lisa, good to see you. the rain is coming down hard. lisa: it is pouring, we have flooding in the north bay the flood warning in effect for parts of sonoma county. the rest of the bay area is under a flood watch through tonight, here is a look at the atmospheric river. the red and orange is indicating the moderate to heavy rain across the bay all the way up to the north, this is where we are getting flooding, anywhere from a half-inch to another 2.5 inches expected throughout the morning and early afternoon. take a look at concord down to walnut creek, down along the peninsula, heavy rain from 68280 -- 680 to 280. san jose looking at later rain. wind gusts 35 to 55 miles an hour, looking at flooding, possibly landslides. look at the fog, it is

dangerous. wind anywhere from 20 to 25 miles an hour out of the south, there is a look at the wind advisory through 10:00 is the front pushes to the bay area. temperatures in the upper 50's to near 60, milder than yesterday. looking at the flood watch through the evening hours for all of us, we will see more flooding today as the cold front does not push through until about 10:00 in the north bay. as we continue to sink to the south and east, heavy rain holds on through noon east and south. for new year's eve celebrations, it is dry tonight. liz: that is good news. in the north bay, the rain is coming down hard. people are preparing for the possibility of flooding from the storm. tara campbell reporter: residents

keeping a close eye out the -- close i. >> coming up over the bridge or not. well how quickly the keep cache creek can rise. these are images from the past, floodwaters filling streets and threatening homes. >> this house flooded back in 2008, so this entire neighborhood -- most of the houses have been raised up about 45 feet. tara: recalling heavy rain last year when they were out of town. >> the neighbors were calling, they said water breached the bridge. it never quite reached our yard. so, we were ok. i do not get too terribly worried. i have flood insurance. tara: they also have friends visiting, making the drive from bakersfield and relieved to be off the road. >> my husband is like, driving is not fun. being the passenger who knows

the driver is not so fun, either. the 13-year-old thought it was great. tara: wet conditions are causing chaos on roads throughout the bay area. here at the corner of highway 12 and 121, you can see part of the road is closed off because of what conditions. cars rolling by the water. >> we actually later, we had a straight shot. on i-5, we saw there was an hour delay because of accidents. so, we had to reroute. tara: across the street, they are dog sitting. the homeowners morning what to watch for. >> they told me the different levels it could get in the backyard, there is a creek going right behind that connects with the bigger creek. i've been keeping an eye on that. it is nerve-racking. tara: they will closely be watching the creek. >> if it comes over the bridge, what we try to do is move the cars, get them to higher ground. tara: tara campbell, abc 7 news.

liz: in the east bay, the oakland zoo will be closed today during the day. customers who had reservations will be emailed refund information. the glofari was canceled last night, but they plan to have it this evening. rain has shut down the zoo four days this week. there are no chain controls in effect at the moment. let me be wet, -- be wet, if you're heading to tahoe this weekend, be prepared for snowy conditions on the way. other parts of the nation are reeling from the deadly winter storm. in new york, 39 people have died and connection to the storm since thursday. temperatures are rising as officials prepare for flooding from the incoming snow mountain around buffalo. 11 states are thunderstorm alerts. in colorado, people are -- our thunderstorm alerts. in colorado, people bashar under -- are under storm alerts.

strength to run the catholic church he had steered for eight years through scandal and indifference. pope francis will celebrate his funeral mass in st. peter's square on thursday. it is a first in which a current pope will celebrate the funeral for a former one. southwest airlines operations are slowly returning back to normal after its holiday meltdown. oakland international airport, one of the largest southwest hubs in california, is reporting no canceled southwest flights. seth was canceled around 15,000 flights over the past week. it cites weather and scheduling issues. one family considered driving 36 hours after their flight from ohio was canceled. >> we were contemplating driving home from columbus to make sure we would not get canceled again and have to stay in the airport. liz: southwest says they will offer refunds and reimburse customers for things like rental cars, hotel rooms and booking on other aiit could be days beforee

it is wet and rainy. you've been tracking all of this, was the latest? are we going to get breaks in the rain? lisa: we are, that is key to the next seven days. we have another strong atmospheric river headed our way into 2023, that will be wednesday, thursday. we have a break tonight and tomorrow for new year's day, more rain, then another break in the middle of the week. this will keep on coming. right now, the heaviest rain from now until 10:00 as we are looking at flooding occurring in sonoma county. the first flood warning of the event is happening for some of the creeks and streams that are going outside their banks. this is not an isolated event, we expect more flooding throughout the day as we will see lots of flooding, perhaps, as storm drains are clogged and nuisance flooding. we will welcome and -- in the break.

