we have areas of light rain and scattered showers. nothing significant at the moment compared to what we have had yesterday and early today. many locations received two inches or more of rain from the most recent storm. you know about the winds. we give you a look at some of the peak wind gusts. 101 mile per hour winds at public point. 89 mile per hour gusts. 77 at los gatos. loma prieta, 78 mile per hour gusts. we still have a flood warning in effect until 6:45 this evening. contra costa and alameda counties. we have a flood watch in effect through tomorrow morning for solano county. there is a high surf effect until 3:00 a.m. tomorrow. we have seen wave heights with this event over 25 feet.

taking the brunt of the damage. mary has owned two uni building for 10 years and says she has ever seen conditions this bed. >> we had the first big wave coming to our garage and ring debris under the cars dum about six inches of sand in the driveway. >> the capitola city manager says the worst began with high tide at 8:30 thursday morning. >> what we saw was water coming out of the banks of socal creek and inundating people's homes. >> the village streets filled with debris and sand. the crews have been working tirelessly to clean. the wharf closed to the public who came down in droves to see the damages to capitola was not the only area devastated. a majority of the peer that once led up disintegrated. highways and damage shut down parts of the santa cruz work. mark had been staying at a hotel

in san francisco where you can see the waves rolling in and over. flooding what is usually a parking lot. and check out the high waves at alameda's crown beach. east bay regional parks has officially closed the beach because of the potentially dangerous conditions caused by the stormy weather. >> i the north bay waves are coming up past the beaches. check this this video was shot in bolinas by the west marin feed. you can see the water rushing in over the pavement. in the north bay all eyes are in creeks, streams and the rising russian river which could for each -- which could reach flood stage this weekend. a terrible tragedy. cornell barnard has that story. >> the storm tragically claiming the life of two-year-old eon.

firefighter say the todd there was killed wednesday night when a redwood tree crashed into the family's home in occidental in western sonoma county. >> when i first arrived on scene a frantic father came out of the household with a child. he said my child is not breathing. >> the family sharing these pictures with us. they say he had a kind loving spirit. highway 116, the road to greenville was wet, windy and treacherous. wednesday storm knocked out power to most of the town but that is not the biggest worry. i hope i will all barber and beauty owner was grabbing as many sandbags as he could to protect his business from the rising russian river. >> the water comes from behind. it does not come from the river forward. leavg son with extensive>> insi.

aftermath. in the peninsula over 26,000 pg&e customers were left without power. >> all i could hear was the wind and it was strong. it was a lot. i have not heard anything like that in a long time. >> matthews neighborhood in daly city lost power around 4:00 p.m. wednesday. he is one of thousands scrambling today. >> a to use my car because i need to use my phone. >> local cars and coffee shops turned into offices. finding an open power outlet was a hot commodity. >> i'm going to be here working all day. we had a meeting today. i could not make it because i don't have that are -- i don't have battery. >> pg&e crews were out assessing some of the worst damages. >> in some areas wins topped 100 miles per hour. the damage we rca is very significant. our crews are out in full force. >> at st. francis square shopping center in daly city

isolated. they all have ways out. once we have made direct contact with and assured us they can either relocate or they're willing to ride it out. >> residents say they hope it will not have to evacuate but they are keeping a close eye on the hillside in case they do. >> i have never seen that he'll do this type of damage. in years past with the rain it would stay stationary to the top. >> now is be prepared as best as possible in case they need to evacuate. in terms of this particular hill in dublin officials placed a tarp on the hill throughout the week to limit the mud from getting close to homes. that seems to have worked but as we are expecting more rain through the days to come we are going to have to wait to see if that tarp will hold and these residents are on high alert. >> that tarp will trip the hill from being more statue rated we hope to -- more saturated.

>> in san francisco there was minor flooding in the marino district had villainy woodrow has the story. >> traffic in the murder that was fairly light. those who did venture outside were prepared. >> the waves are crashing and you can see some water pooling on the ground as well as yellow caution tape preventing people from crossing into the area. you can see some on the others. it has not stopped everyone. you can see the minutes of what had likely been some flooding. sticks and debris and rocks in this area. probably why the caution tape had been put up. you can see the waves crashing. water spelling over the edge of the shore. the ground is pretty much saturated. a sign on this garbage can say carry out what you carry in but you the sense of what you put 10 to discard here or throw into the water based on what has been carried out by the flooding.

