buffalo. you can see a car there still completely buried in the snow after that storm that crippled the city, even more snow is expected there. we'll have a live report coming up soon. but first, janai, we are going to get to the southwest airlines debacle. the department of transportation now investigating the mass cancellation of flights as so many passengers, they are still trying to get home, and alex perez is live at o'hare airport in chicago with the story. alex, good morning. what a mess. >> reporter: hey, good morning, gio. yeah, frustrated passengers are stuck at airports across the country. the return home from christmas for many has become a flat out nightmare. this morning -- >> they said no one's getting on a flight, southwest flight for four days and they said we can't help you go home. >> reporter: southwest melting down in the wake of the christmas holiday. >> christmas was ruined. this was the worst christmas ever. >> reporter: while 3,800 flights were canceled across the country after the punishing winter storm, nearly three-quarters were southwest flights and the company has already canceled over 2,500 flights today with more misery expected this week. >> it's been catastrophic.

it is simply a failure of southwest management. >> reporter: when asked about the collapse, a spokesperson for southwest blaming the weather. >> i think it's just the sheer size of this storm. it's just the fact that this one started west, swept east and impacted almost every single one of our largest airports that put us in a position where we struggled to recover and we struggled to get our flight crews and airplanes where they needed to be. >> reporter: in a statement the company vowing, we'll work to make things rigt for those we have let down. but this morning federal officials are launching an investigation into the chaotic response. the department of transportation saying it is concerned by southwest's unacceptable rates of cancellations and delays and reports of a lack of prompt customer service adding, it will investigate whether cancellations were controllable. the airline's own employees blaming the company for not being better prepared. some southwest flight crews are being left on hold for up to ten hours while they wait for scheduling instructions.

from weary travelers sleeping on airport floors to unclaimed luggage pileups, the harsh reality was everywhere. >> unfortunately, our next available seats for rebooking are for the 31st and beyond. >> reporter: loudspeakers warning flyers in houston shouldn't expect to get a flight out for at least six days. others boarding crowded buses chartered by southwest. one bus headed from raleigh to nashville, a 500-mile ride that will take more than eight hours. >> i definitely did not anticipate having to go from an hour and a half flight to taking an eight-hour road trip. >> reporter: and it's expected to take more than a week of playing catch-up for southwest flight schedules to get back on track. guys? >> more than a week. what a total disaster. alex, thank you. gio, you, of course, are a transportation expert. we were talking about this earlier. we have never seen anything like this. >> the experts i've spoken to

have never seen anything like this. it is unprecedented. when you look at the other airlines and what happened yesterday, they weren't anywhere near what was happening with southwest. so rightfully so the department of transportation is says, wait a minute, why did that happen? what needs to happen now and we're going to see because in november we know they did fine some airlines over refunds so that's very possible in something like this. we don't know, but we'll keep following this. it's crazy. >> the idea of people getting on a bus for eight hours when a flight couldn't take off is unbelievable. >> unbelievable. well, now, we are turning to the brutal holiday storm blamed for more than 50 deaths. more than -- dozens of those, at least 29 in new york state alone and the city of buffalo still paralyzed. mona kosar abdi is back braving the cold for us as more snow is expected. good morning, mona. >> reporter: janai, good morning. i'm on niagara street, one of the main streets in downtown buffalo. this part of the street has been reduced down to one lane going in both directions, but we're

seeing a lot more traffic this morning, even though a driving ban is still in place. now drivers and snow plows are having to navigate around cars like this that have been abandoned here, some since before christmas. this morning, the death toll in western new york rising after what officials are calling the blizzard of the century. a winter nightmare unfolding. at least 51 dead nationwide. 29 in new york state alone. roads still impassable. forklifts used to clear vehicles. >> this blizzard is one for the ages. >> reporter: wanda brown steele's daughter among one of the victims found dead in her car after the snow rapidly piled up. >> it's so easy to ask yourself, why, god? why? >> reporter: emergency responders in buffalo fighting multiple house fires, leaving crews in a dangerous battle with both fire and ice.

more than 50 inches of snow have fallen in buffalo over the past three days. in many neighborhoods residents now turning to one another for lifesaving help. buffalo resident shakira aughtry took to social media after she heard joseph white in distress outside her home and brought him inside on sunday. >> i found him screaming for help. when i looked out the window, he was getting blowed up and down the street. it was out of control. >> reporter: aughtry updating social media taking white to the emergency room of erie county medical center on sunday with the help of strangers. and one mother with no electricity desperate to keep her baby alive when his ventilator suddenly stopped. speaking to our abc station wkbw. >> i was sitting there literally crying wishing someone would just knock on my door literally, and, you know, if they said they knock and no one was there, if they knew a mother and father and child were in there, they should have broke the door down. we were in there.

