the hustle and bustle being seen at the malls, and shoppers are scrambling to get last-minute gifts. our abc reporter takes a closer look at the christmas eve rush. reporter: parking lots packet bay area malls. it is getting down to the wire. >> who was the procrastinator here? >> both of us. reporter: procrastinators are on the hunt for last-minute holiday gifts. tatiana and solomon were crossing items off their list. >> that is a long list. >> we have five more people. >> is december 24. when did you start this list? >> yesterday. reporter: summer wrapping up, others are hitting the stores one last time. dazzling deals drove sophia to the story. >> are you a procrastinator? >> i am looking for the sale. reporter: at the international

airport the holiday rush appears to be at a standstill. long lines stretched across the terminal. >> i have spent more time in line that i have traveling. reporter: with thousands of canceled flights because of the busy roadways and blizzard conditions travelers are stuck, stranded, struggling to find a way to get home before december 25. it is not looking good for patrick of oakland. >> just trying to get home and see family and friends in buffalo. we have been canceled four times. now we are trying to get to newark. >> it is frustrating. reporter: back to the malls where the holiday spirit is a bit brighter. whatever situation you are in, wishing you and yours a happy holiday. anchor: we have told you about the impact of the massive winter storm impacting bay area flights, but that is not the worst of it. 17 deaths are being attributed

to the severe weather, and there are widespread power outages. reporter: the major winter storm is impacting millions of americans as it brings bitter cold temperatures, lizard conditions, and flooding too much of the country. >> it stings the eyes. you feel like you have icicles on your eyelashes. trying to keep everything covered up. reporter: buffalo, new york getting more than 2 feet of snow, the were shut down until monday. 2/3 of response vehicles are stuck. >> is life-threatening what is going on as we speak in buffalo. reporter: in kentucky more than 700 vehicles were struck -- stuck on a 14 mile stretch of i 71 after an emergency highway closure. >> we were able to evacuate most by shutting down the interstate and turning them around. now we can get some of those that are stuck north bound, but it will take time. reporter: 50 cars were involved

in a deadly pilot in ohio. snow and ice to blame. >> this is a stark reminder of what can happen when you get behind the wheel and tried to drive in bad weather conditions. reporter: at airports thousands of flights have been canceled or delayed. on friday alone 6000 flights were canceled. >> what we have done is to make sure our restaurants, concessions have stayed open late. we have passed out blankets. reporter: powerful wind taking a toll, ripping the roof off this hotel in new hampshire and causing this tree to come crashing down on a car, trapping the men inside. first responders getting into the hospital, they say he is doing well. anchor: francis standing in for spencer tonight. looking at that video we do not have it that bad. meteorologist: our weather seems downright balmy, but for those traveling it has been tough. right now newark is reporting

crash suffered severe damage. investigators believe the vehicle spun out of control in the marina green area. it took out a gate, part of a workout structure and two large trees. investigators say it speeding likely played a role in that crash. a spike in crime in oakland the bus because chinatown has organizers taking matters into their own hands. the oakland chinatown improvement council has formed its own security team. they have been on patrol for more than 600 days edibles during oakland police efforts. new patrol come in after a series of break-ins. what they are doing is they will be on patrol from 7:00 p.m. until 7:00 a.m. overnight. they say property crimes tend to happen during those hours. >> this period of time, there were a lot of incidents happening. ndows or breaking in the

entrance of the shop or breaking into cars. the decision to add overnight patrols came after the council had an emergency meeting to address safety concerns of citizens. humboldt county is being shaken by aftershocks. just a little after 11:30 this morning a 4.2 magnitude earthquake struck in the same area. the epicenter, 6 miles southwest of rio dell which is where the 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck on tuesday. two people were killed and 17 others injured. the city of rio dell remains under a boil water advisory, which might take a while to be resolved. 27 homes were red tag to their. 42 houses were damaged and yellow tags. damage estimates could start coming in the next week. we are tracking santa, check it

we have a coastal flood advisory due to the tides. expect flooding in low-lying areas highlighted in green, the usual spots. if you are traveling tomorrow be careful around noon when high tide peaks. here is a live shot from walnut creek. tomorrow is another spare the air day, so no wood-burning. they are expecting poor air quality in santa clara valley. dense fog will come in pockets through parts of the fairfield area and solano county. look for dense log midnight to noon tomorrow. that will make it tricky for traveling at that time. overnight lows in the mid 40's. a few upper 30's in santa rosa and fairfield.
