potentially life-threatening below zero temperatures this morning. >> all of this creating a travel nightmare before christmas. the conditions on the roads this morning, already hazardous. take a look at our shot out of pittsburgh this morning. you do not want to be on those roads. >> thousands of flights have already been delayed or canceled. transportation correspondent gio benitez joins us with more on the impact from this bitter blast of winter. gio, good morning. >> reporter: hey, whit, good morning. it is a mess out there. more than 3,000 flights already canceled across america from seattle to detroit to chicago to right here in new york city on this friday eve before christmas eve. it is truly travel chaos from coast to coast. this morning, the major storm is hitting the northeast, causing flash flooding in new york city and the surrounding areas. the storm dispensing blizzard conditions to the midwest. in dayton, ohio, a whiteout forcing these cars off the road. on interstate 44 in missouri, the state highway patrol rushing to assist with half a dozen jackknifed trailers. the storm bringing bone-chilling

cold all the way to the south. in dallas, the temperature plummeting 20 degrees in just an hour. holiday travel coming to a standstill. more than 3,000 flights have already been canceled. many more delayed. >> the airport was complete chaos. i was standing in line for about an hour just to drop my bag before security. once i got to security, it was another hour wait. i ditched my bag and left the airport, after i had been there for seven hours. my sister thankfully booked me a flight. >> reporter: airports working extra hard to keep runways clean and clear. >> 350 pieces of snow removing equipment. lots of salt and lots of de-icer for the roadways. >> reporter: but it's not just the runways. ground crews can only be outside for a limited time in ultra cold weather adding yet another layer of potential delays. and that ripple effect is exactly why you're going to need

some patience today if you hope to get somewhere before christmas. now, look, i'm going to be very honest. there is very little you can do at this point except just wait it out or even preemptively change your flight to first thing tomorrow. juju, that may be the safer bet. >> we will all be checking the weather. thanks, gio. chicago is no stranger to such weather. jessica d'onofrio has been out in chicago, in the subzero streets driving around checking it out. it's been more dangerous and these cold conditions will remain. so good morning to you, jessica. >> reporter: we are trying to stay warm inside our truck but this cold can only be described as brutal. the wind is the worst part. the snow moved into the chicago area yesterday, now we're left with high winds and bitter cold. people have been struggling to stay warm. many wearing multiple layers. the brutal cold coming with many dangers. any skin that's exposed to the air could get frostbite very quickly.

meanwhile, many are trying to get preholiday errands done but finding it hard to get around. the temperatures will be below zero all morning, but it feels more like 30 below with the windchill. back to you. >> all right, jessica. thank you. we'll keep with the chicago theme here. cheryl scott is here from wls as well. she's got the timing of this arctic chill not looking so great out there this morning. >> it really is. and we're continuing to track the powerful storm system, heavy rain up and down the 95 corridor and northeast and heavy snow across parts of the great lakes. we combine this heavy rain and also heavy snow with extremely high winds. gusts expected to continue to increase through the day today. we're looking at gusts reaching upwards of 50 to 60 miles per hour. major travel delays can be expected. and then, the deep freeze. it's already in the heart of the country. we're waking up with windchills from 35 to 50 below. and all of this cold air continues to slide to the east. for instance, we're waking up in

the 50s in the northeast today. this cold front comes barreling through late morning, afternoon. and this is what it's going to feel like tomorrow morning. windchills, below zero. whit. >> wow, 30-plus degree drop in just one day. we'll check in in just a bit. the weather threatening to delay last-minute packages from arriving on time. as we kick off one of the busiest shopping days of the year and trevor ault is here with that story. >> reporter: it's december 23rd. this is when procrastinators would freak out even when the weather is good. now we're into panic mode. two days until christmas. fedex and u.p.s. are warning of shipping delays from all this extreme weather happening literally across the country. we want to show you a map. all of these locations, these are the hubs that they say are especially in trouble because of the severe weather as it moves through. and as we know those disruptions could have a ripple effect elsewhere too. we have already missed the recommended window for next day shipping. it actually may send even more people to the stores today and tomorrow. the friday and saturday before christmas, these are some of the

busiest shopping days of the year. but remember, because tomorrow is christmas eve it's a good idea to double-check your store hours online before you count on them being open and you go to shop. >> always good to double-check. how much of a role is inflation expected to play as people go out there and shop? >> reporter: all of us are recognizing that when you're just tallying up the bills. a lot might be consolidating their shopping into a single day just because it's so expensive to make multiple trips. and also because just about everything is more expensive. we're seeing a lot of people are going with gift cards because even in the worst of inflation a $50 gift card costs you $50, whit. >> we'll take that. thank you. appreciate it. >> thanks, whit. now to the breaking news overnight, the january 6th committee releasing its final report. our team read through the more thank 800-plus pages overnight breaking down the new findings from the 18-month investigation into the insurrection and former president trump's actions around

