monster storm on the move into the west coast. right now in california, this is expected to rise 20 feet in over 24 hours. >> mola lenghi starts us off. good morning, mola. >> reporter: the storm expected to bring fierce winds and mudslides. crews are working around the clock to prevent flooding by shoring up levies. it will take around 4,000 dump truck loads filled with massive boulders to fix that breach ahead of the incoming storm. this morning, millions in northern california bracing for a massive winter storm seen here in this satellite image barreling towards the coast. the expected bomb cyclone coming just days after the area experienced torrential rains, swamping businesses, compromising levees in sacramento county and stranding drivers. meanwhile another storm system tearing across the country leaving tornadoes, snow and torrential rains in its wake. at the minneapolis/st. paul

airport, a plane skidding off the runway after they received two inches of snow an hour. in south dakota, residents struggling to keep up with nearly three feet of snow, and that same system brought 12 reported tornadoes across seven states including this twister outside of little rock, arkansas. surveillance footage shows it crossing this football field hitting a school. rain inundating parts of alabama and south of louisville first responders rescuing a person from a flooded pickup truck. well, it is very much a race against time in sacramento county to plug the levee with these boulders. tens of thousands of people as well as some critical infrastructure are potentially at risk. the national weather service not mincing any words saying this is a brutal storm that needs to be taken seriously. robin? >> it certainly does, mola. thank you. california, to time the storm - out and where it is expected to hit. good morning, ginger. >> reporter: hey, good morning, robin. the timing is now. we are in the first round of rain.

you can see the agitated pacific ocean behind me. that's low tide. this is going to become an irate ocean in the next 12 hours as this thing approaches the coast and you've seen that satellite image, it's a classic comma shape. we are going to see it traverse across the country, but first this morning, there are tornado warnings still in existence from the first tomorrow storm in georgia, alabama, and the florida panhandle. back to this storm, flood warnings all the way from redding to san clemente, california, and the timing goes with the first round. this is the light part. then this afternoon, i'd say between 3:00, to 7:00 p.m. you do not want to be on the roads anywhere in the bay area and coastal. look at los angeles, 3:00 a.m. they get the fire hose of water. so the mudslides, we've got river flooding talking like 20 feet in 24 hours that could go up three to five inches and, robin, 50 to 70-mile-per-hour winds, power outages will happen. >> i know you'll have much more for us throughout the morning. thank you so much, ginger.

to history now with the drama playing out op capitol hill. kevin mccarthy making history in a way he definitely didn't want to do, blocking his bit to become house speaker by a group of hard-right lawmakers. first time in a hundred years the party in control failed to pick a speaker on the first vote. rachel scott is on capitol hill with the latest. good morning, rachel. >> reporter: george, good morning, and we really have not seen anything like this in 100 years. a bitter and historic standoff that has left the house without a speaker, without the ability to consider any legislation or swear in any new members. [ applause ] this morning, chaos and confusion in the house. republicans deadlocked over who will be the next speaker after kevin mccarthy was dealt one defeat after another. >> you failed three times. how do you possibly pull this off? >> you get to 218. >> how do you do it? >> you come back, you continue what you're doing right now, talking and you solve the small problems. >> reporter: for the first time in 100 years, the house failed to elect a speaker on the first vote. >> a speaker has not been elected. >> reporter: mccarthy can only afford to lose four republicans. he lost 19 on the first round and on the second round too. >> i don't want any more empty promises. i don't want any more, oh, trust

us. we'll do it. >> reporter: then support started to chip away even more. mccarthy watching it unravel from the floor. >> twice you voted for mccarthy. the third time you voted against him. >> yeah. >> why the flip? >> he doesn't have the votes. if you've been doing all this work and haven't closed the deal, that should say something. >> reporter: mccarthy's critics insisting he isn't the man for the job. >> maybe the right person for the job of speaker of the house isn't someone who has sold shares of themself for more than a decade to get it. >> reporter: mccarthy has made major concessions, even changing the rules to make it easier to remove a speaker and in a closed door heated meeting he told republicans, quote, i'm not going away. i earned this job. all that didn't go over well. >> so now here we are being sworn at instead of being sworn in. >> reporter: those conservative members standing firm, but mccarthy not backing down. >> any reason for you to back out?

