download the app and make sure you enable push notifications. developing news. for the first time, we are seeing signs of improvement. southwest has canceled more than 2300 flights today. it is 58% of its flights. that is down by 2500 yesterday, 2700 tuesday. lena howland is live in san jose, seeing the most impact out of the airports in the bay area. >> that is right. this airport is the most impacted airport in the bay area again. as you can tell from these hundreds of unclaimed bags sitting in baggage claim. they have been here for several days. this airport has 145 canceled flights this morning. that is only two fewer than yesterday.

nationwide, more than 2500 southwest flights are canceled today, marking the fourth straight day the airline has canceled more than 50% of scheduled flights, putting out a new video statement last night offering three things, an apology, a pledge to repair relationships with customers, andfastest -- possible. you can submit a refund request for canceled flights. if you have expenses because of this, you can submit those receipts on their website, southwest.com. >> we have extended flexi for self-service travel changes through january 2. if you have travel plans with us before then, you should not need to get on a call or stand in line. >> i hate southwest. i hate them. my feet are swollen. >> that was a passenger founded

long shifts and extreme working conditions. randy barnes is the president of the union that represents ground workers at southwest, the people who work outdoors. he says his members were battling subzero temperatures, driving winds and ice storms. many have been working 16 or 18 hour shifts. >> clear performing one of the most dangerous jobs out of any rate -- we are performing one of the most dangerous jobs out of any industry. >> barnes says he pushed southwest to cycle employees in and out of the cold and those requests were honored though not soon enough, he says. he says with better planning, the meltdown could have been avoided. >> more airline trouble. a family visiting the bay area says delta offered them $24,000 in vouchers to give up their seats and then took them back

after the agreement was made. david reeve says he agreed to give up his, his wife and his daughter's seat because delta offered them $8,000 for each seat, but the offer did not hold up. the copilot did not show up, so delta ended up canceling the flight and the vouchers. >> you are not honoring the vouchers you agreed to pay and now you are canceling the flight. i thought it was bad business. >> delta offered to rebook reeves and paid for his hotel and rental car, but did not pay for his next flight. airlines are required to compensate passengers before they bump them from the flight, though the conditions of the compensation are not regulated. we have not heard back from delta. >> developing news in colorado, where people were forced to sleep in their cars after a snowstorm. snow was coming down at two inches per hour.

the snow lead to accidents that ended up closing interstate 70 near denver. cars were backed up for miles, people trapped on the road for 10 hours. at least four other highways in colorado were also closed. the state patrol they patrol saying people should delay their plans. >> for shortage of ambulances a shortage of ambulances. there is not always an ambulance available. officials in contra costa county say they have 30 ambulances that respond to calls and some times they are used for things that are not an emergency. >> ambulance services have been impacted by the pandemic, the recent events, but also they large use of the ambulance service for normal calls.

drive 27 hours back to houston instead. this also canceled their second vacation, which they should have been flying out for last night. >> i started to see southwest was still canceling 2500 flights a day, and i was like, i don't trust them to get us there by saturday. >> make sure those passengers get to where they need to go and they are provided adequate compensation. >> that was transportation secretary pete buttigieg as the federal investigation into the airline is gaining momentum. if you are still missing luggage, you can get information on how to receive those bags, meaning they will ship to any address for free. as for other bay area airports, oakland is still experiencing major issues. at last check, they have 117 canceled flights today.
