we begin with that monster storm battering the nation and causing chaos for millions over the holiday weekend. abc's phil lipof is here in new york with the latest. >> reporter: this morning, that massive storm now paralyzing parts of the northeast. in buffalo, new york, more than 2 feet of snow and wind gusts and wind chills 25 below zero. the airport there shutting down until monday morning. emergency crews stuck as well. >> the worst affected areas there's no emergency service available. >> reporter: this reporter from our abc affiliate wkbw in buffalo. >> these conditions so bad it's now being considered one of the worst blizzards in its history. >> reporter: in pensacola, florida, a car encased in ice. mobile, alabama, a frozen funtain. in holland, michigan, abandoned cars littering the roads. >> so close to jackknife, look. >> reporter: the storm wreaking havoc on holiday travel.

many americans simply won't be able to make it to their christmas destinations. temperatures will begin to warm up a bit, still power companies in at least 13 states are asking customers to refrain from unnecessary use of electricity. erielle. >> our thanks to phil. we turn now overseas to war in ukraine. president zelenskyy calling russia's bombing of a busy market on christmas eve llfopleasu. rorr: this rnf the strikes in with dozens more injured. in his christmas eve address, president zelenskyy saying no kamikaze drones are capable of extinguishing the christmas glow. we will fill our hearts with warmth and light. and despite concerns that russia could send another barrage of rockets into ukraine at any moment, ukrainians keeping up

bring families together one flight at a time. this season, they're soaring to in new heights. abc's stephanie ramos has the story of one holiday reunion they made possible. stephanie, good morning. >> reporter: military service members go through a lot, mentally and emotionally being overseas, imagine getting injured and working through treatments and recovery alone. this is where luke's wings steps in and provides emergency travel planning services and airplane tickets for the families and loved ones of wounded, ill and injured service members. here's one of their latest special reunions. >> go ahead, guys. >> reporter: as many of us head home for the holidays, for larissa and joe housenick and their six children this flight is especially meaningful. they're on their way to see their nephew who was on active duty when a traumatic motorcycle accident caused him to lose one of his legs. >> i remember waking up in the hospital not realizing what had

happened. >> reporter: he's been recovering at walter reed for more than a year. his mother sally rushing to be by his side. >> most of my brain was in shock for like, you know, my baby. he's hurt. >> reporter: larissa and joe haven't seen him in eight years. >> he's so much taller than the last time we saw him, too. he was little. >> they're beautiful people, they're wonderful, they've been reaching out, texting me, calls, asking about the recovery the whole way. >> reporter: and for some of their kids it will be the first time they get to meet their cousin steven. >> are you excited? >> yeah. >> it will give a great mental boost.y from utah to d.c. made possible by the nonprofit organization, luke's wings, which helps families travel to be with their wounded or ill loved ones. that emotional and physical

service. you may be sitting next to your christmas tree, but before it got there, your tree went on a journey rivaling only abc's wi uabout at bp. >> reporter: they're a staple in millions of homes across the country every holiday season. did you know a tree this big starts out as a tiny seed? hundreds of miles away from here. this is the story of a christmas tree. ♪ our journey begins here, at the quarter pine tree farm in smithfield, pennsylvania. >> hello. today we're at my seed processing facility. >> reporter: jim's family business has been around for more than three decades with the help of his right hand and stepdaughter beth. >> this is ground-up cones and in the cones the seed is in there so we have to get it out. >> reporter: the best seeds are cleaned and sorted using specialized equipment. then shipped across the country

to the pacific northwest where they develop for around three years before being sent back. from there jim plants the tiny baby trees at his farm but he also sends them to other farmers where the tree goes about a foot a year. >> lot of people assume you plant the tree and it grows, you care for it every month of the year. >> reporter: and while it's a tough job, jim and beth say it's the joy that makes it all worth it. >> when i run into people, oh, my gosh, you're the girl at the christmas tree farm. i say, yes. they say you're the favorite day of the year. we're such an important part of their christmas holiday season. >> reporter: some of those baby trees from jim and beth end up here at our next stop, the hidden pond tree farm in mendham, new jersey, owned and operated -- i got to ask, is your name really kris nicholas.

until i got older how much she did for me. >> reporter: a program that focuses on low-income families. >> these moms are doing the same thing that his mom was doing. they're all in school and doing whatever they can to get their kids to be successful. >> reporter: a single mom who's working her way through nursing school, this year, thanks to bridges, they're in for a treat, first watching an exciting suns game. >> i haven't been able to do things like this with my kids, ever, so i was really excited. >> reporter: then after a special surprise. bridges trading his uniform for a santa hat. >> merry christmas. >> reporter: giving each mom a $1,000 gift certificate and kids exciting gifts like ipads, basketballs and more. for this family it's christmas they'll cherish forever. >> i'm truly grateful for it. >> reporter: for bridges

abc's ines de la cuetara takes us on a world tour to see some of those unique and special celebrations. ines, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, whit, billions around the world celebrate christmas every year. every country has its own traditions. some of the unique ways christmas is celebrated. from the winter wonderland in london, the extravagant light shows in the philippines, to these dazzling displays in colombia, it's christmas. in france, it's all about the food. for christmas they roll out their so-called buche or the yule log cake. we went to the famed cooking school to learn how to make one. >> today we're going to make chocolate cake. >> reporter: the secret, making sure every layer is perfectly even.

>> this is a cake not to be shared with the family, in the christmas spirit. >> reporter: also these beautiful christmas markets, this one here right in the heart of paris, the louvre museum is down there. this is how parisians get in the christmas spirit. with chestnuts roasting on an open fire, melted cheese and an array of french delicacies, even santa had to stop by. elsewhere across europe, we take a look at christmas from above. in estonia's capital, holiday revelers perform traditional folk dances around the christmas market tree. while deep in the arctic circle, finland, claiming to be the original home of santa claus, with its very own santa village. and for the grinches who don't believe in santa, some undeniable christmas magic, those breathtaking northern lights. celebrate our endless with the