heavy rain back through san francisco, the reds and oranges, down to daly city. it's been pouring for the past several hours up through marin county. we see the cold front pushed through this morning, the rain continues until later today. as we look toward the north, these are some of the concerns through santa rosa, penn grove, looking at some in windsor and the river getting awful close to flood stage. the breaks in between the storm system today are key to help us get through the next wet week. down into the moon bay, redwood city and woodside, heavy rain. into the east bay, fremont, it's been raining heavily for you. down through the summit, boulder creek, san jose some letter returns. visibility, oakland two miles. everywhere else it is less than two miles and down to a mile in spots. if you do not need to be on the roads, it is not a good idea to

be out. 57 in mountain view, looking at the fog around the bay area. mild temperatures. as we get to with the rest of the morning hours, take a look. i 10:00, we see the rain get lighter in the north bay. it is still coming down from the east bay to the south bay. 4:00, it is dry in the north. that is the trend through the rest of the evening. as we get through new year's day into sunday, sunshine. looking at cloud sticking up through the early hours monday, then my 10:00, a weaker system heads our way. we dry out tuesday, more heavy rain expected into wednesday and thursday. tonight, anywhere from a half inch to three quarters of an inch of additional rainfall. some rain rates have been up to three quarters of an inch to an inch as we look toward heavy rain in the santa cruz mountains. ccern an scar areas, snow levels at 7000 feet and are dropping.

37 degrees in blue canyon with light snow, so it has been rain. with a winter storm warning, we are looking at up to five feet above 8000 feet, half a foot as we get to where the rest of the day. this will take us through another 24 hours, when we see the changeover to snow. even though we are having the rain, the heavy, wet snow will likely take effect until late tonight and tomorrow. we will still be soggy and the sierra nevada tonight, but we dry out into a level 1 system later this afternoon, then drive-through sunday. lighter rain monday, accuweather 7-day forecast has another strong level to wednesday, thursday and friday. we are really looking at potential problems as we get into the next several days. liz: is this good as we talk about the drought? lisa: it is, the brakes are key. this is a lot of water, so we are getting the runoff and the soil cannot absorb it. even though it is good, the

first flood warning of the season has happened this morning, that is not good. be careful. liz: absolutely. legendary newswoman barbara walters has died at the age of 93. she broke barriers with abc news, becoming the first woman to anchor in evening news program. walters would later become the cohost of 2020 and launched the view in 1997. she interviewed everyone from presidents and world leaders to celebrities. reena roy has a look at her illustrious career. reena: for interviewing the major newsmakers and stars of our time. in an news career spanning more than 50 years. >> do you feel funny crossing the bay of pigs within american? -- with an american? reena: walters went on to become the cohost in 1974,

maybe as a good newswoman. more than being remembered, i hope them inspire. reena: abc news, new york. liz: she certainly did that. what disney ceo bob iger released a statement saying quote barbara was a true legend, a pioneer not just for women in journalism, but for journalism itself. she was a one-of-a-kind reporter who landed many of the most important interviews of our time , from heads of state to the biggest celebrities and sports icons. i had the pleasure of calling barbara colleague from more than three decades, but more importantly, i was able to call her a dear friend. she will be missed by all of us at the walt disney company and we send our deepest condolences to her daughter, jacqueline. such a trail blazer, we owe her such a debt of gratitude for everything she did to pave the way for women in this industry.

buccaneer quarterback blaine gabbert is being hailed as a hero after jumping into action, helping a group of women -- people, excuse me, after a helicopter crash in tampa florida. the chopper went down off the coast of davis island. if family was on the sightseeing helicopter ride with a pilot, crashing into the ocean, singing took 10 to 15 seconds for the cabin to fill up with water. >> i was expecting worse case scenario. i was doing the right thing. guys who do the exact same thing i did, i just happen to be in that situation. thankfully, it all turned out positive. liz: they all got out safely and, to their surprise, help shut up just in time. blaine and his brothers were able to get them on their jet skis. through all the praise, he's the real heroes are tampa police, firefighters, the coast guard and marine patrol who responded. just ahead, new year, new laws. but will change in your workplace starting in january,

>> building a better bay area, moving forward, finding solutions, this is abc 7 news. liz: a storm is sweeping through the bay area. will it be a damper on new year's celebrations? lisa is tracking the storm as we countdown to the end of 2022. this year went by fast. lisa: the storm system will move through relatively quickly, between now and 10:00 area some flooding concerns, we are looking at the atmospheric river taking aim on the bay area.

has been issued until 12:15, we are looking at flooding around the north bay, stage. certainly some heavy rain from pleasant hill through walnut creek, looking out toward clayton. as we go further south along the east bay and south toward san leandro, moderate to heavy rain into oakland, 880, hayward, some lighter rain. looking at rain showers, you c see where it is heavy and moderate from parts of southern marin down through bayview. we've seen over a half-inch in the south bay, a level two system with a moderate to heavy rain throughout the day today. gusty south wind ahead of the system, northwesterly wind behind it. one to two mile visibility, there are the gusty winds.

