four inches. even kentfield at inches. in san francisco, we had 1.9 inches but we were not near any records. our record was over three inches set in 1945. we will be dealing with cloud cover and a little bit of a break from the rain through tomorrow with some sunshine and then this next system moves in late tomorrow night into thursday and it is a storm level one. we will get about half an inch to an inch of rain and i will let you know what to expect in the accuweather 7 day forecast. dan: in the east bay, the storm caused some serious damage, but it could have been worse. in san ramon, the weather is blamed for a roof collapse. >> i want to start by letting everybody know there are no

reports of any injuries. that is the good news. you can see yellow caution tape and read danger tape blocking the front of this big five sporting store. the main beam in the center of the storm broke and water flooded a major portion of the store. the hole in the roof of this big five store shows the impact of tuesday morning's rain. >> thank goodness no one was there because we haven't been there five or six months but that check stans are right there. if people had been there during business hours, this would have had about outcome. >> when the fire department arrived on scene, a big part of the roof had collapsed. it likely also caused water damage to the next door right aid store where crews were working to pump out the water. san ramon fire department chief says with the large amount of rain and a flat roof, drainage may have been an issue.

>> with a flat roof, the impact would be the weight of the water , so drainage is important. >> when rain would come down, you would definitely notice through the drains. >> for the past six whenever it would rain, he says he would see huge amounts of water coming from the roof. >> it's very interesting that it finally collapsed. i remember we would walk by and see buckets of water coming out of the drain and i never to myself it would actually collapse. >> he says they have a small leak in their roof which he will prioritize to get fixed after seeing the roof collapse at big five. >> hopefully we can take care of it as soon as possible. >> the building has been red tagged by the city. they are working to assess the structural damage. the battalion chief admits the

building is old but a roof collapsing is still pre-rare. -- pretty rare. >> you don't see it too often. i've been here 20 years and this is the first collapse i have seen. >> i spoke to the plaza manager and she says the right aid and big five are managed by different organization. five did not return a request for comment. the city did verify there is no more water on the roof. dion: came overnight and left the north waterlogged. check out the downpours early this morning in santa rosa. stephanie sierra joins us live with a look at the storm's impact, including some treacherous road flooding. good to see you are actually dry. >> we are certainly, but it has been a tough day for commuters tracking

up the north bay as they dealt with flooding that left several cars stranded in sonoma county. thankfully no widespread damage to report. for the most part, people welcome to the wet weather. we certainly need it and are bracing for the next storm. the atmospheric river that swept the bay area overnight brought federer wetter, ferment -- and torrential rain making for a nasty commute across the north bay. case in point, these cars abandoned by their drivers, stuck in the middle-of-the-road as flooding lank at highway in sonoma county. it appeared a levy broke around 121, closing roads and leaving cars stranded. moving north, and other creek spilled over west of windsor. all in all, the level 3 three storm didn't bring widespread damage officials anticipated. >> from our standpoint, this was a beneficial storm.

we have the potential for mudslide and we've seen some of the effects of larger storms, but with the storm specifically, we did not see any movement other than localized flooding and ponding across the city. >> it is scary. make sure you have both your hands on the wheel because if you are not careful, it could get you out of the moment and it could be disastrous. >> slow speeds, gloomy skies and a muddy commute. >> i did have to be a little bit careful with the water on the road. it seemed a little dangerous and i had to drive a little slower. >> careful and hopeful the next batch of storms looming into the new year will bring much needed moisture and not a widespread wipeout. >> we have the potential for more flooding and concerns. the timing is a number of day

after but it is something we are going to pay attention to to see if the models start trending stronger or back off and become weaker. >> i'm supposed to leave for oregon on friday and i'm getting nervous. i'm not flying southwest, thank goodness. >> for those of you who are flying southwest, we certainly feel for you. for those of you home and safe, the fire marshal does advise to take advantage of these breaks between storms to clean your property and clear out the drains and cleanup leaf litter to help maintain the storm drain system. that will help prevent any future damage. dion: reminder. now a reminder to be careful when you are driving and here is why -- rocks crashing down on highway 116 just south of kernville, just one area where the rain because rock slides.

