>> got a little too comfortable. had to come in. decided to be with you. >> five days off, you're fresh. it is a busy, busy morning because overnight a life-threatening snowstorm hits the denver area grinding a major interstate to a halt. >> yeah, and the snow slicked roads have caused multiple accidents making it even more difficult for crews to clear the congestion. reports of people stuck in their vehicles for hours, some overnight. mola lenghi is on the scene in denver for us. mola, good morning. >> reporter: well, good morning, whit. that storm system that has been crisscrossing the country pounding denver overnight, blanketing the entire metro area. as you can see here, causing some pretty significant damage. toppling trees and branches and limbs in its path. this one down here in the middle of a roadway causing some backup here. this roadway as you can see blanketing the cars.

it's a heavier, wetter, slushier, again, heavier sort of snow and as a result, it's really weighing down a lot of the things that it's sitting on. here is this tree branch that couldn't bear the weight of the snow and split, severed off the tree, came crashing down into this business. you know, shattering the windows there. up to ten inches of snow falling overnight. at its peak at a rate of two inches every hour and that heavy, wet snow crippling travel. roadways throughout the denver area, cars stalling out, spinning out. interstate 70 brought to a complete stand still. we're seeing cars and semi trucks stranded across a five-mile stretch of highway, some for as many as ten hours. people reportedly sleeping in their cars overnight. denver's airport hit hard. tarmacs turning into parking lots. the snow not done yet, even more expected in the eastern part of the state this morning as that dangerous storm keeps marching east. millions in the heartland

bracing for a blast of snow and ice and more continuing to move east. heavy downpours expected on the east coast this morning and this weekend which could signal wet conditions for the holiday weekend. whit? >> more parts of the country cleaning up and digging out. mola, thank you. janai? to that point now to the massive storm that left nearly 40 people dead in western new york and that number still expected to rise as the area digs out and now warm weather is on the way. mona kosar abdi is back on the scene in buffalo for us. good morning, mona. those higher temperatures bring on their own risks. >> reporter: that's right, janai. the area still not in the clear just yet. nearly a week after buffalo's deadliest storm in history, we're seeing signs of returning to normal. overnight the driving ban has come to an end. the mayor saying the streets are

finally passable. area highways including portions of i-190 have re-opened and the city's airport which has been closed since friday is back up and running. meanwhile, the national guard has conducted over 800 welfare checks. the death toll now at 38. however, blame for the city's potential lack of preparedness has now turned into a public fight between the mayor and county officials. but another sign that the area is turning a corner, a warm-up is under way. temperatures are expected to hit the 50s. officials are preparing for any potential flooding that may happen after the rapid melt. after the weekend's bitter cold temperatures, this is feeling like summer. janai? >> i'm sure those warm temperatures are welcome but, again, the concerns about flooding, mona, thank you for that. gio? the storms across the nation are just mart of what created the southwest airlines fiasco, for thousands of exhausted travelers. still trying to get home with

another day of mass cancellations and alex perez is at chicago's midway airport with the details. alex, good morning to you. >> reporter: hey, good morning, gio. southwest says they have been working around the clock to get things back on track. christmas was on sunday, and there are still a lot of people struggling to get back home. this morning, more scrutiny for southwest airlines from infuriated passengers. the airline already canceling more than 2,300 flights today as unclaimed baggage remains piled up at airports across the country. >> it's just been chaos. >> reporter: over the last week, the airline canceling more than 13,000 flights in the wake of that massive storm. the airline's outdated i.t. infrastructure coupled with its point-to-point flight system, which makes it more vulnerable than its competitors that route flights through big city hubs all leading to the travel nightmare. ceo bob jordan begging for patience as the company cancels flights to reset and reposition planes, flying some aircraft

with baggage but no passengers. this morning the airline's chief commercial officer offering his apologies to from california to new york frustrated passengers like paul shelby unable to rebook or even find their luggage. >> didn't give us our luggage so these clothes have been on us for four days. >> reporter: others giving up on flights altogether. these three rented a car instead to drive 23 hours from baltimore to austin, texas. >> our only option was a flight going into dallas on friday. >> reporter: southwest now facing a federal investigation for the debacle directing passengers to their website to request refunds and reimbursements. the airline which has proven profitable in the past now taking hits as its stock plummets. and united and american say they have placed price caps on last-minute fares in certain markets to help people get back home.