>> no. i'll let you know when that happens, but it's not going to happen. >> reporter: this fight has turned personal. many of those conservatives say they do not trust kevin mccarthy. one member even questioning why he was able to move into the speaker's office, calling him a squatter. one group that was able to remain united was democrats. they rallied behind their leader, congressman hakeem jeffries. as for what comes next, well, the house will reconvene in a few hours at noon then the next round of voting will kick off but with no resolution in sight, george, this could drag on for as long as it takes. george? >> boy, rachel, it sure will. let's bring in jon karl for more. kevin mccarthy says it's not going to happen. he's not going to drop out. it's also very hard to see how he becomes speaker. >> reporter: look, george, this is a colossal embarrassment for republicans. they won control of the house and they can't even get their members sworn in. that means none of their talk of

investigating joe biden, none of that can get started. how does that end? unclear how kevin mccarthy gets the votes. it's equally unclear how anyone opposed to mccarthy gets the vot votes. >> do we have any sense about how this might end? >> reporter: i see one of two possible scenarios. one, that somehow mccarthy who has already given so much can convince a critical mass of those against him to simply vote present instead of voting for somebody else. that would bring down the threshold he would need to win. there are no signs that people opposed to him are backing down. the other scenario is that kevin mccarthy is convinced to drop out of the race. no indication that's being considered by him. if he were to drop out, the only way another candidate would get the 218 votes is if mccarthy fully endorsed that candidate. kevin mccarthy may not have the

218 votes he needs, but has the votes to block anybody else. >> it's a crazy situation. jon karl, i know you'll be back with the story on george santos. linsey? now to the latest on nfl player damar hamlin. the entire league rallying around the bills safety and fans in buffalo holding a vigil overnight after he collapsed on the field from cardiac arrest during monday night football. alex perez is in cincinnati with the very latest. good morning, alex. >> reporter: hey, good morning, linsey. hamlin's family immediately making the drive from pittsburgh here to cincinnati to be at the hospital by his side. the next few days will be crucial. doctors will be watching him around the clock. this morning, new details on buffalo bills safety damar hamlin in the icu, sedated and fighting for his life after that frightening moment during monday night football. >> to midfield and lowers the shoulder. >> reporter: overnight hamlin's uncle saying it was at the hospital where his nephew had to be revived a second time. >> his heart had went out so they had to resuscitate him twice.

they resuscitated him on the field before they brought him in the hospital. >> reporter: hamlin, officials say, suffering cardiac arrest after that tackle against a cincinnati bengal that ended with a blow to his chest. >> that trauma at that exact moment of the cardiac cycle could precipitate a very fatal arrhythmia, literally by like almost shocking the heart. >> reporter: what triggered the cardiac arrest remains unclear. the terrifying ordeal unfolding just nine minutes into the game. medics and trainers within seconds rushing to check on hamlin. >> well, this is the last thing you want to see. >> reporter: the nfl says on average there are 30 medical professionals at every game. having that immediate care, experts say, was crucial. after ten minutes of cpr, medics restoring his heartbeat on the field. >> they are intensely working on damar hamlin. >> reporter: stunned fans watching, emotional players and coaches forming a privacy barrier around hamlin before an ambulance rushed him to the

the war in ukraine including the fallout from the ukrainian rocket attack and the intense drone battle that is shaping up between ukraine and russia. britt clennett is on the scene in ukraine for us. good morning, britt. >> reporter: good morning, robin. fears here that russia could ramp up attacks even further in the coming days after one of the deadliest strikes on putin's troops since the war began. moscow now revising the death toll upward. this morning, russia raising the number of soldiers killed in a new year's day strike to 89. dozens higher than its initial death toll but still far lower than the hundreds of deaths claimed by the ukrainians. russian officials said mass use of cell phones made it easier for the ukrainian military to locate their barracks. saying troops disobeyed orders to turn their phones off. also in eastern ukraine a dramatic moment captured on camera. watch what's believed to be a russian missile exploding behind a french reporter on air. the journalist and his colleagues managing to find safety. and as russia intensified the attacks using iranian-made