keep in mind as the ground gets more saturated, the possibly of rock slides increases even after it stops raining. dan: in san francisco, the stormy weather hit some areas harder than others. the gusty winds and pounding rain cleared out before noon. we took a closer look at the impact of this storm. at sfo, the weather is continuing to create real travel headaches. >> here at sfo, we saw more than 70 flights canceled and more than 200 delays. airport authorities tell us things have dramatically improved. as christmas travel wraps up for some, a major storm passed through our area. at ocean beach, the rate -- the waves looked fierce and a high surf advisory, no surfers were found on the water today and there were no cars on this stretch of the great highway. the southbound lane was closed for a while because of flooding. >> she hates it. >> in the inner sunset, morgan

francisco with late about an hour and 45 minutes. there were probably a hundred people who did not make their connections. >> he rebooked in the nick of time. >> i rebooked and would try to get a refund. they told me the next flight on jan -- on united was january 2. >> after the record number of cancellations stemming from a so-called storm of a generation, this couple is glad to have escaped at all. frances: we are lucky -- >> we are lucky and blessed. we missed all the subzero weather on the east coast and had beautiful weather in sonoma. >> with more airport staff, things are looking better now at sfo than the past four days. >> it was terrible. we were watching on tv and are grateful it was not our experience. thanks to everyone for getting us flying again. >> despite the delays and cancellations, the sfo duty manager says overall, things are

running smoothly and there have not been any major backups or lines in the past couple of days. dan: you can get the latest forecast and whether nate's any time on the abc seven streaming app. it's available for roku, apple tv, fire tv and google tv devices. dion: two developing news o service meltdown at southwest airlines. southwest warned it would continue cap desk canceling flights until he gets operations back on track. how is this impacting local airports? we go now to the oakland airport. hit pretty hard from last two days of cancellations and delays. our operations there today? >> in just a couple of words, not great. if we are looking at the big picture nationally, 90% of all flights canceled today are southwest flights. about 2500 here at oakland. we are talking 100

cancellations. at this is the big mess -- a sea of bags. if you could peek behind the people trying to see if their baguettes here, some big, some small, all waiting to be reunited with their owners. of the folks we have come across, some people have been waiting for days to get their luggage and others are trying to get on the next flight out of the bay area after having been stranded here for days. we've seen at least one man landed in the bay area on christmas day and hadn't seen his bag since but today he got lucky. >> quick and easy. >> did you think it was going to be quick and easy? >> i thought i was going to be here for hours. >> there's no guarantee. any minute, anything can happen to anyone else. just a service collapse, one word. >> earlier airlines released a statement

saying with consecutive days of extreme weather behind us, continuing challenges are impacting our customers and employees in a significant way. that is unacceptable. the statement went on to say the airline had continued to operate on a reduced schedule for the next several days. we continue to see the ripple effect here at oakland international airport. taking a live look at the folks peaking and hoping their bags are among the dozens here. southwest is offering all passengers traveling through january 2 the ability to rebook or travel standby without additional fees. the airline allowing liars who had a flight canceled or significantly delayed -- allowing flyers who had a flight canceled or significantly delayed, if you had to book with another airline or rent-a-car to try to get to where you need to go. we will be back with another update coming up at 5:00.

i'm julian glover, abc 7 news. dan: gridlock is causing headaches at san jose international airport as well. more than 150 flights into and out of the airport today have been canceled. another 48 delayed. 48% of southwest flights to san jose are among those cancellations. the trouble for southwest continues. the cancellations have been especially challenging for elderly passengers and those with limited mobility. melanie woodrow has that part of the story. >> i've never had an experience like this before. >> her expression says it all -- the 78-year-old was stranded at oakland international airport after two cancellations. her daughter and a family friend drove from portland to get her, arriving at oakland at 2 a.m. >> she could have got sick, she

could have had a diabetic episode, there was zero accountability. >> a southwest airlines spokesperson blamed the weather. but the president of southwest airline pilots association said this -- >> our processes, our i.t. come our infrastructure just was not there. >> tracy hurst is commending individual employees who said stayed with her mother until she got a shuttle to take her to the hotel room. >> what makes this unique is my mom is an elderly woman and she was not prioritize. luckily she had food were trying to help her out at home. but what if she didn't have that? what if i did not have the means to put her in a hotel? >> it would not have been so bad if i wasn't handicapped, but i felt stranded and alone.

it was not a good experience. >> a southwest employee asked if she needed help. >> she literally the hallway until she got me curbside. >> her daughter picture up and later went back for the bags. >> there were hundreds of suitcases. hundreds. >> for all the bags in plain sight, it seems just as many are missing. her medication is in one of the bags, possibly on its way to the bay area. >> my daughter takes medication on a daily basis and since we are not in el salvador where her doctor is, it is tricky getting a replacement medication. so scrambling to get her the medication she needs and worrying about that is stressful. >> a travel nightmare some says has been worse for vulnerable passengers. the u.s. department of transportation is now looking into it. dion: you really feel the

