explosions continuing into this morning with reports of iranian drones being shot down. at least one person was killed. dozens injured and several buildings in kyiv were damaged. here at home, we have new details of the university of idaho murders and the suspect now in custody, police are saying that they believe 28-year-old bryan kohberger acted alone and don't anticipate additional arrests. police haven't released any information on a motive or possible connection between the suspect and the victims. pope francis remembering his predecessor, the late pope benedict xvi. during his new year's mass at the vatican this morning. ines de la cuetara is in rome for us. good morning, ines. >> reporter: good morning, former pope benedict xvi will lay in state here. starting on monday. his funeral will be held on thursday. the city of rome is expecting 50,000 to 60,000 people to attend. a spokesman for the vatican saying it will be simple and solemn and also historic, first time a sitting pope presides

over the ceremony of predecessor. this morning, tributes continue to pour in for a beloved member of the abc family, legendary barbara walters. a pioneer in tv news, her career spanning more than 50 years in broadcasting. our diane sawyer saying, barbara was a trail blazer, a singular force who opened the door for every woman in television news. she was also the history-maker right down the hall. my friend and road buddy eager to talk about the news world, the decades of passionate work, the curiosity and laughter gets us through the sadness. gratitude she says, and a salute from all of us who know what we owe her. president biden saying in a tweet, barbara walters has always been an example of bravery and truth, breaking barriers while driving our nation forward. her legacy will continue as an inspiration for all journalists.

third run for the presidency a- while facing multiple investigations and the supreme court set to make decisions that could have political repercussions. we're joined now by devin dwyer, senior investigative reporter aaron katersky and white house correspondent maryalice parks. good morning to all of you. maryalice parks, let's start with you. so what is president biden's agenda looking like with you in the new year with congress? >> everything in washington is about to change, we're about to see that divided government and the white house knows that they have to feel that out and see what's possible to get done working with republicans. the reality is they're going to be playing a lot of defense, we know that republicans have promised on day one to launch investigations into president biden's border policies, the withdrawal from afghanistan, even investigations into hunter biden, the president's own son and his personal finance. >> and maryalice, given the

gridlock here, what are the chances of something, a big issue actually getting done? >> reporter: that's a good question. like i said, they have to sort of see what republicans are willing to work with them on. we know the president would like to write into law more voting rights protections, more protections for reproductive health care, access to abortion. he wants to get anything done that gets at the gun violence epidemic in america. of course, hanging over everything when we get back is going to be this major political question. will he run again? the president said he was going to use this time over the holidays with his family to make that personal decision one way or the other. whatever he decides, that will fundamentally shape the next two years, whit. >> a lot of questions about who will run in 2024. maryalice, thank you. let's bring in aaron katersky, and aaron, it's looking like a complicated year. speaking of 2024 for donald trump running for the presidency once again, but also as we noted, facing multiple investigations. >> yes, whit. he made it through 2022 unscathed by any criminal charges, but for former

president trump, 2023 could be a little more legally perilous. a special counsel appointed by merrick garland is now overseeing two investigations involviiing president jack myth has brought a number of trump associates before a grand jury, and he has issued subpoenas to election officials in battleground states trump lost. investigators are still working to determine whether there are more documents with classified markings in trump's possession. in both of these cases, trump faces legal exposure not only for what happened, but also for any attempt to obstruct investigations. there are prosecutors in fulton county, georgia. they're conducting their own investigation into the efforts to change the results of that state's presidential vote, and 2023 also remains the subject of a criminal investigation right

here in new york for the manhattan district attorney's office which successfully prosecuted trump's company for fraud. that company is going to be sentenced in a couple of days. >> interesting to see what impact all of this could have on former president trump's support as well heading into the new presidential election year. thank you so much, aaron. also, the supreme court speaking of that, set to decide on a number of important cases this year including ones that could shape the political environment. so, devin dwyer, what are some of the cases that you're watching closely now? >> the supreme court will dominate political debate in if last year was abortion and guns the coming year could guns the coming year could be defined here at the supreme court by ruling on the issues of race. they're likely to limit the voting rights protections. how our election maps are drawn. there's a major case that could potentially roll back a landmark law that's protected native american children and tribes for 40 years.

