[ laughter ] tomorrow, tonight, rather, is a big night at the movies. the long-awaited sequel, "avatar: the way of water" is out. it is by far the most expensive movie ever made. they say "avatar" has to make $2 billion just to break even. even elon musk was like "you guys overpaid for this." [ laughter ] but there is a plan. if the movie doesn't start breaking even by march, producers are going to send a terminator back in time to kill james cameron's mother. [ laughter ] meanwhile, the one-term-inator, donald trump, announced yesterday he would be making a "major announcement." which got everybody going. what's he going to do? would he be backing out of the race? is he suing the statue of liberty? who knows?

[ laughter ] there was a lot of speculations online. some thought maybe he was returning to twitter, releasing the files on jfk, endorsing ron desantis, choosing a running mate, starting his own political party, running for speaker of the house. well, it turned out to be none of those. trump's major announcement was this. >> hello, everyone, this is donald trump, hopefully your favorite president of all-time, better than lincoln, better than washington. >> jimmy: hornier than kennedy. fatter than taft. our first guest tonight is a mummy-slaying motion picture star who is getting big reviews for his performance in the movie, "the whale." it's playing in new york and l.a. now and opens everywhere on wednesday. please welcome brendan fraser. [ cheers and applause ] ♪ >> jimmy: welcome. this must be a fun time in your life right now. >> i'm enjoying it. >> jimmy: good. you've got this movie, you're in the leading role, you're getting these incredible reviews. you got the critics' choice award nomination yesterday. [ cheers and applause ] >> yes. >> jimmy: you guys, i remember reading when the movie came out, you were at the venice film festival, is that where it was? >> that's where it premiered. >> jimmy: you got a six-minute standing ovation or something

there? >> i think it depends on who's holding the stopwatch, tell you the truth. some italians "it's a eight-minute standing ovation!" "it's a ten-minute standing ovation!" that's a long time. >> jimmy: they do measure the minutes, don't they? >> they do. how do you clap for ten minutes? >> jimmy: i have no idea, i don't know, it would be uncomfortable. >> it would hurt -- it would take a lot of time. [ laughter ] >> jimmy: i don't think most people realize, ever think about how long eight minutes is. it's like -- it's like two songs. like two whole songs. >> yeah. >> jimmy: of clapping nonstop. is that -- that has to be embarrassing, right? >> well, it was quite overwhelming for me. >> jimmy: right, sure. >> i hadn't seen the film with an audience before. >> jimmy: okay. >> and this was a film festival audience. and they were very venetian. and quite vocal. and and darren aronofsky, bowing and saying thank you. and it's really hot. we're all thinking, let's go and get something to drink, let's get out of here. we started to make for the door. darren goes, "no, take a bow." so he's the boss. so i went back and took a -- we almost got away. [ laughter ] you did go get a drink and they released you eventually. now here you are. and you go -- like, you will -- it's not like -- you like to go meet people, you'll go to like conventions, like the comic-con. >> sure. >> jimmy: the "george of the jungle" fest, et cetera. [ laughter ] all that kind of stuff, right? >> i really enjoy meeting with everybody who put me where i am. >> jimmy: you do? >> i -- it's -- it's fun to sit at a desk and you meet people, it's kind of like speed dating in a way. [ laughter ]