dion: to breaking news as if there weren't enough things happening at bay area airports, we have news coming out of sfo where police are investigating a head-on crash. we are still getting details but it appears a black kia sedan was driving on the wrong side of the road and crashed head-on into another vehicle. south san francisco police are investigating. we haven't been able to confirm if anyone is injured or what led the driver to go against traffic. it's a story we will continue to follow. dan: in place at a san francisco bakery are in shock after their bakery was targeted by thieves for a sixth time. they broke the glass in the castro district and took off with the restaurant ipads -- gifts even to the employees by customers and this time, they made off with something more valuable. >> they trashed the place, and if that wasn't enough, they went upstairs, we had a safe and they took that one as well. dan: employees said that thieves

may be the same ones who broken last month, mostly because they had the tools needed to pry the safe from where it was bolted. dion: dart watch her input on a plan for three stations. they want to transform some parking lots into housing. those lots at the el cerrito plaza, berkeley and ashley stations would have about 2500 housing units. it would be built over the next several years. all the parking spots would be gone for good but bart plans to build a multilevel parking garage. bart says the plan would make it easier for people to avoid driving and reduce pollution and traffic congestion. go to bart.gov to give your input. dan: we have a nice break from pretty intense rain but more rain is coming? dion: probably need to take advantage while we can. let's talk about the timeline. frances: we have three more

storms headed our way in the next week. live doppler 7, notice this level three storm is on its way out. we could see a spotty shower overnight but for the most part, we have a exploratorium with temperatures in the mid-50's. san jose a little warmer at 57 degrees. i'm showing you the walnut creek camera because we see a little blue through the clouds. a nice relief and break insight. concord, 57, livermore, 59 degrees. our flood advisory has expired, the wind advisory has expired. the only thing we need to look out for is a high surf advisory where we could see up to 25 foot waves. they are already 23 careful if you are headed to the beaches.

we could see dangerous conditions, beach erosion and things of that nature. a winter storm warning in effect in the sierra until 4 a.m. tomorrow. tomorrow will be a great day to travel to and from tahoe if you are trying to time in between the storms but we are expecting an additional six to 20 inches of snow and gusts of 250 miles an hour through tomorrow morning. tonight is going to be chilly with clear conditions in the north bay. for the most part, low 40's around the bay area and it is fairly uniform. mid-50's for tomorrow. the storm impact scale is one out of five. late tomorrow night through thursday, less than half an inch for most areas. i will show you the timing of how that plays out. wednesday night is when it starts to hit our coastline. it moves through scattered

hotline is likely to be an hours long wait as well. southwest have a number of international offices. they have aruba, bahamas -- you can call any of these international offices and you might be able to get through to an agent much quicker than you with through the main u.s. hotline. either call international offices or see if you can rebook yourself through the mobile app is your fastest way to try to get onto a new flight. dan: that is a pro tip -- try the international numbers. you mentioned the app. that can be fairly effective at times. what about going up to the counter and doing it at the airport? >> you can try. certainly if you are one of the first ones, it is real first-come, first-served basis at the airport. the issue is southwest does not have many empty seats at this point and they are canceling two thirds of flights going forward for the next few days, so the

options are really limited. what your best bet is, rather than trying to get onto a new southwest flight if you are hoping to travel in the next few days, you need to make a backup plan and get on another airline or another form of transportation. i know a lot of folks are getting cars or grabbing train tickets or decide if the trip is even worth it at this point. under federal law, if your flight it's canceled and you no longer wish to travel, you can get a full cash refund guaranteed coming of penalties, no fees. -- guaranteed, no penalties, no fees. dan: you just have to know when to quit, i suppose. talk about ways to give yourself a little more time or buying canceled flight insurance. dion: those are -- >> reasonable approaches. a lot of folks are booking back up flights around the busy

holiday season. maybe they are booking a busy flight on american. especially if it is a flight that is in maine, economy or higher. with those tickets, you can cancel and retain the full amount of travel credit. if you book a $300 american flight and decide not to take it because your southwest flight flu, you can retain $300 of american travel credit to use in the future. that way at least you have a backup plan if your southwest flight gets canceled. at the main thing is to remember you are hopefully going to be protected from having to pay out-of-pocket for meals, hotels, even alternate transportation. southwest is saying on their website that they will honor reasonable requests for reimbursement for folks who are stranded starting christmas eve and through january 2. so keep those receipts if you have to pay out-of-pocket.