gio? >> it's just incredible to think that we are nearly a week into this, alex, and now we're talking about 96% of the canceled flights today are southwest flights, just incredible. alex, thank you for that report. whit? now to that breaking news, a massn miilat in une. ukrainian forces intercepting dozens of them. britt clennett is on the scene in kyiv. britt, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, whit. well, i'm in a district on the left bank of kyiv where a house has been completely destroyed after a missile was shot down overhead. the falling debris causing a massive fire here and you can still see a charred-out car. rubble scattered all over this garden and a large crater on my left here, which left an impact after the debris fell. now, we spoke to a man who was sleeping on the second floor at the time of the impact. he said his bedroom wall collapsed in front of him. it's a miracle he actually

managed to survive calling today his new birthday. now, this is one of dozens of missiles intercepted this morning almost 70 rockets launched into ukraine as air raid sirens rang out across the this country. infrastructure was also hit leaving hundreds of thousands without power. now, kyiv had been on alert. even president zelenskyy warning toxpys, wh >> britt clennett, thank you. gio? now to the breaking news overnight, the united states announcing that anyone arriving from china will have to show a negative covid test taken within two days of leaving as china battles a rapid rise in transmission that experts fear could lead to new variants. abc's lama hasan has the story. >> reporter: this morning, the u.s. is the latest country to enforce tighter new restrictions on people traveling from china. beginning january 5th anyone flying into the u.s. from the nation will need to provide a negative covid-19 test result no more than two days before traveling which they will need to show the airline upon

departure. tighter measures are being introduced now because the u.s. is concerned about china's soaring number of cases and a lack of transparency from the chinese government. >> china had this zero covid policy and all of a sudden it was lifted and floodgates opened. >> reporter: cases have been exploding in cities across china. a grim picture is emerging with hospitals overflowing with patients because china's national health commission stopped publishing covid-19 data, it's difficult to know what's really happening on the ground. week during a very busy holiday period, including the lunar new year next month, the fear is covid-19 will keep spreading among the population. health officials say that the rapid rise in cases could increase the possibility for new variants. >> given the fact we don't have clear data about how much covid is circulating in china and what variants are circulating, i'm not surprised the cdc has taken these additional steps to keep the united states protected.

>> reporter: and just to give you a sense of the scale and the severity of the situation, on a flight from china that arrived in milan this week more than half of the passengers tested positive for covid-19. gio? >> and the fear here is that it feels like a little bit like deja vu. thank you so much. janai? to the vatican now. pope francis visiting the 95-year-old and asking the faithful to pray for him. foreign correspondent marcus moore is in rome with the latest. good morning, marcus. >> reporter: well, janai, good morning. the vatican put out a new statement saying that pope benedict was able to rest through the night and he remains lucid and is alert today. while his illness is serious, he's in stable condition as pope francis asks for prayers. this morning, an extraordinary moment in history. people across the globe and here at the vatican praying amid news that pope emeritus benedict's health is declining. >> i think he was a great pope, really. i admire him a lot.

[ speaking in non-english ] >> reporter: pope francis saying the former pontiff is very ill asking for prayers. the holy see telling reporters wednesday pope francis did visit benedict xvi at his home because his condition had worsened over the last few hours. benedict was seen visibly frail earlier this month and in august pope francis was with benedict meeting the new cardinals. benedict was the fifth oldest pope elected in the church's history back in 2005 at the age of 78 and is known for his traditional writings. he sent shock waves across the roman catholic church when he announced his resignation in 2013, the first to do so in 600 years. his sudden retirement potentially paving the way for future popes to step down too. >> it was a very, as i said, humble and bold move and generous move for benedict to resign. i think a gift for future popes. >> reporter: this new statement

