>> this is abc 7 news. >> dry, sunny and clout-free for new year's day. but a night and day difference from 24 hours before. scenes like this from redwood city to dublin. the bay area now with little time to rebuild, prepare, and recovered before the next round of rain returns. good evening and thank you for joining us. i am dion lim. a busy week awaits us. we have team coverage on the flooding, mudslides and road closures across the bay area. first let's get a check frances dinglasan on the new storms moving in. >> there is another atmospheric

river heading our way and it will arrive wednesday and thursday. yesterday's storm was so impressive. 24 hour rainfall totals in san francisco. 5.46 inches. that is almost 25% of our annual rainfall. same thing with oakland. that beat their all-time wettest day ever. redwood city, 4.47 yesterday. the good news is for tonight not much to worry about. increasing cloud cover ahead of a system that is going to be a level one on the storm impact scale. this system moves through tomorrow bringing us generally less than .5 inches for most areas, and the heaviest rain will fall midday through the early evening. i will show you the forecast animation and you will see still pretty dry, then around 1:00 it starts to sweep through and it quickly exits the bay area tomorrow night.

i will have rain totals for your neighborhood and more about the atmospheric river. dan: also on the peninsula, san mateo county is warning people to stay away from local beaches until there is at least three days of clear weather. officials say switch is impacting the coast. tonight, tara campbell found one neighborhood in the thick of it. tara: the boots are on and power washers out. residents in one pacifica neighborhood cleaning up. >> we started flooding from the sanitary sewer which is the toilets and showers and eventually this entire block was flooded all the way down to there. all the yards were supersaturated. it smelled horrible. tara: capturing images of the rising waters and rushing sewers. >> it is all pulling up and the sewage is overflowing and going into the storm drain. frankly it is just disgusting.

it is not good for the fish or the people. tara: the san mateo county health department putting out an alert, saying sewage has impacted ocean and bay waters, advising people not to swim. >> once they turned on the pumps, it cleared out and about one hour and came down. of course the sewage continued for at least five hours after that. tara: toilet paper still caked on the roads. another concerned resident. >> he looked down these streetst per and fecal matter. tara: he says the water rose quickly. were you worried for your home? >> absolutely. i have kids and now everything is contaminated with fecal matter. >> county health said you cannot have kids or pets in contact with this and you should clean it up. the city came by and vacuumed some of this up. tara: and the cleanup continues. dion: disgusting. happening now, a live look at

apg&e outage map. east bay central valley have been hit hardest. high winds and downed trees contributed to the power outages. pg&e crews are working around the clock to restore service. a restaurant was without power for two days. the owner bought a backup generator to run the kitchen after constant outages but that was not enough to save more than $10,000 in spoiled food. >> a single owner in a small business, it is a lot of money. dion: it is the restaurant's busiest time of year. the backup generator helped with service for local customers with the outage drove away online bookings. pg&e restored power to the restaurant earlier tonight. tonight, a massive cleanup is underway after heavy rain caused thousands of dollars of damage at the oakland zoo. fortunately says no one was hurt. j.r. stone has more on the issue

that will shutter the beloved landmark for repairs. j.r.: this is what it looked like saturday as the rain came down. this is what it looked like in the same spot on sunday. >> the incredible volume of the water that was coming down wreaked havoc across the zoo. drainage systems were not able to keep up. mud was coming off the hillsf as sinkhole formed under the vehicle entrance during the reign. now the facility will be closed for at least two weeks because of that. >> i was shocked when i heard the news they had a single. j.r.: chris drives a school bus and goes to the oakland zoo once a week. >> is a bright spot for me. i cannot amount -- i cannot imagine not going every week.

i love the place. j.r.: this should give you an idea of how bad it is out here at the zoo. i am 6'5" and these massive drainage pipes could not handle all the water when it came down. >> it has been probably 50 years since we have seen something of this magnitude. j.r.: because of the damage, the zoo's lantern festival is also closed. refunds will be given, but still a shame to those like caitlin jackson, who has already attended the event twice this year. >> people don't think about how just some rain, we need it so desperately in the state, but the wrong time in the wrong volume can really cause problems. j.r.: as for when the zoo will open backup? >> i don't know. we are hoping in a few weeks. we are going to do the best we can, we have the best contractors to get a fixed, and we are going to do our best to open up as soon as possible. j.r.: j.r. stone, abc 7 news.

