enjoying mild numbers. the storm track is heading into the pacific northwest but that will shift. dense fog advisory for the north and east bay until 10:00 this morning. visibility at half a mile. just over two miles in better in the south bay at the mild numbers. . 43 fremont and oakland, 40 santa rosa, 50 four half moon bay. that makes us about seven degrees milder. you can see areas of poor pockets for sensitive groups into the east bay and southbay. we have another spare the air alert today for everyone. you can see how hazy it is. we will monitor the air quality before we get that rain arriving late tomorrow. enjoy the hazy sun and mild

60's. karina: back to that deadly winter storm hitting the country. many americans are waking up to a better jaichill. feet of snow amid dangerously cold temperatures. derek dennis is in new york. derek: strong wind, heavy across the country. in kentucky, one interstate was shut down for hours. buffalo, new york is taking a punch. >> these conditions are so bad it is being considered one of the worst blizzards in history. cars looked abandoned. i have to wear ski goggles just to be able to see from the high winds creating snow drifts 10 feet high. derek: the airport closed until monday at the earliest. a driving band in effect. more than 50 rescues after

people got trapped in their vehicles. >> it is not something we are proud of. but in the worst affected areas, there is no emergency service available. derek: one mother turning to facebook after first responders could not reach her home. her one-year-old is on a ventilator. they lost power so she is giving air manually. electricity across the country in at least 13 states asking customers to conserve. >> consumer efforts to conserve the next 24 hours will help avoid outages. derek: the national weather service saying this depicts one of the greatest accidents of winter advisories ever. >> the wind is making it feel like it is zero degrees. some of the for charlotte, atlanta and memphis. derek: the water in this fountain in florida is frozen. the storm also taking a toll on air travel. more than 20% of flights canceled friday, a record for

this year. a lot of travelers have not made it to their holiday destinations. derek dennis, abc news, new york. karina: at least 18 have died and connection to the storm. more than 175,000 customers across the country remain without power. travelers are feeling those effects in the bay area. live look at sfo airport. as of this morning, 27 flights out of sfo have been canceled, leaving many people stranded. a pilot is expected to survive after he was seriously injured in a crash in livermore. the small plane crashed saturday afternoon near a storage facility, about a mile from the livermore municipal airport. the cause is not known. new this morning, authorities investigating after a fire erupted on a jetblue flight, forcing over 160 passengers to evacuate. it happened saturday night

around 9:00 p.m. the plane was coming from barbados and landed at jfk airport. officials say the fire may have started due to a faulty electronic device, but they are working to figure out the exact cause. members of a local bay area band are recovering after their tour bus was totaled. it is also their mobile stage and their main source of income. as anser hassan tells us, they need help to get the music playing again. anser: this is not how members of the band hemorrhage were hoping to end their night. >> we just came from sacramento. now we are on our way home as we entered the freeway. some guy was going 60 or 80 miles per hour and hit as really hard. they dragged as. anser: john is the guitarist for hemorrhage. the crash happened early saturday morning in the soma

district. nobody was seriously hurt. >> it was like slow motion. the next thing i know the next to me is not there. anser: he says the alleged driver that hit them was arrested by police who happened, be nearby. but there bus is not a typical tour bus. it is also their mobile stage. >> we opened the door and pop the window and we start playing. ♪ anser: sort of like a food truck. >> exactly like a food truck concept but we turned it into music. anser: but no bus means no business. the new year's gig is canceled. and then later to tour texas. their losses will be in the thousands, a big hit for a band trying to build momentum after the pandemic. >> we grew our instagram followers and we got endorsements. we are doing this full time now. anser: a new bus could cost up

explorer. chinatown is tacking on extra measures for the holidays. dion lim shows us how the community is coming together to fight the prevalence of asian hate. dion: clad in neon orange, these volunteers are no strangers to oakland's chinatown, and there is a reason why they are gathering christmas eve. >> they have whistles, mace, but they are just average folks who have had enough. dion: the patrol group is one of four organizations that walk the streets of the neighborhood, formed after what felt like, to shop owners and residents, not stop crime. they h months. the past few weeks though have been challenging. >> the holiday season always brings a uptick in crime. dion: in the past week, thieves broke into cars, this kung fu studio and a yogurt shop not far away.