drones, ukraine claims iran may be sending another drones to russia in the near future. well, ukraine's spy chief told abc news that russia is resorting to using these drones because it's running out of missiles and that the drones are a cheaper option. there's plenty of them and that tehran is one of the only governments willing to do business with moscow. george? >> britt, thanks very much. now to congressman george santos. his rough first day on the job as he faces increasing scrutiny over the falsehoods he told about his life story. facing legal pressure as well. jon karl back with the story. good morning, jon. >> reporter: good morning, george. embattled congressman-elect george santos spent most of his first day in congress dodging questions about the many lies he has told about his own life story. george santos spent a good part of his first day on capitol hill avoiding reporters. >> mr. santos, do you have a message for your constituents? do you feel like you're qualified to serve in this congress right now? how do you hope your

constituents can trust you even though you've misrepresented your biography to them? >> reporter: ignoring questions about the glaring inconsistencies about his work, education, and family history. >> why are you turning away? >> reporter: the new york republican seemed a bit disoriented, at one point, asking where the elevators were. >> the elevators are back there. >> reporter: inside the house chamber, santos spent much of the day sitting by himself staring at his phone. on his way to congress he told many untruths about his life story, now refusing to answer even the most basic questions about his past. >> when is the last time you spoke with gop leadership? >> what is your legal name? >> reporter: much of his biography has been invented, lying about having a college degree and about owning property. he claimed to have jewish roots, but now he says he's catholic. >> i've always joked with friends in circles and even during the campaign, i would say guys, i'm jew-ish. remember, i was raised catholic.

i understand everybody wants to kn nitpick at me. >> reporter: he is now the subject of multiple investigations in new york and also in brazil where he stands accused of stealing a checkbook when he was just 19. santos has denied any legal wrongdoing telling "the new york post" last week, i am not a criminal here, not here or in brazil or any jurisdiction in the world. santos would also be a prime candidate for an investigation by the house ethics committee once the new congress is finally sworn in. one person though who has said nothing about this controversy is republican leader kevin mccarthy, perhaps aware that he needs every vote he can get in his race to be speaker and santos voted for him all three times yesterday. george? >> perhaps. jon karl, thanks very much. linsey? now who wants to be a billionaire? we turn now to the megamillions jackpot. still no winner yet and now closing in on a billion dollars. andrew dymburt is here to break it all down for us. good morning, andrew.

the suspect in the murder of the four idaho students appearing in court for the first time as we learn new details about his arrest. dan abrams is standing by with that. first back to ginger in california. ginger? >> reporter: robin, it is incredible how far north of the tornado reports made it into illinois. near decatur where that funnel is crossing across the landscape there but this morning there are watches up. atlanta just got blasted. the tornado watch extends to port st. joe down in the pan handle of florida, so apalachicola, you're in it too. and this line will keep being ugly through the rest of the afternoon. the timing there, even gets to but, again, this is the area you have to watch for the tornado threat and also remember this line has had incredible flash flooding with it so keep an eye on that. if you see a flash flood warning, do not drive. that's the big picture. your local weather in 30 seconds.

for us. good morning, kayna. >> reporter: robin, good morning. i was in that courtroom and the second he walked in he was looking for his family. he kept turning around offering them reassuring nods throughout the entire proceeding. he also stood and answered the judge's questions and said he has no mental health diagnosis that would impede his ability to waive extradition. this morning, bryan kohberger, the suspect wanted for the quadruple murders of four idaho college students has been processed out in pennsylvania and is preparing to be sent to idaho after waiving his extradition rights. >> arrangements are being made to deliver kohberger back to idaho where he can have continued due process and face these charges. >> reporter: the 28-year-old criminology ph.d. student maintains his innocence as he prepares to face a judge in moscow after appearing shackled and silent in a pennsylvania courtroom tuesday. >> why did you do it? >> reporter: led in by armed guards, his mother, father and two sisters there, kohberger appearing calmceed

