reporter: five more people? when did you start this list? >> yesterday. reporter: the final stretch. some are wrapping up, others hitting the stores one last time, dazzling deals drawing sophia to the store. >> i am looking for the sales. reporter: the holiday rush appears to be at a standstill at the airport. long lines stretching across the terminal. >> i've spent more time in line than traveling. reporter: with thousands of flights canceled across the country because of icy runways and blizzard conditions, travelers are stuck stranded, struggling to find a way to get home before december 25 and it is not looking good for patrick from oakland. >> just trying to get home and see family and friends in buffalo and we've been canceled four times. now we are trying to get to new

work so we can drive to buffalo. >> it's frustrating. i haven't seen family for six months. reporter: back to the malls, where the holiday spirit is a bit brighter. whatever situation you are and, wherever you are at, wishing you and yours a happy holidays. suzanne phan, abc7news. dion: we told you about the storm affecting bay area flights but that's not the worst of it. 17 deaths are being attributed to the severe weather and their widespread power outages. phil lipof has details. reporter: the major winter storm impacting millions of americans as it brings bitter cold temperatures, blizzard conditions and flooding too much of the country. >> you feel like you immediately have bicycles on your eyelashes. trying to keep everything covered up. reporter: buffalo, new york with more than two feet of snow. two thirds of emergency response vehicles stuck across the city

and officials morning residents to check furnace vents to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning. >> it is life-threatening. reporter: in kentucky, more than 700 vehicles stuck on i-71 after an emergency highway closure. >> we were able to evacuate most shutting down the interstate and turning them around. now we can get some of those that are stuck north bound, but it will take some time. reporter: roughly 50 cars involved in a deadly pileup in ohio, snow and ice to blame. >> this is a stark reminder of what can happen when you get behind the wheel and tried to drive in bad weather conditions. reporter: at the nation's airports, thousands of flights canceled or delayed. on friday alone, nearly 6000 flights canceled, the most of any day this year. >> what we have done is make sure our restaurants, our concessions have stayed open late. we have passed out blankets. reporter: powerful wind taking a

toll, ripping the roof off this hotel in new hampshire and causing this tree to come crashing down on a car, trapping a man inside. first responders getting him to the hospital. they say he is doing well. phil lipof, abc news, new york. dion: talking about the weather here at home, we are downright lucky in comparison to the rest of the country. frances: yes average and folks will have a tough time traveling in the northeast, where a special -- where right now they are talking about average flight delays toward newark and that will be a mess. check out the temperatures around the nation. -13 in fargo versus 57 in san francisco. then we factor in wind chill's especially for the midwest and northeast and it feels like -18 degrees in minneapolis, negative nine in buffalo. tomorrow when the kids wake up

for christmas, it will be below good minneapolis, -13. i will have your complete forecast coming up. dion: moving on, humboldt still being shaken by aftershocks. just a little after 11:30 this morning, a 4.2 magnitude quake struck in the same area. the epicenter was about six miles southwest of rio dell, which is where the 6.4 magnitude earthquake struck on tuesday. two people were killed and 17 injured in that quake. there were no immediate reports of damage from today's. however, the city of rio dell remains under a boil water advisory that might take another week to be resolved. 27 homes were red tagged in rio dell, meaning it is unsafe for people to go inside. another 42 houses were damaged and yellow tagged. estimates of damage could start coming in next week. a spike in crime in oakland

chinatown has organizers taking matters into their own hands. a grant and funds from the oakland konta town improvement council will expand the patrol group. they are one of just four patrol organizations that assist oakland police. the new patrols will be from 7:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. and this comes after a series of break-ins, including one recently at an academy in franklin. local groups say break-ins have been the most overnight. >> this kind of period of time, there were a lot of incidents happening. for instance, breaking into shop windows or breaking into an entrance of a shop or breaking into cars. it happened so many times. dion: the decision to add overnight patrols came after the council held an emergency meeting last week to address safety concerns of citizens.

volunteers at a memorial church feeling the spirit of giving as they prepare meals for san francisco's vulnerable communities. volunteers served up to 1000 meals at an outdoor dining area for their annual christmas eve brunch. thousands of pounds of prime rib was donated from the iconic house a primary restaurant. >> it has been so nice seeing everyone, just helping out and it is such a warm feeling to see everyone give back and be here and come together. it is really nice, i want to do it every year. dion: 200 meals were prepared and delivered for people living in encampments. brunch attendees were given a bag of warm clothes for the winter. happening right now, we are tracking santa. this is a map as he makes stops around the globe. right now he is in newfoundland -- i always have a hard time pronouncing that. this is in canada. not long ago he was in brazil and he really is making a good

is hit around the world. it all comes about 13 years after the original. george pinocchio talked to some of its newest stars. >> why do you come to us? >> i want my family to be safe. reporter: avatar: the way of water welcome spec characters welcomes back characters. they are forced to leave the forest with their children and hide in a new regions of pandora along with others who might help them protect their planet. several young actors joined the cast and since the adventure started in 2017, they have learned they were in for a wild ride. >> you get cast and you are like a let's go, it is happening. reporter: but you are happy with what you have done now you see the finished product? >> i am so pleased.

ough the way it has been done for centuries. time to check in our on our christmas weekend forecast. i'm hungry. frances: [laughter] we have some clouds moving in, but so far dry around the bay area, temperatures have been milder. temperatures in the mid-50's around the bay, san francisco and oakland 56. cooler in fairfield. milder at the beaches today. a live shot from the downtown exploratorium camera. we have coastal flood fog advisories in effect and tomorrow will be another spare the air day for christmas, so no wood-burning. another storm monday afternoon /evening. this is quite a strong one and i will show you that coming up. coastal flood advisory through 2:00 tomorrow.

that is due to king tides, and we could see some low flooding in some of those areas. especially around noon is when the high tide peaks. be careful if you're driving to those areas. walnut creek, hazy conditions because of the high-pressure and offshore flow. so spare the air through tomorrow. we are expecting moderate air quality to continue through monday. in addition, there is a dense fog advisory and we could see patchy fog in parts of the north bay. solano quite thick. visibility will be down to a force of a mile and this could create hazardous driving conditions so try to use low beams in that area. lows tonight in the 40's. mid-40's around the bay. upper 30's out there like santa rosa, fairfield and antioch. then you see the fog in the delta and central part of the valley of california paired highs tomorrow also on the milder side. low 60's for almost everybody.

san francisco, 60, oakland 63, san jose 65 and hazy. mild in cloverdale at 68. even half moon bay will be 61. here's a look at the forecast animation. we are mostly dry all day monday and than monday afternoon we start to see some showers hit the north bay. it will be heaviest monday night and late into tuesday morning. we are seeing areas of orange and red and those are downpours. that will sweep through the bay area mostly by tuesday morning, tapering into showers wednesday. check out the rainfall estimates. over two inches in some locations for the north bay, like santa rosa, ukiah, around the bay, likely less than an inch. enjoy the mild christmas day tomorrow and then get ready for the rain headed our way. monday will be level 1 and thin then level two for tuesday. showers on wednesday.