released by the vatican that the pope is stable, while his illness is serious, he's in stable condition, that will be encouraging to many who have been praying for him. the 95-year-old has kept a low profile since his retirement. so many praying for comfort as his doctors care for him at the vatican. janai? >> we know you will be there in vatican city following any updates, thank you. whit? now to the intensifying scrutiny surrounding representative-elect george santos defending claims he lied about his background during his campaign. now authorities are looking into his finances too. abc's aaron katersky joins us with the latest. aaron, good morning. >> reporter: whit, good morning to you. five days from taking office, congressman-elect george santos should be packing for washington. instead, this morning he is contending with new scrutiny from prosecutors. sources told abc news federal prosecutors are now reviewing financial disclosures that show congressman-elect santos went

from near nothing to millionaire in just two years. this is how he introduced himself to voters. >> i'm a businessman that spent the last 14 years in finance. >> reporter: when he first ran for office in 2020, santos said he made $55,000 in yearly salary. in 2022 his financial disclosure form said he earned millions from his company and listed assets between $2 million and $11 million and documents show he loaned his campaign more than $700,000. democratic congressman ritchie torres asked on twitter where did all the money come from? >> i have an extensive career that i worked really hard to achieve and i'll deliver from my experience because i remain committed in delivering results for the american people. >> reporter: santos has already claimed he held jobs he did not hold, suggesting he worked for goldman sachs and citigroup when he did not. >> we can debate my resume and how i worked with firms such as -- >> is it debatable or just false? >> no, no, it's not false at all. it's debatable. >> reporter: much of his

biography is invented. santos lied about having a college degree and owning appropriate and claimed to have jewish roots even though he now says he's catholic. >> i always joked with friends in circles and said i was jew-ish. remember, i was raised catholic. i understand everybody wants to nitpick me. >> reporter: kevin mccarthy counted santos among the jewish republicans elected to congress. >> do you realize we have the largest republican jewish caucus in more than 24 years? >> reporter: the district attorney in nassau county is now looking into what she called fabrications and inconsistencies associated with santos. if there is a crime, she said she'll prosecute it. right now there is nothing to prevent santos from taking his seat in congress on tuesday. whit? >> aaron, our thanks to you. gio? we're going to turn to the rapid turnaround for the once hot housing market. for the fourth straight month, home prices fell and all signs are pointing to that trend continuing into the new year.

economic correspondent deidre bolton is here to break it all down. good morning. >> good morning, gio. there are two key headlines showing that housing is slowing. so in november pending home sales fell more than forecast and to the second lowest level on record. home prices, as you just mentioned, also falling so down for the fourth straight month. according to experts they say there's really three reasons for the slowdown -- the fed raising rates pushing mortgage rates higher making it more expensive for would-be buyers to borrow money, inflation eroding consumer' savings for down payments and general concerns about the economy which is rattling both buyers and sellers, gio. >> deidre, i think this is what everybody wants to know. with these prices coming down, is this good news for would-be buyers? >> if the would-be buyers have cash at the ready, then a resounding yes to be sure. mortgages are high. they're going higher. the average home price in the u.s., $320,000, mortgage payments at 6.5% cost $720 more per month compared to payments

from overnight. the dangerous storm pounding denver forcing spinouts, a major interstate clogged with vehicles. people sleeping in their cars overnight. that same storm set to bring heavy downpours to the east coast into the weekend. so it could be a new year's washout for millions. we'll keep our eye on that. thousands of southwest flights have been canceled already again this morning as passengers scramble to find their way home. and the man suspected of attacking paul pelosi, husband of outgoing house speaker nancy pelosi, has pleaded not guilty to charges. the suspect, david depape told federal investigators that he was targeting nancy pelosi. we have got a lot more ahead here including "avatar" blowing the box office out of the water. see what we did there? what will be the big movie in 2023? that's coming up. first, we turn to the trial of that once prominent south carolina attorney charged with killing his wife and son. prosecutors are now pointing to alex murdaugh's alleged financial crimes as a possible motive in the killings. abc's elwyn lopez has the