it. chief justice correspondent jon karl joins us with that. good morning to you, jon. >> reporter: good morning, juju. the january 6th committee's final report details donald trump's efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election. and it recommends that he not be allowed to run for office ever again. in its 845-page final report, s the january 6th committee says the violence that day was the fault of one man, the crescendo of donald trump's, quote, multipart plan to overturn the 2020 presidential election. capping 18 months of investigation, the january 6th committee's report lays out that plan in meticulous detail, marrying their dramatic public hearings and offering some additional new details. making several recommendations, the boldest that donald trump and others who engaged in insurrection be disqualified and barred from holding government office. >> no man who would behave that way at that moment in time can ever serve in any position of

authority in our nation again. he is unfit for any office. >> reporter: the committee's recommended reforms include changes to the law on certifying the presidential election and increased penalties for threatening that process and for threatening election workers. over the course of eight chapters, the committee describes trump's plan from his constant lies about election fraud that his own advisers repeatedly told him were false, to the pressure he and his allies put on nearly 200 state-level officials to overturn the election results. when that effort failed, trump then turned to his supporters. >> in the end, he summoned the mob to washington and knowingly they were armed and angry. pointed them to the capitol and told them to fight like hell. >> reporter: the report is a road map, not just for the american public, for history and for prosecutors.

with the extra u.s. backing of $1.8 billion. in a video message saying he's returning with good results with things that will really help and thanking the biden administration. zelenskyy also getting a boost from the g7 this morning announcing $32 billion in economic support. and as that worldwide aid comes, reports that russian resources are are depleting. and moscow relying more on private military company, the wagner group. the u.s. now confirming it received weapons to help putin's war from north korea, something pyongyang denies. now, this is fighting in the east raging on, both sides claiming they've caused heavy casualties there. and putin also saying he wants the war to end as quickly as possible. now, that's the first time he's called it a war instead of a special military operation. it's another sign of an escalation, juju. >> britt clennett reporting from overseas.

we know aid is big on the massive bill approved by the senate. our congressional correspondent rachel scott is breaking down what else is at stake in the vote in the house in just a few hours. rachel, where do things stand with the last-minute scramble to pass it? >> reporter: juju, good morning. it is a last-minute scramble because the house is now racing to pass this bill to avoid a government shutdown right before the holidays. but this is a massive piece of legislation. we're talking about $1.7 trillion. so let's break down what's included. you'll see that $45 billion in aid to ukraine. that's more than the administration asked for and comes right after those direct pleas from president zelenskyy himself. $858 billion in military spending including a pay raise for troops. $40 billion in disaster aid and does provide protections for pregnant workers including expanding breast-feeding accommodations in the workplace. billions in funding for child care providing a financial assistance to low-income

families. and it includes a ban on tiktok on government devices. and an overhaul of the electric tort count reform act. this is the law that trump tried to explain on january 6th. the changes make it absolutely clear that the vice president's role is completely ceremonial when counting those votes. lawmakers are saying this is the most significant thing they have done in years. the house is expected to pass this in just a few hours then it heads to the president's deck for his signature. whit? >> we know congress needs a holiday deadline often to get things done. thanks so much. the latest on sam bankman-fried. he's been released on a $250 million bond as he faces multiple fraud charges in the collapse of the cryptocurrency exchange he founded. aaron katersky has the latest. aaron, good morning. >> reporter: whit, good morning to you. once a globetrotting crypto billionaire, sam bankman-fried this morning is living with his parents in palo alto, california, after federal prosecutors said he committed a fraud of epic proportions.

we're following. including the latest on the treacherous holiday travel. a major storm hitting the northeast with flooding from virginia to new york. a blizzard warning has been issued for at least eight states now and it could be the coldest christmas in decades for millions. we're tracking the weather all morning long. also north korea fired two ballistic missiles overnight, this coming at the end of an unprecedented year of weapons tests. take a look at this. the evacuation of a ferry in new york harbor near the statue of liberty. five people were injured including three ferry crew members. a fire broke out in the engine room during the afternoon rush. there were nearly 900 passengers aboard. they were evacuated onto other boats that responded. they safely got home to staten island. we have a lot more ahead including the urgent holiday travel warning. what you need to know if you're planning to hit the road next to those big semis. that's coming up. >> so many planning to hit the roads. now we turn to megan thee stallion. the shooting trial continues. jury deliberations are now under way in the case of the rapper who's accused of shooting the grammy winner back in 2020. stephanie ramos is here with the latest. good morning to you, stephanie.

