the driving ban is effect because all over the county we've seen dozens and dozens of scenes where cars are left in the middle of busy streets and intersections. at one point, emergency help was not on the way, as even the rescuers needed rescuing. this weekend, the historic arctic blast and winter storm sweeping across the country, leaving at least 39 dead. >> there is substantial, significant, and devastating loss of life as a result of this winter storm. >> reporter: the city of buffalo, paralyzed after more than three feet of snow. for the first time in the city's history the fire department, not able to respond to calls. >> think about looking just a few feet in front of you, at a sheet of white. >> reporter: ten deaths there and at least 17 across new york state. this man finding a mountain of white after finally being able to open his door. >> four feet against the door. >> reporter: many in buffalo comparing this storm to the blizzard of 1977. >> we have surpassed the scale of that storm in its intensity,

the longevity, the ferocity of the winds. >> reporter: the city's airport shut down and not scheduled to reopen until tomorrow. roads blocked by vehicles stuck. rescuers even having trouble navigating the conditions. thousands still without power and heat. rescue and recovery efforts still ongoing. many missing christmas, helping ohers dig out. drivers facing treacherous conditions across the country. this couple trapped on interstate 71 in central kentucky, spending christmas in their car. >> almost 12 hours. >> almost 12 hours. >> reporter: relying on the kindness of strangers for food. >> we each got a water from the semi truck driver. just the sandwich and a granola bar from him. >> yeah. thank god for him. >> reporter: in holland, michigan, roads are littered with abandoned cars. in illinois, several people were injured in this eight-vehicle crash. >> this guy is close to jackknife. look. >> reporter: and a 50-vehicle

pileup killing four in ohio. over the weekend, ten deaths reported. >> this is a reminder what can happen when you get behind the wheel and try to drive in bad weather conditions. >> reporter: now the driving ban was supposed to be lifted this morning. it was extended. the buffalo airport will be closed until tuesday. janai? >> all right. thanks to you, mona. joining us now is new york state highway superintendent, steven nigrelli. thank you so much for being with us this morning. let's start with -- the buffalo police department, said many of the deaths occurred in and around cars. hundreds of people were rescued from their cars. where do things stand right now? what's it been like trying to locate anyone else that's been struck out there? >> when the storm hit, it was complete zero visibility and many of the motorists had to pp. they were stranded in their vehicles. where we are right now, the storm is lifting. we're doing a vehicle-by-vehicle search with our partners from buffalo police and fire.

it's a task force-type mentality with a lot of agencies assisting our local partners. it's that point in the operation where we're literally going vehicle-by-vehicle, searching for people who are abandoned in their cars. >> as you guys have been working on these rescues, it got to a point where some first responders actually weren't able to respond to calls because of roads that were impassable. how was that? >> not only were first responders not able to respond, they were actually the ones trapped. while going out to assist our motorists and fellow citizens in western new york, many first responders, ambulance, fire trucks, police, our troopers, were stuck and had to stay in their vehicles until we could rescue the rescuers. >> in a city where you guys are used to multiple snowstorms like this every year. what makes this one so different?

>> we are a hearty folk here in western new york and we're used to a lot of snow, but what made this so different is it was arctic-like temperatures, zero temperatures, feels-like temperatures of negative 20. winds, i think the peak gust was 79 miles per hour, with snow accumulation. and that persistent snow band, the lake-effect snow band parked itself over a certain region of western new york, primarily the city of buffalo, amherst and lancaster. it didn't really move. some of these roads, janai looked like parking lots with tractor-trailers, fire trucks, a lot of cars sprinkled everywhere, which now that makes the recovery and re-opening so much more difficult. we have to tow the vehicles out, search them, tow them and get the plows to clear the roads out. >> a lot a matter of life and death in some places. thank you so much, superintendent, for being with us. gio, over to you. >> an unbelievable situation. janai, thank you. the monster storm created christmas weekend travel chaos with thousands of flights due to the cold and the snow.

