francisco suffered significant storm damage during yesterday's downpour. we went to city officials to find out why the area got hit so hard. good evening and thank you for joining us. the bay area is cleaning up and drying out today after the new year's eve storm dumped near historic amounts of rain. our reporter spoke with owners in san francisco, who say clogged storm drains created a raging river in the mission. reporter: there is an epic cleanup in this restaurant in san francisco's mission neighborhood. this was the eatery before the storm and this was after. the moment heavy rains brought at least three to four feet of floodwater rushing in. >> we noticed it started to pool in the street and probably within 20 minutes or so, it was coming in the front. reporter: the owner says his staff was preparing bento boxes

for new years when things spiraled into an emergency after floodgates failed. >> half of us standing on these tables here and the rest of them inside and at a certain point it was clear there was nothing to do so we decided to evacuate. i had people line up and jump into chest deep water to wade into the street. it was pretty crazy. reporter: as you can see, this is on the sidewalk after it nearly floated away. >> this is the future. reporter: this person spotted floating down 14th street, watching as the floodwater busted through the door. this motorcycle storage business was quickly underwater. >> within 15 minutes, the garage door busted, cracked, and water started pouring in. this place was full and half an hour. reporter: a big cleanup now underway, image estimates still unknown. rainbow grocery on folsom street

was flooded, a sign on the door telling customers the store was closed. employees dressed in ppe cleaning up inside. how would you describe the damage inside? >> this is the worst flood we have seen here and we have flooded before. >> we are sanitizing and doing a lot of deep cleaning right now. reporter: many cars left submerged and any got towed away. christina was not optimistic about her ford escape. >> it was totally flooding, the engine lights were flashing and things. i don't know if it will be fixable. reporter: many business owners blamed storm dreams for not working properly after more than five inches fell in the city. the san francisco public utility telling us that in this area, clogged catch basins were not the cause of the flooding. rather, this was an extreme weather event that exceeded the capacity of any system. in san francisco, cornell barnard. dion: the rain has stopped for

now, flooding fears remain a can serious concern in the south bay. santa clara county officials cite the reservoir is likely to spill over tomorrow morning. urged people who live downstream to evacuate now. people are asked to avoid the reservoir, especially along highway 101 in gilroy. park rangers spend new year's day inspecting trails, creeks and roads in san mateo county. runoff from yesterday's heavy rain continues to flow downstream and many streams and creeks remain above flood levels. several areas were closed due to flooding, including coyote pointe and sawyer camp. people are also warned to stay away from beaches after our powerful storm due to sewage concerns. san mateo county has closed all county beaches and the county advises people to avoid swimming in the ocean and bay waters for at least three days after the rains and and the water is tested. crews responding to mudslides as

well, rock slides and bumud collapses throughout the city. storm related issues also shut down 580 yesterday in alameda county. it is back open but stretches of highway 35 in woodside at fremont were closed today due to downed power lines. in santa cruz county, battering rain lined for this largest single on glen haven road. highway nine is closed north of santa cruz after a number of mudslides swept over the road. there is no estimated reopening time. the first confirmed storm-related death has been reported in santa cruz as well, or a 72-year-old person died at a beach yesterday after being struck by a fallen tree. to our local weather, we got to dry out a little today, we saw the sun. it is going to be pretty significant rain. >> we have a light system and

another atmospheric river, talk about the rain yesterday, the rain totals are so impressive. san francisco, 5.46 inches. our second all-time what is today ever. oakland, all-time what is day on record, 4.75 interests -- inches. it was a phenomenal event. here's a look at what is happening now. we had a chance to dry out but we have increasing clouds overnight into tomorrow morning because we have a level 1 storm arriving. generally less than half an inch, light to moderate rain. the heaviest rain will fall midday through the early evening hours so you can get ready for that. then we have a bigger storm coming. that is the heavy rain moving through at 3:00 that could even bring snow to higher elevations. this system quickly clears out and i will talk about the heavier rain in the accuweather forecast coming up. dion: thank you. a reminder, you can get the

latest forecasts and weather updates any time on the abc 7 streaming app. it is available for roku, apple tv, fire tv and google tv devices. a second earthquake shook part of humboldt county two weeks after the area already suffered quite damage. a 5.4 magnitude damage at about 10:30 this morning at red crest, about 30 miles southeast of rio dell. usgs says shaking was felt as far north as the oregon border. the police department shared this photo with us -- this video, showing their lobby shaking. the city was hit by a quick last month. the police chief says they are dealing with new damage. >> some of the damage i've seen, some houses off of foundations. we have a crack's in some of the streets, a lot of windows broken from some of the businesses and homes. right now we are still assessing the damage for the city. dion: today's quake follows a

6.4 magnitude shaker on december 20 near ferndale lamed for two deaths and 11 injuries. it caused widespread damage to homes and roads and even knocked out power and water to tens of thousands of people. the rain was so severe in sacramento that the city is under a winter storm state of emergency. rising creeks and rivers of swallowing up roads. we will look at some of the rescues and what city officials blame for all of the flooding. plus, rain here usually means snow in tahoe. what resorts are saying about conditions tod

how do you know when you've made the right decision? it's the feeling you get in your gut, the one that tells you what's right or what's wrong. it's the voice inside you that says, "i'm buzzed...better leave the car when it's time to go." buzzed driving is drunk driving. dion: sacramento county officials have issued a state of emergency following the storm. torrential rain, high winds and dangerous flooding left the valley floor impassable. one person died in a submerged vehicle. the storm downed power lines, swelled rivers and shut down a major artery. there were evacuations in wilton and triggered evacuations triggered the shutdown of highway 99. the driver of this chevy tahoe was brought to safety. a fire truck was able to negotiate floodwaters to reach

her. a helicopter attempted a second rescue nearby but the pilot decided it was too risky. >> a rescue in t circumstances can be incredibly efficient for what it is but it is not something they are eager to do if it is not completely necessary. dion: the floodwaters are receding but it could be many more hours before roads are clear. more than 24,000 customers remained without power this afternoon. down from 145,000 after winds toppled trees. rain is forecasted to return tomorrow with another storm expected wednesday and thursday. one of the founding members of the legendary r&b group the pointer sisters has lost her battle with cancer. anita pointer passed away saturday in los angeles. she and her sisters began singing together more than 50 years ago in their hometown church and oakland.