dion: take a look at this. the road crumbled down the hillside. 580 was also shut down. it is now back open, but stretches of state road 84 were closed today due to flooding. we also saw crews pumping water along this stretch of road at mission boulevard and fremont. sr 84 is closed from that intersection through niles county road. in santa cruz county, rain is blamed for this large sinkhole near soquel. highway nine is closed just north of santa cruz after a number of mudslides swept over the road. there is no estimated reopening time. this is the first confirmed storm related death reported in sandy -- in santa cruz, after being struck by a fallen tree. so, what was the scene like in

andrea flores was last seen earlier today. she is 3.5 years old with blue eyes and brown, braided hair. she may be traveling with her father, three year -- 33-year-old victor flores. he could be headed to mexico. if you see them, please call 911. also some news we are sharing tonight, actor jeremy renner is receiving care after being injured while plowing snow earlier today. his publicist says it was a wer-late aident and h is in critical but51-year-d s bm modesto junior college before going on to star as hawkeye in the marble movie series, and earned two other oscar nominations. it is unclear where the accident happened, but his publicist says his family is with him tonight. we will keep you posted and let you know as soon as we learn more.

big news for bart commuters tomorrow, more trains will be in service after the completion of a seismic retrofit project. four additional early-morning morning trains will go into service. after 9:00 p.m. trains will run every 15 minutes. that is expected to reduce wait times in san francisco. developing news, a second big earthquake shook part of humboldt county today, less than two weeks after major damage there. a 5.4 magnitude quake hit about 10:30 this morning about 30 miles southeast of rio dell. the usgs says shaking was felt as far north as the org on board. -- the oregon border. ooh. that was the view inside one home. power is mostly back on in the town tonight, a town that was hit hard on the summer 20th. the police department share this

video, showing their lobby shaking today. the chief says the cities is not dealing with new damage. -- the city is now new damage. >> huge cracks in some of the streets, a lot of windows broken. right now we are still assessing the damage for the city. dion: last month's quake in that area is blamed for the deaths of two people and injuring 11 more. it knocked out power and water to tens of thousands of people. tonight, sacramento county officials are issuing new evacuation orders in rural areas from drastic flooding. there is already a local state of emergency in effect. the town of point pleasant near i-5 is under the new evacuation order for risk of dangerous flooding overnight. caltrans says part of highway 99 near elk grove is likely to be closed until tomorrow after flooding breached two levees

yesterday near wellton. one man was found dead, submerged in his vehicle. dozens of others stranded drivers had to be rescued. the driver of the chevy tahoe was brought to safety. a firetruck was able to negotiate with floodwaters to reach her. a helicopter attempted a second rescue nearby, but the pilot eventually decided it was too risky. >> a rescue in the best of circumstances can be incredibly effective and efficient for what it is, but that is not something that they are eager to do if it's not completely necessary. dion: at one point last night more than 145,000 sacramento customers were without power. luckily that is now less than 15,000. happening now, wet weather making for slick, tricky driving conditions around lake tahoe. taking a live look from one of the caltrans camera sandy sierra, a lot of snow and shiny pavement.

you can see the drive on interstate 80 remains very dangerous. chains are required right now on vehicles heading in either direction through that area. then part of highway 50 is being rerouted because of this. several large boulders fell onto highway 50 east of khyber's during the storm last night. those boulders are large enough that they will have to be blown up in order to be removed. this week the state will assess just how much of an impact these storms are having on the water supply. tuesday, the department of water resources will conduct first snow survey of the season. our media partners the bay area news report that the sierra is close to the second largest snow packet has seen in the last two decades, and that is with more snow expected in the coming days. snow is measured each early spring. you and i would just talking because i thought with all the rain we had yesterday, we must

be making such a dent in the drought. frances: i was explaining to you how we had a little burst of rain, but the drought is more like a marathon so we have a ways to go before we can say the drought is over. i want to show you live doppler 7, you can notice increasing cloud cover ahead of the storm that is arriving tomorrow. we can still enjoy this pretty view as we look down towards san francisco. temperatures are dropping into the 40's but san francisco is currently 53. san jose down to 49. santa clara 45. this time from the east bay we can see clear across the bay into san francisco and the bay bridge. more temperatures in the 40's. upper 40's right now in napa and fairfield. quite a bit cooler and temperatures tomorrow will be a lot cooler than what we experienced today. in the 60's was sunshine and we have a nice day to dry out.

