impacting airports across the country. travelers heading east for the holiday weekend are facing delays and cancellations this morning. we are seeing the same situation at the airports in oakland and san jose. friday broke the record for the most flight cancellations in or out of the u.s. with nearly 6000 flights canceled according to flightaware. southwest canceled 950 flights yesterday, the most of any airline. experts predict it is going to take all airlines several days to recover. many travelers are being forced to wait hours or days to get where they need to go. >> i was told i have to wait in the airport for three days for the next available flight on the 26th of december. >> i am on four standby for the 24th and 25th.

christmas presents for my family. i had a busy week. >> last-minute. you still have today. the national retail foundation says consumers are getting back to in person shopping. it is addicting a record turnout today with shoppers searching for the perfect gift the day before christmas. the chp's maximum enforcement period is underway. officers are looking for aggressive and distracted drivers and drivers under the influence. the period runs through tomorrow at midnight. experts say you should avoid the roads the day after christmas, traffic is expected to be worse between 2:00 and 6:00 p.m. in the day after new year's day expected to have the most congestion between 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. new developments in a deadly shooting at the mall of america on one of the busiest shopping days of the year.

the mall was placed on lockdown. some people hiding. minnesota police say a 19-year-old died from gunshot wounds after a verbal altercation that escalated quickly at a nordstrom's store. officials have identified the suspects. francisco, police investigating the deaths of two little girls in the bayview district. the bodies of the children, a one-year-old and five-year-old, were found inside a home. police were seen at the home on navy road friday. arrived both parents were there, the children were declared dead on scene, and a 34-year-old woman has been taken into custody. it is unclear what her connection is to the victims. she is being held at the san francisco county jail on two homicide counts. we will bring you the latest details when they are available.

a terrifying story in petaluma where a woman says someone tried to kidnap her child. it happened around 9:30 p.m. thursday. the mom says she was walking with her three-year-old when someone tried to grab her son's wrist. she yelled at the man. he ran across the street, got into a car and drove westbound. police are trying to find witnesses or surveillance video. in the southbay, a san jose mother is inspiring an entire community with her grand gesture to bring joy to her terminally ill son. amanda del castillo has the meaning behind the decorations. reporter: holiday reindeer, a lot of twinkling lights, a labor of love for shelley gimenez. >> as you know, chris was in the hospital. we almost lost him. reporter: chris is terminally

ill. his condition only worsening since we saw him in october. chris is displaying symptoms of early onset dementia. he is having difficulty breathing. >> every day is difficult. we are in the house with him. one of us has to be sitting next to him 24/7. our existence reporter: between hospital trips and creating comfort inside her home, she found time to transform the front lawn. the elaborate holiday displays have become a community staple. we were there in 2019 when jimenez first used bright lights and loud audio to create lasting memories for chris. he lost his sight the following halloween. >> i don't think we could get through as much as we have without the love and prayers

>> covid cases are on the rise, as our concerns about the flu and rsv. officials say covid cases could increase after the holidays. over 100 million covid infections have been reported. experts say that number is likely higher due to unreported at home testing. hospitalizations and deaths are up. cases of leveling out. >> holidays represent a super spreading event. we want to make sure we are reducing potential transmission to limit a possible surge in january. >> some people are having a harder time finding medicines they need for respiratory illnesses. over-the-counter children's pain and fever reducers are in short supply. a reminder if you live in san francisco, you cannot have wood-burning fires this weekend.

spare the air alert is in effect now through christmas day. it is illegal for people to use wood-burning devices. people can protect their health by staying indoors and avoiding outdoor activities. lisa argen is tracking the forecast and telling us why we have that in place. lisa: we have high-pressure overhead. that creates a lid mixing coming in from the east. that allows that fog to come into play. light offshore winds in the winter usually means stagnant air quality and light winds. we need to mix things up with a little rain. that is what we have in store. you will notice the storm track well to the north of us. temperatures in the 30's right now. some of the cooler locations around novato, 36.

>> continues at macy's. why 90% of the union square location is demanding change as holiday shoppers pour in. good morning to you. mary christmas eve. we are starting off with a look at the weather with lisa argen. at least here, not in the midwest or most of the country, we have good weather this weekend. lisa: it has been a little cool. we have modified those overnight lows. the afternoon highs on the chilly side. visibility down to nothing in novato, half mile in the delta. we have a dense fog advisory through 11:00. temperatures on the cool side, low to mid 40's. in the north bay we have 30's.

holiday destination, there is good news. gas prices continue to be an early present for california drivers. they have dropped significantly since thanksgiving. san francisco gas is holding at 4:40 9 -- 4.49. oakland gas is at last minute shoppers will be met with more than the sound of holiday bells at macy's in san francisco. that noise coming from macy's union square workers. more than 90% of employees of the store and started a two day strike yesterday. they say the store wants to cut their sick leave and is offering an $.85 pay raise over three years. >> they want to cut employees
