moving forward, finding solutions. this is abc7 news. dion: it's an end of december drenching. this is live doppler 7 which has been coughed in green most of the night. a much stronger storm is expected over the weekend. dan: the next storm will pack a real punch. but we are dealing with the latest round. ama: sandhya patel is joining us. sandhya: dan and ama, on live doppler 7 you will notice that the showers have eased. the focus is in the north bayh where we are seeing scattered showers right around boys, hot springs. we are see light showers. it's a low-level one through tomorrow. scattered showers, low visibility. slippery roads that's what you'll need to watch out for. grab the umbrellas before you go. you're looking at some showers.

the mountains wet weather prep for them started early. and for good reason. they take it very seriously. messengers warning drivers of wet and slippery roads as rain is expected through saturday. thursday night brought drizzle where preparation is well underway. >> all wood has been cut, covered with tarps. we are ready to heat the house entirely with wood. if the roads get stopped, we're planning on massive delays. it happens. mudslides, trees down. it's living in boulder creek. >> but what some might consider an anticipated inconvenience can massively impact others. >> what are you doing right now? >> i'm getting gas for my generators so i have electricity every night. >> jeremy has lived in the mountain for eight years. he said experience has taught him anything can happen. >> i've got worry about mudslides. trees coming down.

stephanie sierra dug into the issue. reporter: unhoused patients make up less than 5% of emergency admissions across california. but in son san francisco hospitals that figure is up to 32%. >> i think it's pretty impressive, and i had no idea. i thought that the rest of the state say in the urban areas was similar us to. so it's a bit shocking to me >> dr. joann's son is the medical director for st. mary's medical san francisco in san francisco. both hospitals are among the top three emergency departments in the state with the highest percentage of unhoused patients along with s.f. general. >> think it's mainly due to our location. we're very close to the tenderloin. >> doctors are seeing the same unhoused patients reapedly requiring resources and security. >> there's been many workplace violence instances in our emergency department.

i hear this even among my -- my other colleagues that it just seemed that there's more violence in general. that domino effects into our staff feeling unfit and unable to come into work so then we're short staffed. >> hospitals offering care for unhoused patients typically eat more of the cost. for example 65% of the unhoused e.r. patients at st. frances an have medical. another 20% are self paid. so the hospital often isn't reimbursed. it's impacting both hospitals financial with potential to limit staffing and bed availability. >> do you think this could lead to a staffing crisis? >> i absolutely believe that in terms of recruiting and retention. >> dr. luke don day the chief medical officer says the disproportionately unhoused paetschs in the e.r. isn't

moderate strength storm for saturday morning. moderate to heavy rain. wind gust 45 to 50 miles an hour or higher. flooding is expected on rivers but potentially the vehicles and streams in the roadway is more likely. and there's a possibility of landslides so a flash flood watch is in effect for tomorrow afternoon through saturday evening. it's for the entire bay area. the ground is so saturated. any rain that falls out is going to start flooding. especially saturday morning when the atmospheric river drenches the area around 4:00 to 6:00 a.m. 11:00. the rain eases up. still going to be raining. but then it winds down to about 4:00 in the afternoon. rainfall totals the first wave through tomorrow night is .500 of an inch. we add on to it the saturday system we're talking one to three inches of rain.
