses at the altar of eight summit medical center will go on strike tomorrow, christmas eve. that is set to last through january 2 it will be the third strike by nurses this year. they are demanding a wage increase which the hospitals are calling unsustainable. they also raised concerns over working conditions, continuing education benefits. the hospitals are in berkeley and oakland. kumasi: q plans for crab on new year's eve officials say the first day of california crab season will be december 31. only half as many tribes as usual will be allowed along the bay area coast. the decision to open or delay has been really tough in recent years.

alance the need of grabbers while also protecting migrating whales and sea turtles so they don't get entangled in traps. reggie: one of san francisco's largest annual conference is is saying so long to the city next year. the chronicle reports palo alto software maker vmware will not host its conference at moscone center in 2023. the company said the decision makes financial sense but did not elaborate. vmware has not said where they will take the event. kumasi: new details about the new ikea store coming to san francisco. the store will open in the fall or winter of next year but there is no grand opening date just yet. so, you are looking at people moving boxes but we want to show you, there you so, this is what the building on market street is going to look like once the construction is complete. it will be six levels and alongside the ikea store, the swedish retailer says the building will include a mix of shops, food, entertainment and office space.

reggie: oakland police their new plan to fight crime that launched in the fall is working.