don't let high drive. go safely, california. karina: in afghanistan, the taliban announced women are no longer allowed to work for international ngo's. it is citing complaints regarding the observance of the dress code. on thursday they also suspended access to university education for all female students. protesters are being met with violence and arrests, including the use of water cannons. russian forces continue their offensive in ukraine but ukrainians are determined to celebrate the holiday. many gathered for a christmas day feast with chairs left empty donner soldiers missing or being held captive. in a christmas eve address, president zelensky said, "no, because he drowns can extinguish the christmas star -- kamik

drones can extinguish the christmas star." an earthquake in humboldt county struck around 11:30 a.m. yesterday. the epicenter was east of the community still recovering from tuesday's big earthquake, including ferndale and rio del. those in rio del are still being asked to boil water. the distribution center may close tomorrow if no longer related. thousands of san francisco's most vulnerable will be served a meal this weekend. as tara campbell about more than the meals. tara:er these volunteers are serving up some premium prime rib in the heart of san francisco's tenderloin district.

nothing says christmas like tamales. we saw long lines at some of the best shops in the east bay. >> we have got our tamales. now we can party. [laughter] karina:e capartyow a la palmathfor businesses likl this is one of the busiest times of the year. and they also make their own corn dough, masa, the way it has been done for centuries. that sounds so good. anything warm. it is a christmas morning tradition. lisa: it sticks to your ribs. karina: right. lisa: we are definitely looking at visibility issues this morning with the dense fog advisory through the north and east bay. once that begins to lift and the moisture evaporates, we are getting into another mild day. the last mild day for a while in

terms of sunshine. in fact, those southerly will allow for temperatures to rise into your monday night with a warm sector of the system. but it is going to be a mess as the spreads heavy rain in the sierra nevada. we could see issues with our rivers and streams, and with this quick mover, it should be beneficial. but we are looking at a pretty good slug of moisture headed our way as early as late tomorrow. as we look at the current visibility, it is just over a mile in concord, under that by the delta. the dense fog advisory with light east winds, that fog being transported to the east bay and north bay. half mile visibility santa rosa but no issues elsewhere. this will take us through 10:00, 10:30. there is patchy fog in pacifica and half moon bay. temperatures are mild in

oakland, 46 napa, and the visibility downtown is good. you will notice how good the city looks this morning. dense fog north and east, coastal flood advisory continues through the afternoon due to the king tides, the higher than normal high tides, and excessive low tide. that storm arrives monday night. the low-lying areas from mill valley, the bayshore that could have flooding. bringing in the impact scale exclusive to abc 7, monday night into tuesday this is a level 2. wind up to 50 miles per hour at the mountains and that warm sector of the storm bringing in the rain. transitioning to the colder part of the system with thunderstorms. high clouds today and some of that tonight will limit the fog into your monday morning. here is monday afternoon at 3:00. by 5:00 or 6:00 the north bay is looking at the heavier rain.

scattered be the rule the rest of the week before we get into a stronger system new year's eve. over an inch of rain in san francisco, two inches in the north bay. we could see flooding in sonoma county. upwards of three and four inches. here comes the wind. like this morning bringing in the fog and monday night we could have a wind advisory. pouring rain and the mountains on tuesday before transitioning to snow. as we look at the snow totals, this will be that heavy, wet cement. we could see about two feet but the timing of that transition from rain to snow is tough. 64 fremont and hazy skies. level 2 system on tuesday. scattered showers through the weekend new year's eve could be another atmospheric river.

[phone ringing] we are on year 43 this year. i started coming here as a when i was about 14 or 15. early 1980's. the uptick of vinyl happened around 2008. >> if you do not have records, cd's or cassette's, you can just look around. >> i think it is rock 'n' roll heaven. >> that is the point of going into a record store. i am going to come in and get this and this and off i go. other people want to clear their head and just record shop. a lot of people buying stuff they grew up within giving it to their kids or nieces or nephews. they are passing on what they love to the second-generation.

announcer: building a better bay area, moving forward, finding solutions, this is abc 7 news. >> we are trying to get home an see family and friends in buffalo. we have been canceled four times. karina: at 6:30, how the monster winter storm hitting the nation is being felt by bay area travelers. it has been a rough week for a lot of people traveling. good morning. we are starting with a look at the weather.

you are from buffalo originally. lisa: how did i do that? karina: thankfully, you did not have plans to travel out east. so many people have been stuck at the airport waiting for days. lisa: and the winds have been really rough. they get that lake-effect snow and when the lake is not frozen, it dumps on the area. we are fortunate to have hazy conditions and our air quality not the best. we are looking at that fog drifting in from the central valley to the east bay where we have quarter-mile visibility in fairfield, just over one mile in concorde, and santa rosa half-mile visibility. this is walnut creek. air quality has not been great in the south bay. monday things will change as rain moves in. here is the current look where we have the sensitive groups in the south bay with that orange level. 45 belmont with mild conditions toward the bay. 50 downtown, 44 napa, so it w

take a minute for that fog to clear. once it does we are back into that hazy sun. upper 50's by noon inland, 60's around the bay, mid-60's santa rosa. looking at a cloudy monday. the rain arrives monday night. karina: here is a live look at san francisco international airport where the number of canceled flights reached triple digits last night. it is the effect of bad weather. nationwide, 4300 domestic flights were canceled. that is an improvement from friday when nearly 6000 were canceled. travelers we spoke to say they feel like they are spending more time waiting then traveling. >> we are just trying to get home and see family, friends in buffalo. we have been canceled four times. now we are trying to get to newark so we can drive to buffalo. >> it is frustrating. i have not seen family for six months. karina: wow.