latest. good morning, elwyn. >> reporter: hey, janai, good morning. prosecutors say the once prominent attorney was trying to throw investigators off his wife and son, murdered, they say when he was on the brink of being caught for a decade long financial scheme. this morning, new revelations in the case of the disgraced south carolina attorney accused of killing his wife and son. in court documents obtained by ab news, prosecutors writing, alex murdaugh was simply running out of options to avoid not just accountability, but the certainty of long prison time, financial ruin. prosecutors now linking the deadly boat crash involving murdaugh's son paul to his father's financial crimes, which they say gave him a motive for murder. >> all five of us are on the same boat but we're missing one person. >> reporter: paul accused of being under the influence in 2019 crashing a boat killing a 19-year-old passenger.

the prosecution writing, paul had become a significant liability to defendant and the boat case threatened to ruin him. ul was murdered beforeis in, this is going to b allowed with fireworks and i think a lot of drama, a lot of information that we didn't have before. >> my name is alex murdaugh. please hurry. neither one of them is moving. >> reporter: murdaugh's wife maggie and son paul were shot to death at the family's home in june 2021. when police arrived, prosecutors say murdaugh allegedly misleading investigators, indicating he thought the murders were tied to the boat case. but prosecutors allege murdaugh killed them to gain sympathy and shift the focus away from his alleged financial wrongdoings. mrdaugh's defense team casting doubt on that argument saying, the state's theory that murdaugh murdered his wife and son in cold blood to distract the law firm from investigating financial improprieties is

illogical, implausible and unsupported by evidence. >> there's no evidence that alex murdaugh would have got any financial benefit from murdering paul and maggie. >> reporter: he pleaded not guilty and is accused of stealing almost $9 million from his clients and law firm and faces nearly 100 charges. >> the day of reckoning was upon him and he was out of cards to play after he's been playing every cashed he could for ten years. >> reporter: and murdaugh's defense team says that allowing this evidence into court would mislead the jury. the judge has not made a ruling on this yet. that trial is set to get under way in january. janai? >> so many developments in this case. elwyn, thank you. gio? now to the nfl quarterback, tua tagovailoa, his latest on-field concussion and the new investigation into how it was all handled during the dolphins' loss to the packers last week. abc's phil lipof is here with more. phil, good morning. >> reporter: gio, good morning

to you. all of this happening, of course, after the quarterback's pretty scary concussion back in week four. he to be taken to the hospital. this time the game was played sunday, tua told his team about symptoms monday. so this morning there are questions about nfl concussion protocol and really player safety overall. this morning, a concussion controversy and once again at the center dolphins quarterback tua tagovailoa. the qb sidelined in the league's concussion protocol for the second time this season. believed to be caused by this christmas day hit. >> tagovailoa who has got a lot of time. >> reporter: tagovailoa's head appearing to bounce off the turf. the 24-year-old shaking it off returning and finishing the game. wednesday the dolphins head coach confirming the concussion. >> he did suffer a concussion. >> reporter: the nfl's chief medical officer explaining why

concussion protocol was not initiated on sunday. >> there were no visible signs present even though there was a blow to the head and the player did not report any symptoms despite being in contact with the medical staff throughout the game, so there was nothing that would have triggered the protocol in the moment. >> reporter: the league strengthens its concussion protocol after tagovailoa took a series of hard hits earlier in the season. in week three against the bills struggling to get to his feet seeming disoriented, assessed by medical staff and sent back in to play. four days later in a game against the bengals, after this sack, his fingers seizing up immediately. widely seen as a sign of a neurological trauma. >> after an athlete suffers a concussion they are very vulnerable and that's because they are increased risk for suffering a repeated concussion. >> this is a human being. this is a recent husband, a new father, so i think that there should be some genuine concern for his long-term health. >> reporter: the nfl says a joint nfl/nflpa review of the application of the concussion protocol involving miami dolphins quarterback tua tagovailoa is now under way. we welcome that review and as we have done previously, we will report the results in