we needed help. >> reporter: shahida muhammad and her husband manually administered breaths to their infants for two days until good samaritans came to their aid. and elsewhere in the city, longtime residents opening up their homes to these visitors from half a world away after a knock on their door. >> they said we're part of a tour group from south korea and we have ten people in our vehicle and i said, get all of them inside our house right now. >> reporter: and all day yesterday we saw people coming back to their vehicles trying to get them out of the snow and good samaritans offering a helping help. now the airport is expected to re-open tomorrow. the airfield, guys, has been closed since monday. >> just an unbelievable toll that this storm has taken on the people of that city, mona, who are used to storms. thank you so much for that update. mary? the weather slam isn't over. the west is in now for a new big storm. will carr is in los angeles with what's on the way there. will, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, mary.

mother nature is packing another punch. we have an atmospheric river sweeping through and it's going to dump heavy rain and snow up and down the west coast. there's the concerns for flash flooding and here in california, 'some parts could see more than three feet of snow. there's also a high wind warning. 100-mile-an-hour winds from california to wyoming. there's going to be a lull midweek but then heading into the new year holiday we're expecting more heavy rain both here in los angeles and in san francisco. mary? >> the weather hits just keep coming. will, thank you. gio? all right, mary. in the south now the deep freeze is aggravating the ongoing water quality crisis in jackson, mississippi. thousands there are once again under a boil water alert and matt rivers joins us now with more on that. hey, matt, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, gio. people are frustrated, even angry in jackson, mississippi, as its tens of thousands of residents are once again asking, is their tap water safe to drink?

this morning, thousands of homes once again forced to boil their water in jackson, mississippi. a drop in water pressure in city systems on christmas eve prompting officials to issue the boil water notice on christmas morning. >> i don't know what to say. we don't have no water. we can't drink. we can't wash. we can't do nothing. >> reporter: a city statement saying, quote, we continue to struggle. the issue has to be significant leaks in the system that we have yet to identify. it's meant little to no water pressure for many for the holidays. >> frustrated because i'm paying my bill on time. frustrated. >> reporter: mississippi state capital has suffered through water quality issues for decades with city officials blaming among other things a severe lack of infrastructure investment. the chronic issues on full display this year, floods damaging city pumps in august that left residents without drinking water for weeks on end. >> the whole american dream of getting out and doing whatever you want to do, but then you have communities like jackson, like so many communities across

the country, who are still struggling with the most basic infrastructure problems. >> reporter: residents once again waiting in line for clean water and the federal government taking notice. right now negotiating with the city and state to mandate sweeping updates to water systems. now, the city's mayor says it could take more than $1 billion to really fix the city's issues, but there is some help on the way. just last week congress allocating hundreds of millions in its latest massive spending bill to try and improve jackson's water systems. gio? >> that's good news, matt. i was in houston during that last boil water order and it makes life very, very difficult. thank you for that report. janai? turning overseas now to the latest in ukraine where ukrainian forces are on the move to take back a key city and making moves on the diplomatic front as well. so let's go to britt clennett who is live in kyiv this morning. britt, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, janai. well, fierce battles are under way in the east, ukraine edging

closer to kreminna, a heavily fortified city in luhansk, and reports that russian forces have moved command posts ten miles from the front line. ukraine saying if russia loses that city, the entire line of defense there will fall. this amid new fears of retaliation of that attack, three russian service members killed there. ukraine hasn't claimed responsibility, but called the attack a consequence of the war. on the diplomatic front, kyiv says it aims to hold a peace summit by the end of february while ukraine is pushing for russia to be removed as a permanent member of the u.n. security council. the man who is leading the charge telling us in kyiv that world peace and world security is at stake. jane? >> so much is at stake, britt clennett, thanks for that update. mary. to asia now and that provocative action by north korea sending drones across the border into south korea which responded by scrambling fighter jets. marcus moore is tracking the

latest from london. marcus, good morning. >> reporter: mary, good morning. the frequency of these new moves by north korea is truly remarkable. it includes missile tests and for the first time in several years, according to officials, these north korean drones threatening south korea's airspace. this morning, south korea responding after it says its military detected five north korean drones entering its airspace. it is north korea's second aggressive move in just over a week. south korean defense officials say they caught four of the drones flying around this will island while one managed seoul. a senior official with the south korean joint chiefs of staff saying that violating the airspace is a clear provocation by north korea. this latest incursion into south korean airspace also prompting officials to temporarily suspend

