right now in america this morning travel nightmare christmas, one of the worst airline meltdowns in history leaves passengers stranded, some with no relief in sight. southwest canceling thousands of flights, airports overflowing with undelivered luggage customers waiting five hours or more for customer service. why the weather isn't the only thing to blame. blizzard of the century, the deadliest storm and more than 50 years, slamming buffalo roads unpassable the airport closed until tomorrow morning. the story of a baby who needs a ventilator to breathe his home losing power. we hear from his parents how they kept him alive. breaking overnight the newly elected congressman accused of lying about his

morning. planes are grounded. passengers are stranded, some of them for days to come. and now the federal government says it will examine this travel nightmare, calling the cancelations unacceptable and take a look at the luggage piling up at the airports and the weather isn't the only thing to blame. this morning, one of the worst airli. it's bee castphic. it's been a failure at every level. um at southwest more than 3900 flights were canceled in the us yesterday, but just one airline southwest accounted for more than 70% of those cancelations. the airline canceling at least 2900 of its flights more than 70% of its entire schedule today. hardly any better, with 60% of its flights, not taking off. my daughter is in new york city all by herself, you know very sad ruin our christmas what started as weather related cancelations quickly snowballed into a system wide meltdown. we

end up with flight crews and airplanes that are out of place and not in the cities that they need to be in to continue to run our operations and because southwest does not partner with any other airlines, passengers could not be rebooked on other flights. the line for southwest ticket counters snaking through airports extending outside terminals. in some cases, the airline turned two busses to carry travelers. you realize you're on southwest, not greyhounds? yes yeah, but many frustrated passengers waited hours only to be told there was nothing that could be done for them. the customer service line jammed with wait times, five hours or more. at one point, the phone servers crashed. leaving passengers and airline crew members lost and confused. we have pilots. we have flight attendants who don't have hotels who they truly just don't know where they are. the department of transportation overnight called southwest rate of cancelations unacceptable and said it will examine whether cancelations were controllable. and if southwest is complying

with this customer service plan , one man was told the earliest he could get a flight is thursday the situation, possibly affecting his health. going home. we didn't pray. we didn't rain. no medication for 45 days. it could take one week or longer for the flight scheduled to return to normal. president biden has approved an emergency declaration for western new york after one of the worst blizzards on record. buffalo's airport is still shut down more than 500. people have been rescued, but officials fear the death toll will rise. abc is justin finch has the latest justin. good morning. andrew. good morning. at least 28 people have died from this storm, and officials say much needed federal assistance is now on the way. this morning, western new york reeling from the deadliest blizzard and at least 50 years. blizzard is the one for the ages . certainly it is the blizzard of the century, more than a dozen people have been found dead outside in the cold. officials expect that death toll

will rise once first responders can reach all neighborhoods already rescued more than 500 people while battling hurricane force winds and seven ft snow drifts in the streets. at one point, nearly every fire truck in buffalo was stuck. and now we're hearing the good and all this how good samaritan stepped in to help their neighbors. i heard him screaming for help. kyra archery pleaded for help on facebook after finding a man screaming in pain outside our home brought the man who was suffering from severe frostbite into her home, but she couldn't get through to 911 or the national guard. can't do no more. i just can't have this man. ah loses. is life in my house. i have did everything that i can do. this man needs help. good samaritans heard her call rushing to her home. stretcher stretcher, carrying the man to the hospital. then there's shahida mohammed, who lost electricity over the

weekend, she was desperate to keep her one year old baby alive after his ventilator stopped, local officials say they responded to the home but didn't find anyone there sitting there literally crying, wishing someone would just not one my door literally and you know if they said they not in. no one was there if they know a mother and father and child were in there. they should have broke the door down. we were in there . we needed help, and her husband say they manually administered breaths to their baby for two days until good samaritans came to their rescue and more good news. shahida says her baby is doing well, but thousands are still without power. many roads are still impassable and the airport is closed until tomorrow. andrew all right, justin. thank you. the lights are back on in washington state after four power substations were vandalized over the weekend. thousands lost power, and officials are trying to figure out who is responsible. us officials recently warned about

live this week on good morning america. this video and avalanche caught on camera in the alps, the massive wall of snow can crashing down at 8000 ft, bearing for skiers. it took hundreds of rescuers, eight helicopters and several dogs to find the skiers and bring them all to safety. and then a similar scene playing out here in the us when an avalanche trapped a group of snowboarders in central colorado several people were rescued, but sadly one man did not survive. we turn now to the crisis of the southern border and new information about the migrants% dropped off outside the home of vice president kamala harris over the weekend. this morning, days after busses of migrants were dropped off in 18 degree cold on christmas eve outside

the vice president's home in washington, a spokesperson for texas governor greg abbott, confirming the migrants came from texas, saying they willingly chose to go. many of the migrants, including children were not wearing proper winter coats and clothing, abbott's communications director, saying the migrants signed a voluntary consent waiver in multiple languages. abbot recently spoke to abc, martha raddatz about the bus drop off in multiple cities removed them to locations that self identified as sanctuary cities that have the capability and the desire to help out these migrants. and so that's exactly what's taking place. the white house calling the move on christmas eve, a shameful stunt , but abbott's office firing back slamming the white house has a bunch of hypocrites. the back and forth comes as both sides away to ruling from the supreme court entitled 42, a pandemic era policy that allows the government to spell asylum seekers on public health grounds divided administration argues that covid emergency is over, abbott says otherwise, whether it's covid or some other issue