the storm impact scale tomorrow is at level one. generally less than .5 inches for most areas. like to moderate rain, the heaviest midday to early evening. i will show you how that plays out. we wake up under cloudy skies and by about lunchtime notice we will see some rain and even the pink and white, that is snow falling. in some of the higher elevations we could see some snow and then the orange and the yellow, that is the heavier rain. that little pink we could see some snow in the higher elevations. it is a cold and fast-moving system with rainfall announce not super impressive. the grounds are saturated do have to be careful. san francisco possibly over .5 inches. other areas generally less than .5 inches. lows tonight and the upper 30's

for the north bay, then low to mid 40's around the bay area. san francisco 45. oakland 43. and with the cold system moving through, temperatures will be near 50 for almost everybody with some upper 40's through part of the north bay like santa rosa, napa, 47. low 50's san francisco, oakland at 53, and 53 in palo alto and san jose. with this system we will see snow any sierra two to 10 inches. up to 10 inches above 5000 feet. this will make it difficult to travel to and from tahoe. you heard about the atmospheric river a lot, another one heading our way wednesday all the way into thursday. this will generally bring us one to three inches of rain. here is the seven-day forecast. tomorrow is a level one storm. tuesday we get a chance to clean

out the drains, get the sandbags ready because the atmospheric river moves in wednesday and thursday. it will probably not give us as much rain as yesterday but because we are seeing flooding conditions, it will bring us some trouble. then we have wet weather through next weekend. dion: watching it very closely. to some optimism now, this little one waited until six minutes into the new year to come into the world. baby ezekiel was born at 12:06 on the dot today at kaiser permanente, becoming the first baby new year in the bay area for kaiser permanente. and who knows, possibly the entire bay area. he is the first child for his proud parents of pleasant hill. ezekiel weighs seven pounds and nine ounces and we are happy to report, all are doing well. a happy new year and a

dion: happening tomorrow, the 134th rose parade in pasadena. workers are putting the final touches on the floats. the theme of the 2023 rose parade is turning the corner. it represents the world emerging from the covid-19 pandemic, and the sweeping turn the floats will make on the 5.5 mile route. you can watch it right here on abc 7 starting at 8:00 a.m. filed by the rose bowl game on espn. speaking of sports, the 49ers are on a roll and casey pratt joins us with a preview of sports. casey: the niners enter 2023 on an eight game win streak, but

casey: the 49ers raiders rivalry remains alive and well but it is a tale of two different franchisors. the 49ers looking further ninth and a and the raiders just clinging to playoff hopes. the raiders up 10-7 second. he does a little tap dance and stays in, 49ers take the lead. but the raiders answered before the end of the half. adams is simply he is a barria native, so you have to root for him. 17-14 raiders at the break.

christian mccaffrey gets a nice block and takes it the rest of the way, a 14 yard touchdown to get them within 3. jordan mason smashes his way into the end zone for his first career touchdown. 49ers go 34-27. he's going to keep that ball forever. he goes deep to adams again. how in the world did he haul in this ball? it may have hit the ground but there is nine of evidence. raiders tied it a short time later. for the win from 41, and he missed it. unbelievable. raiders get the ball first. it's a wobbler. the defense comes through the biggest moment of the game. he gets a shot at redemption and he nails the game-winner. the 49ers win 37-34, epic game.