elwyn lopez is live at hartsfield-jackson airport in atlanta, which had the most cancellations and delays in the country. elwyn, good morning. >> reporter: hey, gio, good morning. many hoping to spend the holidays with family were instead celebrating at the airport. many this morning still stranded trying to make their way home. this morning, the holiday travel nightmare, stranding hundreds of thousands passengers. the freezing conditions halting festivity plans coast-to-coast. atlanta leading the way with flights scrapped christmas day. there were over 3,000 cancellations and more than 6,500 delayed. >> we were supposed to take off at 10:00 a.m. this morning in denver. now, it's 6:00 p.m. here. >> reporter: the faa expects operations to gradually recover. for many families, the chaos in the skies meant spending the holidays alone. >> our zoom christmas party is plan "b." >> reporter: alaska airlines saying it will take multiple days to get those stranded the

their destination. >> all of the flights are booked. i'm still here waiting. >> reporter: buffalo's airport remains closed until tuesday morning after more than two feet of snow and 70-mile-per-hour wind gusts forced it to shut down for days. in seattle, the wintry woes drew lines of travelers on christmas eve. runways shut down for more than five hours. this is the coldest christmas in georgia since 1989. the good news is that temperatures are expected to climb. we could see up to 60 degrees on thursday. mary, hopefully that warm-up will help passengers who are still stranded. >> a bit of welcome news there. elwyn, thank you. now, to breaking news overnight. four power substations in washington state vandalized, including one set ablaze overnight, knocking out power on christmas. zohreen shah has more. zohreen, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, mary. officials this morning are urgently searching for a suspect or suspects who vandalized four substations creating a christmas

nightmare for 14,000 customers in washington state yesterday leaving people without power for much of the holiday. officials at one of the substations say they arrived to find a fire that was set intentionally. at others, they say there was forced entry and equipment was vandalized causing a power outage in the area. right now it's unclear if this was a coordinated attack on the grid, but there were other recent attacks on power twsubstations attked no ago and six separate attacks on substations in washington and oregon in recent weeks, including on thanksgiving day. even though we don't know the motive on those cases. the department of homeland security warned that domestic extremists could target the power grid. mary? >> lots of questions still remain. zohreen, thank you. janai? now, to the so-called

tripledemic and what may be a glimmer of hope. some signs in the middle of the holiday season that perhaps the worst may be over, especially when it comes to rsv and the flu. erielle reshef is here with more. >> reporter: as the clock ticks down to new year's, covid cases are climbing, stoking worry of a post-holiday surge. >> we have the unfortunate mix of gatherings, mobility, colder and drier temperature, while viruses are circulating. this leads to a surge. this is what we're concerned about heading into january. >> reporter: the u.s. with the highest total confirmed cases worldwide, topping 100 million, but that number likely far higher due to unreported at-home testing. the elderly bearing the brunt of the upswing. those 65 and older making up about 60% of all hospitalizations in december. and vaccine fatigue has crept in, with just 37% of that age group, having received their updated booster shot. but this morning, there are tentative signs the so-called tripledemic may be easing, with rsv cases leveling off and flu cases remaining high, but

declining in much of the country. welcome relief for hospitals that have been stretched thin. >> we actually are seeing more than 1,000 patients per month than we saw last year, which that's definitely a significant amount of patients. we have to look at all of our space in general. we expanded into hallways. we're seeing patients in nontraditional spaces right now. >> reporter: experts caution, with holiday gatherings, keeping people indoors, and covid infections, that trend could reverse. there seems to be some relief in the tripledemic, but many hospitals are still strained. and experts warn that the covid infections rising could mean that some places in california and new jersey are reconsidering masking in some public indoor spaces. gio? >> we know you will keep following this for us.

