and the rain has just arrived in the north bay. for the very latest let's go to abc7news meteorologist francis. >> we have been seeing rain hit san francisco right now. live doppler 7 looping over the last two hours. moved in earlier than we thought and here is what it looks like. rain falling over the bay into the east bay at this point and orange and red, those are the heavier rain falls. rainfall amounts are impressive. we are talking one to three inches of rain for many locations around the bay area. get ready, the heaviest rainfall is on its way right now. on our storm impact scale, we are making this three out of five. it is a strong one. downpours and heavy rain overnight into the early morning hours and strong gusting wind and flooding is likely. thunderstorms are possible. of here is the timing. notice most of it is in the north bay during the evening hours and by midnight it does

start to come toward the south bay, but that red and orange is where we will see a downpour. the good thing as it moves fairly quickly. it's lives south 4 a.m. tuesday until 8 a.m.. messy commute and then it clears out by the afternoon. in addition to the heavy rain we got strong wind. wind advisory in effect for higher elevations. east bay, mountains, north bay mountains and along the coast, where gusts could reach 60 miles per hour. i will have more on that the seven-day forecast and when we can get some breaks in the rain coming up. >> sounds like it is going to be intense. thank you. people in the north bay have begun preparing for the storm. we continue with stephanie sierra in santa rosa. >> from christmas cleanup to storm prep. santa rosa resident stephen crane is keeping busy. >> there is always preparation

getting ready because the streets could flood. in west county the rivers can flood. just try to get some of the leaves because the leaves, if they are not maintained, will run into the street and block the street and then we get street flooding. >> installing double pane glass windows to withstand gusting wind. when a level 3 storm is looming, crane is ready and so are his neighbors. >> i'm sad we will not be able to go outside and golf but otherwise, just buckling down the hatches. we have heard about the storm. of our advanced prep is staying home. >> james and his partner are extending their holiday visit to avoid a mess on the roads overnight. rain after 6 p.m. with the heaviest front of the storm coming in between 1:00 and 7:00 a.m.. >> we just went to the storm so we do not have to go out tonight and then later tomorrow, early tomorrow. planning ahead. best to stay off the road.

across the bay area gear up. whether it is securing christmas decor, clearing the drain, stocking up on sandbags or in tom's case a sump pump to help clear the water underneath his house. >> pump it out onto the street. >> last year's atmospheric river, a december 2020 one storm, brought widespread flooding and power outages across the bay area. more of the same is expected tonight bringing a messy morning commute with wind gusts between 35 and 50 miles per hour. businesses are bracing for power outages and flash floods. >> downtown there was flooding with the last storm. if we don't have electricity we will use candles. >> for others it will be a cozy night in. >> with him, always. >> we will be sleeping good, so we will be grateful for the rain. >> a wind advisory is in effect for portions of the bay area, including the north bay mountains starting at 10:00 tonight through 7:00 tomorrow morning, so be sure to secure

any loose holiday decor. in the north bay, stephanie sierra abc 7 news. >> southwest airlines is apologizing tonight to customers and employees for challenges it calls unacceptable. 70% of southwest flights were canceled as of 8 p.m. eastern time. 60% are canceled across the country tomorrow, including oakland international airport. abc7news reporter melanie woodrow explains what is going on. >> for weary southwest passengers at oakland international airport, all signs pointed to a bad day. after a four hour delay they did not make it home to oakland. she was one of the lucky ones. mike's flight to phoenix canceled. >> i could tell when i got out of the car when i was dropped off that there was an issue. there was a line snaking all the way to oakland airport. >> in its latest update southwest airlines is working to

recover from operational challenges following consecutive days of severe weather. captain casey is the president of southwest airlines pilot associations and a captain of southwest. >> it is been a catastrophic failure. our processes, i.t., infrastructure was not there to support the operation. unfortunately our customers are bearing the brunt. >> unlike other airlines that use a hub and spoke system southwest flies point-to-point. >> we have pilots and flight attendants who do not have hotels, who they truly just do not know where they are. >> kingsbury heard that firsthand. bonnie's bahamas vacation was also canceled. >> i was not stranded in austin, that would be a worse situation. >> stranded passengers at oakland have few options when it comes to their bags. >> announcements on the flight speaker that if your flight was canceled, it is going to be a one and a half to two and a half hour wait just to get your luggage off the flight. >> we just decided to leave her

mentality, assisting local partners. >> buffalo new york has been hit the hardest. 49 inches of snow piled up on the ground in three days. 27 people have died from the storm in western new york state. the good news is that the storm is now moving out of the area. be sure to watch us on air and online tomorrow morning starting at 5:00 a.m. for the latest weather and road conditions for you. drew, come aussie and sue will be at the top of the morning commute. it will be pretty messy because of the storm coming in. the san francisco fire department confirms multiple people or private residence overdosed on christmas day. if sfpd says they got the call 2:30 p.m. for six patients all initially incredible condition. it happened on post street, five people were taken to hospital. one people did not require transportation. all of the victims are adults. officials could not confirm that fentanyl was involved.

