7:03 am
from him. but we do begin with two major storms hitting coast to coast just before the new year, so let's go to mola lenghi in denver which also was hit hard by that storm. good morning, mola. >> reporter: good morning, janai. yeah, denver sitting between those two major storm systems crossing the nation, the first one that dumped snow on us earlier this week moving east affecting millions and millions of people. the planes in parts of the midwest in the crosshairs overnight. heavy, wet snow creating some pretty dangerous driving conditions in nebraska. back here in colorado, check out what happened just outside denver, a huge pileup on the interstate, while authorities have not said weather was a contributing factor roads were icy. there was freshly fallen snow on the ground, just tough driving conditions. fortunately injuries were only minor. now we're bracing for that second storm system currently impacting the west coast moving
7:04 am
east expected to be here by sunday potentially making for a very messy start to the new year. >> a dangerous mess. mola, thank you so much. let's bring in danielle breezy from wkrn in for ginger. this can get really dangerous. >> we have two systems we're watching. the first one pushing east, it is going to bring heavy rain as we head into new year's eve. flood watches up for buffalo. they had all that snow. it's expected to melt and lead to ice jams and flooding. also new york city going to be mild for new year's eve but also very wet. bston, the same thing. this atmospheric river over to the west, we've got 11 states now under some sort of alert and here's that timing on that system. we're going to see the waves of rain impacting the bay area as we head into friday night into saturday morning and heavy mountain snow. that same system going to shift south so as we head into new year's eve night, l.a. will be wet, so a lot of folks will be wet as we head into new year's eve. >> thank you for that. we'll watch the storm. see you soon. whit? now to the southwest aie says it will return to normal service today after a

week-long meltdown that left passengers stranded. flight crews unaccounted for and baggage scattered all across the country. we'll talk to southwest ceo bob jordan in just a moment but first, let's go to elwyn lopez at atlanta's hartsfield-jackson international airport for the very latest. elwyn, good morning. >> reporter: hey, whit, good morning. after eight days of scrapped flights, southwest finally getting back on track but now that airline under fire for that holiday travel nightmare. this morning, after nearly 16,000 canceled flights, southwest airlines finally catching up. >> all the flexibility and planning that we put in place to deal with the storm just wasn't enough, and so we've extended flexibility for self-service travel changes through january 2d. >> reporter: fewer than 50 flights canceled today so far. this after 96% of airline cancellations on thursday came from southwest, scrapping holiday plans for thousands. the sethmans forced to return home after their flight was delayed multiple times, and then
7:06 am
canceled, leaving the airport without their baggage and without car seats for their two children. >> we had to hold our kids in the car in the backseat because southwest said there was no longer car seats. >> reporter: southwest now facing another daunting challenge, returning a sea of luggage strewn acros the company's stock plunging as other airlines stabilize their own. as for those 16,000 flights canceled wednesday, the department of transportation now investigating. >> we will penalize southwest as we would any airline to the tune potentially of tens of thousands of dollars per violation if they fail to meet what is required of them to take care of passengers. >> reporter: and southwest says it will work on a case-by-case basis with passengers to reimburse them for the expenses incurred during disruptions. the department of transportation says that it will keep a close eye on the airline to make sure that it meets its legal obligations.
7:07 am
whit. >> elwyn, thank you. joining us now exclusively is bob jordan, the ceo of southwest airlines, in his first tv interview since the holiday.tions began over the - bob, good morning to you. thanks for joining us. we appreciate it. so your airline has said normal operations will resume today. how confident are you that will hold through the holiday weekend and can you promise a meltdown of this magnitude won't happen again? >> thanks for having me. yeah, we're off to a great start. i'm watching stats and we've launched the east coast and we have a great operation under way. it's our full schedule. 3,900-plus flights. we had a reduced schedule for about three days here prior as we reset the network. that reduced schedule the last two days has been running great. over 90% on time. very few cancels so i'm very confident that we'll operate a really tight operation today. >> as you know, we're days into this, thousands of flights
7:08 am
canceled, people stranded over the holidays. your own pilots and crew members unable to reach the people responsible for scheduling them. how did things go so horribly wrong? >> well, this -- it's a number of things. this was just an unprecedented storm for everybody, for all airlines. it was widespread across the country. record cold. for us what's different is we are the top airline in 23 of the top 50 cities so it just hit so many large locations at the same time, and we had record temperatures that did things like froze jetways, froze aircraft, froze de-icing fluid. when you're trying to solve a problem in so many locations, it becomes very, very difficult. airlines count on the aircraft and the passengers and the crew members continuing to move and when all that shuts down in so many locations it becomes very, very tough and at some point solving that problem and we have great tools and processes but solving that problem becomes very daunting. >> but, bob, forgive me, you
7:09 am
talked about -- you did talk about the weather and people understand that. and there were widespread cancellations due to the weather across the country with other airlines but southwest's situation was very different. thousands of cancellations continued for days and dayd, some have blamed the technology. what is your response to the system you operate and whether that needs to be updated too? >> yeah, let me just be straightforward here. the storm had an impact but we had impacts beyond the storm that obviously impacted southwest very differently. it really was the scope of the problems attempting to be solved, just to move crews around, keep the airline moving. we have great tools. we have regular operations, those tools and processes serve us well, but this is something that we have never seen in our 51 years, and we're making investments in our operational areas like always. there will be lessons learned from this and we'll continue to make more investments. >> transportation secretary pete
7:10 am
buttigieg said that your airline could be fined thousands of dollars per violation if you don't deliver refunds to passengers whose flights were canceled. can you guarantee those passengers will get refunds in a timely manner? >> i've had a great conversation with the secretary. we're aligned. there's no greater focus beyond safety than taking care of our customers and we're offering refunds, covering expenses, we'll be going back out with even more after that. that's the goal of the secretary, obviously, is to cover our customers and take care of them, so we're aligned there. and beyond safety there is no greater focus at this point than taking care of our customers, reuniting them with their bags, getting refunds processed. in fact, we have a special website that was put up just to take refund information, baggage information, expenses to process that even faster. >> what about some of the expenses beyond the ticket refunds?