erielle, thank you so much. we're going to turn to the war in ukraine. vladimir putin claiming he is willing to negotiate, even as russia unleashed more deadly attacks overnight. they were targeting civilians. britt clennett is on the ground in ukraine with more. britt, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, gio. ukraine attacked an air base deep inside moscow this morning. moscow saying it shot down a drone and the falling debris killed at least three people. the moment ukraine strikes a bomber base captured in video circulating online. moscow saying three technical staff were killed in the drone attack. the base is more than 300 miles from the ukrainian border. kyiv says it's used by russian planes to target ukraine. civilians in the ukrainian city bakhmut taking heavy fire. the attack just hours after a russian strike on christmas eve left at least 13 people dead and dozens injured in the city of kherson. president putin says he wants to come to the negotiating table, but a compromise seems unlikely. putin refuses to remove troops

from ukraine and kyiv says it will not give up an inch of territory. for those in ukraine this holiday season, it's bittersweet. local officials protecting a monument with sandbags and decorating it to look like a christmas tree with camouflage netting and lights. it's a symbol of ukrainian resolve, a way of saying, despite attacks by the russians, christmas is not canceled. these important traditions live on. many ukrainians are forced to spend the holiday season without heat or light. yet, ukrainian citizens refusing to let the darkness of war dampen their holiday spirit. ♪ taking to the subway to sing christmas carols amid air raid sirens. ukraine president zelenskyy warning his citizens not to let their guard down. ready for any scenario. kyiv is on alert, with russia able to launch missiles at any moment, in retaliation for that air base attack. mary? >> britt, thank you. to the battle over the border in a political move, busloads of migrants dropped off on christmas eve outside the vice president's home. maryalice parks has more. maryalice, this is not the first time we've seen migrants used like this to make a political point. >> reporter: exactly. mary, good morning. it was one of the coldest christmas eves on record here in washington, only about 18 degrees at night when the buses of migrants arrived. and you can see from the pictures and the video, that many of the migrants dropped off in front of the vice president's house were not even in jackets, definitely not prepared for the cold weather. you can see there were children in the group. the aid workers who met the migrants told us there were more than 100 people who arrived on multiple buses. the white house, pointing the finger right back at texas governor greg abbott. saying in a statement, governor abbott abandoned children on the

the professor was somehow tied to the november murders of four college students. according to the lawsuit, tiktoker ashley guillard posting six videos claiming that professor rebecca schofield was responsible for the four students' deaths. the suit says the videos has been viewed millions of times. stating that guillard claims that schofield ordered the execution of the four students. guillard is not backing down and says she looks forward to any upcoming trial. this, the most high-profile example of online speculation that's been denounced by authorities who have urged the public to avoid sharing misinformation or rumors about the case. >> we want to say, we're the official source of information. and anything that comes from other sources, is either rumor or speculation. >> reporter: the moscow police still have not named any suspects and have not recovered the murder weapon used in the stabbing deaths of the four students during the early morning hours of november 13th. according to the lawsuit, schofield, who chairs the

history department of the university of idaho, had never met any of the four murdered students, nor had any of the four been in her classes. despite receiving cease and desist letters, the texas tiktoker has continued to post videos. schofield's attorney says, the statements made about professor schofield are false. pla plain and simple. this lawsuit is to protect the professor's safety and reputation. the university of idaho weighing in saying the lawsuit is a private matter, u of i does not condone spreading false information and finds this allegation to be the worst we've seen. no arrests have been made in this case. no suspects identified. this morning, the university is on their winter break, but police stress the investigation will continue while classes are out. they say they have received around 12,000 tips since this investigation began. gio? >> 12,000 tips and still such a mystery. mola, thank you so much.

