it is dry and a much better morning. this time yesterday. no travel troubles but a little bit of fog. nevada, half a mile visibility. two miles in livermore. and that is it. a lovely view outside. a live look showing you the holiday lights. mainly clear skies. but through the day we are totally dry. it is later tonight that scattered showers exit the for class -- forecast around 9:00 p.m. this is a level one light storm so no one near as strong so nowhere near as strong as yesterday's strong. we will show you the storm in eight minutes. kumasi: developing news on the travel mass. all of america's age are -- major -- major imports -- airports and the bay area is feeling the impact. san jose has 150 cancellation so far. oakland has 120 four and sfo is

seeing 41. a majority of those are with southwest airlines. this animation shows how southwest operates compared to most other airlines. southwest uses a point-to-point system versus a hub and spoke system and it makes them more susceptible to widespread issues when a domino effect catches on. lena howland is live international airport with how this is affecting travelers. lena: hello. it is an understatement to say that the bay area has been experiencing delays and cancellations all week long at airports. in fact in san jose as you mentioned there are 150 cancellation so far, which is about re-times as many as sfo as of last check. here is a look at what things look like. this is yesterday. a pileup of hundreds of

suitcases. the airline canceled more than half of their flights this morning making up for 2500 flights following thousands more earlier. many folks are not able to get out for several days. southwest blames the holiday storm for its service cuts and rocky recovery prompting the ceo to apologize on twitter and a federal probe by the department of transportation. bob jordan apologized saying that the airline point-to-point operating system which relies on a network of direct flights is especially vulnerable to challenges like severe weather making for a slower rebound. >> with our large fleet of airplanes and flight crews out of position in dozens of locations and after days of trying to operate as much as our full schedule, we reached a decision point to significantly reduce flying to catch up.

we are focused on safely getting all of the pieces back into position to end this rolling struggle. lena: these problems are far from over. as you heard from the ceo he says that southwest was -- will significantly reduce flights in the hopes of being back on track before next week. many travelers have been hearing from says that the lights they are being rebooked on are happening in january, a few days from now which is why many travelers are opting to get a rental car and make a long drive home instead. live in san jose, lena howland. jobina: we are hoping for the best and it is not just getting their location which is the goal, making sure the bags arrive as well. michael laid out the rights you have an it comes to misplaced luggage. michael: if your luggage is straight up lost you are owed as much as $3800 for a domestic

thought that this was just crazy. j.r.: andrea flores of santa rosa is talking about the wind she felt monday night in the sierra. wind that was throwing the snow every which way at the palisades tahoe ski resort overnight into tuesday. they have impacted all of the resorts including boreal. >> we did not open the lifts all the way to the top of the ridgeline but we had options lower. there are still ones that take you to the terrain park features as well as tubing available. j.r.: as for the conditions tuesday afternoon and evening, flores says that she saw and felt a little bit of everything. >> it was a mix of rain and snow. it was very hard to see. so we had to get whatever to get out of there, honestly. j.r.: get outdated. as they headed back to the bay

area, they stopped to buy chains so they would not be ticketed by the california highway patrol. even with these conditions it did not matter -- matter to diana visiting from the philippines. >> it was amazing. it was a first time i have seen that much now. jobina: as drew has been telling us the next storm arrives tonight and you can track the rain with the bay area streaming app. we have the latest forecast and more and it is available for roku, apple tv, google tv devices. kumasi: the man accused of being the stockton serial killer is facing four more murder charges. two of the murders happened in alameda county and the other two in san joaquin county where there is an attempted murder charge. wesley brownlee was arrested for three murders including one in oakland. he is expected to be back in court on tuesday. a man has been detained after starting a fire at eight -- at an apartment complex. it happened before 9:00 on contra costa boulevard. police tell us that when they arrived a man with multiple knives in away from the building and he eventually used one of the knives to hurt himself.

officers deployed on we beanbags and detained the man who was taken to the hospital. the unit where the fire started was empty residents in three other units had to be evacuated. jobina: san francisco residents and businesses can get free sandbags and if you get up to 10 -- and you can get up to 10 of them. they are available from 8:00 p.m. through 2:00 p.m.. you need to bring proof of address and to load them into your own car so just a heads up, they can be heavy. officials urge you to call 311 if you see flooding or downed trees in your area. drew: we will likely see minor flooding in the days ahead. today is dry but tonight begins a parade of storms that will last new year's eve. it is a lovely picture with clear skies and good air quality o the recent rain so we

recent history. thousands of flights have been canceled, most of them southwest. the head of the airline pledging to make things right. in the bay area there are more than 300 flights canceled. lena howland is live at san jose international that is the most affected right now. what are you seeing? lena: this a san jose is experiencing the most cancellations out of all bay area airports. as of last check only a few minutes ago they already have 150 canceled flight so far and 11 delays. southwest is accounting for most of those issues. they have canceled half of their flights nationwide which is more than 2500 flights. the ceo issuing a video apology on twitter saying that they are promising to get things back on

track for next week. we drop -- we talked to one traveler was supposed to be back home three days ago on christmas night but got stranded in san jose. he was finally rebooked for a flight on the first of january, something he is not planning on waiting around for when he could drive home faster. >> i think i will rent a car and drive home and be home in 10 hours. >> until we recover from the service, but clearly we need to double down on our already existing plans to upgrade systems for these circumstances so that we never again face what is happening right now. lena: that was the southwest that you just heard from. he says they will significant reduce flights over the next coming days in the hopes of being back on track before next week. these problems are far from over. as far as the other bay area

airports as of last check, oakland is always -- is already experiencing major issues with 124 canceled flights. sfo has 41. live in san jose, lena howland. kumasi: a meltdown, that is what pete buttigieg is calling the problem this morning. his department has launched an investigation into what went wrong and secretary buttigieg is promising that south wedge -- southwest will be held accountable. >> we are pasa point where they could say -- past the point where we could say this is a weather driven issue. all of this began with the severe storm we saw with winter weather affecting the country and severely disrupting all airlines and our entire system. as of today the rest of the aviation system is down to a rate of 4% flights canceled. we are north of 60% when it