or, you know -- kind of a victory lap that takes you instead of you taking the victory lap. it's like one after the next of people saying things to you. >> jimmy: yeah, right. >> sometimes unsettling when they roll their sleeve up and there's a tattoo of me on it. [ laughter ] >> jimmy: do you get a lot of that? >> normally i put a moustache on it. >> jimmy: you've seen so many tattoos of your own face on people's bodies that you have a thing you do when you see them? >> yeah. >> jimmy: wow. [ laughter ] >> if i sign my name, they'll just go get that tattooed on also. that's just a little weird. that costs extra. [ laughter ] >> jimmy: i wonder if anybody ever got the moustache you drew on there tattooed? >> you know, i don't know that. >> jimmy: uh-huh? that is strange, isn't it, boy, that's kind of crazy. people say they name their kids after you. >> i've heard that. >> jimmy: you have, wow. you've been doing these movies a very long time. i have a photograph i want to share. this is from the movie "airheads." you and adam sandler in 1994. who would have guessed that these two airheads, almost 30 years later, would both be spoken of for oscar consideration for best actor? [ laughter and applause ] do you keep in touch with adam? >> sure, yeah. we've seen each other around the ever-decreasing size of campus that is hollywood. lately we had a nice chat. >> jimmy: do you remember shooting this, or is it just -- >> absolutely, i remember most every single day. >> jimmy: really? >> yeah, it's early in your career, and everything's so fresh and interesting and fun. we were with steve buscemi and joe mantegna. >> jimmy: right, yeah. right. >> it was an all-star cast. it was great fun. we would get in at like 4:00 in the afternoon, sun's going down. i'd get my wig stapled to my head. [ laughter ] adam would eat all the chicken wings. then we'd go shoot something on top of the parking structure that's the "die hard" building,

as it was known. >> jimmy: oh, right, the "die hard" building. >> we'd stage dive off into an adoring crowd to make our escape into the arms of the police who throw us in jail. but there was a crash mat down below. and we were all really psyched to do our stunt. and steve and i and adam on action, go! we went over. no problem. adam went thud. and then years later told me that he actually had twisted his back really bad. we thought, we should have listened to joe mantegna who's like, "can you just let the grownups do the stunts, you guys?" [ laughter ] >> jimmy: he advised you not to jump off the building, yeah. >> that and wear comfortable shoes because you're going to be spending a lot of time in them on a film set. >> jimmy: is the best advice you get from actors you look up to or whatever practical advice like that? >> sure. >> jimmy: like, don't jump off buildings? >> don't jump off buildings. >> jimmy: did you take that to heart or no?

>> clearly not. >> jimmy: adam is still injured as a result of not listening to joe mantegna. >> and wearing uncomfortable shoes. >> jimmy: and wearing uncomfortable shoes. did you want to be an actor when you were a kid? is that something you started -- how old were you when you realized you wanted to? >> pretty early on. i knew i -- i didn't really do that well at academia, but i understood storytelling and i wanted to be a part of that. i was a kid who grew up going lots of different places so constantly reinventing yourself too. so it makes sense to be an actor, you're someone new every time. comfortable in your own skin, so to speak. >> jimmy: you'd come in, be the cool guy somewhere, might make a shift? >> might show up as a dweeb the next place. >> jimmy: did you tell your mom, i want to be an actor? how did it work? >> she knew that. when we lived in europe, she would take us to london to see plays early on. so i started off watching "jesus

christ superstar" on stage. "the mousetrap" when it was in its 37th year, i think it's in its 115th year now. also, gosh -- anything. i fell in love with london, and i fell in love with the culture of theater. that's where it all started. >> jimmy: do you -- oh, okay. [ applause ] other lovers of the culture of theater. did you -- yeah, and the funny -- i think one of the most fun things about being an actor is you get to play all different jobs. you get to play baseball in a movie. you were a baseball player as a kid, right? >> i was more of a little league kind -- >> jimmy: a little league baseball player. >> a baseball family for sure. fathers and sons have challenges talking to each other, they can talk about baseball. makes sense. so the year that i did that, it was the year of the baseball strike. was that '95? '94? help. >> jimmy: yeah, right around there, yeah, yeah. >> i just know because the

players who worked on the film were ribbing me. >> jimmy: you're talking about "the scout." the movie "the scout." you made with albert brooks. >> albert brooks. right, they were like, "you're the only guy getting paid to wear the pinstripes this year." >> jimmy: oh, right. >> i played a yankee pitcher. >> jimmy: you shot at yankee stadium, as i recall? >> i did. pitched from the mound, actually. >> jimmy: you did, yeah. that's got to be a dream come true, right? >> it was -- it was, yeah. before i knew to have the dream, tell you the truth. >> jimmy: okay, yeah. >> believe it or not, i got ahold of -- steve nebraska has to hit it out of the park. on the first pitch when it came time to shoot my stuff, i actually got ahold of it and it was not a bad single, right over second base. they caught me for sure but they were like, "we thought we were going to be here all afternoon." >> jimmy: the yankees, none of the yankees were there at this time because it was the strike? >> that's right, it was. they were being doubled. george steinbrenner, it was his house. >> jimmy: right, sure. >> we would be shooting, and