sharing her family's personal journey with brain cancer and the technology being used in hopes of helping others. morgan norwood is here with that story. good morning, morgan. >> good morning to you. we know how insidious brain cancer can be. this story providing a lot of hope to those going through this disease. diane and her husband nick weren't willing to accept a terminal diagnosis he received, so they fought for a second opinion. listen to this, within 17 hours he had a new treatment option and within 17 days, it started working. talk about a lucky number. as a reporter and anchor in chicago, diane pathieu is used to handling breaking news and tough stories. >> still wicked out here because take a look. >> reporter: but on december 21st, 2020 she received some devastating news of her own, her husband nick adamski diagnosed with brain cancer. >> when a doctor says to you your spouse has brain cancer, when he's never had a single sign of anything before, it really just was so unbelievable to me. >> reporter: pathieu was on the

air at abc station wls when she got the phone call that her husband suffered a massive seizure while at their home alone. soon he was bleeding from his brain and needed emergency surgery to remove the grade 4 glioblastoma. that would mark the beginning of a series of treatments including chemo and radiation. despite the aggressive the cancer returned and doctors once again breaking even more disappointing news. >> he did chemo and radiation, traditional, 42 days. that's when he was given his expiration date and told he only had 12 to 14 months to live. i think that is when for you you said, oh, heck no. >> reporter: defiant diane and nick went for a second opinion at northwestern medicine where they were introduced to technology called methylation and genomic profiling. think of it as taking a fingerprint of a tumor and based on that doctors can help zero in

so good to see you. it's nice to be sitting here. >> i already feel comfortable and a little happier. >> a lot of people, their moods shift during the holidays but there's an important difference, right, because you have wintertime blues and then what you call seasonal affective disorder. those are two very different things and it's important to know the difference. >> absolutely. during the wintertime it unfortunately, as you said, can be the season of sadness. there is a lot more darkness and a lack of sunlight. have a decrease in serotonin, and increase of melatonin which is probably the reason why we all feel fatigued. that leads to those two outcomes you discussed, one wintertime blues and the other seasonal affective disorder, something we call s.a.d. wintertime blues is most often found in about 10% to 20% of americans. it's associated with feelings of sadness, loneliness, but the key difference between this and seasonal affective disorder is it does not interfere with your daily life. usually it can be fixed with

lifestyle changes such as hygge whereas seasonal affective disorder affects 5% of the population and sometimes needs intervention. >> if you think you are affected by this seasonal affective disorder, definitely go see your doctor. if it's a case of the wintertime blues hygge can help. what's this all about? what is it? >> this tradition, this cultural phenomenon than originates from denmark who have some of the darkest months of winter, but system of the highest metrics of happiness. for this and a multitude of other reasons. it's just taking time away from your daily rush and focusing on yourself and things you love, prioritizing togetherness, emphasizing slow living and making sure you enjoy the quiet pleasures and embracing the change of season. >> what are some things we can do? you have props. >> some things we've already done here. i have to say first and foremost, the scent, you smell great. the scent is what you want to focus on.s,ave coedl.metimes thatrigger t

stage to stage. so it's tea water, then really late dinner. that's sort of the routine. >> and you need that energy because more than a million people will be gathering in times square. that's what expected to see the ball drop. that's what we see on camera there. but what's it like backstage for you? >> backstage, it can be hectic. as we get close to midnight, we have -- for example, this year duran duran will perform at one end of times square and the ball is at the other end and the million people seem to converge right in the middle. so we've had to fight our way through the crowds with the crew to get there in time. because if you miss the drop, it's kind of a big deal. it's the one segment you need to show up for. >> kind of what you're there for. >> wow. >> i've seen you on new year's eve. this man is walking back and forth. >> when we were asking getting prepared for this year what it's like you said that the show gets bigger and bigger every year. >> it really does. >> tell us about the rundown. what will we see saturday night?