a strike by registered nurses at hospitals is in its third day. the nurses walked out the job and will continue their strike until january 2. they will bring in the new year on the picket line. the work stoppage of effects the summit medical center campuses in berkeley and oakland. negotiations for a new contract have been going on since june of last year. nurses say they are worried about working conditions and also benefits. >> we are out here today because we have been in bargaining for 18 months. and the hospital is not willing to really bargain with us for some of the things that for most of the things that we think are important. >> a spokesperson for alta bates says the hospitals continue to find care. nurses are seeking a 40% pay raise, which it says is unsustainable. all right, a lot more coming up tonight. unrest is made in the east bay after a man is caught on video going on several racist and

take it seriously, but afterwards, it kind of started to hit me that this was serious. >> like what happened in danville the hate speech escalates. >> japanese or korean? >> i'm korean. >> [indiscernibl >> after our story christmas night, san ramon police say they were inundated with tips from the public. that helped lead to the arrest of a denver man with ties to the bay area. both sets of victims realize the power of speaking out. >> making it seem like not a big deal, i think a lot of asian people in general do that. i want to bring more awareness to this and i want other people to realize how bad it is. >> i just want people to learn that hate crimes against asian americans are a very real thing. >> the individual who we are choosing not to name our show his face because he has not been charged was booked on two counts of hate crimes that are pending.

>> happening now, we are in an alert through the end of today. restrictions have been in place since last thursday. the unhealthy air quality means no wood or fire burning because of pollution in the area. all of this rain that is coming to help watch some of that out. francis is tracking the storm for us. it is a three. >> storm level 3 on abc's exclusive storm impact scale, so you know it's going to be a big one. here's a look at live doppler 7 satellite and it suggests within the past hour we sare rain moving into the bay area. see some of the heavier rainfall now in orange and yellow. over san francisco and moving into parts of the east bay, layering falling over parts of the bay. the golden gate bridge, this is that light to moderate rain. this is more moderate right now

at the golden gate bridge. you can see it coming down. most temperatures in the 50's in san francisco and oakland, low 50's. san jose 54. half moon bay 55. letter rainfall across the san mateo bridge. that was the area in greenwood live doppler 7 and it's a good thing cars are slowing down as they make their way across the span. temperatures are in the 40's in some spots, like nevada, napa, 48, fairfield, one of the cooler ones at 45 degrees. on our storm impact scale, it is three out of five tonight to early tomorrow morning. times of heavy rain, downpours are likely. also some strong, gusting wind. this does mean flooding is expected and thunderstorms are possible. here is a look at the forecast animation. most of the rainfall during the evening hours, the brunt is generally in the north bay and by midnight it starts to slide to the rest of the bay area but that area of red is a sudden downpour. it moves quickly, but that is why the north bay will get more

rain, especially in higher elevations. tuesday morning commute, that will be a mess. you can see red and yellow and orange. so you can tune into our morning news and keep track of that. by lunchtime, most of the rainfall is south of san francisco and then we get a break in the afternoon and that lingers into wednesday. there is a flood watch in effect due to excessive runoff. there could be street flooding, trains clogged for the areas in the north bay and along the coast. look out for flooding in the low-lying locations. wind advisory also in place with gusts up to 60 miles per hour. the strongest wind will be between three and 5 a.m.. this is for the higher elevations and the coast. not a great day to head to the beach but there is a beach hazard in effect up to 17 feet to tomorrow morning. after that into wednesday we could see 20 to 25 foot breakers so be extra careful if you are near the beaches. also not a good idea to travel

to the sierra. be prepared to be stopped for a while. there is a high wind warning in effect tonight or tomorrow with gusts of up to 85 miles per hour over the bridges and that turns into a winter storm warning which goes all the way through wednesday. you want to hold off traveling to and from the sierra until wednesday afternoon. up to 40 inches of snow in some spots. overnight lows mainly in the 50's around the bay area and tomorrow, mainly upper 50's. here is the accuweather 7 day forecast. the strongest tonight to tomorrow, a break on wednesday and a series of storms thursday and friday into new year's eve. we will keep track of that new year's eve or cast for midnight because it looks dry on sunday. >> excellence. today is the first day of kwanzaa, a ceremony marked the occasion today under the rotunda and san francisco city hall. the seven-day festival celebrates african-american culture. each day has a theme based on seven principles.