commercial flights at two of the country's busiest airports. south korean officials say the military fired warning shots. they could not confirm that any of the drones were hit. south korea scrambling fighter jets and attack helicopters in response. officials promising they will keep reacting sternly to what they call north korea's provocations. though this is the first such incident in five years it comes just days after north korea fired two short-range ballistic missiles in south korea's direction. the moves raising tensions on the korean peninsula. north korea has conducted more missile tests this year than in any previous year. and overnight south korea's president criticized the military saying it lacked preparedness and training for these drones and he called for improvements to the country's air defenses and, mary, some observers suspect that north korea's recent provocations are meant to bring about negotiations to ease sanctions on the north. mary? >> so much at stake here, marcus, we know you'll keep a close eye on all of this. thank you. gio? now we have an amazing rescue story in maryland. a father and a son kayaking out into icy waters to help save a pilot whose small plane had crashed into a lake and morgan

norwood is right here in our studio with the incredible story. hey, morgan, good morning. >> good morning to you, gio. it came down to the second. think about how quickly hypothermia can set in. the pilot was standing on the wing of the sinking plane and the man and his son fought through the frozen lake getting there just before the icy waters nearly pulled that pilot under. >> i do have multiple civilians with kayaks. it's pretty iced out here. >> reporter: this morning a heroic rescue. >> the kayaks are pushing themselves across the ice. >> reporter: a maryland father and son leaping into action after they watched a small single-engine plane plummet into this frozen creek. >> he was heading right for us. >> reporter: the ice buildup on the water so thick that even police boats had trouble navigating. >> you're pushing the whole ice flow. just keep it nice and slow. >> reporter: but the man and his son grabbed kayaks and shovels to chisel their way through the ic >>n do it. i need a shootte

pilot standing chest deep on the wing. >> get out of the water. just get out of the water and just hold tight and i just pickaxed backward and got my kayak back onto the ice. he was out of the water. >> reporter: a department of natural resources crew was finally able to cut through the ice and reach them and bring the pilot back to shore. officials say he is recovering in the hospital this morning. >> hypothermia can set in within minutes. absolutely probably saved his life. >> just an incredible rescue. by crashing into the creek the pilot avoided several nearby houses and, guys, it's still unclear what caused that plane to go down but that crash is under investigation. >> really incredible rescue and really incredible to have morgan here in the flesh. morgan norwood, our news 1 correspondent out in l.a. just moved from the west coast to the best coast. welcome to new york. so great to have you. >> thank you. happy to be here.

the department of transportation is launching an investigation into southwest airlines' flight cancellation fiasco. the airline canceling thousands of flights over the holidays with, get this, at least 60% taken off the schedule today stranding thousands of passengers, some still days away from getting home. and the snow is still falling in buffalo this morning. the city paralyzed after a deep freeze and more than four feet of snow blanketing the city. the president declaring a state of emergency in new york as the west gets ready for a new storm with fears there of flash floods. the power is back in washington state after four power stations were vandalized there over the weekend putting thousands in the dark on christmas day. federal and state authorities are investigating there as well. and the l.a. chargers punched their ticket to the nfl playoffs beating the colts by a score of 20-3. the defense dominating not allowing the indianapolis colts

skiers in the australian alps. the heart-pounding video taken christmas day shows several members getting trapped prompting a massive search and rescue mission. 200 rescuers and 8 helicopters worked through the night to locate all ten of those skiers alive. here in the u.s. many americans are flocking to resorts and backcountry trails and the national skiers association saying 61 million people hit the slopes last season and while resorts use explosives to keep avalanches at bay, there are always dangers on the slopes. earlier this month 35-year-old travis haussener trapped for 45 minutes after an avalanche in utah. >> all of a sudden this slope collapsed and there was just a wall of snow coming at me. >> reporter: a rescue team on a helicopter unable to reach him. search and rescuers arriving to dig him out. experts say the best way to stay safe is to have a plan. i went to utah where solitude

mediterranean diet during pregnancy that links the eating plan to healthier pregnancy outcomes including a reduction of risk for pre-eclampsia and gestational diabetes. abc news medical contributor dr. darien sutton is here to break it down. so great to have you, dr. sutton. tell us about this new study. >> we all know the mediterranean diet for its health benefits. it's endorsed by the american heart association, to decrease risk of cardiovascular disease and in general the diet includes a high intake of plant-based options -- whole grains, olive oil of course and then avoiding high saturated fats and meats and they gathered 8,000 participants in this study and they found women who had diets most similar to the mediterranean diet had an overall 21% decrease risk of complications in pregnancy. as you said that includes outcomes such as pre-eclampsia, gestational diabetes and premature births and stillbirth.

