>> dan, the cancellations. there have been 154 cancellations at the airport. the majority of those cancellations have been southwest. the majority of the other carriers are back to normal. you can see all the unplayed -- claimed bags. because of the cancellation things are a lot more quiet. one of the busiest spots of the airport was the rental car center, a place for many passengers and travelers were going as a last resort. >> greg mcmurray and his family are caught up in the chaos caused by southwest delays and cancellations. his daughter, visiting from l.a. for christmas was supposed to lay out tuesday. >> at the last minute, they called a since of the flight was canceled. we have been scrambling around trying to figure out how we need to get her home. bus stations, train

there all busy. >> when we spoke with them they had been in line for an hour. our camera showing you how much longer they had to go before getting to the counter. mcmurray story is far from unique. >> there's no buses, trains, rental cars. >> the challenge of getting the rental car is only half the battle. >> you are getting a car to drive to lacey can fly back to d.c.? >> while ticket lines are getting shorter at the airport, delays and cancellations are still happening. notifications are coming through the most common channels. something travelers and the spokesperson told us. >> i got in email that said the flight was canceled. it looks like i will be able to fly out tomorrow. but i'm not. definitely check a couple of sources. don't just rely on texan emails. >> for some, the headache has lasted for days.

we caught up with john williams tuesday night. he was supposed to be home in oregon, christmas night and had been sleeping in the airport for two days. wednesday afternoon, he was still there. now, things are finally shaping up for him. >> southwest put me in a hotel last night. which was refreshing because i've been sleeping on the floor for two days. he needs to make a 10 hour drive home. he has found some way positive. >> an update on santa's helper. we heard he was still in the garage, waiting for his rental car. we interviewed him before noon. an hours long wait for him. 70 other people. you heard officials say that if you're flying southwest or a loved one is, you want to double and triple check the status of your flight through multiple sources. those cancellations are expected to last through tomorrow. right now, zach fuentes.

>> thanks so much per it such a mess. all three of the bay area has big airports are dealing with the fallout from southwest mass cancellation. the luggage continues to stack up at sfo. take a look. the airport has had 54 flight cancellations in the past when he four hours according to the website, flight wear. southwest has now canceled more than 1000 flight since christmas in san francisco, oakland, and san jose. about 13,000 last two days around the country. they plan a reduced schedule for the next few days. the airport has had more than hundred 30 cancellations in the past when he four hours. the bulk of those cancellations are once again, southwest flights. >> southwest airline ground worker say the airline made unreasonable demands on them during the meltdown. the president of their union spoke with members of congress. melanie woodrow has the story. >> at -- as southwest air

suspect's car against the center divider on i 80 and highway 37 this morning. chp says the chase darted in elk grove where police tried to stop the car because it had been reported stolen. that led to a chase that reach speeds up to hundred miles an hour. in valeo, the chp use trips to slow the car down. the driver in three passengers were pulled out of the vehicle, taken into custody. at least one police vehicle was damaged in the chase and had to be towed off the highway. a big rig crash on interstate 80 caused a huge mess in san pablo. the accident pablo road. there was a big backup on the highway. there have been no injuries reported. >> the maddie keys of attacking nancy pelosi's has been pleaded not guilty to charges today. he faced a second arraignment today on state charges which include burglary, elder abuse,

>> pg&e has reportedly made its first payment in a settlement over the 2019 fire in sonoma county. the first payment was 1.2 million dollars. under the agreement, reached in april, pg&e will make five payments to local organizations that support survivors of the fire. utilities the da dropped 22 misdemeanor

yesterday afternoon. consumer advocates are happy to see this. they do not consider it any kind of favor. the weather delays and cancellations airlines need only offer refunds. if the delays are caused by the airlines, reimbursement is required. southwest interests. we will honor reasonable request for reimbursement for meals, hotel, and alternate transportation to get the reimbursement's, send in email and directed to this webpage. there is nothing here that says reimbursement. you will see it in a couple moments. i reached out to southwest, asking which of the three boxes should be used. i heard back. my question was not addressed. i want you to pick one of the three boxes. you will see and a couple moments here hopefully.

need to show a negative covid result before filleting to the u.s.. 2 -- before i alone. great to be with you. explain with the u.s. will require from travelers entering from china, going forward. >> starting on january 5, at oh 1 a.m., any passengers originating on a flight from the people's republic of china to the united states, even if you're going to another country is going to iron proof of a negative covid test, no more than two days prior to getting on the plane. it could be pcr or an antigen test. they are required to take it with a health professional watching you. the airlines will be in charge of verifying.

the lack of transparency. is it just a medical decision? is there some political aspects to this? >> dan, it's hard to say there will be data driven policy without the data. that is what one of the big hurdles is. the cdc does not have clear information about what the covid-19 burden looks like in china. also, with the variance are that are dominating right now. they haven't been given that data in an efficient manner. we can open up fights about concern. there is a reason why we don't have this requirement for other countries. this is just a safety caution to curb spread, even if it's a small percentage. but also top sure what the variance are in china to make sure there's nothing new. >> what's your understanding about the covid situation right now in china? what do you hear? >> the understanding is that it is dire. these reports coming directly

it is trying to use some of those lessons to layout a roadmap for future improvement. >> if you are trying to describe the millions of vehicles that roll along bay area roads, the phrase environmental success story probably would not pop into your head. researchers at uc berkeley say our success in cutting dangerous submissions over the past 50 years has been nothing short of dramatic. >> each measure pollution we looked at has decreased more than 99%. >> associate professors to understand which policies had the biggest impact on pollution and how to expand on that success in the upcoming decades. they compared factors ranging from victor gasoline standards, to improvements in automobile technology. they say the real gains came from the clean air act of 1972. >> those standard say it is illegal to sell a new car the

stolen vehicle. they try to stop a stolen vehicle that the minor was driving. they say he purposely hit a police car and drove off. he was later arrested, after trying to run away. a man in pleasant hill is accused of starting a fire at an apartment complex and stabbing himself. it happened last night. police tell us when they arrive, a man with multiple knives was seen running from the building. he eventually used one of the knives to hurt himself. officers used the bag rounds and detain him. he was taken to the hospital. the unit the fire started was empty. residents and three other units had to be evacuated. no one else was hurt. >> the part of open said his saw a decline in all you must i. total loaded container volume climbed 50% compared to last november. the director says the decrease was not unexpected and says despite a gain in october,

four. new numbers provide insight into how empty downtown san francisco is. cbre has found it back and see rate of 27% in downtown. that's up 8%, from last year and a whopping 20%, from 2019, before the pandemic. analysts say the trend will continue into next year but they think there could the a rebound by the end of 2023. the question is, why is san francisco so slow to recover from the pandemic? we have been covering these stories. what do you think? do you think we could recover by the end of 2023? that's actually pretty soon. >> you hope so. a lot of tech. a lot of workers, working from home. we saw what happened with twitter. that didn't go so well. it's not a great time to buy a home in the bay area.