michael ritchie was the director. great guy, gentle giant. i can remember shooting a contract-signing scene. someone started shouting profanity and it's george steinbrenner. he's between third and home plate, "get the [ bleep ] off of my infield!" [ laughter ] these guys are freaking out because they're dragging cables across the grass. he's like -- >> jimmy: oh, so he was not kidding around? >> he was not happy about it at all. >> jimmy: wow. >> not happy about it. they had to go calm him down, you know. he had a point. >> jimmy: now -- you know what, it's one thing to play baseball, it's another thing to get shouted out by steinbrenner. that's a real professional baseball experience. >> authentic. >> jimmy: we're going to take a break. when we come back, we're going to see a clip from "the whale." brendan fraser is here. suit that conform, then another layer of clothing that maybe had cooling tubes in it, and then the prosthetics itself, which were extensive. adrien morot's done amazing work on this. to create charlie's body in obeyance of the laws of physics and gravity in a way that i don't think we've seen portrayed as authentically in films before. >> jimmy: no, for sure not, yeah. >> such as with this. there might have been a light digital curative, that was just in case the fabric was in its own movie that morning. >> jimmy: the scene or something like that, that's it? >> otherwise, what you saw is what you got, yeah. >> jimmy: charlie is a man who is homebound, who's got a lot of bad things happening to him, but is also a generally kind of a positive person? >> he's an optimist. and he has -- like a superpower

that the writer endowed him with. and that's to see the good in others and bring that out in them, even when they can't see that in themselves. and as an educator, as a teacher, which he is, he works with a laptop, the camera turned off. i think that's important in telling. he's not who -- he's not -- he's not as he presents in the world. he's an individual and a human, a father, and someone infinitely capable of care and love. that said, his world is fraught, like an ocean at sea. he's the lighthouse in the middle of it. he's visited by his caretaker and best friend played by hong chau, you saw it in the clips, she's brilliant in this. >> jimmy: yeah. >> sadie sink of "stranger things" fame more recently is fantastic in this. i know she was just on your show. >> jimmy: she was here, yeah.

>> samantha morton and ty simpkins. it's a small cast, it was a chamber piece really, an arthouse movie made during the time of the pandemic. the pinnacle of it, really. >> jimmy: do you look at the oscar odds and see, you know -- i'm sure you're aware you're like the favorite to win the oscar. or are you aware of that? [ cheers and applause ] you must be. >> if you say so, jimmy. i -- i'm aware that "the whale" could bring us to the finish line, and i'm excited for that prospect. [ cheers and applause ] thank you. and i'm sitting in the trailer, and i'm in a group chat, like, with -- you know, my team. you know, my agent and things of that sort. and they don't call.

like, ever. ever. we just text, we make sure everything's good, boom. but this particular time i'm in the hair trailer. and my phone rings, and they're facetiming me, it's a group call. i'm like, did somebody just accidentally press this? because we never facetime. so my mom comes into the hair trailer and she's like, "they're calling me, they're looking for you." she gives me the phone, i grab the phone, i look at it. mind you, it's a facetime call. everybody can hear, i don't have my airpods, nothing. "do you know i'm at work right now?" "yes, but really quick, you just got nominated for best young actor in the critics' choice awards." [ cheers and applause ] it was amazing. and everybody in the trailer, my co-workers, they were right beside me getting their hair done. and everybody's super ecstatic. we're laughing. my mom cried. speaking of, i want to point out, that is my mother. [ cheers and applause ] >> jimmy: where is your mom? hi, mom. >> my beautiful mom. >> jimmy: is your mother your manager?