>> this is abc 7 news. dion: the bay area, fresh off staggering widespread flooding, now has a new round of storms coming in. after these scenes over the weekend, the attention turns to the be cad. in addition to widespread flooding, parts of san francisco are buried in mud. this covered part of the great highway. the fire department says the hillside is unstable and the rocks continue to slide. the road is closed with no expected reopening date as of now. cornell barnard spoke with business owners in san francisco who say clogged storm drains also created a raging river in the mission. cornell: there is an epic eap happening on 14th street in san francisco's mission neighborhood. this was the eatery before the new year's eve storm. and this was after.

the moment heavy rains brought at least three to four feet of floodwater rushing in. >> we noticed the water started to pool on the street and within 20 minutes, it was coming in the front. cornell: the owner says his staff was preparing bento boxes for new year's went things spiraled into an emergency after floodgates failed. >> half of us were on these tables here, and the rest were inside. at a certain point it was clear there was nothing to do so we decided to evacuate. i had people line up and then jump into water to get to the street. it was pretty crazy. cornell: his restaurant parklet was anchored in the street but as you can see, it is up on the sidewalk after it nearly floated away. >> this is the future. cornell: this person spotted floating down the street. watch as the water busts through the door. his motorcycle storage business

was quickly underwater. >> within 15 minutes the garage door busted, cracked, and water started pouring in. this place was full and half an hour. cornell: a big cleanup now underway. damage estimates are still unknown. rainbow grocery was flooded, a sign on the door telling customers the store was closed. employees dressed in ppe were cleaning up. how would you describe the damage inside? >> i would said this is the worst flood we have seen here, and we have flooded before. >> we are sanitizing and doing a lot of deep cleaning. cornell: many cars were left submerged. some were towed away. she was optimistic about her ford escape. >> the car is totally flooded on the inside. the lights were flashing at things. so i don't know if it is going to be fixable. cornell: many business owners blame storm drains for not working properly after more than five inches of rain fell in the city.

re-college he begins collecting christmas trees to be chipped. they must be placed on the curb and be no taller than six feet. strip the tree of any items like lights and decorations. after january 13 you need to call 311 to organize a pickup. you have to schedule a special collection for -- trees. this is so nice to see. what a way to welcome the new year. skies over san francisco cleared just in time for the fireworks last night. you can see and hear people excited, yelling at the fireworks because they could see them. a certain way for new beginnings. yesterday's storm is delivering a gorgeous start for the new

year for tahoe ski resorts but also delaying business. palisades tahoe in north lake has seen three feet of new snow in the last two days. officials say they expect to be slow to open both. but it's surely a welcome sight first new year's -- for skiers and snowboarders. one last check of the weather. i feel like we should hold onto the umbrellas all week. frances: we had a nice break today and we have another break tuesday. increasing cloud cover. tomorrow we wake up to cloudy skies and temperatures in the upper 30's to low to mid 40's around the bay. then the rain moves in, a storm level 1, generally .25 to .5 inches. could be more in higher elevations, and a few spots where there could be more moderate showers. midday to early evening is atomic. tomorrow will be much cooler. ltle cooler through the north bay.

some upper 40's for areas like napa. this is a cold, fast-moving system, so we could see snow on local areas. there is also a winter weather advisory in effect tomorrow morning through tuesday, anywhere from two to 10 inches expected, especially above 5000 feet. there could be difficult travel conditions. if you are traveling to and from the sierra, tomorrow, we will cal it -- wednesday and thursday is a red light, because that is when an atmospheric river returns to the forecast. tuesday is the day to get ready because this atmospheric river will bring one to three inches of rain to the bay area. wednesday and thursday we have more wet weather friday through sunday. a lot of folks are heading back to work this weekend kids back to school, so we could see bigger messes on the road midweek. we will have a more accurate

casey: after yet another 49ers win, is safe to say brock purdy really is that good. he started 2023 by making 49ers franchise history. he is the first qb to win his first four starts, and the rookie in nfl history. he tossed two more touchdow against the raiders, something he has done in five straight games. >> what he is doing is real. he is a talented guy and very tough. when he does make mistakes he understands why and he tries to learn from them. >> not only was he poised, he took the throne and made a couple calls in the huddle and was very definitive in the way he ran things. >> he is leading to minute drives, signaling out wide, changing play calls. today just really showed us