yesterday there was not just a travel rush but i shopping rush as people scrambled to pick up last minute things. >> we have about five more people. reporter: five more people? > we have a big family. [laughter] reporter: when did you start this list? >> yesterday. karina: the day before christmas. that is real procrastination. they say they are not just g, thest w for theea. developments, a judge is thrown out republican kari lake's challenge of her loss in the arizona governor's race. she was defeated by katie hobbs in the november election. lake claimed misconduct saying they were intentional problems with polling places. on saturday the judge ruled there is no convincing evidence to support that. lake was among the most vocal 2022 republicans supporting donald trump's election claims,

which she made the centerpiece of her campaign. five suspects have been arrested for a deadly shooting at the mall of america that happened friday night. minnesota police say there was a fight amongst nine people when one pulled a gun and began shooting. all suspects are teenagers. the chief showing his frustration on the situation. >> we have an incident where if someone decides they want to pull out a gun and shoot somebody with complete lack of disrespect for human life, i still to stop that. it is absolutely ridiculous. i cannot think of another word. this is flat out stupid. karina: the victim killed was 19 years old. the largest shopping center said in october it was testing a weapons detection system at one of its entrances. happening today, nurses at

summit medical center will continue their strike. they will be walking the picket line through january 2 in berkeley and oakland. it will be the third strike by the nurses this year. they are demanding a wage increase, which the hospitals call unsustainable. they also raise concerns over working conditions, continuing education and benefits. in less than half an hour you can finally watch the disney park's magical christmas day. . -- carl schmidt's caught up with more. reporter: the magical christmas day parade is part of sony traditions. almost as important tamales. you have traditions that you want to pass on? >> i eat tamales. reporter: or? >> i make tamales. reporter: the black-eyed peas

at 1.i could barely breathe. reporter: with so many at the hospital because of the flu, rsv or covid, public health officials want you to know that if you get covid, you should ask about getting paxlovid. doctors say paxil that can reduce the risk of severe illness or death from covid 1990%. >> there are data to that could benefit more than are using it. reporter: more people could be eligible because of physical inactivity, obesity, smoking, depression, asthma or diabetes. it is free. it is a game changer helping people recover more quickly. >> it does decrease the number of days people feel ill. reporter: the federal government previously recommended paxlovid for those 50 and over or those with certain conditions. california public health

back to you. karina: thank you. let's get a check on the forecast. i know that you are tracking a system that will bring in lots of rain. lisa: that's right. we are tracking several wet weather systems aimed at northern california. you can see the activity in the pacific. high-pressure building and allowing for another mild start. but with the light easterly winds we are looking at that fog into the east bay. dense fog advisory, north bay interior and quarter of a mile by the delta. have that spare the air alert today. 43 oakland, 44 union city with 50 downtown. it is mild along the shoreline. look at this gorgeous view from the roof camera.

the coastal flood advisory through 2:00 this afternoon for the king tides. the night into tuesday. there is the minor coastal flooding in the low-lying areas of the bayshore's, mill valley up through highway 37. this is a level 2 into tuesday. wind gusting up to 50 miles per hour. we could see localized flooding and ponding on the roadways. high clouds today and more tomorrow should inhibit some of that dense fog. into monday we are looking at more cloud cover. the north bay could see spo showers and then by the evening here comes the heavier rain. mild conditions not only in the bay area and rain in the sierra nevada but by tuesday morning spotty showers and could even see a thunderstorm.

rainfall amounts are pretty intense from a couple of inches in the coastal hills. we could see excessive rainfall in sonoma county. we certainly need the rain. scattered showers behind it and maybe some downpours but it is the next system new year's eve that could bring another atmospheric river event with o of rain. the winds are light throughout the day. as we look at that systegeing ce gusty winds. winter storm watch through tuesday night starting at 7000 feet, the snow. we are going to have heavy and then transition to snow for one or two feet through the next seven days. 65 san jose and christmas

karina: a christmas miracle for a family in north carolina. their dog, who was missing for two years, was found 400 miles away. the six-year-old dog disappeared in 2020 but the day before christmas she was found in florida. she had a tracking chip which helped the humane society find her owner. >> it means a lot. it has given me a newfound hope in the holidays and hope in