as he left the courtroom he mouthed "i love you" to his family. his mother and sister sobbing. kohberger and his father recently making a 2,500-mile cross-country road trip from his home in pullman to pennsylvania just weeks ago. on the way they were stopped twice by indiana police. new body cam footage from the first december 15th incident released showing kohberger being pulled over for following too closely. >> it's a long haul. you guys scared of airplanes? >> reporter: he was released with a verbal warning while driving that white hyundai elantra. indiana state police saying at the time of the stop, there was no information available on a suspect for the crime in idaho, or any specific information related to the license plate, state or number of the white hyundai elantra. this, as new details emerge about that early morning raid on

kohberger's family home on december 30th. >> force was used. the warrants were issued for evening search warrants but obviously surveillance was conducted and we wanted to go in at a time when we thought it would be the safest for everybody, safest for anybody else in the house, safest for mr. kohberger and safest for our people. >> reporter: and also this morning, the district attorney there in pennsylvania saying part of the reason he thinks kohberger is in a hurry to get back to idaho is so he can read that probable cause affidavit. now, that is still expected to be made public after his first court appearance there in idaho. but noting this morning that last night the judge issued a gag order. so right now law enforcement and attorneys involved in this case cannot comment until there's a verdict. guys? >> no one is talking there. kayna, thank you. let's bring in chief legal analyst dan abrams. so, dan, obviously kohberger, he did not fight extradition back to idaho. you say that's not unusual. tell us why not and what happens once he arrives in idaho. >> it's basically a formality when you are talking about state-to-state extradition, particularly for something like murder.

to fight extradition you basically have to be saying they have the wrong guy, it isn't me. there's no other real argument to make about extradition, so it would have happened. the question is when. when he arrives in idaho, he'll have an initial appearance in court and appear in front of a magistrate judge who makes sure he understands the charges against him and makes sure he has a lawyer and set up another date for another hearing. >> what's the reason for the gag order? >> the judge believes that he wants to ensure that the system is protected, that the integrity of the process is protected by ensuring that people don't speak out. but i'll tell you something interesting, is up to this point the idaho authorities have said, we're not allowed to speak under idaho law. that's actually not really true. the police could have been speaking publicly, but they've chosen not to. i think the reason in part for the gag order is because there have been so many leaks. so you have the authorities publicly saying we can't talk. we can't say anything. we can't answer questions and

then all the information is coming out via leaks. i think that is part of probably why the judge imposed this gag order. >> we heard kayna mention the probable cause affidavit that will be released when he is in idaho. what do you expect to see and do they have to reveal like anything about a possible motive? >> no, there doesn't have to be motive at all in the case. i think what you'll see is them explaining what led them to arrest him, how they ended up concluding that they had the right guy. i think you'll see a combination of the car, the dna evidence, how they linked it back to him and what led to that arrest. so we'll see. there could be, though, by the way, information about a possible motive and, of course, the question that so many people want to know is did he have any connection with the victims beforehand? another thing we'll be looking to see in that affidavit. >> the dna is likely going to be a big part of the investigation, the case against him. anything else that you're curious as far as that aspect of the investigation? >> did they actually make a

your phone, you call 911, put it on speakerphone while you start cpr. if there's an aed around, you should get it and put it on. but in terms of cpr, robin, i want you to notice how his arms are straight and his hands do not lose contact with the sternum of the person where you're doing chestcompressions. you want to do it hard and fast roughly 100 to 120 beats a minute or to the tune of "staying alive." you do not stop until help arrives. >> all right, so that's an adult. thank you, mike, for that. that's an adult. what about a child? >> a child, we're talking larger than 1 year old. one hand, the same rate, the same depth of pressure. the only difference with children the most likely or common cause of a cardiac arrest arrest. they may have choked on something. you want to take a look in their mouth just before you get started and see if you can see anything in there. again, hands only, no mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. >> you can see how he's being gentler.