7:11 am
extended hotel stays, some had to rent cars. many passengers whose flights were canceled had to rebook more expensive tickets to get home even on southwest. what's your obligation to them? >> well, our desire is to go above and beyond. we always take care of our customers. that's our 51-year history at southwest airlines. we'll be looking at and taking care of things like rental cars, hotel rooms, meals, booking customers on other airlines, so that will all be part of what we're covering here as we reimburse our customers and make good on this issue. i want to be really frank. this is impacting so many people, so many customers over the holidays. it's impacted our employees and i'm extremely sorry for that. there's just no way almost to apologize enough because we love our customers, we love our people and we really impacted their plans. >> will there be accountability for this meltdown, some have called for you or other executives to resign. what's your response to that? >> you know, i think step one is to get the operation back on track.
7:12 am
the best way to serve our customers is to get the network going again and i'm really pleased that we're here today and we're going to run a full network. a close second is to take care of all the things that occurred during the issues, get refunds processed, gets bags moving. those kind of things, talk to our customers and take care of them. there will be a lot of lessons learned that come out of this. we already had a great plan to invest in tools and technology and processes as we always do, but there will be a lot of lessons learned in terms of what we can do to make sure this never happens again because this needs to never happen again. >> i think a lot of people would agree with that statement. bob jordan, thank you so much for your time. we do appreciate it. >> thank you. gio, i know you were checking flights and it appears they're starting to get back on schedule. >> right now about 39 canceled
7:13 am
flights for southwest, so that's very good. much less than we've seen, nobody in the industry has seen anything quite this bad so i really hope that mr. jordan is right about getting that money back to passengers. >> that was what is so important about, whit, you pushing him to say it wasn't just weather. southwest was impacted more than any other airline. you asked the question so many people want the answers to. turning now to representative-elect george santos, this morning facing yet even more questions about his background as yet another prosecutor's office takes a closer look at his claims. aaron katersky here with the latest. good morning to you. there just continues to be more and more about this. >> he's already been caught fabricating his career, his education and background and this morning, the questions about congressman-elect george santos are piling up over everything from campaign spending to his mother's death. congressman-elect santos said his mother was in the south tower of the world trade center on 9/11. >> i get emotional. my parents were both down there the day of the attacks and fortunately none of them passed. >> reporter: in a tweet last year, santos said, 9/11 claimed
7:14 am
my mother's life. in a different tweet he said she died in 2016. his website said santos' mother died of cancer making no link to september 11th and his campaign has not clarified. santos has claimed four of his employees were killed in the pulse nightclub shooting and he conceded this week that wasn't true. >> did anyone who worked for you perish in the pulse nightclub shooting? >> that works for me directly? no. >> reporter: he claimed to attend horace mann but did not graduate for financial reasons. >> they sent me to a good prep school, which was horace mann in the bronx. >> reporter: the school said there was no record he was ever there. he now tried to move on after admitting to what he called embellishments of his resume. >> we can all admit once in our life we made a mistake. i'm having to admit this on national television for the whole country to see. >> reporter: but democrats in his district have had enough. >> we don't want to be represented by any clown in local government, in state
7:15 am
government, but especially not in our nation's capital. >> reporter: to tamp down the scandal santos has been telling local republican leaders he plans to serve one term and not run for re-election. the gop chairman in his district said he wouldn't support santos anyway in 2024 without mentioning any objection to santos taking office next week. despite a new report in "the new york times" that questions how santos spent campaign money on everything from rent to meals to airfare. janai. >> as more comes out there continues to be even more questions. whit. janai, and the world is mourning the loss of a legend. pele, the brazilian soccer star considered one of the greatest athletes of the 20th century, his passion and exuberant play paving the way for america's love of the beautiful game. matt rivers is here with more on that. matt, as a longtime soccer player and fan, this one hurts. he just touched the world. >> absolutely.
7:16 am
it is really hard to overstate the impact that pele had on the game of soccer around the world. the all-time great set to be buried in brazil early next week after what was an extraordinary life. >> here comes pele. >> reporter: this morning, the sports world united in grief as it mourns pele, a man many considered the greatest soccer player of all time. the brazilian soccer legend passed away at the age of 82, pele battling colon cancer and had been hospitalized since late november. his daughter announcing his death on social media writing, everything we are is thanks to you. we love you infinitely. rest in peace. born edson arantes do nascimento in 1940, he grew up in poverty in part honing his skills by kicking a rolled up sock stuffed with rags. >> pele, number 10, always the master and the scorer of goal number three. >> reporter: making his world cup debut as a 17-year-old in et