hopefully the airline will end up making folks whole. dan: great information. the founder of scott's cheap flights. thanks so much. dion: we are hearing survival from the buffalo area after it was socked by severe winter storms. nearly 30 people died in western new york from heavy snowfall. some were found dead in their cars. that's what one family feared may happen to them. they lost power in their house, so they drove to a hotel, but the storm was too much and they got stranded in their car, fearful for the worst. >> it was very intense. we tried to keep it together for as long as possible because we didn't want to frighten the kids, but i've never seen anything like it. dion: the good news is the family was rescued by firefighters. they spent christmas weekend at

a warm fire house. dan: it was certainly raining hard in the bay area but you should see what it looked like in the sierra. look how fierce the wind was blowing at the top of palisades tahoe. authorities issued a backcountry avalanche warning for the area from highway 49 to highway four. as a precaution, they close their gondola and sky chair for the day. on interstate 80 and highway 50. chains are required in both directions on 80 and on 50, four vehicles that do not have four-wheel-drive, remember to check for chain restrictions before heading into that area. dion: much more to come, including cheating in school that's getting more the high-tec

then airline spokesperson says bad weather is to blame but both pilots and flight attendants union say the issue is outdated scheduling software. chris joins us. i know you have some travel coming up, does this make you leery to go to the airport? chris: yes. i think the biggest thing is i'm supposed to baby travel on thursday. but if you have a carry-on in case you get stuck somewhere you don't want to be for a couple of days. fingers crossed but a lot of frustration. i hate seeing all those bags just sitting there and it's a real mess for sure. dan: the weather certain played a factor but in 90% of those flights were southwest, that's more than just weather. dion: they have alternate modes of

transportation. aren't you glad not to be traveling during this time? frances: i'm really glad to not be traveling. i used to be an engineer for united airlines. most people don't know that but if i was stuck there, i would do it chris recommended, travel with a carry-on in case you are stuck for a few days and need some extra close. i would not wait in those lines because they just get so long. i would do everything online because you will be on hold for hours and then you will be waiting for days and it's not worth it. dan: a new york congressman elect admits he made up major details of his resume and personal background. republican george santos says he embellished his resume and is sorry about it. the new york times investigations found he lied about everything from his education to his work on wall street to his family background. he told voters his grandparents survived the holocaust. now he says he is jewish like but clearly catholic.

he pushed back on those calling on him to resign. >> i'm not resigning. if i have to leave congress, it's going to be by the voters in november, 2024. dan: so he is defiant. he scheduled to be sworn in. congress could investigate him for violating campaign finance laws. it occurs to me many voters who voted for him did so because there was something in his personal story that resonated. and it's not true. chris: it's obviously the wrong way to go about it and you just wonder -- he says right now he is defiant about not leaving but the heat is going to come on. we will wait and see how it plays out but it is sad he did that. it's just not true. dan: so unnecessary. dion: you have to think about this -- if he has lied thus far,

could you imagine if he was in office? the possibilities could get slippery and tricky. dan: just so many strange details to lie about unnecessarily. it says something about his makeup. frances: i do not want a pathological liar leading any part of our community and that's what it sounds like he is. dion: artificial intelligence is creating some challenges we may not have been prepared for. a south carolina professor is warning students can easily cheat using a new chat bot. he says chat gpt seconds on a wide variety of subject with information that looks like it was written by an actual person. that is scary. the results cannot be traced back online but experts say it's not easy to prove when a student uses a chat bot. i'm surprised there's not already a way to cheat going on all those zoom interviews for those meetings and -- you look

like you were invested in this. chris: one it we are going with two cheating stories and if i -- i have such terrible handwriting if i wanted to cheat, they would know it's not chris's handwriting, so i would be out of luck. dan: if you could just read it. chris: i should have been a doctor. frances: i'm against lying, but part of me is like where was this when i was a student? i would evidently be tempted to use it. it's going to be challenging because there's so much technology available. i think it is tough. a lot of the tests, they don't allow them to bring their phones and they are even doing paper and pencils on some of my daughters tests. dan: and where's the satisfaction doing well on a test you cheated on? chris: are there still

scantron's? is that still a thing? frances: yes. but most of it is all online. dan: speaking of technology, your next meal out may be served by a robot. many restaurants are testing out using robots. mcdonald's is experimenting with its first-ever robot restaurant in fort worth, texas and white castle is trying out a robot programmed to flip burgers or make chicken wings. it only a matter of time before they get one of these things to anchor the news. [laughter] as a kid, i worked in those places and you work in restaurants for years and it was great. it was formative. it's a shame you can get young people to do those jobs. they are just not interested. i don't know how i feel feel about having the robot do the work for you. chris: they can't put on a suit

to be the oldest troop when of the mississippi river and the second oldest in the nation as a whole. stephen has been part of the troop for years, first as a scout and now a scoutmaster. >> you see them when they are 11 years old and when they graduate when they are 18 and just to see the remarkable change. >> today's troop is open to everyone, but when it was founded, all the members were ethnically chinese out of necessity. >> because of the chinese exclusion act, history shows us we were not welcome here. >> over the years, the troop has dwindled in size and is down to about 13 members. he says he believes cost as well as the neighborhood being home to hard-working immigrant families plays a role. >> i see that and we are a lot different than a lot of other troops. a lot more parents involved in the program. >> despite their pro