>> i want to say something about the gentleness. when you do cpr on an adult correctly, you'll very often hear and feel ribs break. keep going. you are not going to make that person worse. that's the fear that often holds people back. they don't want to hurt the person. the person's already dead. all you can do is help. >> this is some great information here. aed machines. >> they're everywhere. >> we see them but we don't know when we should use them. >> everywhere. they're in malls, airports, restaurants. we have them in the studio. they can be lifesaving. they talk you through it. you can see here we have applied the pads on the person and i want to just let you hear literally what it says to you. >> analyzing heart rhythm. >> okay. so this -- >> do not touch the patient. >> it will only deliver a shock if the patient is in what we call a shockable rhythm so that's ventricular tachycardia, ventricular fibrillation.

sacrificed for that purchase and make sure it's something you truly value, you truly want before you spend that money on it. >> all right. we have viewer questions. we'll go to clarissa in miami with a question. like many people, it's about buying a home. >> hi, professor copeland. i am 25 and i'm having doubts if i'll ever get to own a home in today's market because of housing affordability. what can i do to reach my goal on becoming a homeowner? >> great question. great question. i think that, you know, right now especially in this home market, there's a lot of things that have been thrown into question, right? a lot of people who grew up dreaming of buying their own home have to look at their own budgets and balance sheets and think twice about it. >> especially with the interest rates. >> interest rates and again just home prices, the way they've skyrocketed over the past few years. so the first thing, one, get creative in your financing. you have to not only aggressively save your money and

save up for a down payment but you have to look at fha loans and grants and other community efforts that might be able to help subsidize some of the closing costs you have for a home and then, again, also, there's a lot of people considering multigenerational financing. so, you know, it takes a village. you know and not everyone will be able to afford the home of their dreams, unfortunately, at this point in time. however, i am a big believer in you got to find a way and so got to get creative. >> sometimes you got to get a starter home first. >> exactly. >> now we have a question from vaughn from clifton, virginia, asking about investing. >> hi, professor copeland. what is the best way to start investing? >> oh, so for me when i always tell my students, i need you to start learning the language of investing. so i tell people, not to shout out any of these apps, but download the bloombergs, "wall street journal"s, cnbc and turn

on notifications to see what language and what things are actually moving the markets, what things are making money, losing money, et cetera. after that, then i tell people to go to a trading platform of their choice, set up a paper trading account, a virtual trading account. you want to start trading with that and start to buy stocks, sell stocks, et cetera, and get to know that platform before you put your real money in. and at some point in time you have to put your real money in, whether that be 100 bucks, a thousand bucks, 10,000 bucks, whatever it is, you got to get started, get skin in the game so you can actually really pay attention because, again, as much as you pay attention when it's paper money, when it's your real money you're really following it like a hawk. >> professor copeland, always dropping the knowledge, appreciate it so much. >> appreciate you. let's go back to ginger in california. >> reporter: our focus has been so much about the coastal part of the storm, the huge waves

so good to have you here. we were just saying we wanted to see the coat up close. >> aww, wanted to slim myself, you know, for this segment. >> we love the wardrobe change. what has been the fans' reaction to this one compared to the first wakanda film in 2018? >> the first one caught everyone off guard. you know, the first one, no one knew what to expect and there was just this huge new moment. it was this watershed moment that everyone just kind of had an opportunity to see themselves in certain ways for the first time and that was really great and really novel. and then it's really hard to make a sequel that can follow that, but, you know, reality really primed us. we lost chadwick and this movie really offered this macro opportunity for people to say good-bye. >> he must have been present on the set every day in spirit.