>> reporter: good morning, juju. this case has been explosive and now it is winding down. the jury started deliberating in the case involving rapper megan thee stallion and rapper tory lanez. lanez is accused of shooting at megan's feet. he says it wasn't him. he could face nearly 23 years in prison if convicted. the high-profile trial pitting megan thee stallion against former friend, canadian rapper tory lanez, now in the hands of the jury. ♪ her, her, her ♪ >> reporter: the three-time grammy winner says lanez fired a gun at her after a party in the summer of 2020 injuring her feet. but lanez who pled not guilty to the three felony gun charges says that's simply not true. the defense urging jurors to focus on the testimony heard this week. and possibly directing blame for the shooting at former friend kelsey harris who one witness recalled fighting with stallion

shortly before shots were heard. lanez's team says the story is better if a black man shoots a black woman and that this was an investigation that was meant to blame a black man. but stallion's legal team firing back, saying the evidence of gun fragments in her feet speaks for itself. adding, the fact she's pointing the finger at a male rapper at all has had intense repercussions for the 27-year-old, including public backlash, which has only exploded since the trial began. >> this is about an embattled district attorney who is trying to focus on a celebrity trial rather than protecting the citizens of his county. and it needs to stop. >> reporter: the jurors including alternates are made up of nine women and five men, four being black. they heard from a parade of witnesses including a teary megan herself. one key witness has been noticeably absent, her former

yes, george santos says he ready to break his silence. that he has a story to tell. pressure is only growing after a new round of allegations. this morning, the newly elected congressman accused of deceiving voters is promising to address mounting questions about his resume and background. george santos of new york tweeting, i have my story to tell and it will be told next week. adding, i remain committed to delivering the results i campaigned on but it's the background he campaigned on that has the republican from long island facing scrutiny. he told voters about the promise of the american dream saying his grandparents survived the holocaust and fled to brazil. >> fleeing hitler, going to brazil, that's a story of perseverance and i'm so proud. >> reporter: but "the forward" reviewed sites that showed his

player ronnie hillman, the running back who won a super bowl with the denver broncos passing away from a rare form of cancer at age 31. ike adaji joins us now. >> good morning, juju. ronnie's family reveal would he was diagnosed with that cancer back in august and the team he won the super bowl with is reacting to this shocking tragedy. this morning the nfl world is i. former nfl running back and super bowl l champion ronnie hillman dead at the age of 31 from cancer. on wednesday, hillman's family posting on his instagram page. in august of this year, ronnie was diagnosed with renal medulla, and renal medulla carcinoma or rmc is exceptionally rare, accounting for less than 1% of all kidney

cancers. rmc is almost exclusively diagnosed in young people of african-american descent with sickle cell dice nosis. he was a standout player in high school and at san diego state university, hillman was selected in the third round by the denver broncos in 2012. hillman most notably led the bro broncos during the super bowl l championship run. soft-spoken with a warm smile and quiet intensity, he will be fondly remembered by our organization. former teammate omar bolden speaking to "gma" overnight about hillman's loss. >> ronnie and i experienced a lot of things together for the first time which was awesome and beautiful. he was someone who wanted to have fun and laugh all the time. he was a great brother with a good heart. >> ronnie hillman's high school coach said his smile would light

hitting the road. stay clear of semi trucks. how to tell if you're in a driver's blind spot. good morning. >> this is especially important as we head into the holiday weekend. a truck is massive weighing as many as five male accidents. it is no surprise when there is an accident between a big rig and a passenger vehicle. the passenger vehicle is often the one titled which is why experts stress, keep your distance. >> driving too close to a semitruck like this can be devastating. thankfully that driver survived, but in 2020, nearly 5,000 people were killed in accidents involving large trucks and research shows 78% of crashes or near crashes are caused by drivers of passenger vehicles. experts say driving around a big rig can be particularly dangerous when vehicles spend too much time in one of truck's

massive blind spots. watch as this red car drives below the truck driver's line of sight becoming virtually invisible and as the truck shifts lanes. thankfully there were no injuries. >> it is important that drivers of cars realize that truck drivers cannot always see you. if you're in a blind zone, make sure you get out of it as safely and quickly as you can. >> so we buckled up and with help from the virginia tech transportation institute, get a glimpse of just how tough visibility can be when you're in the driver's seat of an 18-wheeler. >> sitting here in the driver's seat i'm checking the left mirrors, the right mirror, looking in front of us, and it looks clear. but take a look at the drone shot. there are seven other vehicles and motorcycles and another semitruck behind us all sitting in blind spots. >> large trucks have not one,

but four blind spots referred to as no zones. since there's no rear-view mirror the no zone in the back can stretch 200 feet. the most dangerous area is to the right where the no zone can span more than three lanes which is why only passing on the left side where the blind spot is smaller is so critical. once you pass. experts say wait until you see the entire front of the truck in your own rear-view mirror before merging in front of it to avoid the often forgotten blind spot just below your truck's fender. >> there is a motorcycle in front of us. i don't see it at all. a fully loaded semi can weigh up to 7,000 pounds and can take the length of a football field. >> a lot of times they will get in front of the truck and get in front of it and slow down. sometimes the truck driver does not have time to react. that can end in a rear-end