all of that is significant of course, also major decisions on gay rights, can businesses deny service to lgbtq americans? they'll weigh in on biden's immigration plan and a huge case as you said on the election, big impact for the next presidential election, governing how states decide where and how we can vote. those decisions will be expected by the end of the june. and one more blockbuster here, a late add the supreme court next month will hear two challenges to president biden's student debt relief plan, a lot on the line there, they'll decide whether that plan can go forward. >> absolutely. 40 million americans with student debt. implications for taxpayers as well. devin dwyer, aaron katersky, maryalice parks, thank you all so much. we truly appreciate it. eva, over to you. now to fears of a recession in 2023, many economists predict it will indeed happen, but there are ways to lessen the financial pain and make your money work for you. economic correspondent deirdre bolton joins us now.

good morning to you, deirdre. >> reporter: eva, it's a new year and getting fiscally fit has the same appeal of cutting out sweets or establishing a gym routine, but we have some tips to help you in 2023, pay down, pay off your credit cards, the average credit card rate is higher than 19%. it will move higher with the fed's next rate. some store cards around 30%. if you're a good customer you can negotiate with your credit card company but you do need to ask. if possible boost your emergency savings. the silver lining of higher rates, you can get paid a little bit more than you did last year to save, so keep investing in your company's retirement account. this is a great time to invest because you're getting better prices. >> deirdre, some questions from our viewers. question one, how do you realistically stay on a budget when there are so many unknowns? >> that's a great question and very true, there are budgeting

apps to help you, two popular ones, mint or ynab, which is short for you need a budget. you'll see where your money is going, and few see that you're spending a disproportionate amount in one category that's not even important to you, that's one answer, but there are also apps such as rocket money or trim that let you track your monthly subscriptions, so maybe you use one streaming platform more than the others, you can cut something, all these bit and pieces add up. >> those subscriptions certainly do. deirdre, what can we safely invest in that's not crypto, the stock market or too risky overall? >> janai, ibonds. inflation bonds, you can buy them from the u.s. treasury. the government pays you back with interest. some returning 7%, that's pretty good this environment. cds, certificate of deposits. they'll return about 4.5%. to learn more about these or other low-risk investment

options, nerd wallet and bank rate, excellent sources of information if you have to do a quick search online. >> thanks, deirdre. now to your health in the new year, so many people choose improving their health and fitness as a resolution but making that manageable can be a big challenge especially in the covid era. abc news medical contributor dr. darien sutton is here to help us. i guess we should start with the question about covid, what have we learned over the past year about covid and how it affects public health? >> good morning. there's no question that this pandemic has had massive changes in all of our lives, for a great period of time, we lived with a lot of uncertainty and that collectively increased our fear and anxiety and our stress, but thankfully today we're a lot more informed. some things to look to, we have more than 75% of american adults that have gotten their primary vaccine. the hospital has clinical guidelines for the treatment of covid-19 and we also understand who's more at risk comparative

to others and most importantly we have vaccines. when we're looking toward the future and trying to settle our new normal, it's important we're trying to figure out what with learned during this pandemic. not the first time that pandemics have changed the way we protect ourselves in society. for this pandemic we've learned how to prevent respiratory illnesses. so, again, it's about stepping into that new normal, grabbing bringing it with us to the future. >> lot of people have put off routine medical care these past two years. where should people begin? >> first off, it's deciding how often do you need to see a doctor. and that really depends on your age. for those in your 20s you probably don't need to see a doctor every two to three years. for those in their 30s and 40s every other year. after 50, every year.

now's the time when you want to sit down and understand your coverage and health insurance mainly to see if there are any additional benefits. if you don't have health insurance, check for local community health centers and you can search for local free health screenings that happen in various parts of year and carving out time on how you can pursue the different avenues. to get coverage for yourself. plan ahead and avoid waiting until you have an emergency. >> and what about mental health care? >> absolutely, it's something that's becoming more and more important and at the forefront, of all discussions when we're discussing health, unfortunately anxiety and depression have increased throughout the pandemic, but we have seen steady trends up throughout the past ten years. i think we can start at home, first and foremost, mind our stress, practicing things like meditation and mindfulness. also asking your healthcare provider for a referral for a mental health provider. many people believe that you have to wait for a problem to seek out therapy, but you don't. understand what to do in an