>> two teenagers are charged with killing a security guard at the japan town center in san francisco last night. obtained surveillance photos of the guard escorting one of the teenagers outside the mall moments before he was shot. as nizar owners in the mall put flowers in the area this morning to remember him. police say the teenagers are 14 and 15 years old. reverend amos brown o says community involvement is needed.

off live doppler 7 this week. right now we are getting a break between storms but it has been lit up all sorts of colors as rain sweeps through the bay area. >> i san francisco crews are working around the clock. >> the work is really just beginning. >> the sound of cleanup in the wake of wednesday's storm. san francisco public works teams out in full force. >> i've been on some of the bad ones but this one was pretty ferocious. i would say probably one of the worst ones i have dealt with. >> high winds down a hundreds of trees throughout the city including this one trapping a family in their car. trees toppling power lines and more. >> a cypress tree over here fell over across both the tracks. it compromised the large eucalyptus tree >> now this tree along with others must come down. >> we have other smaller acacia

officials claims to the national weather service and they responded by sharing they communicated the darkness of the situation as you mentioned 10 days before it happened. they told the public a significant rain event would bring high impact conditions was coming. the emailed local officials daily briefings and presented at the new year's eve planning meeting. that was three days before it came. the intel was there is what they showed us. >> joining us now is phil matier. the mayor seems a little defensive about the information the city got from the national weather service. is that fair? >> it is not necessarily fair. on both sides. the national weather service said there was a storm coming. they predicted two to three inches of rain. we got five-and-a-half. the information was out there. not necessarily enough for it to have made the prediction because people did not know. we are dealing with a situation

city officials constantly say climate change has maybe storms more dramatic, more destructive and we need to be prepared by the city was not. what we saw was the mayor saying wolfs which is not an easy thing for the mayor to say. since then she has been in contact with the head of the national weather service. they ironed this thing out saying we give you this information. she said i did not mean it to sound like i was criticizing you. it was taken out of context. that is a double hoops. this is a situation where people were caught flat-footed. it could repeat itself because san francisco has fundamental problems with its infrastructure that are not going away this week. >> let's talk about that because we do have to be prepared. san francisco sort of has an interesting sewer system should >> that is the word for it. we use that a lot around here.

san francisco has a habit of being interesting. unlike most coastal cities that use pumps a lot and we have pumps but we depend on gravitation because we are a hilly city. years ago they came up with a system that has pipes moving sewer water and drainage water. the result is it can get swamped and backup. the city has embarked on a 630 $5 million project to repair those and change those but it is going to take time. at a set -- in typical san francisco fashion it is going to take years. >> what else is being done to deal with the infrastructure issues? >> that is a key one. another is outer structure. we saw the report on trees that is one of the biggest fears facing the city now. if they come down, they headlines, they had cars, they can be a huge problem. they are out there trying to deal with that. other things we are doing is we

are trying to get as many sandbags as possible. at one point they are running out and sent a caravan of trucks to fremont to the factory that makes them. when the trucks got there they found they wrote the end of a long line of other cities. they wound up having to go to tracy. they are the bags in. the bags will be out there. it was going to be a continuous thing. they are out there with their pumps now. they have these vacuums to clean out the system. i have a feeling there will be doing their best. >> the last couple of storms highlights the work that needs to be done. >> it is interesting because we have the storms. we have had them in the past. call me the next 10. >> take a look at this from hillsboro showing downed trees on oakdale road. when tree went through a fence leaving it in pieces. there were no known injuries. in san jose a fallen tree

injured a highway patrol dealing with that incident on the side of highway 17. dustin dorsey has the details and a warning for others. >> a california highway patrol officer should consider himself lucky he is relatively ok. a routine response to a traffic collision took a dangerous turn as a massive tree toppled over onto highway 17 in san jose and the chp officer responding. >> he did suffer some pain as a result of this. nothing that is potentially life-threatening. >> just after 10:00 a.m. two cars involved and a noninjury accident called for chp response south of highway 280 and highway 17 interchange. the officers arrived on the scene and gusty winds blew through the corridor. these 40 to 60 foot trees along highway 17 have been getting soaked due to the rain we have been having. with powerful winds today the tree was able to fall on the officer responding to the crash.

crews arrived on scene and began to clear the large tree off the roadway. traffic was slowed for at least an hour. chp officer russell lee says highway patrol has received around 150 weather reports since the storm began but he has never received a call like this. >> we understand we are stepping into a potentially dangerous situation. our officers are highly trained. take the most precautions. occasionally there are incidents that put our officers into a situation where we see something like today. everyone is ok and this highlights the importance of good driving during stormy weather. >> we urge people to continue to remember this safety messages to drive safe, make responsible choices. >> coming up companies are laying people off.