for anyone who sees the new year as a chance to focus on mental health? >> the first place we can start, is focusing on self-care. it is been a ten-minute uninterrupted walk without your phone or catching up with phones. self-care is focusing on things that improve your mental and physical health. and many people will think, this sounds selfish. in the converse, it's actually not. the same way we take care of plants and gardens. if you want something to grow, you have to tend to it. you can start by making a list of things that matter to you and plugging them into your schedule, similar how you do your to-dos and work and making it consistent every week. >> not selfish to spend time on yourself. and something that may be simple, simply being kind to yourself. >> our internal dialogue is very crucial. we can quickly sabotage ourselves. that can add unnecessary stress and make it difficult to find solutions. so, first and foremost, identifying the negative thoughts to limit them or replace them with other thoughts. reminding yourself that you have worth and value, and that you're

doing your best. one tactic that i enjoy, talk to yourself the same way you talk to your friends. sometimes we get better advice to our friends than ourselves. >> and we hear sleep a lot. you have to make it a priority. >> you have to. sleep is important for our brain function. our brain health. on average, we need seven to nine hours of sleep at night. some things you can do, include making sure you have a consistent sleep schedule. the body doesn't know if it's the weekend or the weekday. avoiding meals and caffeine before you get to bed. and most importantly, getting rid of the phone as early as you can. >> that's such a hard one. i know i'm guilty of that. limiting that screen time. and this next tip you have, is crucial. do not be afraid to ask for help. >> absolutely. making sure you -- first and foremost, acknowledge your

local icon meek mill coming together for 35 children, whose families have been impacted by the criminal justice system. the day began at the eagles' training facility, where the kids got to show off their stuff on the field before signing a special one-day contract with the team. made official by general manager howie roseman. >> what do you think you will bring to the team? >> everything. everything i can bring. >> reporter: the event was organized by the reform alliance, a nonprofit organization co-founded by meek mill and fanatics founder, mike ruben. what was the inspiration for this day? >> it was this guy. he said, when i get out of prison, we need to do something about this. me, myself, jay-z, we came together to say we're going to start an organization to change the broken provision. >> reporter: it's been creating a pathway for 650,000 people to exit the criminal justice system in the last four years. seeking change through awareness, legislation and serving communities in need. what does it mean to you to give back in such a substantial way

to people who need the help? >> it means everything for me. i grew up in a single-parent home, with minimum support. to be able to give support to others means everything in the world. this is my purpose, standing on it to the fullest. >> reporter: all these children have seen at least one parent incarcerated because of technical violations. what is your favorite thing about football? >> throwing. >> reporter: 5-year-old amir was born while his mother was in jail. she remained incarcerated until he was 2 1/2 years old. now, she is grateful for the resources reform has provided her and a chance to be with her boy. >> it was a surprise. it means a lot they would do something for my family. >> reporter: the eagles, with super bowl dreams, jumped in on their day off to make it special. >> we have a platform and want to use that in a positive way to give them hope, encouragement. to see the smiles on their faces and give them the belief in themselves to do special things, too.

>> yeah. really pumped about it. you know, "will trent" is a series based on a series of books that follows will trent, two is a special agent in the gbi, the georgia bureau of investigation. he has a unique perspective on crime. and because of his complicated childhood, he sort of has developed an interesting way of how he solves crime. visually, a lot. he's got the highest clearance rate at the gbi. he's a compelling, complicated and a fun character to play and dive into. it's been fun to play him. >> we have a clip. let's check it out. >> my neighbor died three days ago. i'm just dropping her off. >> just dropping her. like a sack of old clothes? >> you work with animals because you don't get along with people? i rescued a dog. that's viewed as a good deed. >> agent trent wants a parade. >> i don't want a parade.

i just want to get on with my day. you rehome animals. so, rehome. >> it does always work. it does. you said that this was the first time you had to do a southern accent. and it was actually inspired by a famous rapper? >> yeah. i used, you know -- i wanted to be authentic to the part. i'm a new yorker. and so, this character, will trent, is based in atlanta. i did a lot of work and research on really developing a sound that i felt would really reflect this character's background. and so, we used a model. and we used andre 3000. it's not -- i'm not mimicking what he's done. it's more of an inspiration. he's got some very cool qualities of his sound in his voice and his dialect. we wanted to incorporate some of that into will trent. >> andre 3000 inspiring a little southern drawl, okay. >> yeah. >> speaking of music stars. you are making an appearance during the rockin' eve broadcast. which performance are you most looking forward to? >> you have to remind me. i know there's a gang of people. i actually said originally, i