>> actually -- at the start of my career, she was my manager. >> jimmy: you fired her? [ laughter ] >> let's just -- let's just say, no decisions will be made without eema mcgowin's say-so. >> jimmy: your costar was here, danielle detwiler, was here. she said she auditioned for this movie on zoom. did you audition on zoom as well? >> yeah, well -- >> jimmy: or did you text in your audition? >> that would have been very handy. but yeah, like everything, i believe, at that time -- everything was over zoom. and my first audition, i had no idea what i was auditioning for. you know. like, in the world of acting, you know. everything has to be discreet. >> jimmy: they kept it -- >> they kept it quiet at first. i had the lines from a scene in the movie. but the name of the character could have been gerald or something, who knows. so i'm reading it. and then as we go -- progress, a

month or a couple weeks pass, we get the same script again. and i'm looking at my mom like, "i read this before." they're like, "oh, yeah, it must be a call-back." it was a chemistry read. in that chemistry read, they told me what it was for. so i had probably two days to just laser focus on embodying this character. and it didn't help that i did my chemistry read in my grandmother's bathroom. [ laughter ] >> jimmy: oh, you were in -- why were you in your grandmother's bathroom? >> yes, at that time i was in atlanta. whenever i go back to atlanta, which is where i'm from, i love spending time with my family, especially my grandma. i'm in her house, we're chilling, we're chilling. it was moved up. the chemistry read was moved up. i was supposed to be back in my home. they're telling me, "you have to hop on right now." so i hop on. i'm looking for the place that has the right levels. with zoom, it's so inconvenient, you have to make your own

pedestal. you've got to get books, you've got to stack it up. you know? >> jimmy: yeah. >> they say it's not eye level so you've got to change it. so luckily it was just the right level in the bathroom. [ laughter ] so we go in the bathroom. i set it up. i do my chemistry read. from then on, gold. >> jimmy: good thing grandma didn't have to go. [ laughter ] >> i know. >> jimmy: you might not be here. [ cheers and applause ] i heard your dream is to be in a superhero movie, is that true? >> yes, yes. >> jimmy: what character do you want to play? >> oh, man. i've ran the scenario a thousand times through my head. but i have really been very selective on if miles morales ever -- >> jimmy: spider-man, yeah. >> i would love to do that. i grew up such a lover of this. and my grandfather, he was my best friend, you know. especially in this subject. so that, that was my promise to him. >> jimmy: he loved -- your grandpa loved comic books? >> every time i would go to their house, "hey, grandma," give her a hug. "what's up, grandpa?" iron man shirt, spider-man shirt, whatever. we would just sit there. and he had the dvds.

at that time i'm pretty sure netflix, anything like that, streaming services were a thing. he had the dvds and we'd sit there and watch them. so i feel like, you know -- >> jimmy: does your family ever embarrass you, being involved in your career? >> oh, man. >> jimmy: no, that's a yes? okay. [ laughter ] >> but -- i love it, though. especially, you know, my mom. with my mom being with me, you know, forever. and she gave me -- well, she gave me everything. kudos to all the moms and the parents out there. [ cheers and applause ] but she gave me my trademark. as you can see, i have one dimple. >> jimmy: hold on, i can only see one side. okay, yeah, you do have a dimple. >> so a lot of people, oh my god, that's amazing. it was a manmade dimple. i have to tell this story. >> jimmy: a manmade dimple? >> i always keep this in my back pocket to tell it. i'm in the kitchen one day. i'm running around. i'm 4, 5 years old.

and i laugh every time she tells me this. i'm running, she's cooking. i'm running around. i slid and i hit a bench that was sitting right there in our kitchen, right? and i remember this bench. we got rid of this bench a minute ago. [ laughter ] we had to get him out of there. i hit my face on the side of it. you know, i was crying, things of that nature. my mom, she didn't even want to -- she didn't want to look, she thought i might be bleeding. "make sure he's okay, please, please, please." she was running her own hair salon at this time, she was really busy. my dad takes me to the doctor. and the doctor, he says, "what happened?" and i said, as a 4-year-old, "the bench hit me." [ laughter ] but -- it sounded like i was saying the b-- >> jimmy: oh, okay, all right. >> so they come in. they're like, "say it one more time." i tell them. my dad's there, they take my dad into a separate room. "so your son is saying that

the -- hit me." and it's a whole thing. he calls my mom, "what are they going -- taking me to a separate room --" it was a crazy thing. but out of that very interesting story came my dimple.