the group have 13 top 20 hits in the 70's and 80's, including neutron dance and jump. they also won three grammy awards. anita pointer was 74 years old. today isn't just new year's day, it's also the final day of kwanzaa. the last of the seven-day observance is known as imani, s elevation of faith. celebrations have been holed throughout the bay area during the observance. it is a celebration of african-american culture and the other six days offer unity, collective work, economics, purpose and creativity. we want to take a moment and remind you you can watch the rose parade right here on abc 7. it will air tomorrow morning starting at 8:00. just ahead, we will take you to tahoe to check out conditions today. and we are about to learn just how the recent downpours are impacting the drought. early indications are promising. frances: we have a level 1 light

[cheering] dion: what a way to welcome in the new year. the skies over san francisco cleared just in time for last night's new year's eve fireworks spectacular. crowds, you probably heard them, poured into the streets along the embarcadero and they were cheering and even dancing. actually able to see the fireworks for ones, and ready for new beginnings. this week, the state will assess how much of an impact these storms are having on the water supply. on tuesday, the department of water resources will conduct the first snow survey of the season. our media partners at bay area news group report this year is close to the second largest snowpack it has seen into decades. that's with even more snow expected in the coming days. the snow is measured to the forecast, the amount of water that will melt into reservoirs.

yesterday's storm delivered a gorgeous start to the new year palisades ski resort in tahoe, but it is also delaying business. the resort has received three feet of new snow in the last two days. officials say despite the new snow, they expect to be slow to open both palisades and alpine meadows. a message on the resort website says expect an impact to operations today as we dig out. maybe no digging for us but definitely some heads up when it comes to the rain and keeping umbrellas handy. frances: yeah, and the sierra will get more snow. i will show you that in a little bit. right now, level storm one entering the bay area, you can see on the satellite. increasing class tonight and rain moves in tomorrow. here is a live look from our roof camera, you can see some traffic on the embarcadero. a lot of folks are out to enjoy the dry day. temperatures a bit warmer, some upper 50's. in san francisco, td the

city. you can see the bay bridge. in santa rosa, 54 and we are cooling down into the low 50's in a few spots like fairfield and livermore at 52. tomorrow, storm level 1, a light storm, generally less than half an inch for most areas. we could see the heaviest rain from around midday to early evening. i will show you the timing with the forecast animation. increasing cloud cover, light showers move in and the yellow is the heavier rain and the darker is the moderate rain, more in the north bay than the peninsula. it clears out tuesday and we have another chance to dry out. rainfall estimates generally less than half an inch. we could see more in half moon bay and less in some other areas. santa rosa, closer to a quarter of an inch.

lows tonight, upper 30's for parts of the north day and low to mid 40's around the bay area. this under cloudy conditions. tomorrow afternoon, systems coming in from the northwest. temperatures will be mainly near 50 degrees for almost everybody. colder numbers in the north bay, upper 40's through santa rosa and napa, low 50's and the bay area, san francisco 52. there is a winter weather advisory so you don't want to travel to and from the sierra from 10:00 tomorrow morning until 4:00 a.m. tuesday because they expect another five to 10 inches of snow above 5000 feet and two to six inches above 3000 feet so that won't be a great time to drive. get ready tuesday as we dry out, it will be a good time to drive to tahoe and get ready for the next atmospheric river. it comes in wednesday all the way through thursday and then we have showers tapping -- tapering off into friday.

rainfall amounts, one to three inches, possibly not as much as yesterday, but the ground is already so saturated so we could see a stronger impact wednesday, thursday into friday. tomorrow will be the coolest day and then tuesday, dry up and gear up for the next system. wet possibly through next weekend as well. >> now, sports from abc7news. >> happy new year. the 49ers on a roll looking for the ninth straight win while the raiders are just looking to keep playoff hopes alive. if this is the kind of football we can expect in 2023, sign me up. cc sabathia lighting the memorial torch before the game. brock purdy finds george kittle in the end zone. a little tap dance and stays in, 49ers take a four point lead. the raiders answer before the end of the first half. a toetapping catch of their own. adams is incredible and a native so you've got to like him.

the oakland zoo tonight. zoo is closed because of a sinkhole near the interest. tonight was supposed to be the reopening night of their event, but sadly that is canceled for safety reasons. engineers called to the site yesterday say with additional rain in the next several days, the sinkhole could worsen. the zoo will be closed at least two weeks for repairs. here is a look at some of the stories we are working on for abc7news at 11:00 tonight. what is the greenest way to get rid of your christmas tree? we have a local idea that starts tomorrow. on an optimistic note, this little one waited until just six minutes into the new year to come into the world. baby ezekiel was born at 16 at kaiser becoming the first baby new year in the bay area for kaiser