wind advisory until 10:00, we could see gusts up to 50 miles an hour. right now, mid and upper 50's. snow level continues to lower, we will look at a couple hours of rain before it gets dicey. back home for new year's, we begin to dry out after about 4:00. still looking at a rainy day today, then a nice break for new year's day. liz: stormy conditions blamed for rock slides, spinouts and car crashes. rain and speed may have contributed to this terrible accident southbound highway 101 in novato thursday night. two teenagers were killed. the driver, a 16-year-old, along with a 17-year-old female passenger. he was a junior at terra linda high school in san rafael. three other passengers were hospitalized. officers say the honda civic struck the center divide. >> it appears everyone in the

vehicle was younger. we investigate crashes, especially when it relates to injuries or fatalities, when you see youth involved, it makes it that much more difficult. liz: in sausalito, this rockslide came down onto southbound 101 near spencer avenue early yesterday morning. the big rocks hit seven cars, giving them flat tires. not long after, he jackknifed big rig blocked all northbound lanes of 80 near high street. it took the chp about four hours to clear it. in napa county, caltrans clues -- crews were clearing debris to prevent it from flooding this weekend. miles canyon road is back open this morning, all lanes in both directions were shut down today from a landslide that hit just after 11:00 a.m. yesterday. caltrans crews responded and cleared the area. you can keep track of the storms and wet weather with the abc 7

death of four university of idaho college students tracked down thousands of miles away. andy field has the story. andy: four students were found stabbed to death, police arrested a suspect, identifying him as bryan kohberger. he was arrested at a home 2500 miles away from campus in pennsylvania. reporter: it is in this gated community behind me that a swat team, including the fbi in pennsylvania state police, swooped into the suspects parents home around 2:00 a.m. andy: investigators revealing he is a graduate student at washington state university, 10 miles away from the university of idaho. kaylee goncalves, madison mogen, xana kernodle and ethan chapin were found dead. two other remakes were not injured. >> these murders have shaken our community and no other arrests

will bring back these young students. we believe justice will be found through the criminal process. andy: one victim's father says he will be there when the suspect is brought idaho. >> this guys going to have to look me in my eyes multiple times. i am going to be looking for the truth. andy: the parents of ethan chapin saying we are believed to this chapter is over because it provides a form of closure. however, it does not alter the pain. we miss ethan and our families forever changed. investigators say dna evidence led them to kohberger but would not say if he knew any victims. the murder weapon has not been recovered. kohberger is charged with four counts of first-degree murder and one count of felony burglary, a sigh of relief for the small college town. kohberger is due back in court in pennsylvania for next edition hearing on tuesday. -- for an extradition hearing o tuesday. liz: the state revisits a law

from 1864 that criminalized nearly all abortions, yet was barred from being enforced for decades. after the supreme court overturned roe v. wade earlier this year, the state attorney general asked a judge to allow the law to be implemented. the court did not repeal the law altogether, did determine doctors cannot be prosecuted for performing abortions, because other arizona laws passed over the years have allowed the procedure. house lawmakers have a least six years of former president trump's tax returns. the documents reveal he paid little or no income tax for several years while in office. as elizabeth schulze he tells us, the former president says the returns represent his success. elizabeth: returns are public as lawmakers lift the veil on his finances. ♪ and means committee publishing

from the south beach camera over the bay bridge this morning, we are counting down to the new year. we have the countdown clock on the bottom of the screen. the centers for disease control is flagging a new variant of covid-19 as a cause for concern. the agency estimates responsible for more than 40% of new infections across the country. it is overtaking other variants believed to be responsible for a waiver of covid cases over the fall. scientists believe it is a spinoff from a blend of two earlier omicron strains. it is a christmas and new year's tradition brood right here in san francisco. abc 7 got a close look at anchor brewing companies brewing process as it wraps up its famous holiday ale. ♪ >>

out with a christmas ale every year, different tree on the label, different ingredients. it is something we look forward to because we know, regardless of anything else, that beer is going to be different every year. we get to have a little fun. we use secret ingredients, so to say, every year. go in on different parts of the process, so it is always fun. it is part of the festive atmosphere, we enjoy it. he purchased the brewery in the 60's, he is credited with pioneering all the future brands that would come out. christmas ale is a huge one. the first label in 1975, the tree is a big piece of the changing of the seasons. this time of year, big piece of what we are looking at. he thought that was a beautiful thing to do with the labels, find a tree in nature that epitomized the way he wanted that beer to come across. 48 under the belt, coming up on 52 years. christmas is a joyous time -- 50