>> obviously we've heard a lot about the mediterranean diet over the years. this is pretty easy for the average mom to follow, right? >> you know, that's a question, is this study general to the general population? that's a good question. when you look at it you're trying to understand what it looks like. unfortunately women of color were underrepresented in this study. that's important to acknowledge because women of color have a disproportionately increased risk of pregnancy complications, but i do think there are ways to combat this. number one, changing studies in the future to make them more diverse and another issue is access and cost and so meeting those costs and trying to stay within budget, there are some things that everyone can do, for example, shopping in season, buying in bulk, products like quinoa, beans and olive oil have great nutritional supplements needed in pregnancy. attending farmers markets and meal prepping. >> anything we can do to increase birthing outcomes in in this country? very important. what should moms-to-be know about changing a diet during pregnancy? >> in general there is no pregnancy diet. as a physician, you just want to make sure they have a wealth of nutritional value in their diet. key substances like vitamin a,

folate and protein are incredibly important and avoiding raw fish. >> good to know for moms at home about what they can do to help themselves have better birthing outcomes. thank you, dr. sutton. mary? now to getting off on the right financial foot in 2023 by breaking barriers. tori dunlap gives tips to her 2.2 million tiktok followers and now she's the author of a new book, "financial feminist." it is great to have you with us on "gma." thanks so much for joining us. >> thank you for having me. >> i love this term, financial feminist. what do you mean by that? >> it's this idea that when you have money you have choices and as a society and a system that disenfranchises so many people when you have money you have options. you get to travel. you get to start a business, donate to causes you believe in. so your entire life opens up to you when you have money. >> our society really does treat women and men differently about money. you know, what are some of those differences that many people may not even be aware of? >> it's the kind of whole thesis of my book but the big thing to keep in mind spending is the perfect example. if you think about frivolous

spending or what we deem frivolous it's lattes, manicures, designer purses, not nfl season tickets. so it's this very gendered distinct version of spending in a way that, you know, we're not expecting men and women to manage money in the same way. >> so how do we counter that? my latte is considered frivolous. my husband's nfl tickets not so much. you say the key to long-term financial success stems from unpacking a lot of these emotions around spending. >> so one of the things i tried to do with the book is i didn't see a lot of finance books out there that talked about the emotions or the psychology of money or sort of narratives you were believing about it like talking about it is taboo or the pursuit of health is bad or wrong and so we spent the whole first chapter talking all about that, talking about the emotions of money and the psychology of money and because i can't teach you how to budget or pay off debt until you understand what sort of hangups you might have. really your financial trauma. >> you said that "b" word. it's a word that scares a lot of

people, budget. you know, how do you get people to recognize that a budget, as you've explained, is actually a free pass to spend money? it's nothing to be scared of. >> i say the word budget and everybody at home is throwing up. the word budget doesn't mean deprivation or restriction. it's like bumpers in bowling, it's like the permission slip you need. we want to make sure that like when we're spending, we can afford it. that we're enjoying our life and it doesn't mean you're just saving all your money or spending all your money. it's finding the balance and we teach that as well in the book. >> breaking down a lot of barriers. so what is one thing you think everyone regardless of economic status can do to make their financial future just a little better? >> the first thing, give yourself some grace. life is hard. things are really hard right now giving yourself -- understanding you weren't taught this. we don't teach people how to manage money. understanding you will be new to this and it might not go so well in the beginning, and

when i started my company, love wellness, gosh, it's been seven years since i started it and i created the company through my own health journey and it's a really common story. a lot of people have chronic health issues that they can't quite pinpoint and it took me over a dozen doctor visits, 18 months, to finally get a blood test that said, oh, you have vitamin deficiencies and those vitamin deficiencies might be caused by a gut health problem and so that experience really ag m te all th lneally rougth proce sy sinessne create innovative clean products that actually help women's bodies and the book is very much the same. >> and as you have been building this brand and you look back, what's been the best learning experience for you or maybe even a failure that when you look back on really helped you grow? >> i think failure is really what makes us to be totally honest and for me when i first

moved to new york, because i've been here for almost 11 years now, i was starting on a different company that failed. i was in the food cooking space and i was working on a show that was maybe going to be on tv and that didn't come to fruition either and so really it's those failures that force you to kind of look inward and take what you have, what's at your resources right then and make something of it. i was going through that health experience at the time and i thought, oh, my goodness, because i have been able to get better wouldn't it be incredible to share this story, this education with everybody that i know, with love wellness. >> you have such amazing advice. we all know this, the holidays can certainly be a stressful time to say the least. what are your top tips for helping just to manage some of that stress this time of year? >> all right, most people are probably watching at home with their families, they've been with their families for a couple of days, and one of the things that i would definitely recommend is taking some time for yourself every day. get that 30-minute walk in, go in your room by yourself for a couple of minutes, i would say that mindful eating is really important. in the book we have a five-week plan that is an elimination diet and it's not for weight loss but to help identify food that can be inflammatory for you and so mindful eating is really