>> you would feel him. you know, you would feel him. before we shot the movie, we all gathered and, as a company, we flew to his gravesite and said good-bye. and that was a really great way process. the film and start the- we also brought the new cast, you know, with us, so all the people from under the sea came with us and they got to say good-bye as well because they knew him as this figure on the screen and it offered an opportunity to really bond. and then as we played the movie all across the world, you really saw people get to say good-bye. in lagos, people were crying in the movie theater. this one gave permission to grieve and gave permission to have some closure and gave permission to understand that there's no right way to go through that grieving process. >> you talk about giving permission. do you feel there's a license to

improv? robin was saying when she watched the movie she thought that was not in the script. at one point you call one of the characters a bald-headed demon. >> yeah. i was having a tough day with her that day and i just wanted her to know how i felt. no, it's a really fun set, "black panther," always. it's a very safe set. so ryan coogler, you know, one of his superpowers is that he creates this space where everyone can feel free and just experiment and play and we really feel like family. so a lot of improvisation happens. it's a strong script, but a lot of cool stuff comes out of improvisation and danai was in the corner like -- do that. [ laughter ] so we really support each other in that way so it's a really good space. >> such a great cast. i want to make sure i get this

[ laughter ] what was it like, angela bassett, letitia, danai, lupita, wat was it like for you to work with these powerful and talented women? >> my whole life has been defined by strong women. like i came to this country because my sister wanted to be a doctor. so it was really about my family pursuing her dream and i learned how to have a dream because i watched her pursue hers. and then, like, lupita was the first person in my, like, personal circle that made it big and made it seem like this could happen for everyone. and then on set, you have moments where that scene where angela bassett is like, have i not given everything? everyone stopped on set. >> now is our time. >> and gave her a round of applause.

she had a standing ovation on set after the scene. you know, it got a little old after three -- [ laughter ] >> enough already. didn't you have a connection with lupita in college? >> yes. >> and danai. >> yeah. so we all -- it's all crazy how full circle it's become. lupita showed me around campus as her work study. angela bassett is one of the reasons we all went to yale school of drama because we're like, maybe she sat here and, you know -- u know, what's love got to do with it? and then danai is also a really prolific playwright. and while we were at school one of her plays played at the theater and lupita actually understudied one of the roles and we all went to see that. so it's just like very full circle and -- >> could you have imagined then what it would all come to? >> you know, i've always been incredible. [ laughter ]

and, um, i've always known that i was going to be really something special. [ laughter ] so i could, i could imagine being here with you. but, no, there was a moment in life where, you know, lupita and i went to see the first "avengers" together and we were both obsessed with the hulk. we were like, aww, man, i'll do anything. i'll hold the lights if they need something and to be able to just work with each other and work with your personal heroes is just -- there's nothing like it. >> what's your hope for the third "black panther"? what is your character going to do? >> i hope i get paid really well. year "better than ever," dry january. giving up alcohol for 31 days can be a bit of a challenge but dr. jennifer ashton is back to help. i'm now four days sober. >> yes. >> and it is something that i try from time to time over the years. i think i feel a little more energetic. >> i do too. >> it's something i do just to make sure i can do it. you have this big medical bag here with some tips to help us make it through the 31 day. >> this is slightly smaller than my real handbag. but, you know, we like to kind of fill the boat in medicine and behavioral medicine is no different. so there are some things in here i think people who are experimenting with a dry month should kind of dig into for a little bit of assistance. one of them, linsey, weights. i know you're a big runner. i've gotten back into running but i'm more a big weight lifter. it's super important particularly for women and while you're doing a month where you're cutting something out, it's nice to add something and exercise is a great thing to add.

weights, there's no barrier for entry. people who are seated or unable to stand can do it. people who want to be a little more aggressive can do it. i cannot say enough about the weight lifting. >> what else do you have here in the bag for us? >> next we have journaling and whether you do it with something nice and glitzy -- >> very fancy. >> -- or something electronic, there's a lot of data that shows that you can make some really significant and positive and impactful changes in your physical and mental well-being if you just chronicle it. so you want to keep track of how you're feeling day-to-day. it doesn't have to be a big long essay but just a couple of lines, some kind of subjective and objective scale of how it's all going for you. >> do you often do it with a partner? >> well, we're going to get to that. i think that definitely is easier, right? misery loves company, no, just kidding. the other thing is apps. one in particular that's free,
